762 763 The 31st of December The 31st of December amounts to as it actually is, so he submits the following, calculated at the purchase price, amounting to: Faithfully obedient and humble servant, was signed: [illegible] Surat, the 3rd [illegible] 179[illegible]. To debit the office of Amed-Abaad in the books in favor of the office of Brootchia for ƒ 3000:-:-, which the Brootchia factors omitted to charge to Amed-Abaad; as well as to credit the Cash Office at Brootchia by way of redress for ƒ 21:7:—, which is due to the latter office through an erroneous counting instead of a receipt from Cash of ƒ 10:13:8. Item, to credit the office of Brootchia here for ƒ :-7:8 on account of an equal ƒ -:7:8, which was brought up short by the Dispenser for shipping charges and drawn from Cash as charged to that residency. And finally, to pay from Cash what is due to the Fiscal on account of the native servants of Justice, up to the end of August last, to the debit of previous years' charges and expenses, and as far as this fiscal year is concerned, to the debit of the account of Condemnations and Confiscations. In order to see whether it would be more profitable for the Honorable Company to sell off by private contract all the wax recently brought from Batavia by the ships Hof Dano and the Waakzaamheid, or to have candles manufactured from part of that quantity, which are issued monthly as emoluments, the undersigned hereby briefly demonstrates the difference that appears between the present purchase of a maon of wax candles in comparison to a maon that was manufactured under his supervision according to special orders and verbal instructions from Your Right Honorable Sir. He therefore sets down the market price of a maon of wax candles, consisting of 36¼ lb, at ƒ 60:—:—. And after he has taken a maon of wax from stock, costing ƒ 21:17:—: 1. That a maon of that wax, which is very impure and, as the processors say, comes from Africa, gives a loss of around 9 1/16 pounds, or a quarter maon, which, calculated at the purchase price, amounts to ƒ 5:9:8. 2. That for making the wicks one necessarily needs 4 pieces of cotton, costing per quarter at ƒ 12:1:8 the maon: ƒ 1:4:8. 3. That for the purifying of the wax, consisting of repeated melting and bleaching, with which a month's time, more or less, is spent, and based on the exact amount required, one must pay ƒ 6:—:—. 4. Or lastly, that the manufacturing fee costs [illegible], thus the expenses on a maon amounting to ƒ 27:14:—, or a maon with all expenses: ƒ 43:11:—, giving a net profit of ƒ 16:9:—. Falck. 769 The 31st of December The 31st of December The junior merchants Sanderus and van der Heyden Simonsz granted a seat in Council: having in the meantime, according to their pledged word of honor, done everything in their power to collect those funds, though as yet without any success due to the ongoing siege, or rather blockade, of the Castle Cinciera by the Marathas; whether one ought at present to rest content with their endeavors made in that regard thus far, and grant them a seat in Council once again, without prejudice however to their remaining accountable and obligated for that debt and continuing to make their utmost efforts to obtain a prompt payment. Whereupon, it having been considered that this assembly at present consists of only 8 members; that the Director has already obtained his dismissal; that the merchant Sweers likewise awaits his relief to Batavia with the expected ships; and that consequently, of the present actual members, no more than 6 will remain, whereas the readmission of the 2 aforesaid members will complete the number again; and that moreover, under these present circumstances, good counsel is often needed, and the more members who are in actual function, the better it is: thus it was unanimously agreed to grant the said Sanderus and van der Heyden Simonsz their seat and vote in Council once again. In consequence of which resolution, the same were also called inside at the end of this session, and the above was presented to them by the Director, whereupon they also resumed their seats according to their rank. We do not understand that Your Honours can have so much astonishment over the conduct that we maintain, namely that we seize Your Honours' vessels and shoot at the same; had the botica which arrived today come to anchor near us, we would not have shot at it, but would have dealt with the same, the people aboard it, and its cargo in such manner as was done with the goods and people who fell into our hands yesterday. vessels, in case they might not yet have arrived, to enter the ports of Gorbander, a city and harbor at 21 degrees 37 minutes North latitude under the jurisdiction of the Rana, or Lupod bander, being the westernmost city and harbor of Kutch bordering on Sindy, in which case we would fall between two stools without being able to accomplish anything; whereas on the contrary, if we found something to our liking at the roadstead of Mandvi, we could provisionally seize it, so we resolved to sail thither, and if we found nothing there, and were asked the reason for our coming, to disguise the same under some plausible pretext or other. We therefore remained lying there that night on account of the ebb and sailed with the flood on Thursday the 20th of September toward Mandvi, where we anchored in the roadstead in the morning. We found two bombards lying there, one of which seemed to be empty, immediately set sail, and went deeper into the gulf, and the other, which was unloading, had a horry behind it. Whereupon it was answered by him that the aforementioned proposals made by him had primarily had as an objective to bring the Raja to more reasonable thoughts and fairer treatment toward the Company, but that this, with the formal abolition of the factory at Ketsmandui no longer taking place, some circumstances could easily have entered into it that required some alteration, that the matter remained principally executable and, barring impossibly foreseeable inconveniences of weather and wind, could hardly turn out otherwise than to the glory and advantage of the Company; so, since it also appeared so to the assembly, barring unforeseen adversities that cannot be counted on and by fear of which one cannot allow oneself to be held back without falling into formal inactivity, in order to comply with the honored intention of Their High Excellencies, it was unanimously approved to take the second project, contained in the letter of the factors of the 28th of January 1757, as it was judged much more practicable than the first, as the basis for the expedition, and it was left to the Director to direct the same and its execution as His Honor should deem proper; which took place during the meeting, and the details of His Honor's plan having been communicated to the members, it was understood, since the war hooker De Jonge Jacob could not well be spared on this occasion, this vessel, after the completed voyage, can apparently still properly be sent to Ceylon in the autumn to serve there according to the orders of the latest aforementioned formal rescript, to let the matter proceed in this spring.
