From Cape of Good Hope, the 3rd of March 1759. To Batavia To the same as before The ship Schagen having departed from here yesterday carrying our letter of the 28th of February last enclosed in copy, in conformity with what was advised in the aforementioned missive the bearer of this, the ship De Liefde, is now also dispatched today, with which we have the honor to send to your Right Honorable Worships the following, namely: 50 leggers ordinary white wine 86 lb fine garden seeds 67 lb coarse garden seeds 15 lb canary seeds As is further evidenced by the bill of lading invoice made of this and accompanying this; meanwhile we feel obliged to bring to your Right Honorable Worships' attention that since the 40 hoeden of forge coal shipped in the fatherland in this vessel for this Government among other goods lie scattered throughout the entire ship, and one has had no opportunity to have the same unloaded because of the full work regarding the dispatching of the recently departed return ships, we, both so as not to detain the said vessel any longer on that account as well as because one is currently still reasonably provided with the aforementioned fuel, have had to leave the 40 hoeden of forge coal in it. For this reason we take the liberty of sending along with this a small invoice thereof, on which are also noted 57 pieces of barrel staves that likewise had been shipped in the bearer of this for this Government, but could not be found here. Besides which we have the honor to send enclosed in this to your Right Honorable Worships a further 10 secret slips regarding the signal flags that will be displayed from the Lion's Head and Rump here during the coming year 1760 for the security of the Honorable Company's return ships. The boat of the bearer of this, which pushed off from shore here with the quartermaster and 8 sailors on the 24th of the past month of February at nightfall in order to bring the chief mate and chief surgeon of the Bengal return ship Wiltrijk to the said vessel, not having reappeared to date, we, notwithstanding it is very presumable that the said boat, on account of the sudden sharp south-easterly wind that arose, will not have dared to leave the ship again and thus remained on the aforementioned ship Wildrijk and has gone to sea with it, immediately sent a country vessel to Dassen Island to inquire whether the same might have made landfall there. Having as yet received no tidings of this, we have meanwhile not failed to provide this ship De Liefde with another boat. From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of March 1759. Per the ship De Liefde Batavia To the same as before While the bearer of this, with our respectful letter of the 3rd of the present month, is solely waiting for a favorable wind to leave this roadstead in furtherance of its voyage, the outbound ships Vlissingen, with 40 dead and 25 sick, and Walcheren, with 100 deceased and 22 disabled, arrived here yesterday toward evening. These hulls, having departed together from before Rammekens on the 26th of November past, are otherwise in good condition, wherefore one will have the same pursue their voyages as speedily as possible to their respective destined places, namely Vlissingen to Batavia and Walcheren to Ceylon. Meanwhile, we cannot refrain from communicating to your Right Honorable Worships that the painful tidings were brought to us with the said two ships that the ship equipped by the Chamber of Delft [illegible] Wherewith concluding this, having commended your Right Honorable Worships' most esteemed persons together with the momentous interests of the Honorable Company to the protection of the Almighty, we remain with due respect. From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of March 1759 From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of March 1759. the Erfprins has been wrecked near Calais, but that the crew assigned to it was nevertheless saved, without the officers of these two arrived ships having been able to report to us further whether the cash and further cargo of the said wrecked vessel were also salvaged or not; besides which it was also reported to us by the mentioned ship's officers that on the 26th of the recently passed month of February they hailed an outbound Danish Company ship and learned from the same that the Amsterdam ship Scholtenburg, which had lain for some days at St Jago with the said Danish vessel, had departed from there on the 28th of December last bound hither, so that that vessel is likewise expected here at any moment; while the aforementioned officers were also unable to report to us when the said ship Scholtenburg departed from Texel, nor whether prior to its departure, or together with it, any of the Amsterdam ships sailed out. And since there were found on the ship Vlissingen two packets consigned to Your Right Honorable Excellencies and numbered No 63 and 83, we have, in accordance with their honored orders, removed them from that vessel and placed them on the bearer of this for speedier delivery. No 6 Authenticated copy of the report of the commissioned members from the Court of Justice here, who tasted the mentioned wines and found them in good condition. No 7 Receipt for the empty water casks which were removed from the bearer of this for the benefit of this Government. 