410 641 The 2nd November The 2nd November it was very fine weather and a gentle breeze, and also that several other ships did likewise, whereupon the boat sailed from the ship with 4 sailors, but charged with strict orders absolutely not to sail out of hail, let alone out of sight of us. Seeing, however, that as soon as he had made sail, he moved as far away from our vessel toward the Javanese shore as the eye could reach, where it tacked along the coast just as we also did back and forth with the ships until the evening, although we had made little progress due to the calm and variable winds. A little after sunset, all came to anchor upon the signal of the pennant-bearer, seeing then that the boat near the shore also cast grapnel, in no way doubting that when the ships set sail again the said boat would follow as well. We nevertheless kept a large light burning at the stern the entire night in case the boat might try to reach the ship in the night so as not to miss it, but all in vain. The next day, when we set sail again with a gentle breeze, fair weather, and a hazy sky, we presumed that he was sailing behind us, which, upon closer inspection through the spyglass, was indeed found to be so; and since we had only a light air and made little headway, no doubt was entertained that he would easily overtake us by rowing and sailing. Thus, having again lain the entire night with a fire at the stern, and in the morning of the 21st of the same month still hearing nothing, we weighed anchor and set sail so as not to leave the fleet, and also because time was running very short to sail west of the Maldives to Souratta, so that we had to leave the boat with 4 sailors behind and do without it, without being able to give the slightest reason how and by what accident its absence was caused; but we well know that the boat was sent from the ship for no other reason than has already been mentioned, and that this was done solely to have less drag behind the ship in order the better to further its progress. A Parsi named Bommertje Dansgie having offered to buy all the Company's arrack already brought in as well as that still expected with the following ships, and having offered ƒ 200:—:— for each leaguer, the Director informed the meeting thereof, and at the same time put it to the vote whether one should let the beverage go for that price; and whereas the aforesaid bid appeared very advantageous to the assembled members, as yielding an advance of 79 1/8 percent, or 15 3/4 percent or ƒ 45:—:— per leaguer more than in the past year, it was unanimously resolved to conclude the contract with the said Parsi on the aforesaid terms. All that is written above we are willing at all times, if required, to confirm under oath. Underneath stood: Thus done aboard the Honorable Company's ship 't Hof Duno, the 24th of August 1759. The 12th of November. Remark concerning the Director's conduct. The Director, having repaired for that purpose with most of the Council Members on the 10th of this month to the English Lodge, was entertained there very politely and friendly, except that the host, in the evening as well as at noon at table, had taken the precedence or first seat, with the addition that, having been in doubt at noon whether this had not occurred in accordance with the English custom that the host always presides at the table, without discerning that the same cannot consequently be extended to solemn occasions, places, and persons, regarding which it has never been in use before, His Honour, in order to cause no commotion on this solemn occasion, had not immediately shown resentment thereat, just as he had also not done in the evening, since he had not yet been able to convince himself of the contrary, seeing that the company having gone to make an excursion to Caterkam in the afternoon, Mr. Spencer had not resisted giving His Honour the precedence or highest seat in the coach; but that His Honour, still remaining in uncertainty as to how the matter truly stood, believed he owed it to the honour of his Nation and to the Character with which he is invested not to let this pass entirely unnoticed, so as not to appear willing to sacrifice his duty to the maintenance of the currently prevailing friendship between the two Lodges, and that His Honour was therefore of the opinion that he ought openly to retaliate this unexpected treatment upon Mr. Spencer, and repay him in kind upon occasion, unless the Council were of the same opinion as His Honour that it would be better, in order to prevent great éclat and estrangement, to inform Mr. Spencer in private of the reasons why one could not dispense with treating His Honour in the exact same manner. And whereas this incident was noted with astonishment by most of the members, since no one could have expected such from the usual politeness of Mr. Spencer, and therefore some of the Members also still doubted whether it was indeed to be attributed to a premeditated design to give himself or his Nation an air of superiority in public, the Members unanimously conformed to the sentiment of His Honour, and resolved to have a record made thereof in these minutes. Thereafter, the Lord Director produced a Draft reply to an English Letter of the 9th of this month, the translation of which is to be seen in the Translation Book, just as the aforesaid reply has been entered in the proper place among the outgoing Letters, all members individually having conformed to its contents. Furthermore, His Honour communicated that, having appointed special Commissioners to inspect, in the presence of the Fiscal, the Gunpowder brought by the ships Het Hof van Uno and De Waakzaamheid, and to test whether it was of the required quality, these persons had served a Report regarding their findings, reading in this manner: To the Right Honourable Sir, Louis Taillefert, Extraordinary Councillor of Netherlands India, as well as Director of this Directorate. Right Honourable Sir, Pursuant to Your Right Honourable's orders, we have inspected the powder brought by the ships De Waakzaamheid and Het Hof van Uno, and found as follows, to wit: From De Waakzaamheid: 23 barrels tainted and damp, and 37 ditto wet, spoiled, and unusable. From Het Hof van Uno: 24 barrels damp, and 56 ditto dry and good. Wherewith, hoping to have complied with Your Right Honourable's intention, we subscribe ourselves with deep Respect, Right Honourable Sir, Your Right Honourable's humble and obedient Servants. That his Honour had thereupon ordered Equipagemeester Falck to call in a native master powder maker to deliberate whether the damaged and damp portion, as well as that which was reported as completely spoiled in the humble lodge, could not be restored and made good again; but that the report made by the said official in this regard left little or no hope thereof, which document having been read was found to be of the following content: To the Right Honourable Louis Taillefert, Extraordinary Councillor of the Netherlands Indies. Right Honourable Sir, Pursuant to Your Honour's highly esteemed order, the undersigned has shown the native master