The 11th October The 11 October Report concerning the success of the Kutch expedition more than a month ago that I gave the same to Sicie Jaffer Caabchan for preparation, then you certainly must not have been with that gentleman during that time; that is indeed so, replied Mantchergie. Having said this, the Nawab addressed us and requested that we should assure Your Honorable Worship of his true friendship, adding thereto: please reassure the Director on my behalf that I regard the Honorable Company's interests as my own, that I have always been a friend of the Dutch and shall also remain so, and that there is no greater joy for me than when I am able to contribute something to Your Honorable Worship's satisfaction. After having sat for a little while longer and conversed on indifferent matters, we obtained our dismissal. This being that which occurred during our commission, and having the honor to bring it to the knowledge of Your Honorable Worship, we are nevertheless obliged to add hereto that when we departed from the Durbar, the well-known dispenser Wellie ula followed behind us, and then in our presence declared to the Honorable Company's brokers that the license letter for the construction of the claimed shelter, without knowing whether it would be a wall or made of planks and beams, was to be brought today or tomorrow to Your Honorable Worship. Herewith we have the honor to be with complete esteem and deep respect, was signed beneath, Honorable Worshipful Sir, lower, Your Honorable Worship's obedient and faithful servants, was signed, Is Sanderus and Hk Kroonenberg, in the margin, Surat the 22nd September Anno 1754. Whereas also the expedition mentioned in the secret resolutions of the 24th and 30 January as well as 16th February, and resolved upon on the 18th August all last past, for the indemnification of the Company on account of what occurred in the kingdom of Kutch, has reached its full conclusion, the hooker the Jonge Iacob having returned on the 2nd of this month from the voyage made thither, thus the papers submitted by the Committee Members Falck and Blaaukamer who were on the voyage, concerning this matter, were laid on the table by the Director, consisting firstly of the following report. To the Right Honorable Worshipful Sir, Extraordinary Councilor of the Dutch Indies, As well as Director and Chief Commander of this Directorate. Honorable Worshipful Sir, Esteemed Councilors. The daily journal kept by us on the expedition to Kutch and appended hereto contains in detail everything we could say concerning it, wherefore, with Your Honorable Worships' permission, we take the liberty to refer thereto, and in this only to state that upon drawing up the expenses of the expedition we found them to amount to f 22810: 1: -, or f 20054: 13: if we subtract the pay of the Europeans and permanently employed natives, as well as the ordinary board money of the former and the provisions of the latter, so that the Company according to this last calculation would profit f 2431: 2 solely on the brought Spanish reals, ducats, and rupees, which together make f 22485: 15: -, although if one does not deduct the aforementioned items they would be f 324: 6 short, which will probably be made up from some goods that we

573. The 11th of October The 11th of October Presentation of the incurred expenses and seized effects and traversed goods to be profited from brought along, and thus the Company is amply indemnified. The statement and comparison of the expenses against the booty we have the honor herewith to offer to Your Honorable Worships, as well as a declaration which we have taken for our reassurance from the Chief Mate Arij Fransz: and the Second Mate Pieter Nieuwenhuyzen regarding what has been seized. The second signatory requests pardon for the liberty he takes on this occasion to remind Your Honorable Worships of the resolution taken by Your Honorable Worships in regard to a small gift delivered to the Hereditary Prince of Kets. Of which he had the honor to offer the specification amounting to f 260:13 in- and f 338:15 purchase price to Your Honorable Worships along with his letter of the 8th of September Anno 1756, namely that the Company could not satisfy that amount until it had been indemnified regarding the goods robbed at Mondra, and since this has now taken place, he takes the liberty to request Your Honorable Worships that he may benefit from the contents of the said resolution. We have the honor to be with humility and respect, Underneath stood: Honorable Worshipful Sir and Esteemed Councilors, Your Honorable Worships' very obedient and humble servants. With an annexed distinct presentation of the incurred expenses etc. and seized effects, from which it appears that the former, along with the Company's claim, amount to f 22810:1:—, and the latter in pure cash to f 22485:15:—, so that for the complete satisfaction of the Company there would still be lacking f 324:6:—; which they believe will easily be realized from 6 pieces of small pearls and some other