From Maccassar dated 3 May 1760. writing or approval of their high mightinesses to be granted by open letters, the aforesaid annotations concerning the capturing of the Company chaloup the dorateus and concerning the massacring of its servants who had been on board, which also had the desired success that those princes, namely of bima and Dompo, humbled themselves before the Company, and through their envoys, provided with proper credentials, concluded and swore to the contract of 2 8ber 1669. At the same time as to bima, an embassy was also sent to sumbauwa to demand the return of the Bone prince aroe Caijoe, exiled by the Makassarese, and to contract with them; the first was agreed to, but the king maaijs Goa did not want to enter into a contract with the Company without permission from the Makassarese. After this, the exiled Makassarese and other discontented rogues of this land kept these islanders in constant unrest, and among other robberies, helped the discontented grandees of the realm of sumbauwa in the year 1673 against their king maasgoa, dethroning him and robbing him of all his treasures, which were estimated at 500,000 rix-dollars. In the year 1674, a considerable force under Captain Jan fransen Holsteijn was sent to sumbauwa on behalf of the Company with orders to restrain the rebels there, but around which they probably did not succeed, since the rival elected king Maas bantam retained the realm; likewise our force in the year 1675 broke up the palisade erected there called suckelenburg and then constructed the fortress at bima. Through the leaders of our expedition, the kings of Dompo, Tambora, and Papekat were reconciled with one another, at which reconciliation the last-mentioned was first declared a free and independent prince. Still in the same year, the king of sumbauwa also sent his envoys hither, humbled himself before the Company, and made a contract which was signed and sworn to by his highness's envoys (of whom the first in rank had been the principal rebel against maas Goa) on 12 February 1676. From Maccassar dated 3 May 1760. Yet these, as well as all the other overseas princes, very quickly forgot the contents of their treaty and thereby brought a series of disasters upon their land and people, which particularly afflicted bima, Tambara, and sumbauwa, and which ceased with the murder of the Queen of Dompo, the capture and exile of the kings of bima and Tambora, as well as the chasing away and killing of many Makassarese robbers around sumbauwa, after which those of Dompo, Tambora, sangar, and Papekat concluded and swore to a new alliance with the Company on 18 April 1701 (arranged after that of bima and sumbauwa). Concerning these contracts, it should be noted that Mr. Speelman testified that he neglected to clearly stipulate in them that upon the death of the kings, the grandees of the realm may not inaugurate or install another without the prior knowledge and consent of the Company. He believed that the same was sufficiently implied in the article whereby the Company was recognized as their protector and defender, and that it consequently must be held and understood as such; however, those of sumbauwa do not wish to understand it this way. To conclude this, I add here that the princes of bima, Dampo, Tambora, sangar, and Papekat have conducted themselves fairly well after that last alliance, but the ruler of sumbauwa has paid little heed to the contract, being supported in his evil machinations by the Makassarese and Wadjorese residing there, which last-mentioned carry on a heavy navigation and trade there, which extends as far as they dare to venture out to sea with their native vessels. Passir and Coeti, two small realms or prominent trading places situated on the east side of the island of borneo, were conquered by the Makassarese during the reign of the Gowa king ni=gaackanna, and which princes from then on reserved the frequentation of those places solely for themselves and their family, without permitting anyone else, whether subject or ally, to sail thither. The princes of Passier and Coeti were humbled in the year 1686 by the Bone Prince aroe Teko.

