Latanairoa, who after a short reign was deposed, and in his place was elected Tanripala, named after his death Matinroa ri Tello, being a son of the slain King Laittja. He sent the deposed king into exile and during his reign lived in complete peace with the Macassars, and maintained a good fraternity with them, yet with this distinction in dignity, that the King of Boni indeed went to Goach on a visit to the Macassar, but the latter did not visit him. He died at Tello in Ao 1626, leaving a son named Dain Pabile, but he was born of too lowly a mother to be his successor. Therefore he had, with the approval of the Goach King, already before his death appointed as his successor his sister's son, Lamadarama, named after the birth of his son Pacokoa, Opaene Pacokoa, and after his death Matinroa-ri-Boekaka. He was married to a Wadjorese woman from Timoeroeng, whose father was Matour of Wadjo. By virtue thereof, Opoena Packoa was at the time of the first peelman King of that small district; his son Pacokoa was born of this Princess. For twelve years this king reigned peacefully. It is said of him that he was ambitious and power-hungry, stubborn, and a despiser of the country's customs; however, not courageous or stout-hearted, but nonetheless restless. Among other things, he meddled quite a bit in and concerning religion, to the displeasure of his nobles, among whom his mother Macalarooija was the greatest opponent. Being therefore pressed and unable to endure it any longer, she fled to Goac to the King, [illegible], who received her and her son and heir, granting him Patiro. Notwithstanding this, the King proceeded with his designs, attempting to force Wadjo and Soping by arms into his system, who then likewise sought help from the Macassar. The Macassar thereupon sent an embassy to Boni, but without effect, and therefore took up arms, with which, in Ao 1640, he defeated the Boniers repeatedly in Boni, up to three times, completely, with the result that the King fled and all of Boni submitted to the Macassar, under the concession of their laws and privileges, receiving as their regent the Bonier Taballa, or Aroe Pitoe Faucte, who governed the Boniers on behalf of the Macassar, while their King Lamadarama was banished to Siang. Shortly after this, Daleng Pabile and Aroe Coen, both Boni princes and relatives of the banished King, opposed this. They recruited people and attempted thereby to set Boni at liberty, but they were miserably beaten by the Macassars, who thereupon stripped Boni of all dignities, and in Ao 1643 reduced the entire country to slavery, except for Manipoe, because it had not involved itself in the last revolution. The subjugation and overthrow of Boni is said to have been caused by a lack of good leadership, since that country, before the great mortality throughout all Celebes from Ao 1636 to 1639, could furnish well over 70,000 able-bodied men, and in the war of 1643 still fielded 50,000 men who understood warfare better than the Macassars at that time. Meanwhile, slavery proved from the very start quite hard for the Buginese, and they greatly longed for an opportunity to restore themselves to freedom, for which their hope was already stirred when the Dutch, in Ao 1660, conquered Castle Panekokan, they being already then minded to unite with them, but the sudden peace prevented this. But shortly thereafter, provoked by the burden imposed upon them to cut Panekokan off from the mainland by a ditch, they all ran away, and arriving in their country, they chose as their chiefs and leaders Radja Palacca, Daleng Pabile, and Toballa, as well as Aroe Touaija, Aroe Marouwangij, Aroe Avo, etc., and girded on their weapons in the hope of thereby obtaining their freedom, receiving also help from Soping, so that their force, which they divided, was together estimated at circa 50,000 men. But the Macassars, supported by the Malays and Wadjorese, defeated the Buginese and Sopingers several times, in such manner that the entire

From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760. most of the chiefs fled the country in the best possible ways, and Aroe Caijo was captured, and the whole of Soping was likewise made subservient to the Maccassarese. Aroe Caijo was thereafter sent into exile to Sumbauwa, and only in the year 1669 was he released from there by Mr. Speelman. Meanwhile, the remaining Bonian and Soping princes arrived safely at Bouton, making an alliance with that king to live and die together as common enemies of the Maccassarese; notifying the King of Ternaten thereof through Aroe Apanna Ankee, who completely confirmed his agreement with them. From there, Aroe Patoosje, called Latomparina, also one of the Soping chiefs, wrote a letter to the Honorable Lords and made himself known as the head of the escaped Buginese, requesting the protection of the Honorable Company. Hereupon, in the year 1663, Commissioner Nieuwland, going to Ternaaten, was given a letter from the said Honorable Lords to this Patoosje, with orders that, if he were inclined to come to Batavia, the aforementioned Commissioner was to take him along on his return, which was accordingly carried out. Aroe Patoosje had dispatched this letter to the Honorable Lords without anyone's prior knowledge, and thus the other Buginese Princes looked on with wonder when Commissioner Nieuwland delivered him a letter from Batavia, since Radja Palacca was recognized as chief among these people, and they requested of the Commissioner that they might go along, which was indeed granted, but the King of Bouton opposed it. Meanwhile, Radja Palaca, alongside Patoosje, nevertheless dispatched Aroe Bijle to inform the Honorable Lords of the actual circumstances, and in that same year he also departed with his family for Batavia by way of the Ambon burgher Laurens Vos, who had put in at Bouton with his sloop, while Daleng Labile and Aroe Marouwangie departed with their families for Ternaten. In this manner, then, Radja Palacca came to Batavia, and between the time of his arrival and the war of the year 1666, he served as a soldier on Sumatra's West Coast, and subsequently sailed together with Admiral Speelman via Maccassar to Bouton, where they completely defeated the Maccassarese military forces. Not knowing what to do with the multitude of prisoners, a number of 5000 heads were placed on a certain island, most of whom, after the Admiral's departure, were ransomed for money by the people of Bouton. After this victory, and after the Admiral had put everything in good order, His Honor sailed with the Company's ships to Ternaten, leaving Captain-Lieutenant Steijger and Radja Palacca there with two ships, with orders to the latter to compel the rebellious Pantchiana with the Buginese and Sopingers who had come over, and likewise to clear that robbers' nest there, Tiboore, which was also accomplished. When the Maccassarese now learned with certainty the news of the destruction of their fleet, they restored the exiled King of Boni, Lamadaranna, to his kingdom and dignity, under acceptance of the old treaty without any exception. The Maccassarese showed this uncommon kindness to this King out of fear that the Buginese might otherwise choose Radja Palacca as their King and all flock to him. Radja Palacca, on the other hand, apprehensive that the King of Boni would become devoted to the interests of the Maccassarese because of this uncommon kindness, sent on his own authority a considerable force of Bonians and Sopingers to their lands, principally to entice their brethren to his side and to secure the country; but the King of Boni joined this force at once and attempted, all too rashly, to do damage to the Maccassarese, who, upon that rumor, took up arms again against Boni and drove them all out of the country, most of them fleeing to Loeboe, which took our side. Meanwhile, the Admiral arrived from Amboina at Bouton, and after attending to what was necessary, he concluded the well-known contract with Bouton, and the work being done, steered the entire force toward Maccassar.

