At the session of the 9th current, we resolved to put the remaining porcelain from the aforementioned parcel—which consists in part of assortments that are not used by the natives here—up for auction once more, and to let them go for the purchase price, not counting the damaged and cracked pieces; but should they not be able to fetch that, to send the same invendible items back to Batavia per the bearer of this in new cases to be made for that purpose, since those in which they were received, according to the report submitted by the special commissioners for their inspection, were so battered and damaged, all but ten of them, that they could no longer serve. 213 From Souratta the 27 April 1759 for standing reasons. is uncertain. sale at Amed Abaad again a few were sold on the 14th thereafter, but being unable to obtain carpenters because of a prohibition issued on behalf of the Regents and the English Gentlemen to the same, the masons, smiths, and other craftsmen, though because of the alongside interdiction, not to work directly or indirectly for the Dutch without prior special permission from the same, on pain of paying a fine of fifty Rupees head for head and a severe correction in addition, which was applied to some coolies who had dared to do so, in the presence of a Peon of our aforementioned last mentioned well-meaning friends, it is, while progress has been made this far with the repairing of this, still uncertain whether the latter part of that resolution will indeed be able to be brought into execution. Except the sale of van der Sleijden. in our respectful letter of the 12th of March last, so we have, after attentive reconsideration of that paper, regarded the same as fully satisfactory and therefore found it good to release him from all responsibility in that regard as far as this administration is concerned, as we also had to decide the same with respect to the account of the following Commissioners Sanderus and van der Heijden, accompanying these in the same manner as far as concerns the sale made during the time that they were both present there, but on the other hand one has judged insufficient no for his discharge what the said van der Sleijden alleges regarding the sale of 4747¼ lb of cloves made by him before the arrival of Sanderus for ƒ513:2:8 or ƒ11: 17:8 below the stipulated price, which could not be noticed by this administration because in his letters mention was only made of the stipulated price, which he claims not to have known properly, but to have regulated himself From Souratta the 27th April Year 1759 regulated himself according to a note of the sale at Souratta handed over to him, according to which the same was sold here for ƒ500 the Cento the lb of heavy weight, the more so because he was also ignorant of the price for which Kronenberg had sold this spice, which he could not check, because his aforementioned predecessor, thinking only to make a short excursion hither for a short time, had not handed over the trade books to him, all of which in our opinion indeed shows that he acted in good faith, and imagined he was doing well, but yet does not fully justify him; since being in uncertainty regarding such a delicate point he ought first to have asked for orders so as not to burn his hands, wherefore one has also decided to make him pay the aforesaid difference amounting to ƒ563: 14:8 into the Company's Treasury to the benefit of the account of past years' profit and loss. Signed: I: Sanderus and J: V dr Sleijden Simonsz: Whereas the employees, in their defense concerning the low prices of the sugar, among 218 From Souratta the 27th of April A:o 1759 concerning outstanding debts others alleged that they had already sold the intact cannassers of good sugar among other merchandise at Poene before receiving our order not to relinquish it for less than the latest sale price at this head office, as the Maratha prince had given orders for the restitution of the goods still in existence, so as to make as much haste as possible therewith given the fickleness of that Court, and that they had relaxed their terms so far with the loose sugar spoiled by red soot from the fire and the seawater used in extinguishing it merely to get rid of it, for which there was otherwise no possibility. It having appeared from a note handed over to the Director by the aforesaid Commissioners Sanderus and van der Sleijden that there was still outstanding among various merchants at Denda Rajapoer a sum of ƒ 12718:11:8 on account of merchandise sold and delivered there, we resolved in the session of the 10th of this past March to leave that item provisionally to their accountability, and in the meantime to demand a report from them as to why, contrary to the known orders, they had delivered those goods before the proceeds thereof had been received into the Company's treasury; regarding which they state in their general sales report that said sale had taken place three days before the invasion of the Marhettas into Denda Rajapoer, not on credit but on condition of cash payment upon full delivery; that on the very day the Marhettas made the landing, they were still busy with the weighing out in the morning; and that when they set foot on land, two chests of spices, some cannassers of sugar, and a portion of the tin were still lying in front of the residence of Commissioner Sanderus, which were all plundered; that the merchants had declared 219 From Souratta the 27th of April A:o 1759 continued, and on their declaration that the merchants were good for it that, due to that misfortune, they were not in a position to pay immediately according to the agreement the amount for the bought and received goods, yet with promises to satisfy it as soon as possible; that in the meantime van der Sleijden was transported to Thanna and subsequently Sanderus to Poena as prisoners; that by cash payment among persons of credit, here no less than in Europe, cash on the barrelhead was generally not understood, but by it was meant a matter of eight days after delivery, and thus whenever payment was made within that time, it was counted by all merchants as prompt payment; and that the said merchants still gave good hopes for the satisfaction; after consideration of which we, in the Council of Policy, asked the said Sanderus and van der Sleijden upon the oath by which they are bound to the Company, whether they saw a prospect of still collecting those monies if one of them both were sent to Rajapoer for that purpose.

