From Surat the 15th of April Anno 1758: no more than ƒ295010:11:— for reasons as in the text disadvantageous showing having been fetched, the according to which paper the profits after deduction of the losses in the year 1756/7 only amounted to ƒ295010:11:— or 105¾ per cent, which poor showing originates solely from the fact that in the year 1755/6, according to the old method, as soon as the sale of any wares was concluded, the brokers were debited for the total amount, and merchandise that was fetched months later, and sometimes even a year and a day afterward, and remained lying there in the meantime for the account and risk of the Company, was credited. Whereby the warehouses were stuffed with merchandise without any remainders in the books, but on the other hand one had the pleasure of immediately shining with the profits of goods that were only delivered so much later, and with which one did not know how matters might still turn out at times, although a time was always stipulated when the collection and payment were to take effect, which then, upon the remonstrations of the brokers, was repeatedly extended, whereas since the 26th of February 1756, seeing that all simple stipulations of time for the weighing out were nonetheless fruitless, and moreover experiencing that the brokers themselves, being ashamed and embarrassed about this due to the decline of trade, the causes of which were cited in that resolution, by continuously breaking their word in such a manner, were not inclined to bind themselves any longer to collect what was purchased within a fixed time, no goods were sold except to be fetched and paid for as soon as practicable; since which time, notwithstanding which, merchandise was credited and the brokers debited only on the day of collection or delivery, whereby it is now always purely evident what truly remains as a balance, but also at the same time the inconvenience of such an unusually disadvantageous showing arose, there having been fetched in the year 1756/7, besides the goods known in the Rendement, from the previously sold merchandise, such parcels as can be seen in the following— Note continuation 77. From Souratta, the 15th of April, Anno 1758. Concerning the dyed and printed linens, they request that consideration be shown, or that a 5 percent increase be granted to them. However, the former being too questionable, they were rather granted a 3 percent increase. Taking as a pretext a very deficient fulfillment, one was indeed obliged to resolve to contract for the white and colored cloths, which were also procured in the past year, at the prices of the previous year, with the exception of the Baftas Brootchia with Gold heads, which the Company's broker residing there had offered to deliver for 5 1/2 percent less than they had been negotiated here in Anno 1755/6, and which one consequently caused to be procured at that office at 5 1/2 percent less, with instructions to the factors to take care that the reduction in price is not found in the quality instead. However, regarding the dyed and printed linens, they continued strongly to insist that one should promise to show consideration to them in case the oil and other dyeing ingredients should become as expensive again as they had been in Anno 1752, or else that one should straightaway grant them a 5 percent increase, in which case they would themselves bear the risk of the dyeing materials becoming dearer. For this reason, one found oneself compelled to choose one of these options, or to see no progress made in the contracting of those cloths. And since the condition of showing consideration seemed too broad and indefinite, and there was reason to think that, if the supposed case occurred, they would be able and willing to extend that consideration very far, it was judged that one would fare better and more advantageously by making a clear agreement with them from the outset, since disputes could easily arise afterward from such an unlimited promise to the detriment of the collection, unless one were willing to grant their claim to be formed then, however unreasonable and troublesome it might be. Thus, we judged it to be the lesser of two evils to offer them an increase of three percent on the aforesaid linens, only excepting the two home-country assortments, namely Chitsen Sourats of 12 @ and Chitsen Chiaboutrias, which they finally accepted after long resistance. Furthermore, on the aforesaid day, it was also found good and resolved to have the Naginapats of No. 15 made, half according to the new and half according to the old sample, just as in the past year, for the reasons cited then. To contract for the Dongrijs or Poutkaas, which had not been negotiated in this Directorate since Anno 1747, for f 450 the pack of 20 corgies, being the lowest price that could be stipulated, and yet a good 6 5/8 percent less than was paid for them the last time. To contract for the half of the Bherms broad Sourats, last negotiated in the year 1748, according to the new sample