95 From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760 From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760 which voyage Radja Palacca made through storms, and reached the bay of Boni, where at first he gained but little following; however, the arrival of Captain Poolman with 30 Europeans and two field guns, along with the letters of assurance, greatly increased his following, and even caused the Macassar regent to retreat from Boni. Thus, after a few days of advance, and his force having grown to 6000 heads, he marched from Boeleboele across the country of Boelecomba and Bonthain, without hindrance, advancing to near Laaija and Touratter, where finding the pass held by a substantial force under Caraleng Limques closed, he attempted to fight his way through, and indeed caused much damage to the enemies! But since much depended on joining with the Lord Admiral, our men seized the opportunity, and embarked their force in prahus, whereby they arrived safely before Gallissong on 14–17 August to join the fleet, having laid waste to or conquered the lands through which they had traveled. After which, warring against the Macassar with combined forces: our men had the good fortune that the Tourattians and those of Poelembangleng, who had been entrusted with a strong fortification, came over to us in October, and surrendered their strongholds to Radja Palacca, which contributed very greatly to the peace of Banaija concluded on 18 November 1667, whereby our fleet was then secured against the approaching westerly winds before Castle Rotterdam. How this Treaty of Bonaija was perfidiously broken, and thereby a second war with the Macassars arose, as well as how the same ended with the conquest of all Macassar, is briefly mentioned under the matters of that kingdom. In that state of affairs, the King of Boni, Lamadaramma, came forth again from Loeboe and remained in name King of Boni, but voluntarily handed over the command of the armed forces entirely to Radja Palacca, who departed for Batavia with the Lord Admiral along with several Macassar, Boni, and Soppeng princes, where he, Radja, was by Their High Excellencies Maccassar 16 with 9 97 From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760 From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760 Pakokoa whose mother, named Dastelaang, was a daughter of the Matoua of Wadjo Toale, who was descended from Wadjo, consequently Lapataoe and further Boni kings must demean themselves before Toenij Sombaija. invested with the kingdom of Bonthain feudally in his male line, together with a monthly grant of 200 rixdollars, and the domain of Boutualacq was designated as his residence. Having returned to Maccassar, he subjugated the lesser allies of the Macassars who still remained obstinate, first of all the region of Lamoeroe situated most eastward of Tanete, neighboring Soppeng, Mario, and Bengo, which peoples chose him, Palacca, as their hereditary King, which Their High Excellencies approved and ratified by a public act, and furthermore presented him with a gold chain and medal as a perpetual mark of honor. After this, he completely conquered the Wadjorese, with whom and Soppeng he at that time entered into a certain alliance called Tellong Poetje, and afterwards brought the principal kings into the Castle, where the treaty with those peoples was concluded on 23 December 1669 and signed and sworn to on 10 January thereafter, which was called Saleng laat ma ite boede dat t en samoen Pattou. Meanwhile, the Boni prince Pacokoa married the sister of Radja Palacca, from which marriage Lapatoe was born. In the year 1672 King Lamadaramma, who kept his residence in Boni, also made a voluntary abdication of his kingdom and realm, after which the electors or Aroe Pitoes, without regard to the hereditary prince, chose as King our: Radja Palacca, surnamed Toenij Sombaija or the Great, and after his death Matii roa-ri Bontualaca, preceding all previous kings. He was solemnly installed on 3 November 1672, precisely at the very hour that his above-mentioned nephew Lapataoe was born, whom he declared to be his successor. In the year 1673, with the aid of the Company's forces, he did not completely conquer the Mandarese, but nevertheless brought them so far that they humbled themselves, after which he brought the prince and the rivers of the same to the Castle, where they concluded the treaty of 10 October 1674 with the Company. 1602

From Maccassar, dated 3 Maij 1760. concluded and swore, when he, Radja, likely with premeditation, left behind those of Chiampalagie with the intention of keeping and employing these peoples as his slaves, just as the Maccassarese had done in earlier times. In the same manner he also dealt with those of Letha, a small district situated in the Toradja country, who, just like the Mandharese peoples of Chiampalagie, had already previously crossed over to the Company and entered into an alliance with it. In the year 1675 there was quite some discrepancy between President Harthouwer and Ratja Palaca, who therefore stayed in the interior, from where he requested through a missive to Their Right Noblenesses, among other matters of lesser importance, that free trade without hindrance from the Honorable Company and without having to touch at Castle Rotterdam be granted to the Bouginese, as well as to those of Ternaten and Bouton, and that in conformity with the promises made by Admiral Speelman during the war at Maccasser. In order to decide all this, Their High Noblenesses sent the elected Governor of Banda, Andries Bogaard, as commissioner here, who cleared all differences out of the way and convinced Radja that the Bougis had indeed obliged themselves, concerning navigation and trade, to behave according to the tenor of the Bongaais Contract, with which Radja Palaca then was satisfied. Meanwhile, President Harthouwer departed in the beginning of 1676 as Governor to Ternaten. In the year 1677, with the permission of the ministry, Radja Palacca waged war on those of Goach, the reasons and outcome of which are mentioned under the subject of Maccassar. Around this time, he, Palacca, was greatly puffed up by his acquired greatness and the fear he inspired over all Celebes, and had such awe among and authority over the allies that he was feared even by the Honorable Company, he having, after the conquest of Wadjo, Tjiirana, and Bonie, fortified them properly and sufficiently so that they could, if necessary, serve as a secure retreat. Among his outrages was not of the least the murderous killing, in the year 1681, of his own brother-in-law Radja Tamparang or Aroe Bacque solely out of jealousy, because he was a loyal friend and ally devoted to the Honorable Company. The ministry of that time made some efforts, though too late, to save this unfortunate man, for when the commissioners had just set out to take him, Bacque, into protection, they learned that he had already been put to death on the island of Salemon together with his retinue by Radja Palacca's soldiers. In the year 1686, Radja Palacca merely informed President Hartsink that he wished to make war on the Toradjas because they failed to pay him, Radja, their arrears of 2050 buffaloes. President Hartsink tried to counter this by offering mediation, but was afraid of merely increasing the estrangement, which was already quite great between His Honor and Radja; therefore, and because the Toradjarese of Barok to be corrected did not belong to the alliance, he let the King proceed. However, it is found that this debt had not yet been settled in 1688. In the year 1687, he had his nephew and successor Lapataoe marry the only daughter of the King of Goach on condition that the son to be born of this marriage must succeed the grandfather in the kingdom of Goach. This couple, Governor Hartsink wrote, is one of the craftiest fox's tricks that the old Radja Palacca ever devised in his life, so that, having lived in full glory, he might also ensure that his celebrated descendants would come to hold the reins of the Celebese government in their hands, whether it fell to the right or the left side. Meanwhile, this marriage became fruitful as desired, and according to the agreement, the eldest son, Sappualis, was also brought up within Goach. From Makassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. to punish some crime, the administration did indeed protest against it, but the Radja convinced them of the necessity in such a way that his action was approved. In the year 1690 their Right Excellencies ordered to oppose the aforementioned infraction of the contracts and Radja Boni, but with discretion and under protestation, in case he should again undertake something against the ally or subject. An opportunity for this presented itself to the administration shortly thereafter, when he, the Radja, together with the king of Goach and Tello, marched against Lamboko located in Soping with a quiet, well-armed troop in order to get hold of the regent, either alive or dead, to avenge a certain affront which his highness maintained had been done to him by the aforementioned regent. In the year 1691, in June, the Honorable Dirk de Haas appeared here as commissioner, who entirely cleared away the displeasure that Radja Palacca had conceived over the conduct of President Hartsink, and settled various claims of the allies and subjects. His Honor also asked all the allies in a combined meeting whether any grievances lay hidden among them which they were inclined to make known regarding the Bongaais as well as further contracts; but they declared each separately that there was nothing that displeased them and that they were completely satisfied in everything. In the years 1694 and 1695, the disputes between the Company ministers and Radja Palacca were again high and, as it were, escalated to the highest peak, because his highness, through poor management in the affairs of the king of Bima, the presumptive murderer of the king of Dompo, believed his honor and good name to have been damaged. This was an affair that not only caused this prince to depart for the interior, but which carried him so far that, being at Tjinrana Boni, he summoned the king of Goach and the regent Bonto Jongo to him and renewed with them the old alliance entered into at the time of King Bote-E, and also made the resolution to fetch the king of Bima from Castle Rotterdam, with or against the will of the Company ministers. However, his highness's illness, the death of President Prins, the removal of the shahbandar Junius, both of whom he mortally hated, and the conduct of Governor van Thije, who, strengthened by a most wise instruction from their Right Excellencies, sentenced the king of Bima, prevented all estrangements. Because of this, Radja Palacca, being subsequently well-disposed, kept his residence at Bontualacq, where on the 6th of April 1696 he departed this mortal life. Lying on his deathbed, he instructed his successor to take revenge on To-Esang, Prince of Soping, because he had deposed his sister, the queen of Soping Wesang-E, the separated wife of Radja Palacca, and had set himself up as datu. This prince and king of Boni, Radja Palacca, notwithstanding all the aforementioned troubles and sometimes wrongful management of affairs, indisputably earned the praise that, through his authority over the whole of Celebes, he confirmed the Company in its acquired conquests here. In accordance with his wish and agreement with the king and regent of Goach at Tjinrana Boni when that old alliance was secretly renewed there, he was buried within the city of Goach, where a magnificent tomb was erected in his honor. He was succeeded by his nephew, the son of Pacokoa, Lapataoe, named Matinroa-ri Nagawoelang after his death. He was married twice: first to Opoe Laroompo, a royal princess from Loeboe, with whom he fathered a daughter named Batara Todjo; the second time he married the only daughter of the Goach king Mappa Doelong, and fathered with her a daughter named Jannebanna Dapalosa, as well as three sons by the names of Sappualie-E alias the aforementioned Toaparapoe.

