From Surat under date 12 December anno 1758: As also to approve the completed sale of that confectionery for f 14: 6: 8 the cento lb, yielding an advance of 53 1/8 per cento. And further resolved to have the pepper brought back as unsalable, Jeddah saffron, and candied ginger sold here on the first occasion for whatever they will fetch, Likewise to qualify the secretary of this meeting for the receipt of the accompanying secretarial papers, in order to proceed henceforward in the secretariat of the main office. However, to deliver the trade books and papers to the trade office, as well as the invoice of the goods brought back from Nauwanagar, in order to confront the latter and serve as findings. Finally, the first minute sheets drafted by the Director of the outgoing letter to their High Excellencies were also reviewed, containing the respectful reply of this ministry to their esteemed latest missive answering the home country matters, and what was resolved upon the findings of the Honorable Examiner General on the trade books of this directorship for the year 1751/52, with which the members conformed completely, head by head. From Surat, dated 12 December 1758 Draft Instruction for the Captain Lieutenant at Sea and Equipage Master of the Surat Directorate, Jan Warnan Falk, departing with the hooker de Jonge Jacob and the small vessels de Jonge Susanne and de Beschermer for Danda Rajapore. As the sole purpose of this expedition is to retrieve the Company's servants and effects from Danda Rajapore and transport them hither, Your Honour shall, upon receipt of this, immediately embark upon the hooker de Jonge Jacob, and undertake the voyage as soon as possible. You shall take under your convoy, and protect against all pirates who might seek to attack it, the vessel Feseresan, which carries a Dutch pass and flag and belongs to the Company's second broker Mantchergi Gersedje, for as long as it remains with the fleet, as well as a vessel of the merchant Mhamett Sale Sittara, who is moving to Bassein, since it is traveling thither. Along with this, an original letter addressed to the Danda Rajapore ruler Sidi Jacoetchan is delivered to Your Honour, together with its Dutch translation, so that Your Honour may deliberate with the departing factors as to when it will be advisable to present it to the ruler in order to achieve our goal of a speedy removal. Your Honour shall take care that the goods to be shipped from Rajapore are properly weighed out to the commanders of the vessels, and that they duly sign for the receipt. Your Honour is provided with 70 corges of long gunny and five maunds of sail-yarn, to be used for packing the sugar canassers which will likely be somewhat fragile due to having lain there for a long time. The Shivaji peoples are currently no longer to be considered our enemies, and must therefore above all not be provoked or given cause for offense; yet they are to be trusted as little as other sea rovers. Seek no dangers, and let Your Honour's bravery, when necessity—and not an idle, misplaced ambition—demands that it be shown, always be paired with prudent conduct and a moderation well-befitting persons in the service of peace-loving merchants, by which civilized nations distinguish themselves from barbarians or savages. Do not spend two days on a matter that can be settled in a single one, bearing in mind that at this season every moment is precious, and that expedition is a virtue that can never do harm. We wish Your Honour a speedy round-trip voyage and remain, below, Your Honour's good friends. Furthermore, four letters from the Ahmedabad factors were read, namely one of the 24th of last month, one of the 3rd, and two of the 13th of this month. The second contained a detailed account of the surrender of that city by the Cambay Governor Noerdien Mhametchan, finally effected after a siege of more than 18 months, and the taking possession thereof by the new Maratha Governor Sedasse Ramtjender. And as the latter, on the occasion of the welcoming compliment paid to him by the said servants, had presented them with a horse for the Company, it was resolved thus far to approve their conduct towards the regents as mentioned in greater detail in the aforesaid missive, but at the same time to demand from them a report of the estimated value of the aforesaid horse, in order to issue the necessary orders regarding its booking, with instructions to sell the old Company horse to the highest bidder and allocate the proceeds hither. Since they also, on that occasion, presented sight gifts to General Damagie as well as to the said Governor and other Maratha head regents, and likewise delivered some gifts to these as well as previously to the Moorish government, whereof they transmit two different specifications or statements, the one amounting to f 390:- and the other to f 952:12:- purchase price and f 2609:7:8 sales price; it is resolved, before deciding upon this, to demand from the factors a clear comparison of those gifts against those previously made to persons of equal standing on similar occasions, since among other things no proportion can be found between the gift made in October 1756 to the then Moorish Governor, amounting to f 265:-:8 purchase price and f 483:12:8 sales price, and that which has now recently been made to the new Maratha Governor amounting to f 288:15:8 purchase price and as much as f 736:13:8 sales price; nor between f 106:10:- then, and f 172:10:- now to the Governor