8 A packet under a flying seal, marked: Pay accounts for the ship Noord Beveland. 9 Expense account of that which was supplied to the keel at this place. From Cape of Good Hope the 10th of March 1759 From Cape of Good Hope the 10 March 1759 Let this serve to accompany that keel, and the bearer of this, on which have been shipped here the following goods, namely: 50 leaguers of white peasant Drakenstein wine 4 half-aams of wine tent 4 ditto ditto Pontak 50 pieces of prepared hides, boei leather 48000 pieces of hard almonds 42000 pieces of crack almonds 40 lb of ordinary apples 50 lb of sour ditto 200 pieces of [illegible] pears 200 pieces of dried whole pears 250 lb of ditto peaches 15 lb of ditto figs As shown in greater detail in the accompanying bill of lading and invoice, in addition to which we have the honour to send Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable four aams of white Constantia wine as a present, the red having turned out so poorly that we did not dare to send any of it. This is further accompanied by copies of the records of the persons promoted by us on this vessel, as well as a copy of the letter written hither by the Right Honourable Lords Majors in the Fatherland under date of 20 October last and brought here with the ship Vlissingen, to which we most respectfully refer. We shall furthermore note that the Landschoot, which according to what was advised in our above-mentioned letter of the 3rd of this month was sent to Dassen Island, has since returned from there without having found the missing boat of De Liefde or any of the crew at the aforesaid island, so that we hope they were left on the return ship Wildrijk and thus remain safe. Wherewith concluding this, after having commended Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable highly esteemed persons, together with the weighty interests of the Honourable Company, to Jehovah's protection, we remain with due respect. From Cape of Good Hope the 11 March 1759 Per the ship Noord-Beveland From Cape of Good Hope the 11 March 1759 Batavia To as before We have the honour to address this to Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable as a dutiful communication that today in the early morning there arrived at this roadstead, with 24 dead, 18 sick, but for the rest in good condition, the outbound ship Scholtenburg, which having departed from Texel on the 22nd of October last, subsequently stayed in Portsmouth from the 5th to the 27th of November thereafter, and at the island of St. Jago from the 17th to the 27th of December; its officers having further informed us that upon their departure from Texel the ships De Vrouwe Geertruijda, Kronenburg, De Vrouwe Petronella Maria, and De Vrouwe Elizabeth Dorothea were also lying ready to sail; of which the first three are destined for China and the last-mentioned for Bengal; wherefore we hope to see those keels also appear in good condition at this place shortly. Meanwhile, for the rest, we take the liberty to send to Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable herewith two letters addressed to the same and numbered ditto 31 and 32, which, having been on the aforesaid ship Scholtenburg, were removed therefrom by us in conformity with Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable honoured order, and placed upon the bearer of this for speedier delivery. The bearer of this, being hindered until now in the continuation of its voyage by the persistent contrary winds, gives us the occasion again to communicate to Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable that early this morning there arrived at this roadstead, with 62 deceased and 22 disabled, but otherwise in good condition, the ship De Waaksaamheijd, equipped by the Enkhuizen Chamber, which, having departed from Texel on the 27th of November last with the Amsterdam ship De Vrouwe Elizabeth Dorothea, on the 8th of this month of March from the same [illegible] To as before Batavia And herewith concluding this, we commend Your Excellencies, the Right Honourable highly esteemed persons, together with the weighty interests of the Honourable Company, to the safekeeping of the Almighty, and remain with due respect. 61 From Cape of Good Hope, 13 March 1759 From Cape of Good Hope, 13 March 1759 has run aground, while according to reports from its officers, the ships mentioned in our previous postscript of the day before yesterday, the Vrouwe Geertruijda, Kronenburg, and Vrouwe Petronella Maria, also lay fully ready to sail, but due to a lack of sufficient water to navigate out of the Texel channel, had to remain at anchor. We also take the liberty to dutifully advise Your Right Honorable Grand Worships that today in our meeting it had to be resolved to employ the ship Scholtenburg, which has been largely unloaded for this government, to retrieve the cargo of the Bengali return ship De Naarstigheid lingering at Rio de la Goa, and we have therefore, for the best service of the Honorable Company, also decided to distribute the 48 chests of specie that had been