Besides the aforementioned children, this king left five more sons, though by different mothers of lesser birth, nevertheless legitimized according to the custom of the country by marriage, and they are named Lamapasore or trocapala, Lamasoszong now Djalal oedien, Lawatta Liang or Aroe Bacqua, Lamaddie and Latongang or Aroe Paudjilie. The next to youngest was murdered in the days of his youth on the island of Sakoaal lying off Tanete; mention will be made of the remaining four in what follows. Already shortly after his succession, he departed for Soping without the prior knowledge of the Governor, and carried out the order given to him by his uncle: pursued To Esang and several Sopingese princes, and restored the queen of Soping to her state. Because of this conduct of his, he accounted for himself to the satisfaction of their Excellencies, after which the aforementioned approved and confirmed his election, only in 1698, on the condition that his Highness had to swear to and confirm the Boni Contract which was first to be adapted somewhat to the present times, or changed into another deed; which having occurred, he, Lapataoe, also called Ederees, was solemnly presented to the people on the 23rd of August of the aforementioned year by Governor van Plijen, in the name of the Company, as the lawfully chosen king of Boni. The aforementioned Governor guided this young prince with prudence, whereby the disputes that had already risen high between this Court and Goach were settled and a reconciliation was brought about. One cannot omit to note here, against Valentijn, that up to the present day nothing of Maros or the Northern Provinces has ever been ceded, and that the donation of half of Sodiaa took place upon the favorable proposal of the Honorable Commissioner de Haas, this tract of land being reasonably large, yet it has no inhabitants and very seldom yields two lasts of rice for the Honorable Company; the same was confiscated again for the Honorable Company after the war of the year 1710, and the principal utility of retaining it is that it makes the Nine Regencies of the Macassars incomplete. From Maccassar, dated the 3rd of May 1760. From Maccassar, dated the 3rd of May 1760. In the early part of the year 1700, the murder of Daleng Mabani by Aroe Teko occurred, which, along with its consequences, is described more than too extensively by Valentijn. In the year 1708, this prince, upon the death of the queen, was elected King of Soping, which he fully accepted, but immediately thereafter ordered the Sopingese to accept and recognize Prince To Esang as their king, which was done with pleasure, after which he departed again for Tjinrana Boni. In the year 1710, with the prior knowledge and assistance of the Honorable Company, he waged war on the Macassars for the reason that they stubbornly continued to refuse to surrender his son Lapadang Aroe Palacca to the Company. He was severely wounded in an encounter with the enemy, but nevertheless recovered again quite quickly and triumphed, as is briefly mentioned under the subject of Maccassar, and in detail and truthfully by Valentijn. However, the aforementioned writer commits a great error in that treatise where he says that there was a king in Boni named Lateredoumi and another of Goach named likewise, since these are the names of Boni's sword and Goach's sidearm, both state heirlooms, upon which, in the time of the Boni King Bote-E, the alliance with the Macassars was sworn, and renewed by the old Radja Palacca at Tjinrana Boni. In the year 1713, this prince departed for Tjinrana Boni somewhat displeased because his son Aroe Palacca, who was living not in, but under the Castle, under the Company's protection, would not come over to him; where his beloved Lomo or concubine Rokia passed away, over which he became so dejected that he resolved to surrender the government and go to Mecca, but this was prevented by the Honorable Company.

Maccassar under the date 3 May 1760. prevented by the persuasion of the various kings who had arrived for the condolence, among whom were also that of Goach, together with the old administrator of the realm Bontosongoa. With which last-mentioned king he at that time renewed the old alliance between Boni and Goach, which had been broken by the war of the year 1718, and whereby he caused some fear of unrest among the ministry, the more so because shortly thereafter, without any prior notice, he waged war against the Toradjas: and in like manner deposed the Matoa of Wadjo and appointed another in his place. His Highness arrived on 13 September 1714 from Tjinrana at Bontualacq, but very ill with violent fevers, and where on the 17th thereafter, in the morning at two o'clock, he died very suddenly, whereby the Honorable Company was relieved of a worrisome king and difficult character. Upon the announcement of that death by the authorized Bonese grandees of the realm, the Governor and Council were also informed that their deceased king during his life at Tjinrana, with the consent of the Aroe Pitoes or seven lords, as well as all the Bonese grandees, had appointed as his successor his eldest daughter Batara Todja, also called Aroe Timoerong, and after her death Matinroa-ri Tippoeloe. The day after the burial of the king's body within Tjinrana, she was brought there in state to the great house called Lantimoedjong and publicly proclaimed Queen of Boni, but in the year 1735 on 3 August she made abdication of her realm and state to her half-brother, who shortly before had been chosen King of Soping, Lapadang Sadjati, alias Toapawara, Aroe Palacca, and after his death called Matinroa-ri Beoela. His Highness's sister, after her abdication known by the title-name Datoua-ri Tjitta, followed the court together with her husband Aroe Tjalileng to Bontualaca, where between this last-named and the king on 19 October 1719 a matter occurred which was the origin 113 Maccassar under the date 3 May 1760. Maccassar under the date 3 May 1760. from which subsequently many disasters for Boni arose, namely: His Highness had given his youngest-born little son to Datoua-ri Tjitta to be raised, who being at her house became very ill, but she let the king know nothing about it until the child was at the point of death, whereby it then also happened that His Highness, coming to see this child of his at his sister's house, found it already deceased. Whereupon the prince was very upset and asked why he had not been warned earlier, while in despondency making some outcry, he was seized by Aroe Djalileng, while crying Amok, Amok, the king wants to harm himself. But the king, having wrestled his hands free, said to the bystanders: look here, my kris, I do not intend to run amok; handing his sidearm over to one of his confidants, and he returned to his palace. This incident gave much matter for reflection and conversation, both among the Buginese themselves and among others; but the king, not having the most favorable thoughts about it, only a few days thereafter had Aroe Djalileng's kris demanded from him, and had his sister asked whether she also had knowledge of the treason of her husband. Who thereupon merely had the king answered that she was a subject of Boni, with the request that no dishonor might be done to her husband, since he had not sinned; adding thereto that she now experienced that the curse of the parents was not made in vain, for, said she, my lord father, having appointed me to the succession, declared that he would be cursed who placed the crown on the head of Lapadang, which I have done with so much affection. But these reproaches caused the king to become more enraged; he had Datoua Tjitta and her husband plundered, declared all her inherited estates in Boni confiscated, and that she was likewise deprived of the regency over Loeboe; subsequently he had her and her husband both, to his own downfall and ruin, transported to Boni.