for f 607:10:- per 1 pack of 100 pieces, or with an increase of 8 percent, and for the other half at Brootchia according to the former sample, provided the difference in price is up to 6 1/8 percent, as the same were accepted there at f 571:11:8 the pack. To have made at this main office the Niquaniassen long Sourats of 10 wiza or 20 @, which had not been negotiated since 1749, and for which f 513:15:- per pack of one hundred pieces was paid at that time, according to the sample received, but only half of the required quantity on account of the high price, as the Gentlemen Masters desire them thus and not otherwise, and the price here could not be stipulated for less than f 532:10:-, or 3 1/8 percent dearer than formerly, whereas at Brootchia the pack of the old assortment did not cost more than f 430:6:- in Anno 1756, or 23 1/2 percent less than the new sort which is presently required. To have procured here according to the new sample the Niquaniassen fine of 14 C@s, which had never yet been negotiated at this main office, at f 397:10:- the pack. To likewise contract here for the Tappij Chindijs demanded for Timor, and also never negotiated at this main office, on account of the troubles at Amed-abaad, at Rup:s 15 the corgie, or 20 pieces, according to the Amed-abaad sample; as also the Karrikams, item the flag-cloth, for the same reason, and at the prices recently paid for them. Of the 7th, 11th, and 15th of October, and 10th of December of the past year, as also the 8th of March of this year, of which it would be too tedious to enumerate all the particulars herein; therefore, with regard to the excuses brought forward by the servants on account of the badness of the returns in general, and conforming to the serious reprimands given to you regarding it, we shall content ourselves with saying that, both in the said session and on the 5th of November, we resolved, among other things: From the 500 long Niquanias found passable, from a quantity of 12 bales or 1200 pieces received from there on the orders from the mother country for the years 1756 and 1757, to select piece by piece 300 pieces of the best and those that matched closest with the sample, in the presence of the Broach second headman, who was here to have his children baptized, and to have them repacked to serve in fulfillment of what was still lacking on the first-mentioned requisition; To have the remaining 200 merchantable ones, being stamped in the usual manner, packed for Batavia; To deliver the rejected 700 pieces to the correspondent of the Broach brokers, according to his request, to act therewith at his discretion, provided he delivers other good quality linens for the value of those; and To write to the factors not to procure a single piece of that sort of cloths, since the Gentlemen Masters in the demand for 1757 order them to be sent better than in earlier years, or not at all; To discount eight percent from: 25 bales of Baftas, black broad whole, for Batavia, 20 bales of the same for Cabo de Goede Hoop; Seven percent from: 6 bales of Baftas, black broad whole, for Banjarmassin, 7 bales of the same, half, for Padang; Six percent from: 16 bales of Baftas, black broad half, for Cabo de Goede Hoop; Five percent from: 4 bales of Niquanias, coarse, for Cabo de Goede Hoop, 3 bales of Bherms, broad, for the mother country, and to have the same stamped and sent to Batavia, 5 bales of Baftas, black broad whole, for Ternate, 25 bales of the same for Padang, 10 bales of the same for Malacca, 4 bales of the same for Amboina, 5 bales of the same for Poulo Chinco, 5 bales of Baftas, black broad half, for Poulo Chinco, 2 bales of Broach white Baftas with gold headers, for Batavia, 1 bale of Broach white Baftas with gold headers, for Padang, 39 bales of Broach white broad whole finished Baftas, for Batavia, 400 pieces of coarse Lalia Carroots, in 5 bales, for the mother country; Three percent from: 4 bales of Niquanias, coarse, for the Cape, 400 pieces of coarse Tjarolia Carroots and 400 pieces of coarse Tjokria Carroots in the said 5 bales; On the proposal made by the factors in their letter of the 10th of December to stop the collection of the checked or keesdaars cloths, it being according to their conception an expedient to compel the suppliers to deliver better goods, to write back in reply that such came very inopportunely at a time when, according to their own letters, there were many buyers for them, with orders to continue the collection and in reinforcement of the so often repeated recommendation to refrain at last from accepting a single piece of linen that, whether regarding fineness, density, or color, differs in the least for the worse from the sample, since it was maintained that the intended objective could be achieved much better thereby, etc.; To send the servants other samples of the new coarse Cangams, the fine and coarse striped Niquanias, the coarse Tjarolia Carroots, and the cotton gierens, since upon comparison of all the Broach samples, which we had expressly