unloaded therefrom, as well as the military personnel on board, across the other homeland ships present here. Pursuant to which ten of those chests having been shipped in this vessel, we have the honor to transmit to Your Right Honorable Grand Worships herewith the bill of lading drawn up thereof; while we shall furthermore not fail to make more detailed mention of the aforementioned mission of the Scholtenburg to Rio de la Goa in our next letters to depart with the upcoming shipping opportunity. In the hope that our respectful letter of the 10th of this current month of March, which, along with our further notes of the 11th and 13th ditto, departed per the ship Noord Beveland that left from here on the 15th following, may already have been delivered to your Right Honorable Worships prior to the presentation of this letter, we shall, adhering thereto, now let this serve to accompany the ship de Waaksaamheid, which has since also become ready for departure, wherewith we have the honor to send to your Right Honorable Worships the following goods, namely: 51,000 pounds of hard almonds 49,000 pounds of crack almonds 50 pounds of saffron peppers Appearing more broadly from the bill of lading and invoice drawn up for this purpose and sent herewith, which is accompanied by the copies of the muster rolls of the persons reformed here on this vessel; to which we likewise respectfully refer. Having, in our aforesaid humble follow-up note of the 13th of this month, among other things also briefly advised your Right Honorable Worships of the intention regarding the ship Scholtenburg to Rio de Lagoa, for the transfer of the cargo of the Bengal return ship de Naarstigheijd lingering there, with the further addition that we would by no means fail to make more detailed mention hereof at the next opportunity by ship, we shall therefore, accordingly, now have the honor to say that after it was made known by the undersigned Governor in our council meeting of the aforesaid 13th of this month that, just as was determined by the resolution of the 19th of December past, among other matters, to fetch and bring over hither the remaining cargo as well as the surviving crewmen of the mentioned ship de Naarstigheijd from there at the very first opportunity and by the most suitable means that could be devised for this purpose, and we had now obtained at hand the aforementioned ship Scholtenburg, which, being loaded mostly for this government, would consequently not only have to be unloaded here for the greatest part, but that this vessel, moreover, being of the same charter as de Naarstigheijd, this was now in every respect a very favorable opportunity to be able to have the cargo of that vessel transported hither in the most convenient manner in accordance with the aforesaid decision. Hereupon it was further alleged by His Honor regarding this matter that when one came to consider that both with the unloading of the mentioned ship Scholtenburg at this roadstead, as well as making the voyage to Rio de Lagoa, taking in the goods of de Naarstigheijd at that place, and returning back hither from there, so much time would probably pass that the mentioned hull could not be back here until after mid-July of this year, and thus would have to be retained at this place until the departure of the return ships of the coming year, it would on that account be far more advantageous to the service of the Honorable Company if one were to wait some time yet before sending a ship to Rio de Lagoa, and that one of the Easter ships were employed for this purpose, which, likewise being laden with goods for this Government, would consequently also have to be unloaded here either in whole or in part, considering that if one of those hulls, which generally come to appear at this Government in the latter part of August or beginning of September, were sent off to Rio de Lagoa in October thereafter, the same could then still be back here in December of this, or at the latest in January or February of the coming year, in order to then be dismissed to the Netherlands either with the return ships of the first or the second dispatch; but that against this, these principal difficulties came to present themselves again, namely firstly that, since the river de Lagoa cannot be navigated by ships of 150 feet and one would therefore strictly have to employ a ship of 136 or 140 feet for fetching the aforesaid goods, it was nevertheless very uncertain whether among the aforesaid ships to arrive here in August or September and laden with goods for this Government, one of the latter-mentioned charter would be found, and secondly, that the crew of de Naarstigheijd could also come to die out in the meantime and the aforesaid costly cargo, through such an unexpected event, for which one nevertheless, due to the known unhealthiness of the place where that vessel lies, had reason to fear, would then run great danger of being despoiled by the natives, over and above other mishaps to which the same could further remain exposed; wherefore the Lord Governor came to submit for consideration what in this matter ought now best to be done or left undone for the greatest service of the Honorable Company, first