These actions of the king had occurred without any form of judicial process, and were thus detested by all the dignitaries of the realm, who meanwhile were moved with compassion for the princess, and thus the king's fate was decided with this outcome: that His Highness, shortly after that event (having departed for Tsiiranabom), was there on 20 January 1720 not only finally deposed, but even, together with his wife's father the Pongauwa, thrown into prison. After this, the Boniers again offered the realm to Datoua-ri-Tjitta, but she immediately surrendered it to her eldest half-brother, the dethroned king of Goach, Sappuali-E, alias Toaparappoe, then called Madaurang, also Daleng Bouto, and after his death Matinaoa-ri-Samboupo. He was not inaugurated until 8 October of the same year, by which time his brother, the dethroned king, had already escaped from his prison, arriving on the 15th thereafter with upwards of 800 souls in Campong Baroe under this Castle, and requested the protection of the Honourable Company. However, he was answered regarding that request that they would see to a reconciliation between them. Daeaig bonto, after his second dethronement, went to Goach, from whose king he received the title of caraleng 't na montjong; it is said that he met his end by poison, which his sister or rather her husband Aroe Krijoe had prepared for him. Which newly elected king, after this escape, had also hastened hither in such a manner that His Highness, together with his entire family, arrived at Bontualaca on the 18th of the last-mentioned month! Whereof he duly gave notice on the 20th through commissioners, after which, through the mediation of Governor Sipman, these two brothers completely reconciled with one another on 13 January 1721. Meanwhile, the Boniers also quickly took a dislike to this king, who now also allowed himself to be ruled by his favourites who had caused him to abandon the Goarese throne, so that nothing was done at court except gambling and entertaining themselves with fishing and hunting, etc. This also caused Aroe Palacca to retreat to Rapan, whither several Bonese dignitaries followed him. While his brother Arae Mampoe went to Boii, where in the latter part of the year 1721 the rumour reached his ears that the king had been informed by evil persons that he, Mampoe, wished to dethrone his sovereign. 117. From Maccassar dated 3 May 1760. From Maccassar dated 3 May 1760. Whereupon this prince, in April 1723, came down hither with three thousand men to demand satisfaction from his brother the King regarding the accusers. But the King became so terrified on this account that he fled on the 29th of the aforementioned month from Boutualacq to Campong Baroe, immediately requesting the protection of the Honourable Company, which was promised to him. But the kings who remained at Bontualaca brought about so much with the electors and with the King of Goach that the fugitive King returned the next day to Bontualacq. Upon whose arrival there, the King of Goach being present, he drove all the Boniers from the house, so to speak, saying: "Away, away, Boniers, let the Macassars come up; as long as there is still one Bonier who remains faithful to the King, I will protect him." Whereby fear came over the Boniers, so that they, all except the King's brother, took the oath of fealty to the King de novo. Yet the smouldering fire was, after the dawn of Batavia Todja—after her death Matinroa-ri-Tjippoeloe, who was also Datoua or Queen of Loeboe, and not long thereafter, by having her brother Lapadang Sadjatie put to death, also became Queen of Soping; immediately Her Highness's consort Aroe Djalie-leng was appointed co-regent of the realm, who died in the year 1725, after which this sovereign in March 1726 entered into marriage for the fourth time— (1) Canaang Bessie: this title was given to him by the King of Goach, to whom he had fled after his dethronement; he died some years later in Goach. His son, the present Aroe Mampoe, is a worthy and brave prince, held in high esteem by the Company and the King of Boen. kindled into flames by the words of the King of Goach among the Boniers, so that in January of the following year, 1724, this King was finally deposed, and in his place was elected his youngest brother, Topawawoi or Aroe Mamipoe, afterwards called Caraleng Bessie. This man received no posthumous name after his death. He also did not last long, and was already deposed again on 12 June, a mere four days after his inauguration at Tjunanna, for the reason that he had mounted the throne by force (as the Boniers say); and immediately in his place was elected as Queen for the first time Batavia Todja.

Marriage alliance with Aroe Kaijoe, a natural son of the banished, deceased Aroe Teeko, who was likewise appointed regent of the realm shortly after his marriage. This marriage was immediately of bad intention and of no better consequence, for this prince, who besides was by no means Dutch-minded, considering himself greatly aggrieved by a certain tumult that arose in October of the same year in the Campong Boegis, gave free rein to his desire for revenge. This then led him first secretly to sound out the Macassars to see whether they were inclined to assist him, but finding these unwilling, he addressed himself to the Bonian princes, among whom the sons of Lapataoe, begotten of mothers of lesser birth, likewise absolutely refused him any help. Seeing thus no chance to undertake anything against the Company, he turned his rage against the aforementioned princes, of whom the next eldest was Pongouwa, or vice-commander. This man was then wrongfully accused of having committed adultery with the daughter of the Mandanrang, or supreme commander. Being pursued on this account, he retired, on the advice of the queen herself, to Siang, but having been there a short time, all his firearms and weapons were demanded from him by order of the queen, for which reason he went with his three brothers to Soping to his half-brother, King Lapadang Sadjati. The queen, learning this, was brought to the belief that the King of Soping, with the help of these princes, would try to supplant her and set himself up again as King of Boni, wherefore Her Highness prepared for war against Soping. As soon as this came to the ears of Lapadang Sadjati, he advised his brothers to flee over Boni to Bouton, and to proceed from there with the next coming easterly monsoon to Castle Rotterdam under the protection of the Honorable Company, which he likewise intended to do. According to this agreement, the four brothers then departed for Bouton, and King Lapadang first to Tjinrana, which made him all the more suspect to the queen, who then immediately had him pursued. But he fled overland to Tanette to 121. From Macassar, dated 3 May 1760. When this atrocity came to the ears of the brothers at Bouton, they requested the protection of the King of Bouton, who promised it to them, and by which they were then in vain demanded by the queen with the sending of a silk cord. Meanwhile, the eldest brother, Aroe Apala, left Bouton, went wandering by sea, and subsequently arrived at Malacca, from where, wishing to return hither after a stay of some [illegible], he died and was buried on the island of Luboek or Baliang. Concerning the murdered King Lapadang Sadjati and his children, something remarkable occurred in the time of Governor Smouts; namely, a certain two persons appeared here at the castle, claiming to be the natural sons of this king, named Ande Ande and Mappa Soure, and were as such recognized in the beginning by various Bonians, yes, among these by their father's brother, the present King of Boni. They related that their lord father and brothers were still alive and that they were staying in the mountains of Mandhar. But although their assertion, especially with the Governor, seemed to be taken for truth, it appeared soon thereafter that it had been a disguise of two mere common people of Adje Tamparang or Sedeering, who had known how to make themselves beloved among the Toradjas and were incited by them to pass themselves off as the sons of the aforementioned king, instructing them what they had to say and do. The youngest managed to maintain himself for some time as a son of the king at Siang, but had to flee thereafter, the eldest being a slave to a certain Quaddeesen.

After the aforementioned regarding the murder of the King of Soping had been carried out, Her Highness, displeased with Governor Gobius, departed for Tjinrana Boni, the so-called sulking corner of the kings of this realm, where she was proclaimed Queen of Soping and thus awaited the approval of Their Honorable Excellencies regarding her election and marriage, which having arrived, Her Highness and her consort both accepted and swore to the contracts. Due to this, the regent Aroe Kaijoe fancied himself qualified to be king and shortly thereafter resolved to trip up his queen and then take back to himself his beloved abandoned wife Caraleng Bontomajene. However, in October 1728, this plot breaking out, he was de facto declared unworthy of the regency, and at the same time his life was sought with such earnestness that he took flight by night to Tello and obtained protection there. Later he allied himself with Caraceng Bontolancas, but during the troubles with that rebel, he came to his end. In the year 1730, the three princes of Lapataoe (of whom mention was made earlier) arrived here from Bouton, placing themselves under the protection of the Company and taking up residence in Campong Baroe. Meanwhile the Queen remained dissatisfied (because the district of Bonthain was withheld from her by the Company) within Tjinrana Boni, where the Mandanaang or Commander-in-Chief, together with the First Tomarilalang or Privy Councillor, just as the administrator of the realm did at Bontualacq, directed everything according to their pleasure and more than likely colluded with the enemies who had then emerged here, Aroe Seenkang and associates and the rebel Bontolancas; whereby the way was paved for the total ruin of the realm of Boni, whose beginning and progress will be treated as briefly as possible. Aroe Seenkang, a dissatisfied Wadjo prince, had for some years been committing piracy at sea together with his Capitain Laut Touassa, and had meanwhile conquered Passia and Coeti, and plundered Tontoli and Bwool 125 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 plundered, as well as attacked the Company's vessels. These individuals, thus practicing their rapacity in the years 1735 and 1736 around Mandhar and Cadjelie, were indeed engaged by our cruisers, though in vain; whereafter, in the beginning of 1736, within sight of this Castle, they raided the Company's islands and set fire to all the houses standing thereon. Hereupon the ministers of that time immediately equipped several vessels which, being well commanded, were fully capable of overpowering the enemy, with whom they then engaged in action, which was broken off by the evening. While the following night the enemy, having misled our men in some clever manner without having suffered notable damage, escaped toward Wadjo; whereby the origin of all the subsequent evil over the realm of Boni was opened. For the Queen, upon the earnest written demand of the Company's ministers, demanded the handover of this pirate from Wadjo, while Her Highness had also long previously pursued Bontolancas solely because he had become an enemy of the Honorable Company, saying to her grandees of the realm: the Company's enemies are Boni's enemies. Meanwhile, the Wadjoese refused to surrender Aroe Seenkang; wherefore Boni waged war against them, though with an unfortunate outcome and an even more fatal result, because the Commander-in-Chief and the Privy Councillor colluded with the enemy. The Queen, realizing (though too late) that the wagon was not running straight, summoned the Prince, her brother, who had arrived here from Bouton to the Company, and gave the eldest of the three, the Pangauwa, along with the title of Datoua Baringan, command over the army. However, Aroe Seenkang having in the meantime become Matoua of Wadjo, matters had already taken such a bad turn that there was no remedy for them, which caused our mountain captain Steijns (sent to the aid of the Queen) to abandon Boni and return hither. Thus Her Highness, seeing that everything was going backward like a crab, also sent the Prince Pongouwa in June 1737 to this Castle with full power to represent her person, presenting him as a token