From Souratta the 27 April Anno 1759 sent by and for their account, and upon their answer that the debtors upon their departure from there were good and sufficient, that they indeed could not judge precisely and positively of their present state, but nevertheless trusted that they were, it was resolved to have those moneys collected, understanding that the last-mentioned person, being the most active, should be allowed to depart thither, enjoying nothing other than the most necessary traveling expenses in case he were forced to return overland, and double board-money as long as the commission lasts, with the recommendation that as soon as he receives any moneys, he remit the same in sufficient bills of exchange, leaving for the rest that matter still for their account; although it would be impossible in this country to sell anything of consequence if one wished to bind oneself strictly to the order not to deliver anything until after the amount has been received in cash, which has indeed sometimes been ordered on paper, but as far as is known to each and every one of us, or as we have been able to learn or verify, has never yet been complied with in practice. The low stock of cloves and the great demand for that spice compels us hereby to insist further upon a complete and above all an early fulfillment of our requisition for the same. Concerning the collection of returns, we have further only to inform Your Excellencies that among the Ahmedabad assortments there are no grounds that could be procured there as cheaply as at this head office; and although the dyed and printed goods there usually turn out slightly better than here, in consideration of the heavy charges and the danger of transportation, one has had to abandon all collection at that office, and instruct the servants to remit the cash on hand, which according to the forwarded balance of the cash as of the last of February 1759 amounts to fully f 30504:5:—, hither as soon as possible by bill of exchange. When we demanded from the Brootchia factors a statement of the closest prices for which the returns obtainable there could be procured, we at the same time warned them that no other goods would be allotted to their office for procurement than those which the broker offered to procure at lower rates than the Sourat supplier, except for some assortments that he had recently procured well and which his said competitors would not accept at lower prices, as that seems to be the best means to be served no less than the English gentlemen both regarding quality and prices, and it is no more than fair to give preference to those who deliver the goods best or cheapest, insofar as that applies. Upon the complaints of the servants that the indigo this year was obtainable very late, due to the hindrance that the Maratha rulers had caused regarding the sale in order to compel the suppliers of that product to come to terms with them, whereby the procurement of the black and blue cloths was greatly delayed, it was resolved to accept those cloths at Brootchia until mid-April, and at this head office, like the printed cloths, until the last of April on the old requisitions; also qualifying the servants once and for all with respect to all other linens to proceed with accepting everything that is delivered of good quality in the same manner, whenever the general contracting, on account of troubles that have arisen or otherwise, cannot take effect on or before the last of February, until such time as the general distribution of the requisitions shall have been made and an extract thereof received by them. From Surat, 27 April 1759 on condition of succumbing in the middle of the rainy season, but has nevertheless shown himself willing to take that burden upon himself if it could not be otherwise, to provide a surgeon and some medicines to accompany him, whereupon he undertook the journey on 9 July, but only arrived at Bassaim on 1 August and at Poena on the last day of the same month, and was obliged to remain there until the last day of December due to the usual delays of that Court and various obstacles and hindrances encountered, which another person might not have cleared out of the way so easily. His instruction, as well as the letters exchanged with him and the commissioners Sanderus and van der Sleijden, are transmitted on this occasion, and we take the liberty to refer to them regarding a series of instructions given, orders issued, and remarks made on the successive activities of those servants, all aiming to salvage the confused Rajapoer estate as best as possible, to which Kroonenberg contributed his part to the extent that he was able to depart again from Poena on the last day of December after having stipulated the following: I. Release of all Dutch servants and effects still existing in the territory of the Marhattas. II. Payment for the goods successively taken from the warehouse at Thanna for the service of the prince or his ministers at the latest Rajapoer purchase prices. III. For the rest, the servants, in their accounting and compliance with our special requisition, have given some reasons regarding their silence concerning the Rajapore cash box that was held by the first commissioner Sanderus and was duly accounted for during their arrest, at a time when they both drew bills of exchange upon us as if they had nothing in their possession. These reasons, even if not fully satisfactory, are at least of such a nature that, in the absence of proof that the matter stood otherwise, one cannot record them as positively reprehensible, wherefore we have also thought fit to let that matter rest, since the Company has suffered no damage thereby. The English gentlemen recount that a week or two ago a Spanish ship from the Philippines arrived at Bombay, measuring one thousand tons, bringing along seven thousand picols of powdered sugar, besides a large quantity of sappanwood and cowries, item a parcel of spelter, and that the intention was to sell the ship as well as the cargo there. Meanwhile, those friends here continue to behave in all respects as rulers both of the city and the castle, being faithfully and with much zeal assisted therein by the Naib Faroschan appointed by them, who, it is assured, does not fail to give an account every evening to the English chief, Mr. Spencer, in person or through his Diwan, of what has occurred in the city and to confer with him about it. That deputy has also procured the office of amin or sheriff for his own son, with the displacement of Sidi Peboet, whom we were previously erroneously informed had been reinstated. Regarding the servants, in our previous letter the expression of thanks was omitted of Lieutenant Anesbeek for his promotion to that capacity, and that he, alongside the pay bookkeeper Wargaren and junior merchant Engel Cransz, has duly taken the oath of purgation for their promotions and appointments.