From Souratta, dated 12 December 1758: for welcome gifts, and on that occasion presented to his servants; but on the other hand, in consideration of the state of the times, to pass the specification of the expenses incurred in the conveyance, etc., of the gift goods, medicines, and writing materials sent to them in the past year, amounting to ƒ164:11:8, provided that this document be inserted here. Specification of such expenses as have been incurred on the gift goods, writing materials, medicines, and ordinary provisions sent hither under the last of April of the past year by order of the Honorable Mr. Louis Taillefert, Extraordinary Councilor of the Dutch Indies and Director of the Surat Directorate, together with the Council there, and which, partly on account of the troubled times, had remained at Keraberist until now, which have now arrived here and for the freight and further expenses of which payment was made in the following manner, namely: For the agreed freight from Brootchia of 41 maund net at ƒ2:5: each comes to ƒ92:5:— Coolie and porterage wages upon the arrival of these goods at Brootchia to bring them from the vessels to the Company's lodge: 6:14:— The expenses incurred to load those goods again from the warehouses onto carts: 5:7:8 The cost charged to the goods at Hera to unload them from the carts and bring them into the warehouse: 3:15:— Carried forward: ƒ108:1:8 Souratta, dated 12 December 1758. From: 1 head peon at ƒ—:6:— per day is ƒ54:6:— 20 common peons at ƒ—:4:8 each per day: 841:10:— 21 heads of native soldiers have received in 181 days: ƒ168:16:— 20 heads taken into service on 15 November of the past year and likewise discharged this day, at ƒ—:4:8 each, is in 106 days: 477:—:— For the ƒ3 per month paid above their ordinary daily pay because of the dearness of foodstuffs in the last 2 months, namely January and February, paid to the aforesaid 41 heads: ƒ246:—:— Total: ƒ1594:16:— Below stood: Amed Abaad, the last day of February 1758. Yet concerning the sum of ƒ1475:6:8 brought forward in the specification for what was spent in the months of January and February for necessary board and expenses, although the servants appear to have construed in a rather broad sense the conditional authority granted to them by letter of the 28th of January last, it was resolved to pass the aforesaid amount subject to the approval of the High Indian Government, as it is trusted that the factors will be able at all times, if required, to confirm under oath that the actual costs could not have been kept lower, in which case it would be very harsh not to validate the same for them. From Souratta, dated 12 December anno 1758: nutmeg, weighing 164¼ lb peso, likewise at the last stipulated price of ƒ306:3: — per 100 lb, all to be paid after the expiration of 2 months, to allow the same to pass for this time, because the servants testify that it was impossible for them to stipulate more, and in this regard appeal to the qualification given to them by letters from this administration of 7 November last, which are hereby considered to have expired, while it was also deemed fit to strictly adhere in the future to the order reiterated on the same day of ult:o December 1756, namely henceforth not to sell any merchandise that the Company exclusively holds, such as the spices and the Japanese copper, unless the same will yield at least 10 percent more than at this main office, and to send to the factors for their information a note of the latest net sale prices of sugar and other merchandise here. Since the new Maratha government has not only summoned all native merchants, money-changers, and heads of the various castes, presented them in the presence of the factors with turbans and sashes, and encouraged them to continue trade under the promise of providing money for 6 months without interest to those who might need it for the aforementioned purpose, and also most amicably requested the said factors to revive trade from their side as well, with the assurance that the parwanas granted by General Raghunath Rao would be approved by him in all respects, but such invitations and promises have also been most forcefully repeated to the Director himself in letters from both Governor Ramchander and General Damaji and the tax collector Sewaram, as appears from the translations made thereof, His Honour communicated to the meeting the draft replies to the aforementioned letters. It was resolved to send them off in such manner, and to write back to the factors that the contracting of the Ahmedabad assortments has already taken place here, since one could not foresee when the troubles would come to an end, and because the latest ones received from there, if one also calculates the excessive