Therebefore or in the month of May, the Company ministers had, at the request of the grandees of Soping, allowed the Aroe Tanette, surnamed the Mad Duke, to depart for Soping in order to protect that land against the Wadjorese. However, this rogue concerned himself little with the Wadjorese, and first brought it about among the Sopingers that they deposed the Queen and chose him as their Datoua or King, and then plagued the Boniers so long until they also made him King of Boni. But the Wadjorese appointed a rival Queen named Dangraija, the minor daughter of the present Radja Palacca and Limpangang, the then recently chosen and currently reigning King of Tello. Now, instead of this Mad Duke, who otherwise was known as a brave soldier, restoring Boni and Soping from the domination of the Wadjorese to their former lustre, he came down to this Castle and made his elevation known to the Company ministers himself. But against his expectation, this was not even accepted as a communication, because this notification had not, according to custom, been made first by the grandees of the realm. Meanwhile, this Madman continued to reside at Bontualacq until in February 1738 he learned with certainty that the Queen, having fled from Boni, was about to arrive here; whereupon he quietly took flight from Bontualacq to Tanette on the 5th of that month, and thus made way for Her Highness, who arrived safely here on the 21st thereafter, and immediately very wisely granted a full pardon to all the grandees of the realm. Furthermore, she appointed the Prince Pongauwa or Datoua Baringan as young King or Regent and successor over Boni and Soping, from then on handing over the management of affairs entirely to him, retaining for herself only the oversight of the women. This arrival and this wise conduct greatly improved the Company interests here, which at that time presented no advantageous aspect at all. While the realm of Boni, meanwhile abandoned, was very much troubled. Since Aroe Tanette, after his flight from here, first departed for Loeboe, and from there returned to Boni with some people, and there rashly waged war against the Wadjorese. But these defeated him totally and demanded payment of their war costs, for which he had to employ all the gold and silver of the Queen, alongside all the royal jewels of Boni kept within Tsiirana, and furthermore abandon the realm. It was then at the discretion of Wadjo, who recognized Princess Dangraija, mentioned above, as Queen, just as they had accepted the rebel Bontolancas as King of Goach, and in this manner declared themselves, as three allied realms, enemies of the Company. In this way they came down here in the year 1739, took possession of Goach, and demanded the surrender of this Castle Rotterdam. But how it went with them has been made known under the subject of Makassar. Now after the Company was avenged and restored and confirmed in its state, Boni also had to be restored, for which the Company forces, strengthened with all well-intentioned allies under the high command of Admiral and Commander Smout and the young King, departed by water for Wadjo on the 3rd of December 1740. There the combined forces fought against the enemy up to two times and remained victorious, by which affairs stood so advantageously that one had nothing else to do but to march on to Tossora, the capital place of Wadjo, to achieve a complete victory over that entire land. However, whatever the truth of this may be is not easy to fathom; this alone is certain, that they left Boni only half restored, and allowed the Wadjorese, who were unwilling to renew the contracts with the Company, to walk according to the pleasure of their own hearts. In April 1741 Admiral Smout arrived

131 Passage Cassan under date the 3rd of May 1760 Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. From smout with the Company's forces and equipment guilders arrived back at the Castle here, where His Honour very quickly perceived the justified displeasure of the queen, who, together with the young king and court dignitaries, managed her country's affairs as best as possible. Meanwhile the disputes with Wadjo, both concerning the Company and Boni, have not been settled to this day. In the meantime, in the name of the preservation of general peace, the queen was prevented from pursuing her rightful and lawful claim to Aroe Taulte or Dollen Hartog, and to her greater grief was withheld the title deed of the District of Bonthain, which the High Nobilities had granted to the rulers, just as to her predecessors, in recognition of former services. In the year 1749 in the month of April Her Highness departed, after an eleven-year stay at Bontualacq, while assuring the then Governor Loten of her sincere affection for the Company and esteem for His Honour's person, to Tjiirana Boni, where that ruler died on the 2nd of November of the same year; and in her place was elected the regent or young king, Her Highness's half-brother Lamasosjong under the name of Abdul Radsjab Djalal Oedien. Soping, from ancient times also one of the most powerful realms on Celebes, lies in the interior, the western shores and the west bank of the gulf or bay of Boni, upon and along mountains and valleys. To the north it has the great lake or Tamparang Labaija; to the south it borders Lamoeroe, which in ancient times, along with many free provinces or small realms, belonged under the same, which with and through time have become independent or subject to Boni. It yields nothing but paddy, and in the year 1661, after the flight of Radja Palacca, became subject to the Maccassars, and was restored to freedom by the Company in the year 1667. These kings of the realm have through mutual marriages been allied with those of Boni from ancient times. The first king was named Latamamang; of him the Sopingers say that he had descended from heaven. After him succeeded his son Laballa; after this one his daughter Weteke Wanouang; after her her son Lakaralla; after this one his son Lapaniesiang; after this one his son 133. From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 Sourompali-E; after this one his son Lawanoesa; of him it is recorded that he was virtuous and that in his time the land was very fertile. After this one succeeds his son Lande-E; he was conquered by the Maccassar king Tonij Palanga, but accepted as an ally of Maccassar. After him succeeds his son Lasekattij, from whom Radja Palacca descends regarding his lineage from Soping. After him succeeded his youngest brother Lama Tasso, by Speelman named Lapato Langie. After this one succeeded his grandson Bes-E; that was the first Mohammedan king. He was succeeded by a son of his sister Witinrigella, whom Mr. Speelman also counts among the kings of Soping, and was named Labaa, by Mr. Speelman Totanriba, after his death Matinuoa-nDatoena. During his reign and lifetime, not only Boni in the year 1643, but eighteen years later Soping also became subject to the Maccassars, whereafter this ruler was banished and thus wandered about until the arrival of Mr. Speelman and the conquest of Maccassar, when he was restored to his devastated realm and estates. After him succeeded his daughter Wesang-E, after her death called Matinroa-r Madello; she was married to Radja Palacca, but separated again. Her brother Tob-sang rose against her in the final years of the life of Radja Palacca, dethroning her, and had himself proclaimed Datoua or King of Soping. Radja Palacca, learning this, prepared himself to restore Wesang-E, but fell ill and died; however, lying on his deathbed, he had earnestly recommended this to his successor Lapataa, who also promptly executed it. After her death the Sopingers elected the king of Boni, Lapatroe; he accepted the realm, but after having taken possession he asked the Sopingers whether they were fully prepared to obey his orders, which being answered in the affirmative, this ruler ordered that the realm's dignitaries [illegible] the Soping [illegible] surrender, but I find [illegible] was