goods brought along, it being also demonstrated therein that under the expenses are also included the wages and ordinary board money of all European servants employed in that expedition, item one month's pay of the permanently employed native seamen, as also one month's provisions for the same, amounting together to f 1696:18:—, and that this sum, along with the difference between the selling and purchase cost of the gifts, amounting to f 1058:10:—, being deducted from the first-mentioned sum, the Company, besides the taken goods, would have left over on the cash alone f 2431:2:—. f 324:6 The 11th of October What the same consist of Draft Gentile letter Merchants at Mandur robbed Daily register of the execution of the commission To satisfy the Junior Merchant Blaankamer f 337:9 The conduct of the commissioners approved Furthermore, at the requisition of the aforesaid Commissioners, under presentation of an oath, a declaration made by the Chief Mate and Commander Arij Fransz: and the Second Mate Pieter Nieuwenhuyzen regarding the effects found in a horrij seized at the Manduise roadstead, consisting, besides 40 packs and bales of various sizes, in some bags and bundles with gold and silver money, which upon opening and recounting were found to contain: 5727 3/4 Spanish Reals, or properly Cross Dollars, 827 Gold Ducats, 227 Silver Rupees, and 6 pieces of small pearls. All of which were properly secured by the Commissioners and, along with the taken packs and bales, brought here and accounted for. As also a draft Gentile letter written by the repeatedly mentioned Commissioners to the Governor and the principal merchants of Manduy, in answer to a letter sent to them concerning the taking of the aforesaid horry and the firing upon other vessels; And finally a Daily Register of what occurred on the occasion of the execution of the commission, beginning with the 7th of September when the Commissioners left the Surat roadstead and ending with the 30th ditto. Thereafter was summarized the statement of the short-weights in the past fiscal year 1755/9. All which papers having been attentively summarized, it was resolved to approve the conduct held by the Commissioners in this matter, and regarding the request made by the Junior Merchant Blaankamer in the report inserted above, it was approved to let him enjoy from the cash treasury, in accordance with the resolution of the session of the 6th of October 1756, the amount of the specification sent over at that time, amounting to f 260:13:— cost price and according to findings here f 337:9:— selling price, on account of a gift delivered to the Hereditary Prince of Kiets, which on that day was left to his account, since the clause to which the passing of that specification was suspended, namely the indemnification of the Company regarding the goods robbed at Mondra, has reached its conclusion with the taking of reprisal. Due to the decease of the Junior Merchant and Cashier Rutgerus van Ebbenhorst, one of the Commissioners of Marital Affairs, and there being also a vacancy for a Fire Engine Master at the Wharf, it was thought fit to proceed with filling those posts, and consequently to appoint the Junior Merchant Daniel Burnat as Co-Commissioner of Marital Affairs, and the Militia Lieutenant Harmen Amesbeek, presently residing at the Wharf, as Fire Engine Master there; and furthermore, to fill the post of Fire Engine Master in the Lodge, which becomes vacant by the transfer of the latter, with the Junior Merchant and Cashier Ian Oudenhoorn. Absent: the Junior Merchant and Pay-Accountant Philip Wargaren, due to indisposition. Tuesday, the 23rd of October Anno 1759. The Raja of Cutch, having addressed a letter to the Director on the occasion of the expedition completed in the Gulf of Cutch during the past month—which was dealt with more extensively in the Resolution of the 11th of this month—in order to complain of such violence committed against him and his subjects; His Honour communicated to the meeting the translation thereof as entered in the Daily Register of this Office under the 6th of this month. And whereas that prince expresses himself therein as if the greatest injustice in the world had been done to him, and the rupture of the former friendship was to be blamed on the Dutch, and in particular on the Director; and it was therefore deemed necessary by His Honour to convince that proud and fickle Raja of the contrary; His Honour also submitted a draft reply to the aforesaid letter. These papers, as well as a translated missive written by the said Raja to the Company's second broker Munchergie Gorsudjie on the same subject and communicated by that official to the Director—wherein that prince, after having poured out many groundless complaints, so to speak requests the broker's mediation or interposition to settle the differences that have arisen—having been read, together with the reply thereto drafted by the Director to be sent, after being translated, by the said broker to His Highness, the members collectively concurred with