691 From Cape of Good Hope, the 27th of March 1759 From Cape of Good Hope, the 27th of March 1759 to be, concerning which, having consequently consulted with attention and taken into consideration that the minor disadvantage which the Company might suffer through the vessel Scholtenburg remaining here locally until next year, if such should indeed have to happen, cannot outweigh the danger that might be run of losing the entire cargo of the aforementioned vessel the Naarstigheid through one of the aforesaid accidents; whereupon we have judged it best and accordingly resolved to make use of the present favorable opportunity, and to allow the mentioned ship Scholtenburg to depart for Rio de la Goa to collect the cargo of the Naarstigheid as soon as it shall have been discharged of the goods laden therein both for this Government and for Your Right Honorable Headquarters; and that therefore the goods laden therein for Batavia just mentioned, along with the recognition goods of the crew, item the military personnel of the aforesaid vessel Scholtenburg and as many sailors as could be spared therefrom, should be transferred thither with the bearer of this, as well as the succeeding ship Vlissingen, as far as such could be done. While, with regard to the 48 chests of specie likewise shipped in the first-mentioned keel, it being considered by us that since one is prevented therein by all sorts of other arising hindrances, it will accordingly still take some time before the present provision ship Het Slot van Capelle can be dismissed from here; and that besides this it is very apparent that a more than ordinary number of money chests will be found on the expected ships Kronenburg, De Vrouwe Geertruijda, and Vrouwe Petronella Maria destined for China, without any other ships from the fatherland being expected here for the time being, we have therefore deemed it most advisable that of the aforesaid specie from Scholtenburg, 10 chests should be shipped on the vessel Noord Beveland, then already lying ready to sail, and the remaining 38 pieces placed on the bearer of this, as well as on the ship Vlissingen which is to follow, namely 19 chests on each, and that these should likewise be forwarded in that manner to Your Right Honorable Headquarters. While of the crew of the aforementioned ship Scholtenburg, there have been placed on this vessel: 85 military personnel, 3 artisans, and 15 sailors, as the muster rolls formed of this and annexed hereto further demonstrate. Furthermore, on the dates below, the following Honorable Company ships arrived safely at this roadstead, namely: Taking moreover the liberty, according to duty, to advise Your Right Honorable that of the French squadron that had still tarried here, the ships Le Duc d'Orleans, Le Vengeur, and La Baleine, on the 4th of this current month 25 March Velsen with 3 dead and 2 sick, which put out to sea from the Strait of Sunda on the 23rd of January of this year. The Princes Sophia Albertina Swedish ship mounted with 26 guns, 135 souls, being under the command of the Captains Scherman and Baltzer Grubbe, departed on the 15 of the aforesaid month of January from Canton in China. Which vessel, having become separated from Luxemburg on the 27th of January last, furthermore suffered some damage to its spars during the voyage; wherefore the necessary haste is already being made with the manufacture of others in their place, in order to be able to let the aforesaid vessel proceed on its voyage in the company of the other return ships present here, in the hope that its just-mentioned companion Luxemburg, as well as the still missing Ceylon ship Voorland, may also arrive safely at this place in a short time. 89 From Cape of Good Hope, the 7th of April 1759 From Cape of Good Hope, the 7th of April 1759 dated the 7th of the aforementioned month of March, whereby they report that since the departure of their previous letter addressed to us, only one person of their crew having died, the rest of the people were all still found to be in good health, but that they had not yet received any news of the boat sent by them to Mosambique, and for that reason feared that it might have been lost, the more so because they had learned from the Captain of an English snow that had been at Rio de La goa, that shortly before his departure from Goa he had spoken with some Mozambicans who had departed from there in October or November, without their having related anything of the aforesaid boat. Furthermore, pursuant to our instructions, the aforementioned authorities of the Naarstigheijd have also sent hither with the said hooker from the cargo of that keel 7 bales of silk 46 packs and 12 cases of linens 5 casks of shellac 14360 lb pepper. All of which aforesaid linens and silk became wet and damaged on board ship. As Your Right Honourable Excellencies will be able to inspect more closely at your pleasure from the accompanying copy of the aforesaid letter, on which account we take the liberty to refer thereto. Between the Captain Lieutenant of this ship lying ready to sail, the Vrouwe Geertruijda, Christiaan Hagerop, and the chief surgeon who came out with it, Carel