Our proposal to mutually communicate to each other, vice versa, the selling prices of sugar and Japanese copper between Souratta and Mallabaar, and to order the Cochin ministers absolutely not to sell either of these for less than in this Directorate, was fundamentally based on the interest of the Company, according to the understanding we had formed of it, which we very gladly leave to its own merits or demerits; but by no means on an idea that Your High Mightinesses had cause for displeasure regarding the conduct of the Mallabaar ministry, nor on an intention to convey anything resembling such a sentiment; so that it has surprised as much as pained us to see that this seems more or less to have been understood or taken in that manner. And whereas Your High Mightinesses, taking the proposed order into consideration, have been pleased to grant the former, provided this can be done at little expense, we have resolved not to dispatch express messengers for that purpose, unless some rise in the market is perceived, but otherwise, or when the prices remain on the same footing or fall, to wait until an inexpensive opportunity by sea presents itself. Your High Mightinesses' order regarding the weights will be strictly executed immediately after the delivery of the cargo from Lekkerland and Cattendijk, which cannot wait for it, as the weights that were sent were not yet ashore on the day the business was conducted, and a portion of the cargo of both ships had already been received. As far as we have been able to ascertain thus far, the statement of the English regarding the arrival of powdered sugar from the Philipinus at Bombaij has not been exaggerated; yet because we have this only from their own accounts and reports from natives, we cannot vouch for it positively. It is certainly a point that merits our attention, and it has contributed much to the slight sales or off-take of the Company's sugar. Concerning the ƒ1640: 16. — disbursed to the moedi under caution of restitution, as appears from our respectful letter of the 12th of March 1759, we have resolved to have him pay this back into the Company's treasury, or to deduct it from the first itemized account to be submitted by him, by which that man will be punished as severely as the nature of the matter, to our understanding, can at all allow. From Surat, 9 April 1760. would have been the most immediate person to possess knowledge of the sound quality of that building, but on the other hand it seems very harsh to hold a commander, who certainly will not have known any better than that everything was made solid and strong, responsible for such hidden defects as have only revealed themselves in the course of time, besides the fact that no funds or goods of that gentleman remain here under his proxies or, to our knowledge, under others, and consequently no one knows from whom else it could be recovered than from the modi himself, to which end, given the obstinacy of the natives, especially when it comes to returning monies once enjoyed, one would have to employ coercive measures that might occasionally have bad consequences here, particularly under the present constitution of times and affairs, without producing the intended effect, since that servant, in order to escape such restitution, which one could hardly explain to him or others as being just and equitable, might place himself under English protection, and thus frustrate all our efforts, as well as plunge this administration, if it nevertheless wished to pursue him, into great disputes with his new protectors, on which account we appear, for the present, to be able to do nothing else in this remaining matter than humbly to request Your High Nobilities to be pleased to decide yourselves upon whom the ordered further compensation properly falls, and in case it be the modi, what means might best be employed to achieve the intended goal. To the former first commissioner at Danda Rajapour, Sanderus, we shall, in accordance with Your High Nobilities' esteemed authorization, cause to be paid such f 1141. 10.- as is due to him on account of an extorted gift to Managie Angria, for which he expresses his gratitude, as well as for his exemption from the levy on account of the bezoar stones traded for Japan in the year 1749, 149. On the cloves brought in the year 1757 with the ship Kievitsheuvel, no more was found short and confirmed under oath than 69 lb. or 5/8 per hundred, instead of 5 3/8 percent, so that a clerical error must have been made in our letter or copy of the resolution, which was overlooked during collation. The departure of the outgoing Director with the ship Leckerland, owing to the late arrival of both follow-up ships, not being able to take place before the middle, or perhaps only between the middle and the end of this month, although the general transfer of the Directorate and the specific transfers of the Chief Administrator, trade warehouses, and provisions are to take place under the date of the last of March, it is not very probable that he will anywhere along the way encounter any foreign vessels.