charges, cost much more than obtaining the same in Souratta, and that one does not intend to send them any merchandise other than what they see a chance of selling before the month of October at the prices mentioned in the letters of ult:o December 1756, 25 February, and 7 November 1757; also that one looks forward to a requisition thereof as soon as possible, as well as for what they might need for gifts and the household, in order to send the one and the other to them; on the said occasion, an under- or third surgeon will also be sent to them instead of the under-surgeon Jaspersz presently stationed here. From Souratta, dated 12 December 1758. Circular missive of 24 June 1755 having been handled entry by entry by the Director, assisted by the members Sweers and Kellij, and the paper drawn up thereof having been brought by His Honour into the meeting for reconsideration, it was, after attentive reading, approved and resolved to agree with it in all parts and to send the same as a separate annex to Batavia, and consequently to excuse the insertion thereof into this document. And among other things, regarding the ƒ1582:16 charged in the past financial year in excess of what the memorandum of retrenchment dictates for the board money of 11 gunners, corporals, and quartermasters, item 92 soldiers, assistants, and sailors, and regarding the provision of arrack, it was resolved to refer to the secret resolution of this meeting of 10 April 1756, demonstrating in detail the danger of making changes in this respect, which is why one dares not touch that matter again without express further orders. And as for dhotis and bethilles for dhotis, lantern cloths, etc., consumed in the house of the Director, ƒ271:8 was charged in the latest financial year, and the abolition of this last entry is not mentioned in the memorandum of retrenchment, it was deemed to correspond most closely with Their High Honours' intention, and consequently resolved, to validate no more than 78 rupees or ƒ117 annually for it, being still slightly less than in anno 1752/3, and to have the remainder that has been charged in excess since the last day of March 1756 counted back into the Company's treasury by the purveyor, in favour of previous years' charges and incidentals, naturally for as far as the past financial year is concerned. From Souratta, dated 12 December 1758. it was resolved to have the item of f 324 for monthly wages paid to native judicial servants counted back into the treasury by the fiscal. And since some savings might also be made on the present establishment of junior merchants, it was deemed proper to note that in this directorate one could very well manage with one junior merchant as factor at Brootchia, one as factor at Amedsabaad, one as secretary of policy, one as cashier and invoice keeper, and four without current employment as permanent deputies in the trade warehouses, at the bazaar, or for the cloth trade, collators at the respective offices, and to attend to all other commissions, thus eight junior merchants in total, who, performing everything properly, can find enough work when the ships are present, but the last four of whom are virtually idle the rest of the time. That it is, on the contrary, entirely different with regard to the clerks, of whom no more than 13, both bookkeepers and scribes, are allocated to the entire directorate according to the memorandum of retrenchment, and in the most recently concluded financial year there were 26 of both combined, and that although what was necessary regarding this has been stated in the general description now dispatched, this ministry nevertheless considers it its duty to emphasize further in the aforesaid comparison that it is impossible with the designated number of clerks at this office to keep the clerical work at the respective offices from falling into arrears, as can be gathered, among other things, from the fact that at an office such as Cochim, where the work of the secretariat and trade office, as far as can be determined, is not less, or at least not heavier than here, as many as 20 scribes are permitted under the aforesaid memorandum. From Surat under date the 12th December Anno 1758: To the Right Honourable Louis Taillefert Extraordinary Councillor of the Dutch East Indies as well as Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate Right Honourable Sir, Pursuant to the esteemed order of Your Right Honour, we, the undersigned commissioned members from the Council of Justice of this Company, presented ourselves to the Merchant and Warehouse Master, the Honourable Jan Anthonij Sweers de Landas, and there, in the presence of the Merchant and Fiscal, the Honourable David Kellij, and in the presence of the skipper of the ship Amerongen lying here in the roads, Christeaan Hansz, confronted against the standard test weights of this Company, which we found properly sealed, a weight of 50 pounds brought ashore by the aforementioned skipper, as well as two 50-pound weights in use here at the trade warehouses, which according to the declaration of the aforementioned Warehouse Master