ordered to be brought hither for that purpose, against those that were kept here, it was found that theirs, as far as those goods are concerned, were really more or less inferior to ours, as well as to add thereto two sample books of finished broad and narrow black Baftas, in order to serve as information for them regarding the color and finishing. From Surat, the 15 April 1758. The custom of accepting anything on the old demand after the new contracting has taken place. The Director at first did not dare to change this, but finally, for the reasons stated alongside. A practice having crept in here some years ago of still accepting what was lacking on the old demands for several months after the contracting of the new demands, in which the first undersigned, although not unaware of Your High Noble's useful orders on that subject sent to the linen-producing offices of 4 July, 9 August, and 14 September 1741, had during the first period of his administration hesitated to make changes, since from this, especially in the case of an early contracting of the new demands, it necessarily had to follow that the previous year's demands were very defectively fulfilled, which could not fail to cause great displeasure at first glance, and thus matters dragged on in the old way until 27 December of the past year, when the Director, having great hope that cotton this year would not rise high in price, and that consequently some reduction in the prices of the linens might be bargained for, in which case the interest of the Company would especially require ceasing as soon as possible the acceptance of goods at the more expensive prices of the previous contracting, proposed to overcome that inconvenience, and rather to serve the Company well than to seem to do so; and it was therefore, after mature consideration, thought fit always to hold the new contracting of returns on the last of February, and then to consider the delivery on the old demands as ended, since it seldom happens that the new demands, both for Europe and the respective Indian regions, are not yet at hand by then, except only the printed linens, which can best be washed and bleached in the months of March and April, and it was therefore deemed permissible to continue accepting them until the end of that month, the more so because these are mostly demanded for India and the last ship commonly does not depart until that time; as well as respectfully to show to the Gentlemen Directors in the reply to the demand, as well as to Your High Nobles herewith, that there is reason to hope that, if this procedure is strictly maintained, it will indeed seem with respect to the demands for the year 1757 as if 97 From Surat, the 15 April 1758. Notice of the aforesaid resolution having been given to the Broach factors, together with an extract from the Homeland demand, with orders to take the prices of the broker; and sent to them at their request a sample of English niquanias and of the bherms according to the new sample. as if the same were fulfilled extremely defectively, but that upon the final balance of the account it will nevertheless be found that effectively no fewer returns were procured in a full year than before, over and above the fact that this arrangement, resting upon the express orders of Your High Nobles which through a mistaken timidity had remained unexecuted for so long, will greatly facilitate a proper and clear answering of the respective Homeland and Indian demands with the last ship, wherein formerly one used to state: . . . . cases that have been sent, and . . . . pieces or what is lacking that is still to be delivered, without having full certainty thereof, whereby the purpose of being able to see from those documents what has actually been fulfilled is entirely frustrated, for the better attainment of which Your High Nobles, in your respected missive to Nagapatnam of the ninth of June 1756, received here in copy in the past autumn, were pleased to order that nothing should be stated as fulfilled except that which has already actually been dispatched. For the blue berampaats, only half, or 100 pieces, have been contracted for, since the last ones sent resulted in a loss according to the requisition from the fatherland, and the slight reduction in price, combined with the abolished allowance of the servants, yields a difference of only 7 1/4 percent to the good. Chintzes having been demanded lately for Polo Chinco without naming the variety, we understood that they had to be ordinary Surat ones; but as the Chintzes Caboutria ordinary widths demanded by the Gentlemen Masters were specified as 13 long and 1 1/2 wide, as they are called in common parlance, although they are actually only 12 3/4 long and a generous 1 3/8 wide, we hope we have done no wrong in having them made in that manner, since it does not appear clearly from the requisition that it is Your High Right Honourables' intention to make a change in the length and width, which would inevitably entail a proportional increase