From Maccassar, dated 3 May 1760. brought to the King of Boni, Radja Palacca, and by the latter to the Castle, where they were both admitted into the alliance as friends, and whereof an act was granted as proof to the King of Passir by President Willem Haasink, which being here at the Castle from the year 1696 was daily made use of against Dani Mattena, alias Carallng Bonto Rambo, daughter of Chourong, who laid claim to the realm of Passir, which dispute was decided in favor of the King of Passir by the Governor and Council here only two years thereafter. In the year 1725/1728 these small realms were conquered by the exiled Wadjorese Prince and notorious robber Aroe Saenkang, who subsequently became Matoua of Wadjo; but now known under the title of Aroe Paneke, he still retains dominion over the same, these peoples having to pay him an annual tribute. With this the principal matters concerning the distant small allies having also been treated, I shall lastly proceed to the designation and description of the Company's own lands and of the most remarkable events that occurred with respect to the same, beginning with: Castle Rotterdam, situated in the realm of Maccassar, formerly under the jurisdiction of Tello, on the west coast of Celebes, at the 23rd degree, 5 degrees south, 7 minutes, being the chief residence of the Honorable Company here; in the Treaty of Bongaaij it was named Oedjong Pandang, and together with the village and land belonging under it surrendered to the Company. How far the land, or limits, of this Castle extend is shown in no contracts or negotiations; because of this, the Maccassarese to this very day are so arrogant that they wish to limit the same to just slightly outside the town of Vlaardingen with its outer neighborhood north of Kampong Baroe, with the same to the south, and Boutualacq situated to the east of the Castle, having themselves in the time of Governor Loten laid claim to the small village of Manisso, situated a short cannon shot south of this Castle. For although Mr. Speelman states in his Note that the Company's lands extend along the beaches from Sandrabonij up to the River Patingaloang, and inland around this Castle up to the mud pools of Tello, yea, that Goach and Tello themselves have not a foot's breadth of land outside their gates, this nevertheless conflicts with the Treaty of Bongaaij, where these lands along the sea beaches were defined from Toerattea up to Bonaija or Bongaija, and further north of this Castle as far as belongs to the Company by right of conquest. The actual dispute in this, and many other matters between the Honorable Company and the Maccassarese, arose because the Treaty of Bongaaij seems to have remained in full force after the conquest of Samboupo, or rather, because the same was not improved, augmented, or clarified after the changed state of affairs. Mr. Speelman did indeed attempt to determine the limits in his time, but the Maccassarese then said that His Honour could set them as he pleased, for everything was the Company's anyway, and so it remained, while the aforementioned Lord Admiral left this for the eventual settlement of affairs here. Meanwhile the Maccassarese have long since forgotten that saying of theirs, without their having been reminded of such by the successive governors, notwithstanding that the Company after those times has waged war against Maccassar at least three times, each time with the result that one had only to prescribe our lawful demands to them, but it seems that this necessary point was not thought of. The Honorable Company's jurisdiction of this Castle, which is maintained as best as possible, extends from Sambong Java to the so-called Kraal, further around the north along the salt pans behind Bontualaca up to the River Patingaloang, not far from Oedjong Tana. The Northern Provinces comprehend within themselves the lands of Maros with the half-regency of Sodian and Barras or Cabba, Siang, Labaican with Bongera and Sagerie, these plains between Tello and Tanete being the actual granary of the entire Celebes, furthermore the places between these plains and the mountains such as the small place Biras, Bantimoerong, and Malacca, further the mountain villages, to wit: Malawa, Tjamba, Bengo, Tjinrana, Laboeadja, and Laija.

From Maccassar under the date of the 3rd of May 1760 From Maccassar under the date of the 3rd. These lands, bordering directly upon one another, have to the west the sea, to the north Tanete and Mario, to the east Lamoeroe, and to the south the kingdom of Maccassar. The same were all together conquered under the reign of the Maccassarese King Alla oedien, the great-grandfather of Mappa somba, made subservient, and distributed among the Maccassarese grandees by villages and parcels, who enjoyed therefrom, as from their own properties, the tithe of the crops and ordinary corvee labor from the inhabitants until the year 1668, in October, when Maros, during the treaty violations of the Maccassarese, was taken by the allies; but on the 20th of November thereafter it went over to the enemy again, after which those peoples stubbornly continued to adhere to the Maccassarese party until only a few days before the conquest of Samboupo, when that district was brought under subjection by force of arms by our forces and fully conquered, with the consequence that all these further lands and peoples came over to the Company, both through compulsion and of their own free will, and were thoroughly subjugated. However, one finds in the notes of the Honorable Speelman that the province of Labaccan was accepted as an ally, but also at the same time that these peoples later revolted and were brought to obedience by force of arms; and that therefore this district is more of a Company property than that the same should belong under the alliance, according to which position it has then also been counted as subject alongside all the other provinces up to the present day. In the year 1671, those of Tsinrana, Tjambo, Malawa and Bengo not only humbled themselves before the Company, but also on the 18th of January 1672 swore to several articles, whereby they were accepted as subjects of the Honorable Company. In the year 1736/7, when the rebel Bontohancas invaded these northern provinces, all these districts defected, both through compulsion and of their own free will, and even took up arms