were among those recently received via the ship Rhoon, and the very same with which the 399 small chests of bar copper already unloaded from the vessel Amerongen were weighed; the three mentioned weights being sealed around their handles above. We found none of the three in agreement with the standard weight, but rather in the following manner: The weight of the skipper, 2 loot heavier; that of the Company's office marked by us No. 4, 4 loot heavier; and that marked No. 2, 4½ loot heavier. And we have, as customary, sealed the said three weights with our usual seals, that of the Honourable Fiscal, and that of the skipper. Surat under date the 12th December Anno 1758: and placed on the one brought by that seaman Amerongen, and on those of the Office, No. 4 and 2. We have also, according to Your Right Honour's order, provisionally, or until there shall be time and opportunity to confront all the weights in use at both warehouses against the standard or reference weight and to equalize them therewith, weighed two of the same, each of fifty pounds, which are chopped with the aforementioned four seals, against the reference weight and made them equal in heaviness to the same by riveting iron rings with sail twine, sealed thereto, and thereafter safely stored the standard weights back in the small box, which we have likewise duly sealed. Herewith we hope to have satisfied Your Right Honour's esteemed intention, and take the liberty to call ourselves with humility: below stood: Right Honourable Sir, lower: Your Right Honour's very obedient and bounden servants, was signed: Willem Blaaukamer and I. Oudenhooven; lower: in my presence, signed: David Kellij; in the margin: Surat the 30th March Anno 1758; and beneath that: in my presence, signed: C. Hansz. Whereupon, after deliberation, it was resolved to send the weight of the skipper as well as the 2 weights of this main office, sealed in the manner aforesaid, to Batavia, as well as to credit the authorities with the difference between the weight with which the aforesaid 399 small chests of copper were weighed and the standard weight, amounting to 4½ loot on each small chest, or 36 lb for 399 small chests, and when there shall be time and opportunity, to confront all the active weights at the warehouses against the reference weight and to equalize them therewith. Furthermore, the report of the Junior Merchant Kroonenberg, requisitioned on account of the difference found between the Danda Rajapuri books and the cash balance, was submitted by the Director for reading, being of the following content: To the Right Honourable Louis Taillefert Extraordinary Councillor of the Dutch East Indies, as well as Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate Honourable, Right Honourable, Commanding Sir, Pursuant to Your Right Honour's esteemed order contained in the extract resolution of the 2nd of this month to provide a report explaining how it is that up to this day this main office has not been credited with or accounted for a sum of Rupees 5000 given as a down payment to the undersigned by the deceased merchant Joan Appa upon the sale of a parcel of merchandise, and for which the cash account in the books of that residency was nevertheless credited in November 1756 and Surat was debited, he has the honour to bring to Your Right Honour's notice with all submission that in the month of August 1756 he sold a parcel of merchandise there to the said merchant, whereby it was stipulated in writing that these monies could not be cleared before the last parcel of goods had been collected. From Surat, dated 12 December 1738. results, after mature consideration of what was transacted concerning this matter in the aforementioned resolutions, and especially of that which the factors brought forward in their defense by their letter of the 15th ultimo regarding the damaged imported manufactures that were sold for their account at public auction pursuant to the resolution of 6 December last, although it cannot be denied that at Denda Rajapoer one actually has no warehouses or enclosed premises suitable for airing such goods, it was unanimously resolved to charge the loss incurred thereon, amounting to f 10158:19:8 or 42 percent according to the vendue roll and proceeds submitted on 25 January of this year, to the account of the said factors, each for half, pending further instructions from Their High Excellencies, with the sole exception of the lesser yield compared to the cost price of such damaged sarges and perpetuanas as were contained in a crate No 3, since it appeared from the repacking note that several damaged pieces were packed in there with intact pieces, which amount it was accordingly deemed proper to have compensated by the warehouse master Sweers, leaving for the rest to its merits or demerits that which the factors advanced regarding the condition of the crates at the time of shipping, contrary to what was brought forward in that regard by Commander Verle at the session of 16 December of the past From Surat, dated 12 December anno 1758: year, without supporting the same with the slightest proof.