The incoming Commander Jan Drabbe, the designated Second and Chief Administrator David Kellij, and the other servants favored with promotion by Your High Excellencies, except for the designated Purser Engelkrans, who as stated before has passed away, express to Your High Excellencies their due gratitude for their appointments, as does the Cashier and Invoice-keeper Jan Oudenhoorn for his confirmation in that post, and likewise for their obtained relief, the outgoing Warehouse Master Jan Anthonij Sweers de Landas, the outgoing Purser Anthoon Siegfried Gotthold Guse, and the Assistant Louis Gerardus Bottendorff; as well as the Junior Merchant Hendrik Kronenberg for Your High Excellencies conditional permission to draw his salary. The notice on the trade ledgers of this Directorate for the year 1756/7, and the report received alongside it from the committee members appointed to the examination of the Surat expense accounts of some ships, we have the honor to present to Your High Excellencies here annexed, duly answered in the margin, accompanied by a report from the elected Commander Drabbe, as outgoing Chief Administrator, regarding the first-mentioned document and the entries that were recently debited and credited to this Directorate by invoice; likewise a written justification from the outgoing Purser Gude concerning the tenor of the said report from the committee examiners, with some extracts from our Resolutions cited therein; and we take the liberty to refer thereto with a humble request for favorable consideration and disposition, in order not to rehash such a tedious subject in this letter, 153. From Surat, 9 April 1760. to have bought for the account and by the order of his master, who was therefore obliged to provide him with the necessary funds to satisfy his debt, regarding which he would not be in default, but that being unable to obtain any money from him, he was ready to return the purchased muskets; finally, on 4 September following, it was decided—in consideration that Sidi Ahmetchan did not disavow the actions of Sidi Moriaan, but furthermore, as he had already been addressed more than once regarding the payment without any success, and that in all likelihood money was as little to be obtained from him as from the buyer except by means of execution, for which one would have to request the assistance of the English; yet to which, having heard indirectly, they, being prejudiced with the notion that the aforesaid auction of firearms was held precisely at the time when they knew their expedition to be at hand, in order thus to enable their enemies to resist them better in a manner against which no objection could be raised, would not be at all disposed to lend a hand—to take back the aforesaid muskets. But to prevent the consequences that others might wish to draw from this in due course, so as to be satisfied on a later occasion likewise with the return of what was bought whenever they might think they had spent too much for it or otherwise suffered buyer's remorse, the said Sidi Morjaan is to be given to understand that, since no such excuses can be accepted by the Company, but what is once sold and delivered remains sold, the Secunde, out of consideration for him and his present insolvency, was willing to take back the muskets bought by him, and also to decree once and for all that His Honour, as vendue master of the Company's auctions, shall in future not be allowed to give credit to any servants of Regents except at his own peril. Pursuant to this resolution, the aforesaid firearms, which had been received back very rusty and had first to be cleaned again, were auctioned again on 29 October last, and were sold at an advance of 5 3/4 per cent rough calculation, being 37 1/4 per cent less than they had originally fetched, as shown by the following yield: 32. From Surat, 9 April 1760. To make public, with the recommendation to take this and our opinion as guidance, that it would be better to sell the sugar somewhat lower and demand cash upon delivery. Furthermore, regarding the 100 canassers of powder sugar, which they jointly bought in March 1759, and for which they are consequently jointly and severally liable, half of the remainder is in arrears, or f5850:2. The said Telliksjent, who, as far as we can ascertain, is well able to pay, maintains that he can make do with satisfying only his received half, moreover refusing, or from time to time putting off, the liquidation of his outstanding account with the said Gevendas Doosje and Mitalaal. He was protected by the Maratha toll-collector, and consequently people have tried in vain, with both good and harsh measures, to bring him to reason, and his former associates have neither money nor credit, so that this debt appears to us to be utterly dubious. The letters exchanged on this subject to date have followed in the annexes of the first-undersigned's memorandum, and we do not doubt that Your High Noble Lordships, upon review thereof, will find that we have made every possible effort, and continue to do so, for its collection, just as the factors, as far as we can ascertain, have also not been remiss in that regard, whereby, having ended up in the utmost embarrassment, they seem to resort to false claims in order to gain time, pretending that there are several servants of the Company who had goods made and sent from Amed Abaad, and also brought goods from Surat, for which they allegedly advanced the toll without being able to recover the same. However, on 27 March last, we decided to have this accurately investigated by the servants while the departing second-in-command is still present in Amed Abaad, as was circumstantially prescribed in our letter of the 29th, in order further to dispose thereof according to the findings of the matter. Having already reminded the servants by letters of 28 July 1759 that they were not to give further credit to the same or other merchants unless they were willing, if necessary, to stand surety for them, but rather to vend the goods in small parcels and let them go for somewhat less so as to be paid upon collection. Regarding the Chelasses with red grounds and white and blue checks, demanded for the first time by the Homeland Demand for the year 1759 dated Amsterdam the 22nd of October of the year 1757, and the Fotasses made known by the Batavian Demand of the 1st of August 1758, the contracting of which we had postponed until the 2nd of April 1759, which arrived on the 29th of the following month, were inspected by us, and as the demanded prices of 900:—:— guilders for the bale of these Chelasses No. 21 and 720:—:— guilders for the bale of Fotasses could not be bargained down, we contracted for the demanded quantities of both on that day, under conditions that [illegible] and that the Fotasses must contain the full length of 5 and width of 1 3/6 @. On the same day, at the request of the Souratta suppliers who had the procurement in the year 1758 of the white broad whole baftas that were allocated to Brootchia in the year 1759, that seven bales which had arrived too late might still be accepted, it was also agreed to on the new requisition and at the lower price for which they were contracted at Brootchia, and consequently the factors were written to, instructing them to pay that much less for them.