the contents of the replies drafted by the Director; and it was resolved to have the same translated immediately into Persian as aforesaid and dispatched. Finally, it being further communicated to the meeting by the Director that the said Raja had also written a letter on that same matter to the English Chief as well as to the City Governor, the latter of whom had communicated his letter to His Honour, with the offer to reply thereto in such manner as His Honour might see fit; but that His Honour had deemed it best to inform that ruler, by means of an account delivered through his Master of Requests who had been the bearer, of the true state of affairs, without requesting reflection thereon or expressing himself in any way regarding the manner in which one would wish His Honour to frame his reply, so that it should not appear as though his intercession or mediation were deemed necessary; after the reading of that letter, as likewise incorporated in the Daily Register, it was resolved to concur also with this action of the Director. Right Honorable Commanding Lord, Pursuant to Your Right Honorable's highly esteemed verbal order, the undersigned, as specially appointed commissioners, betook themselves to the Captain-Lieutenant at sea and Equipment Master of this Directorate, Ian Warnar Falck, and witnessed him destroy by fire the wood of two wheels for twelve-pounder gun carriages, as well as five axles of two-pounder gun carriages, and two wooden coopers' compasses, all in accordance with the resolute decision taken in the Council of Policy upon the report submitted by the Honorable Chief Administrator regarding the inventory taken at the end of August of the past year, submitted at the session of the 3rd of March last. In the hope that this commission of ours has been carried out in accordance with Your Right Honorable's intention, we have the honor to subscribe ourselves with the utmost veneration. 632 633 The 2nd of November The 2nd of November [illegible] as can be seen at large in the resolution of 15 February of the same year, and that on that day, upon a report submitted concerning this by the Honorable Head Administrator, it was resolved to write off the aforesaid sum of ƒ 3206: 17: 8 to prior year's profit and loss, since it [illegible] to request a refund of the excess received by each of the interested parties pro rata of his share, against a copy of the receipt roll kept at the Trade Office here; that consequently this matter was also reported to the High Indian Government by respectful letter from this Ministry under date of 15 April A:o Pass:o, but that the deceased Merchant Rutgerus van Ebbenhorst, as the then invoice keeper, neglected the calculation, notwithstanding the verbal and repeated recommendation of the Director to do the same without fail at the first opportunity, and the noting down of the aforesaid resolution kept by himself during the meeting on his Honor's orders, and that this neglect was subsequently only discovered upon receipt of Their High Honors' revered general rescription of 10 October of the past year, so that the calculation and sending of the aforesaid document could only take effect in the month of December last; and finally, that from all the above it clearly appears that the aforesaid neglect can be imputed to no one besides the then invoice keeper, except only to the Honorable Head Administrator Drabbe, insofar as his Honor, being Head of the Trade Office and signing the invoices, might also be judged responsible for that neglect; regarding which opinions were divided, but the majority maintained that, the necessary orders having been given to the invoice keeper, as was done by the Director in the presence of us all, a Head Administrator cannot prevent, nor is he obliged to answer for, such a servant throwing the same to the wind 311 631 635 The 2nd of November The 2nd of November or neglecting them, and that it could happen to the most accurate man in the world that, when checking an invoice before signing it, he did not observe that a resolved and ordered charge had not been made therein; although others were of the opinion that the Honorable Secunde could easily, and certainly ought to, note such extraordinary entries that were to be included in the invoices, in order, when the invoices were presented to him for signature, not to forget to see whether the orders given regarding them had been properly executed; since someone who signs a paper that another has drawn up is notoriously not only more or less responsible for the content, but also for whatever might have been neglected or omitted therein, so that, in their view, it did not seem entirely proper that his Honor should be relieved and formally acquitted of all compensation in this matter, but that at least this matter presented itself in such terms that it seemed somewhat beyond the scope of a subordinate Ministry to decide this finally, the more so since one has no clear orders applicable to the case in point, nor decisive precedents upon which one could rely.