From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. would discharge from the realm, and accept as their King the legitimate hereditary Prince To E sang, which the people of soping did with pleasure, while Lapataoe immediately departed thence back to bom. After the death of this one, the sopingers once again chose. Concerning Lapataae, his life's events, see Bom. He ruled soping until his death, whereupon the peoples of this country came down to this Castle and requested of the Company's ministers that they might choose as their Datoua: Lapadang Sadjati, who resided under the Company's protection below Castle rotterdam; which request was granted to them, and thus this prince departed for soping the year after his election. Having arrived there, the Realm of Bom was also transferred to him. The history of his life is mentioned under the matter of bom. After his dethronement, the sopingers chose as his successor in the Bouis Realm: Sappualie=E, who, after a reign of about four years, was deposed from bomi and soping, whereupon these grandees of the realm chose for the second time: Papadang sadjati, who in the year 1727 was persecuted by his sister Last and was killed along with his entire family; whereupon these peoples chose that same princess in Batara Todjo as their Datoua, who governed this realm until the year 1737, when the wadjoreesen had subdued her and her country, and therefore the sopingers chose: Laodang, surnamed Aroe Faulte, the mad Duke; after his death matrie roa: ri moesoena. During his time, soping was very much damaged by the war; however, these peoples made no other election until after his Death, when they once again chose the Queen of the boniers, Batava Todjo. After Her Highness's death, this Realm fell to her brother and heir Djallal oedin. But upon his accession to boni, he turned it over to his brother Latongang Aroe Land Jlie, who in the year 1758 was finally deposed by the grandees of the realm, and in his place was chosen the king of boni: Abdul Radjas Djalal oedien, called Datoua n Tjitta by the sopingers. He accepted the realm on condition that His Highness would have them governed by a stadtholder or nica Roij, and appointed thereto his son-in-law mappa, Aroe Patood Jo, which the sopingers agreed to, and they accepted the proposed stadtholder. Of this deposition and election, the sopinese grandees gave notice in a solemn manner to Governor Blok, and through envoys requested approval thereof from the Honourable Gentlemen. The remaining further histories of several of these Kings are described under the matter of boni. Loeboe, before the rise in power of the maccassaers and bomsche, was the most violent and largest realm on all of Celebes. Under the matter of maccassaers, it is mentioned how it declined and was conquered by Tonija Palanga with the help of bomi. Currently they calculate their jurisdiction from Zelope, the capital or village, along the western shore of the Gulf to Larompo, being about 20 miles, and on the other side of the residency it extends over the entire south-eastern part, between the gulf and the eastern shores of this Celebes, as far inland as the Alphoureesen will tolerate him; to the west it borders on wadjo and to the North on the Toradjereesen. The land is fertile with paddy and sago, yields good iron, and also gold from the rivers. The names of the kings from ancient times appear nowhere. The first who is mentioned in the Company's papers was, along with the maccassaers in whose service he was, defeated on boutou in the year 1666, and submitted himself completely to the Honourable Company, with the promise to enter into a further written Contract; and this person was elsewhere called Caraleng Haroe, being at that time only 15 years old and under the supervision of his Chenning or Regent, who also thereafter for some time

139 Under date 3 May 1760 From Ma Hd Maccassar under date 3 May 1760 served for some time for and with us against the Maccassars, and inflicted as much harm upon that enemy as possible; yet in August 1668, without any substantial reason, he defected to Telzo. The king himself was sent to Batavia, and with the son of Montemerano (the Maccassar general on Bouton) fled from there to Bantam, whence, after a stay of three years on Java and wandering about elsewhere, they finally arrived back at Maccassar. During these circumstances there was in Loeboe a certain Daleng Lolo, administrator of the realm, through whom a very solemn and mutual alliance was concluded with Boni, Lamia Pamadang or Daleng Mazourou being chosen as Datu, this being an older son of the deceased King, begotten with the sister of Daleng Lolo, and thus of no lesser birth than the fugitive; He made the son of Daleng Lolo chemming or administrator of the realm. Meanwhile, these peoples remained loyal to the Company, but especially to Boni, having acted as allies alongside our forces in the war against Wadjo and others. Being presently in some degree subject to Boni, they dare undertake nothing of importance without its consent; whether this has its origin in the aforementioned alliance, or whether it is on account of Boni's King Batara Todso having also been Datu of Soping, is not rightly known. The present Datu is the queen of Tanette, Tanrilile, also called Ajsa, who in the month of this year 1759 was chosen for that position for the second time, having previously, in the year 1736, been forced to flee from that realm of hers to Tanette to her brother. Tanette or Aganonsja, meaning a bridge or crossing, lies halfway between Castle Rotterdam and the bay of Sorian; it has to the east the principality of Mariari Wawo, to the north Baroe, to the south Sagerie, and to the west the sea. At that time it lived in friendship with Maccassar, but during the reign of Tolma-Pari-sika-kalonna it was conquered, though it retained its freedom and was recognized as an ally of Maccassar, whose kings gradually arrogated somewhat more authority over this principality to themselves, until in effect it was considered merely subject to Maccassar, as it is also designated as such in the Maccassar conference of September 1668. This small territory is fertile in paddy, has good hunting, and the mountains yield gold, though little. At the time of Mr. Speelman, King Abrahim ruled over this little realm, then already between 50 and 60 years old. During the peace of Boni he came over to the Company and was recognized as an ally, having accepted and solemnly sworn to the aforementioned contract; and during the second war he proved faithful. Daleng Natoelang was his son and heir. This and the following ruler, whose names do not appear in the transactions, seem all to have adhered steadily to the alliance. From the year 1735 until 1747, there appears as ruler of this little realm Joseph Facaroedien, surnamed the Mad Duke, after his death Matinaoa-ri-moesoena; he is known on Java, where he served in the military in the service of the Company. In July 1747 he fell in an encounter with his neighbors of Nego, and left the little realm to his sister Tanrilile, also called A-Jsa, this little territory being at that time in the direst distress, so that without the effectual aid of the Company it surely would have been devastated. For this reason, this ruler placed herself under the protection of the Company and made a voluntary surrender and assignment of her lands to it; but as soon as the danger was past, she promptly backed out. Meanwhile, however, she continued to adhere to the Company, probably because she was thus safe from the power of Boni's king. Nevertheless, it must be recorded here to her credit that with all readiness she sent some forces to Java to the aid of the Company. In the month of December 1758 she departed for Loeboe, and not long after her arrival there was chosen queen of that realm for the second time. Prior to Her Highness's departure, she reconciled with Boni's king and entrusted the administration of the territory of Tanete to the Company's ministers and the king of Bomi. In Mandhaer H