Schultz, great quarrel and discord having arisen during the voyage hither, and complaints having been lodged here by the latter both regarding various mistreatments said to have been inflicted upon him by the aforesaid Captain Lieutenant, as well as on account of unlawful proceedings held against him on board ship, we, because due to the shortness of time this matter could not be determined before the Council of Justice here, have therefore had to decide to leave it to the said chief surgeon Schultz to seek his justice at Batavia. Furthermore, on the 10th of this month, there appeared here the English ship The Ilchester, commanded by Captain James Ward, mounted with 26 pieces of cannon and 100 men, which vessel, having departed from the Ganges on the 9th of January last, lost all its masts and further rigging in a severe storm on the 21st of February thereafter at the South Latitude of 20 degrees and longitude of 60 degrees. In addition to this, the officers of De Naarstigheijd were also ordered by us by letter that, upon the appearance at Rio de Lagoa aforesaid of the mentioned two vessels sent from here, they shall not only have to transship all the aforesaid remaining goods from the cargo of their disabled vessel into Scholtenburg, but moreover also have discharged, both into that vessel and into the hooker Hector, everything of the equipment of De Naarstigheijd that might still be in any way usable; as well as, after carrying out both tasks, to set fire to the remaining hull of the ship, as it remains fit for nothing more, in order to be able to salvage as much as possible of the iron coming from it, just as your Right Honorable Worships may be pleased to observe in more detail from the copy of the aforesaid letter accompanying this. From Cabo De Goede Hoop, the 15 meij 1759, we have therefore, with the aforementioned vessel Scholtenburg, conveyed thither free of transport and board four inhabitants from the distant district Swellendam, named Matthijs Scheffer, Hans Deedlof, Jan Jacob Cok, and Christiaan Fredrik Weesel, who were willing to be employed for the shooting of elephants on behalf of the Honorable Company. Wherefore the said persons were not only provided with the necessary gunpowder and lead on the Company's behalf free of charge, but were in addition also granted half of the tusks which they shall obtain in the aforesaid manner; subject, however, to the conditions that they must deliver the aforesaid tusks of their share to the Honorable Company at the ordinary prices established for them, and also that the aforementioned animals may not be shot without the full consent of the native population there, in order that one might not get into any difficulties with them on this account. In such a manner we now hope that this may be followed by good success, and thus some profit may also be obtained for the Honorable Company. Ordinary rations likewise amount this year to less than the preceding, resulting from the lesser board money disbursed from the Company's treasury. Ordinary expenses, on the other hand, amount to more than the year 1756/7, firstly through the making of 1400 canvas bags for the dispensary in place of those that were lost with the small ship Schuylenburg, the gunpowder expended at the arrival, presentation, and departure of the Honorable Commissioner Johan Gideon Loten, and for the exercising of the artillerymen, as well as on account of garden seeds and various garden tools arriving from the Motherland of this account compared to that of the year 1756/7 arises, firstly, through what was furnished to the Honorable Commissioner for the household expenses of his Honor's table; secondly, on account of the maintenance of the two Reverend banished Ceylonese; and thirdly, through the set premiums for various recaptured Company slaves who had deserted: ƒ 1244. 9. 8 Carpentry and repair: the lesser amount of this account arises chiefly from the fact that, apart from a guardhouse at the newly constructed battery on the Salt River, no new timber structures of importance were made, and the repairs that were unavoidably necessary to the jetty, the water conduit, as well as the grain magazines, mills, hospital, horse stable, item the dwellings in the Castle, also amounted to less than the repairs which in the previous financial year had to be made to various other Company buildings amounted to . . . . . ƒ 4084. 4. 8 Extraordinary expenses: the greater yield Ships' wages sum up this year to less than the past year, because in the previous year Good Months were issued to the crew of 5 ships, and by contrast in this financial year only to one ship. 117 From Cape of Good Hope, 15 May 1759 From Cape of Good Hope, 15 May 1759 As it further appears from the aforesaid Trade Books that the net profits and the country's revenues have amounted to the following, namely: Anno 1756/7 ƒ159483: 18: 8 Anno 1757/8 ƒ156845: 4: — and thus ƒ 2638: 14: 8 less than in the past financial year, which small lesser amount was solely caused by the fewer advances that were obtained by the shopkeeper owing to fewer good months being granted, as well as by the lesser profits that were made on the sold merchandise.