against the Honorable Company; but when Maros was reconquered in August 1737 by Governor Smout, most of the chiefs immediately returned to their duty, while others took flight, who, having subsequently been overtaken, received their well-deserved punishment. Those who had returned to their duty and other newly appointed chiefs were summoned to the Castle in January 1738, where the guilty who returned received pardon, and then, alongside all the others except Labaccan, renounced the Maccassarese rule forever and thus were accepted again as loyal subjects. Over all these provinces a junior merchant has the subordinate supervision, who holds his residence in the province of Maros, within the palisaded redoubt Valkenburg situated at the village of Soerijerang; to which resident is also subordinate the palisade post in the small kingdom of Tanete on the river Pantjana. Maros has five native regents, who alongside all the others are proposed by the elders of the country from the closest blood of the predecessor to the Governor and Council, who make the election upon approval of the High Government. These regents, their titles according to their land duties, are Loma Maros, Craeng Tanralili, Craeng Simbang, Grand Galarang Bontoa under whom Parras or Cabba also falls, and lastly Grand Galarang Tancoeroe. Over half of Sodian there is also a regent on behalf of the Company who bears the title of Galarang. Siang has a regent who is titled Sombo. Over Labaccan, a Craeng has the authority as regent, under whom, as his small allies of old, belong Craeng Mangalicana and Craeng Malisse; Bongoro is also counted to belong to the same, over which, however, a separate regent has supervision under the title of Craeng. Segeri also has five regents, of which the head is Craeng Mangalong, and furthermore Craeng Marang, Lolo Cloekoea, Craeng Tandellie, and Toema loempoe Sanoentoe. The greatest part of the inhabitants of these plains are Bonians, who are much more diligent in agriculture and horticulture than the Company's subjects. These have their separate chiefs placed over them by the King of Boni, but they, alongside their subjects, are subordinate to the local rulers.

The other districts, situated between these plains and in the mountains, also have their own regents appointed on behalf of the Company, mostly under the title of Caraleng, after the principal villages of their particular subordinate regions, as are mentioned hereinafter. These latter provide the necessary timbers and bamboos for the Company's post at Soerijierang and piles for the pier of the Castle. They all have various Gacarangs or village headmen under them, living quietly and peacefully under their own laws and religion, performing the required necessary statutory labors for the Honorable Company, their lawful master. South of Castle Rotterdam on the western shores of this Celebes, the Company possesses the small districts of Galissong and Zoelembankleng, situated within the proper kingdom of Maccassar between the fishponds of Aing and the river Tjicoa, though having the small kingdom of Sandrebonij between them. These places were won by the sword in the war of 1667; as were also then, and in the year 1668/9, the shores of Banaija, Barombou, Pauekoka, Patto, Sambaupa, and Madjemang; however, these six last-named villages and dependencies have long belonged under Goach, without it being possible to trace when those places were ceded to it, the most probable being already shortly after the war, or that the Company never took possession of them, for one finds noted down that Aing was at that time given in fief to the King of Soping, and that regents were appointed over Galissong and Poelembankeeng without more. The inhabitants of these two regencies are good soldiers, and the Galissongers are also considered the best sailors here, and in these capacities they are obliged to serve the Honorable Company, if necessary, for their board. From Maccassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. the Kijndang mountain range that separates it from Boni, or rather from the mountain peoples of Touraaija, and to the south the sea. This region also belongs among the Company's conquered properties, and thus its peoples are among their lawful subjects, who, alongside those of Bonthain, have the very same obligations and prerogatives as those who inhabit the Northern Provinces. There are two head regents over this region, namely Carareng Gantarang and Caraleng Oedjong Lowe, who have several lesser chiefs under them. The land is fertile in paddy, has good hunting and large forests, but the soil for building houses is of poor quality. In the west monsoon, the roadstead is dangerous for ships, but small vessels can enter at high water into the Calle Koukong river, on or near the mouth of which lies the Company's fine palisaded redoubt Carolina, in which the junior merchant and resident has his abode, and to whom also the oversight of Bira is entrusted, which little realm or region stretches from the river Bangpong eastward along the sea coast to the point of Lassem, and from there northward to the point of Cadjang; inland it borders Boele Comba, Tourongan, and Kadjang, which falls under Boele Boele. The king of this little realm came to submit to the Honorable Company in the time of Mr. Speelman, and accordingly this entire region was ceded to the Company in the Boni Contract. It is a dry and rocky land, and provides its inhabitants with nothing but ubi for food, so that they must obtain their necessity of rice or paddy from Boelecomba and from Bima. It has some forests, which, alongside those of Boelecomba, provide them with reasonably good timber for making prahus, this having been the principal shipyard of the Macassars. The peoples in general are reasonably good soldiers, both on water and on land; the wealthiest among them are traders, and the rest occupy themselves with building vessels and making poor, coarse white cloths from cotton, which still grows abundantly there, and of which they pay a small annual tribute to the Honorable Company. This region has ten regents, of whom Carallng Bina is the principal, and furthermore over Lemo Lemo, Tanna Biro, Bonta Tanga, Ara, Tiro, Langa Langa, Werde Grassing, and Batang; these come up once a year to Castle Rotterdam to deliver their tribute. The island of Salijer lies south of the point