140 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1768. Mandhaer, situated on the sea, has Cafelie to the north, Binoang is the southernmost, and to the east it has mountains; which serves them as a secure refuge whenever an enemy who is too powerful for them enters their land, leaving then the coastal villages empty and as prey. The government consisted in former times of ten estates, all of which are allied with the Company; three of these came over to the Company of their own free will, namely Mapillij, Bouco, and Chiampalagie. Of this last it is mentioned that it is a Toraja village, sorting under Bellaniepa, and that following the peace of 1674 it was presented as subject to Radja Palacca. These three aforementioned estates, however, entered into a contract with Mr. Speelman on the 6th of August 1669, but the same was not signed or sworn. The two first-named also made, signed, and swore to the contract of the 10th of October 1674. Nevertheless, all three of these are held as slaves of Boni, to whom they render tribute, which was probably thus arranged by Radja Palacca because under the rule of the Macassars they were not counted among the Palilij or freedmen, but among the Hambas or slaves, and perhaps because they did not conduct themselves faithfully in the further uprising of these peoples after the conclusion of the contract. The other seven estates are commonly called the princes of the seven rivers, namely of Bellampa, Matsene, Binoang, Lamboang, Chinrana, Tampalang, and Namoetje. These peoples, as well as the three estates mentioned just before, formerly showed obedience to the Macassars, although it is not known that they were forced or conquered thereto; they nevertheless had to yield annually some long shields as a sign of subjection, and even had to tolerate for some years a great Governor on behalf of Maccassar, whom they rejected in the year 1658, yet remained faithful to Maccassar and assisted them in their wars, the Maradias of Matsene and Chinrana having fallen into our hands on Boutan with 7 to 800 men, and have probably with slight force 145 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 588 acted against us in the war on Maccassar. By the Boni contract, the Macassars renounced all dominion over Mandhaer, after which these princes were summoned several times to contract with the Company, but they stubbornly refused to do so, except Billampa, having been led to believe by the evil Crourang that our assurance of the Macassars' renunciation was a fabrication. For this reason they were indeed warred upon by the Company and Boni, but not conquered, fleeing to the mountains; yet it appears that they came to their senses when Radja Palacca had summoned all the allies in the beginning of 1674 and was in readiness to descend upon them with 30000 men, wherefore they all together, or nine estates, came up hither, humbled themselves, and signed and swore to the contract on the 10th of October in the year 1674. This alliance the princes of the seven rivers mentioned before renewed, signed, and swore to according to the custom of the country in the year 1757, having been called hither by Boni to settle their disputes among one another. Being unable to pass over mentioning here that at that time they testified that they did not know that their ancestors had contracted with the Company, but rather with Radja Palacca. Since that time they have once again fallen into disagreement with each other, and pretend that they therefore cannot dispatch any envoys to their Excellencies to request approval of the renewal. These disputes, although averted once again by the Company's intercession, have flared up anew. Like many other of these Celebes peoples, it is a fickle nation that can be brought to its duty by nothing but force. They have never steered themselves much by the contracts, least of all by the articles that bind them to sail with passes from the Company and that forbid them from admitting any vessels without the Company's pass-permits; but aside from this, because of the awe that they still hold in other cases for the Company and Boni, as well as their demonstrated readiness to assist the Company in the last war, they are worthy of regard.

847 From Maccassar under date the 3. May 1760 Maccassar under date the 3 May 1760. From to be regarded Toadja according to the Makassarese, or Wadjo, according to the Bone pronunciation, is situated north of the river of Tjiirana Boni, which separates this land from the Kingdom of Boni, extending itself to Pancke, which belongs under Wadjo as a free principality and borders on Cottenga, behind which in Kara it extends still further northward to Larompa or Hoeboe; to the west it abuts the limits of the Dja Tamparang division. It is governed by forty princes or regents, among whom women are also admitted. All these must reside within Wadjo; however, when required, they may go to their land to arrange what is necessary there, but return after the dispatch of affairs. Under this territory fall various free principalities as allies, who indeed exercise absolute supreme power over their settlements, yet have no vote in the state of Wadjo itself, so that in making war or peace, they must submit to the decision From each of these three parties, two chiefs are again chosen, the one for war named Patara and the other for civil administration named Padenrang, who have as their president the Matoua or chosen supreme king, who is not included among the three parties. These seven princes, among whom no women are admitted, form a council and, in the name of Wadjo or the Forty, exercise the highest authority over everything, except the making of war or peace, for which the grand council convenes and wherein the Matoua has two votes if necessary. In the absence of this eminent head of the Forty These forty princes are divided into three parts, which are called Betteng Taurang, Binting Pola, and Toua, each having a main banner under which they belong, as Patolaija belongs to the first, Pila-E to the second, and Chiakonridie to the last-mentioned party. of the 149. From Maccassar under date the 3. May 1760. From Maccassar under date the 3 May 1760. the Matoua, the three parties, or the thirty-nine, are likewise called together, who choose another from their body, without regard to the family of the predecessor; yet the vacant regencies are chosen from the closest blood of the predecessor, provided they are not born of a slave mother. During the expansion of the Makassarese power during the reign of its king Tonig Palanga, these peoples also had their share in the oppression, yet for 100 catty of gold retained their freedom and were accepted as allies of the Makassarese, though not so completely but that there remained some obligation to Maccassar as a token of conquest, which those of Wadjo no longer observed after the death of Palanga, engaging themselves with the Bone king Bonkang-E, who was then unjustly attacked by the Makassarese, making an alliance with this prince and with the kingdom of Soping, which is called Lamoen Patoea-ri-Timoerong, under the following conditions: Boukang-E releases Wadjo from the slavery of the Makassarese. Tsinrana must remain common, and none of the three contracting parties may fortify themselves there. Boni grants to Soping the settlement Goa- goa, and Wadjo the settlement Baringan, both with their dependencies. Hereupon an offensive and defensive alliance was concluded and sworn at the settlement Timoerong. Anno 1606, when Boni was brought to the Mohammedan faith, these peoples were also forced to accept the same, and at the same time obtained from the introducer of that false faith, Goa's regent-ri-agamaena, permission to remain bound by the old treaty concluded with Tonij Palanga, and since that time they have always remained good and very loyal allies of Maccassar. Afterwards they were conquered by the Bone king Lamadarama or Opoene Pacokoa and multiple times, but each time returned again to the Makassarese, for whom, after the conquest of Maccassar by Mr. Speelman, they still stepped into the breach, and have also been the most obstinate Boukangh been.

This stain the present king of boni indeed sought to wipe out and bring this country under subjection during the life and reign of his sister, the aforementioned woman, with the help of the Company; but owing to the division of views among the Dutch commanders, by sickness in the army, particularly among the Europeans, and by the rumors of the revolt of the Chinese at batavia, our men had to withdraw with the game nearly won. Tellong Loetje. Is the same alliance as that of Lamoen Patoear Timoerong, but with the annulment of the conditions; for radja Palaca, after the conquest of wadjo, not only took possession of baringang and goa goa, but also attached Timoerong to the realm of boni and fortified sjinrana, under the pretext that wadjo had first broken the Lamoen Patoea when they helped the Maccassars to bring boni and soping into slavery. Meanwhile, these peoples remain by themselves, living peacefully among one another, and pursue their trade, being the greatest merchants and traders, and at present also the richest, yea the most formidable peoples of all selebes. They do not care about the contracts entered into either with the Company or with boni, and say that these have lapsed through the last war, refusing to renew the Tellong Loetje with boni except under the conditions as at the conclusion of the Lamoen Patoea, and demanding that Timoerong must return to wadjo; but boni wants nothing other than how radja Palaca made this alliance. How long this dispute will yet endure, and what will finally come of it, time must reveal; meanwhile it is very certain that wadjo increases in power, and boni is diminished in its esteem. Aroe seeukang, currently Paneke, already abdicated the government some years ago, but no other matoua has been chosen in his place; he currently bears the title of aroe Lancke and, through his robbers, 153 From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. From Macassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. robbers does much annoyance to boni. If this prince, who is already advanced in years, happens to die before the king of boni, there is hope that the dispute between boni and wadjo may be settled without a rupture, because many of the peoples of this country, being merchants, entirely love peace. Toerattea extends from the river Tjikoa, along the shores southward and eastward as far as the river Fina, whose eastern bank belongs to bonthain; to the north it borders on maccassar, and to the west and south it has the sea. In ancient times it was a free country and people, divided under several kings independent of one another, but the principal ones were those of Loaija, currently binamo, and bankala. The small district of Linquis lay between these two boundaries, around the bay of Toerattea. According to the Maccassar registers, this district was conquered by Toema Parie sica Kalloua, but was governed by its own princes; however, in the course of time, they were also regarded as a subject people and kept under a very severe yoke, as those princes themselves testified when they, together with the whole of Poelembankang, came over from the Maccassar garrison to the Company in October 1667, adding that they had long since wished and watched for an opportunity to cast off the Maccassar yoke. The coming over of these peoples greatly facilitated the peace of bonaja; but thereafter they accomplished nothing or little to the advantage of the common cause. Notwithstanding this, they obtained their complete freedom from the Company under the bonaja contract, according to the promises made to them, which fell very hard on the Maccassars; and which privilege the Bonians have sought to wrest from them ever since that time, for during the peace, the latter plundered this people more than they had done to the enemy during the war, thrusting these words upon them: you people are now slaves of our king and your property is ours. Yea, even the princes seemed to consider radja Palacca during that time under the title