powder maker the powder brought by the ships 't Hof d'Urk and De Waakzaamheid which is damp, as well as that which has been entirely wet; and he says that he can make the powder that is only slightly damp good again, provided that for 40 Ceer he will deliver back only 30 Ceer, and that which has been entirely wet he will deliver back only 20 Ceer for 40 Ceer, and that he should be paid ro/a 2½ per Maun, and that one must provide him with a suitable place on the shipyard to process the same so that he is not seen by the natives, for he dared not do it in view of the native government; and the undersigned knows of no place here on the shipyard where one could do that without great danger. Whereupon, after deliberation, it was resolved to dry the damp quantity here in the sun as best as possible, and to have the wet and spoiled portion dumped into the river by commissioners, in the presence of the Fiscal and the Skippers; as well as to send the dried portion, along with the empty barrels of that which was dumped, back to Batavia without charge, and to write off the costs to profit and loss subject to Their High Honours' approval, as having been caused by leakage of the ships without anyone's fault or doing, as appears from two attestations given under offer of oath by the ship's officers, which it was also thought fit to insert here. Furthermore, we found twenty-two barrels of powder damp, which however, by rubbing and airing, we restored so far that one could use the said powder. The Equipagemeester having also made known to the Lord Director that: We, all the undersigned, declare at the request of the Valiant Skipper Jan van Zee that on the above-mentioned date in the morning during the forenoon much water was found by the pump as well as between decks on the starboard side near the galley; we inspected the ship immediately and found in the gunner's room that the bulkhead had been stove in the previous night by the raging sea and so much water came through that with baling and continuous pumping we had our hands full, and we repaired the same immediately by caulking with oakum and sheet lead as best we could, whereby we found great relief; but on the 7th September we found powder in cartridges and 38 barrels lying under water in the powder room; we immediately chopped a hole in the bulkheads to release the water so that it could reach the pump; the same having been pumped dry, we found no more water at the pump than normal. Right Honourable Commanding Lord and Esteemed Councillors, The undersigned Fiscal, having been enjoined by Resolution of the 2nd of this month to hold an inquiry into how the delinquent Hendrik Silbij, an Englishman by birth, who was sentenced to death for repeated desertion and to whom death had already been announced, and who for that reason was kept without irons or bonds in the holding cell on the grounds of the undersigned's residence, escaped from there during the night between the 28th and 29th (when the undersigned was at the roadstead with the Commissioners) of this past month at around half past 1 o'clock; in order to perform his office and duty before the Court of Justice of this trading post against those who might be the cause thereof through the said neglect or otherwise, has the honour to report as follows: That the soldier William Poulder, known in the Company's books under the name of Willem Collens (see his declaration attached hereto under Letter A), testifies that at one o'clock at night he was brought on sentry duty before the prison, when the delinquent was lying on the ground there, but was awake; that he subsequently, as usual, walked up and down on his post before the door thereof, since some peons or native soldiers of the undersigned were keeping watch inside; that one of them, around half past 1 o'clock, having gone, as he thought, for a natural call of necessity to the place destined for that purpose around the corner of the said prison house, had immediately returned and informed him that the imprisoned Englishman had broken out, having managed to open a small door that opens next to the privy and thus to escape; as will further appear to your Right Honourable and Esteemed Honours from an attached written deposition under Letter B from the peon Hassenchan, stating that at around half past one o'clock, not because he had to fulfill a call of nature as the sentry maintains, but because he had heard a cracking noise as if a branch of a tree or something else was breaking, he, after having awakened his sleeping comrade to watch the prisoners in the meantime, had gone outside to the back of the prison to see what was going on; and coming back, he had found that a small door beside or around the corner of the prison stood half open, and having looked inside, saw that the delinquent who had been sitting there was no longer there; and he had immediately informed the above-mentioned Goulder thereof, who also immediately raised the alarm; upon which the sergeant on duty, Jan Frederik Erlich, together with Corporal Thomas Terbeek, as appears from their attestations granted under offer of oath and appended hereto marked Letters C and D, immediately arrived there and understood from the said Goulder that the delinquent had escaped; whereupon the said Sergeant personally went in all haste to the North-East Gate and sent Corporal Terbeek to the South-West Gate, but neither of them met or saw the said Silbij. In consequence thereof, the brokers were called in and the aforementioned prices were put to them once more, with an admonition to augment the price of the sugar a little so that the sale could be concluded; and upon their repeated declaration that, for the reasons cited above, they had offered the uttermost, they were, on the usual conditions of collection and payment of the spices and the Japanese copper before the end of October and of the other goods within that year, awarded the purchase as far as concerns the merchandise brought by the Hof d'Uno and the Waakzaamheid. We have the honor to report that we found the molding at the back of the waist completely decayed, and the seams beneath the molding completely open, which must necessarily be provided with a new molding and lead sheeting over the seams of the molding after the seams have been well caulked beforehand. Furthermore, we also found an opening on the port side between the seam of the stem and the bellows, which needs to be repaired by inserting a batten and nailing lead sheeting over it after it has first been caulked. We also found a leak at the cargo port, which will have to be broken open, and again provided with new lead sheeting and moldings. And in the waist, we found several planks against the ship's side completely rotted, which will have to be provided with new ones. Furthermore, the undersigned report, according to the chief mate of the said vessel, that since the 18th of this month they have had to pump four times in 24 hours, and that in the said 24 hours there was fully 65 to 70 inches of water at the pump, which continues to this day without being able to detect where the leak is coming from.