of Lassem, about three miles; between the two one finds the Boegeroens, which are small, uninhabited islands. All around Salijer lie several other islands such as Bakeloang, Tammelonge, Polassie, Tanama Hala, Kajohadje, Boueratta, and Calauwt etc., all of which belong under it, and of which the last two mentioned are inhabited; on some of the others reasonably good wood is found, which is, however, not durable. According to the Macassar registers, this island, under the reign of the Macassar king Toema Lari Sieka Kalouna, alongside Boelecomba and Bira, was made tributary to the Macassars; yet Mr. Speelman notes at the same time that according to the statement of the Ternatans, the same was conquered by their king Baab Ullach, and presented to the Macassars as a token of perpetual friendship. Both may go together, but be that as it may, it is certain that the Macassars completely renounced it in the Boni Contract to and on behalf of the king of Ternate. Nevertheless, many of these islanders thereafter still caused a great deal of trouble for the Company, until, having been forced into submission by force of arms, they made an alliance with Mr. Speelman on behalf of the Honorable Company and the king of Ternate, whereby all these island peoples were recognized as subjects and obliged to pay an annual small tribute of cloths and bast to the king of Ternate, and which would be received by the Company's ministers on His Highness's account; besides this, they were also obliged to the requisite corvée labor, and an order was further drafted regarding the expansion of their navigation and trade. This contract was only signed some years later, when the regents declared that they did not know that they had anything to do with the king of Ternate, because this had never been clearly made known to them; therefore they requested to be excused from that which concerned that prince, which was probably later granted to them by Their High Mightinesses upon the proposal of this ministry, for one finds that these islanders have remained with the Company without the interference of the Ternatans. This entire land is hilly, has large forests and many deer; it produces ubi, a root, and batta, a kind of millet, for food; many coarse blue and white striped cloths are made there from indigenous cotton. On behalf of the Honorable Company, a junior merchant is stationed here. 191 Macassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 From From Macassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 Memorandum of affairs, concerning the present state of the Company's interests, to be delivered with regard to the native, ally, subject, as well as otherwise: and regarding which I shall, without taking many detours, according to my humble abilities but to the best of my knowledge and understanding, acquit myself of my duty. Beginning with the so-called Balance between the thrones of Boni and Gowa, which must be maintained here for the security of the Company's lands. Of this I believe that the pointer may always well lean towards the side of Boni. For the reason that this realm, at the time of its very greatest magnitude, was not so much to be feared by the Honourable Company as the Macassars in their humblest state, in which they have found themselves until the present day: All the more because one, in my opinion, may well consider it a firm maxim that just as the Honourable Company obtained its conquests here with and through Boni, and remains established therein to this day, so likewise must the Company maintain its lands and acquired respect here with and through the union with Boni, and keep the balance of all Celebes in equilibrium. At least I will gladly confess that if, which God forbid, Boni were to become unfaithful to the Company, or were brought down by its enemies, I know of no ally who would make any effort for the benefit of the Company. Of this now, as it has appeared to me after careful observation, I must report that this balance, after the last war, has become quite shaken and still remains tottering. Principally because the Wajo people at that time could not be brought to the old treaties, both with the Honourable Company and Boni: and whereby Boni has not only remained stripped of its lands and treasures, but at the same time, together with the Honourable Company, has lost much of its former lustre. On the other hand, Wajo has so Company 193 Macassar under date the 3rd of May 1760. From From Macassar under date the 3rd of May 1760 increased in power and respect that the same is indeed formidable, and is greatly feared among the natives. Now, as long as these Wajo people, as up to now, remain on their own without binding themselves more closely with other allies than before, the balance will, as in the last 19 years, still remain somewhat tottering without tipping over. But when those peoples disturb Boni in its lands, as the collective rulers, except Pammana, have recently begun to do through the reclaiming of the negorij Timoerong, and should they, for the furtherance of their pretensions, only ally anew with the Macassars, their old friends, then this balance will lean quite considerably to the bad side. Yet in this case there would be no other need than an albeit costly, yet here long necessary war: whereby, under God's gracious blessing, the Company's fallen respect among these so-called free Wajo people, and thereby over the whole of Celebes, could quickly be restored. But when these Wajo people, strengthened by the currently very discontented Boni princes, should dethrone the present king of Boni, and choose the prince Aroe Mampoe in his place, as rumours have it, and should they then unite with Boni in order, note bene to the exclusion of the Honourable Company, to maintain somewhat more strictly through a further renewal that old treaty Lamoen Patoea-ri-Timoerong, which the late kings never renewed when Wajo had conquered Boni. Then there will be more difficulty in it, not to preserve the peace, for there is so little danger of that, at least as long as Boni adheres to the contracts, but indeed to bring those of Wajo then to their duty, namely the keeping of the Boni treaty or their contract of 1670, strictly regarding navigation and trade. I know well that the lord Admiral and Commander Smout says in his memorandum that Wajo has promised to adhere to the old contract.