in price. Furthermore, the chelassen have been contracted for the first time according to three new samples, marked No. 18, 19, and 20, against f 802:10:- and f 750:- the bale. Upon the representations made by the Broach factors that, owing to the excessive expensiveness of the gunny due to the cessation of supplies from Bengal, it was no longer possible for them to provide sound packing for f 9:- per bale, they were granted, subject to the approval of Your High Honourables, permission to charge f 10:10:- for it, just as at this main office, on condition that sound gunny is used for it, and the bales do not turn out too small or below the weight of 300 lb, while in other respects the previous regulation remains in force. Of the drugs demanded for the fatherland, the gum myrrh was obtained for f 125:12:8 per 100 lb, or f 30:7:8 less than last year; but for the gum or opopanax, f 304:10:-, or f 30:- more than last year, had to be paid, without however being able to satisfy the requisition completely; and aloe succotrina, which was obtainable last year for f 68:15:-, now not being available in sound quality for less than f 108:15:-, we have decided to satisfy only half of the demanded 6000 pounds. 101. 105 From Surat, 15 April 1758 The Ahmedabad toll and expenses incurred in the transport and transit of merchandise and necessities were, as far as Ahmedabad is concerned, excessively heavy, as appears from our resolution of 25 April 1757. Not only was one obliged to pay the usual toll of 6¼ per mille twice, namely once to the Moors who were masters of the city, and once to the Marhattas who had besieged it, but the freight could not be negotiated for less than 4¾ rupees per maund for the returns collected in the city and 4½ rupees per maund for those gathered in Kera, being glad nevertheless to be able to save them from destruction by that means. All this together, along with the expenditures one had to make to the latter for that purpose, amounting to the sum of 1902 guilders, 5 stivers, 8 penningen, totaling 6997 guilders, 11 stivers, besides a gift to the value of 37 guilders, 18 stivers in cost price, 358 guilders, 2 stivers, 8 penningen in sale value, as appears from two specifications entered and, because necessity knows no law, approved by our resolution of the ultimate of May 1757. Moreover, a claim was raised by that Marhatta field commander Damaji Gaikwad for 3000 guilders in cash, or rather the customary gifts for five years, and thus almost two years before the factory at Ahmedabad was restored. Over this, the factors were forbidden to enter into negotiations, with the instruction that, should necessity require it due to the surrender of the city to the Marhattas or other accidents, they should rather depart with bag and baggage to Kera, and from there travel further hither by the safest route. For the transport of the gift goods, medicines, and writing materials for that factory, 164 guilders, 11 stivers, 8 penningen was spent, which we approved in our session of 27 March last, though also running high, in consideration of the fatal conditions of the time, due to which one had to have everything escorted by native soldiers. For travel expenses, 123 guilders were paid to the assistant surgeon Jaspers, who arrived with the Ahmedabad caravan, and 59 guilders to the bookkeeper Bogaert, who departed for Broach; for the replacement of the assistant Josua Hen, whom one has placed in his stead at the secretariat here, it appearing from our resolutions of 12 June and 7 October last that this does not exceed the limitation made in our resolution of 10 February 1756 approved by your Right Excellencies; and furthermore, in accordance therewith, 535 guilders was validated for all the servants of Kutch Mandvi who came over from Nagar, being exactly as much as was fixed for that purpose by that decision, having consisted of one factor, the second, two clerks, and one assistant surgeon. The private toll amounted in 1756/1757 to 1640 guilders, 8 stivers, or 602 guilders, 4 stivers less than the previous financial year, due to the smaller number of ships that called here and the decline of trade, the cargo of the private vessel De Farsis, of which detailed mention will be made hereafter, having been mostly sold and cleared through customs only after the ultimate of August. The lord's duty on sold vessels amounts to only 105 guilders, or 2607 guilders, 10 stivers less than the year 1756/1757, and the revenues from the small seal 574 guilders, 4 stivers, or again 87 guilders, 12 stivers less than in the preceding financial year. The ordinary and extraordinary gifts in the year 1758/1759, both at this main factory and at the subordinate factories, amount to 17672 guilders, 3 stivers, 8 penningen in cost price, 22994 guilders, 19 stivers in sale value, being 13081 guilders, 8 stivers according to cost price and 17927 guilders, 19 stivers, 8 penningen in sale value less than in the year 1756, as is evident in detail from the following demonstration.