Thus some Bonians and most of the distant allies still will not believe or know any better than that Radja Palacca was the leader and the Company his helper in the war of 1667; even the Wadjoese dared not trust the repeated assurances of Mr. Speelman because they believed that Radja Palacca held the highest authority not only over the military force but also over us, and that they, notwithstanding our assurances, would be reduced to slavery by him. These latter are also called Radjas and are held to be slaves of Boni or of Goach. Mr. Speelman wanted those who fell under Maccassar to belong to the Company, and that they should perform the owed feudal services, but it appears that no use was made of that. The kings of Surekan and Letha, two small realms situated in the west of this region, are in alliance with the Company, the last-named having come over to the Company of his own accord and entered into a very advantageous contract for himself and his country with Mr. Speelman, in the name and on behalf of the Company, which was signed and sworn to on the 26th of August anno 1669 in the presence of the king of Soping, Radja Palacca, Craeng Tanette, Aroe Bacque or Vacque, Arengoera Batangke, and the Touratta kings of Loaija and Bankala. However, Boni says that this very people are his slaves, conquered by Radja Palacca, of which however no evidence has appeared; nevertheless, they actually perform slave services for Boni. The king of Zurekan, named Labinij, was brought inside the castle by Radja Palacca on the 20th of April 1671 and accepted the same alliance that had been made two years earlier with the king of Letha, named Pohalepan, and swore to it on the 27th thereof, in the presence of the king of Soping, Radja Palacca, and the Ternatan Prince Callematta, both being recognized as allies by both Bonians even to the present day. From Macassar, dated 3 May 1760. the Bonaya Contract, ceded to the King of Ternate; however, their High Nobilities subsequently ordered that it should sort under the Macassar Government. In former times, it used to provide us abundantly with coconut oil; but in the year 1730, it was first so tormented by disagreements among the princes, and subsequently by the Mandarese, that all coconut trees were cut down to make sentings, and the country, now as if orphaned, is for a large part subjected to the Mandarese. The kings have not failed to request help from the Company's ministers, and some vessels and men were indeed sent thither with commissioned members from the Political Council; however, our men did not conduct themselves very reputably there, and indeed in such a manner that the King of Palu complained of having requested the help of the Honorable Company. From the report of the then commissioners, it appears that this country is very populous and fertile in paddy; as well as that it yields much gold, and that around Larige situated in the Bay of Tomini one only has to dig four feet into the earth to obtain it. Tourongan, situated inland along the river Boele Poele! Which village, together with eight others belonging to it, is called Wauwo-boele, or the Small Mountains. All of which were free and dependent on no one when, after the conquest of Sombaopu, six of these, namely Tourongan, Manipi-woe-E, Manipi, Balemboeo, Bacoe, and Cabe, were accepted into the alliance upon their urgent request. Subsequently, there also joined the Aru of Tourongan the peoples of Touraaijo, situated behind Gowa against the ascent of the mountains and on the heights; further, of the villages Boele, Bonto Tanne, Saij Seere, Pericgi, and of the mountain Krijndang behind Boele Comba, requesting to be accepted with him under the same alliance, namely that of Bonaya and others entered into with the allies; which was agreed to, these being all places of importance in time of war, 161 From Macassar, dated 3 May 1760. From Macassar, dated 3 May 1760. war, but at present mostly attached to Boni alone; as is also Boele Boele with its dependencies, situated in the Bay of Boni, on and around the river of that name. It has to the west Wauwowolle, to the south the river Kasse, to the north the river Tanka, and to the east the shore in the bay. This region is also called Tello Limpoe. It has three principal villages, namely Boele Boele, Lamanti, and Radja, which are independent of each other. These peoples loyally aided the Macassars before and during the war of 1667, which latter ceded this land and people in the Bonaya Contract; and after the war, it was brought into order by Radja Palacca, and furthermore subsequently governed by His Highness in the name of the Honorable Company as submissive allies, and after his demise remained under Boni, which currently holds and acknowledges it as its own. Although Tourongan and Boele Boele, along with several other free and submissive allies of Boni, such as Sanjai, Sidenreng, Lamuru, Batukeke, etc., have not contracted in writing with the Company, they nevertheless all belong under the Bonaya Contract and that which was concluded with Tallo in July 1669, and they ought in any case to be considered and held as such by us. With which, holding as concluded the essential matters that can be said of the allies on the Coast of Celebes, I proceed to the outlying territories sorting under the Government of Macassar, and first of all to Bouton, which was bound to Ternate by the Ternatan King Baabullah in the year 1580, provided that they had to commemorate the preservation of their freedom yearly through a tribute to the King of Ternate. It seems that after that time, these peoples also respected the Ternatan and adhered to his interests, having indeed been conquered by the Macassars in 1655, but they bought back their freedom for 788 thails of gold. In 1666, they were again attacked with a large force and waged war upon by the Macassars.

From Maccassar dated the 3rd of May 1760. brought to the utmost extremity when the Company's fleet and forces under Mr. Speelman arrived there and relieved them by destroying the Maccassar forces and The year thereafter, or in the year 1667, upon the return of Mr. Speelman from the Eastern Provinces, these peoples concluded the well-known treaty with the Honourable Company and the King of Ternate, and thereafter sent 1000 able-bodied men with 34 vessels together with the Company's forces to Maccassar. This aforementioned contract the people of Bouton maintained only as such, for after the Maccassar war they brought the islands of Pantchiana, on which Tiboore is situated, as well as Calensousoe and Tambouco on the east coast of Celebes, all of which belonged to Ternate, under their authority. In the year 1752 they permitted the Company's ship Rustenwerk to be captured by the pirate Frans Fransz., and that without making any effort toward its recovery; for this reason Their Right Excellencies had a severe correction administered to them in the year 1755 under the command of Captain Jan Casper Rijsweker, about which they, complaining, indeed sought aid and comfort from the King of Boni and the people of Ternate, but having been rebuffed, they have gradually become inclined again toward peace and the observance of the treaties, without however renewing the same up to now or paying the fine imposed upon them. The foreign realms on the island of Sumbauwa, namely Bima, Dompo, Tambora, Sangar, Lapekat, and Sumbauwa, are independent of one another, but bound together through a defensive alliance as far as their possessions on the island of Sumbauwa are concerned, all being special allies of the Honourable Company, whom they have successively accepted as their protector and defender; of which islanders I shall briefly describe the noteworthy matters, beginning with Bima. Its situation, as observed on sea charts, lies at the east end of the island of Sumbauwa and thus mostly south of the west coast of this Celebes, approximately 45 miles, and can with good vessels be navigated back and forth the whole year. It is an island realm, and under it belongs the land and strait of Cappij, the entire Mangarij on the west point of the island of Ende, and furthermore the island of Gunung Api situated roughly just north of Bima. This realm, alongside Dompo, Tambora, and Sangar, was brought under an annual tribute by the Maccassars in the year 1619, and five years thereafter also the realm of Sumbauwa, from which tribute Bima was exempted in the year 1660, partly because its king had allied himself by marriage with that of Maccassar, and partly out of apprehension among the Maccassars that they might engage themselves with the Dutch, since Mr. Truijtman departed thither after the conquest of Panckokan and concluded an oral treaty of friendship with the King of Bima. These above-mentioned princes were summoned in the year 1665 by the Maccassars with their armed forces in order to assist them in the subjugation of Bouton, at which expedition the first four were thus present; who then also, after the conquest of the Maccassar forces there, fell into our hands and were thus transported to the Eastern Provinces and the year thereafter back hither again, where during the war they, in an abominable manner, overwhelmed their assigned vessel, the sloop de Doratus, and murdered all the Dutchmen sailing thereon, fleeing to Maccassar. Upon the making of the peace at Bongaja, it was stipulated that the Maccassars should surrender these kings into our hands, but they allowed them to escape to their lands, from whence the same were likewise demanded in vain by commissioners; which commissioners at that time, or in the year 1668, also had orders to contract further and in writing with Bima, but the regent Turelie Gampo would not agree to it, saying he would abide by the treaty entered into with Truijtman. Mr. Speelman, however, being willing and eager to conclude an alliance with these peoples without sending the Company's militia into that remote land, resolved upon the first notice
