From Surat under date the 12th December 1758. of the petitions, which this time are not very large and even for the Fatherland are very small, must also be observed as far as possible, and that if no coercion is used in the contracting of prices, but the matter proceeds fairly in all respects, one cannot see but that the one can very well be combined with the other. And whereas they report that they have allowed the collection of the black cloths to continue until the 23rd of February, because funds had been advanced on them, and that of those cloths only a few still remain uninspected, concerning which they await the orders of this ministry, it was resolved to write to them that allowing the collection to continue on the old demands until the new contracting was effected ought to have taken place not only regarding the black cloths, but in respect of all returns without distinction, the determination of the ultimate of February having been based on the expectation that one would then already have been able to determine oneself in respect of the allocation, which, owing to the tarrying of the broker concerning the statement of the prices and the high setting thereof, could only take place today. The postscript of a letter sent to the said factors on the 19th ultimo having caused them to raise difficulty about sending the already accepted goods resting with them hither before the broker had declared to them that he would be liable for all such rebate as might yet fall upon the old collection, because they are warned therein that such rebate as might fall upon the cloths on account of inferior quality is intended henceforth to be paid by those who accept goods below the samples without concerning themselves with the guarantee on the broker; so it was thought fit, in order to make their fancied difficulty residing therein cease, to add for elucidation thereto that this only looks to the future, but by no means to the present or past time. And whereas they also once more insist upon a relief of funds for the daily expenses, it is understood to note here that this request, made in their letter of the 9th ultimo, has already, with the prior knowledge and consent of the Council members, been satisfied on the 28th ultimo by the sending of a bill of exchange amounting to Rs. 2000:- or f.3000:-. Lastly, the minute sheets of the formal description to be dispatched were resumed, from where one had left off on the 21st of the previous month up to the Article E carpentry and repair, with which contents the members fully and in all parts concurred. From Souratta, dated 12 December anno 1758: That no negligence has occurred regarding the debit running accounts concerning their collection, and that in their opinion no debt is hopeless except that of van der Laar, unless one must also say the same of the Cambay Governor, about whom we do not have much confidence that the Honourable Company will collect much, for reasons mentioned under the article of the debtors. Regarding the keeping of the books we know nothing to say, since the errors that were therein have been redressed. Herewith we hope to have satisfied Your Right Honourable Worships' order, and take the liberty to call ourselves with all humility and respect: underneath stood: Right Honourable Worshipful Sir; lower: Your Right Honourable Worships' very humble servants; was signed: D. Kellij and Wm. Blaauwkamer; in the margin: Souratta, 10 April 1758. Whereupon, after deliberation, and the books presented by the Honourable Head Administrator to the assembly for examination having been inspected as far as time permitted, it was somewhat surprising to find the warehouse master Sweers among the debtors for an amount of f 50:12: on account of what he was short on the Malacca benzoin on ult-o August 1757; and as upon investigation it appeared that this was caused because one neglected to draw up the necessary warrants in time to have the aforesaid amount counted into the Company's treasury, it was decreed on that occasion that the warrants for reimbursements shall henceforth always have to be drawn up by the Trade Bookkeeper, From Souratta, dated 12 December 1758. on forfeiture, in case of neglect, of one sixth of their amount for the benefit of the burial grounds of the Company's European servants, reserving his recourse against the secretary, in case the latter cannot show that he delivered an extract from the resolutions of this Board whereby such reimbursement was ordered. Regarding the entry of f 30 for which the former Commissioner at Bassijn, Hendrik Kroonenburg, is debited on account of improperly having received too much money from the treasury, it was thought fit to note that this amount, as well as the f 1500:— which he had to place in the treasury according to the resolution of the 31st ultimo on account of insufficient accounted cash at Denda Rajapoer, have indeed, according to the oral declaration of the Cashier upon the warrant of the Lord Director, actually been paid and settled by him. From Souratta dated 12 Dec: Anno 1758. from the 3rd of this month during the first three years might be imposed upon the bookkeeper Carel Hen, released to batavia, as former second of Ketsmandue, up to a sum of Ro/a 1600. –– or f 2400: with which, being according to order, it was understood to be satisfied and to insert the aforesaid document herein. Today, the 3rd of April Anno seventeen hundred fifty-eight Appeared before me Otto Hendrik Ruperti, Secretary of police of this directorship, under the jurisdiction of the Right Honorable Louis Taillefert, Extraordinary Councillor of Netherlands India and Director, present, the witnesses to be mentioned hereafter, the Honorable Willem blaauwkamer and Hendrik kroonenbergh, both junior merchants here, who declared, as they do hereby, to stand surety for the prompt payment of whatever might be imposed as compensation upon the bookkeeper Carel Hen, former second of the Factory Ketsmandui, presently on his departure to batavia, on account of his aforesaid service and administration from today during the next three years, up to a sum of one thousand Rixdollars or R/a 1600: and to set themselves as sureties and co-principals, renouncing therefore the benefits of the Order of Division and Excussion, having been fully and properly informed of the force thereof by me, the Secretary, binding therefor their Honors the appearers' persons and goods, both movable and immovable, submitting the same to the constraint of all the Lord's laws and judges; but on the other hand he, Carel Hen, being present hereby, promised to indemnify and free his sureties entirely and the sureties each other for one half, in the matter of the suretyship, and to hold them harmless and indemnified, under the same obligation as above. 453 From Surat, dated the 12th of December 1758: On the 9th of this month, there was brought forward in the first place the valuation of the horse received as a gift, which, having been appraised by riding masters and other connoisseurs, was valued at Ro/a 150:— or ƒ 225: which low price, as well as the difficulty of selling the old Company's horse pursuant to the order given to them by letter of the 28th past, they attribute to the abundance of such mounts currently in the city, for which reason it was resolved to authorize him to take in the first-mentioned horse at the appraised value of ƒ 223 for the benefit of the gifts account, and to send the other one hither with the Caffila, in case no buyer can be found for it at cost in the meantime.