As this, besides from their conduct in this matter, appears most clearly from their latest answers given to Governor Smout and the council in Madjo, which I have added hereafter for Your Honour's speculation, together with and alongside the treaty of Damoen Patoer, because these writings never came to my knowledge at the secretariat or secret archives, the first-mentioned having been fished up not long ago from the antiquated papers of the then chief interpreter; and it is these which have very much confirmed me in my conception of the affairs between the Honourable Company and Boni with Madjo, yea, which have also made me believe that these affairs were never presented as such to Their High Noble Excellencies. Be it enough, under favourable notice, for Your Honour: that for the previously alleged reasons, yet under correction of my own sentiment, I place the Honourable Company's security in the union and good intelligence with Boni, paired with a Behold there, Sir, that which I, regarding the balance according to my bounden duty, thought necessary to set down. Also, this exposition would become too prolix if I were to fatigue Your Honour with a repetition of matters that occurred and were dispatched during my administration, for which reason I refer Your Honour in this to my separate Daily Register, where everything is briefly and furthermore circumstantial enough made known by my separate humble letters to the Honourable Supreme Indian Government, and which papers Your Honour will please peruse for further service, as well as the replies received from the aforementioned Their Honours. Thus I shall in this, besides the aforesaid, restrict myself solely to a short and factual instruction of that which according to the present circumstances of time and matters has been done, averted, and in the sequel ought to be taken into consideration. To turn this only according to their own desire, the Empire and Court of Boni, stripped of its treasures and jewels by the last war, and one may well add of a great part of its former prestige, is and remains weakened. This, and the continuous vexation which the Boniers who border on Wadjo suffer from the rebellious gang of the old Matoa of Wadjo, Aroe Ponke, makes the grandees of the empire who reside in the interior lands discontented against their king; the more so because he, upon their repeated instances, does not sufficiently maintain his subjects against their oppressors; but in addition comes that many grandees and, according to the rumours, especially Aroe Mai-poe, are very dissatisfied that the king, according to their saying, without prior knowledge and consent of the grandees of the empire, has pardoned Lacasie or Aroe Tha and given him the principal and best office at the court. 201 From Makassar under date 3 May 1760 From Makassar under date 3 May 1760: To redress this, they desire that the king shall betake himself to the interior lands; but His Highness is of the opinion that they will make life so unpleasant for him that he would find death there or at least the end of his reign, unless the Honourable Company supported him with such a force whereby he could not only bring the ill-disposed Boniers to their duty, but at the same time liberate the entire country from the domination or violences of the Wadjorese. Hence it was that the Regent and the court grandees at Bontoala recently asked His Highness so earnestly how matters stood with the Honourable Company, and whether they might no longer hope for its assistance as formerly; see the separate Daily Register under 19 September and 31 October of the past year, where this and that together with my answer and treatment is mentioned at large. His Highness is now advanced in years and for the most part destitute of that magnanimous fire which is required in so great a personage, and thereby is soon dejected and terrified at the least adversity or evil rumours, knowing his impotence to attack Wadjo without the effective help of the Honourable Company. For this reason he has, just before the grandees of the empire gave me solemn notice on 18 September last that they would bring the king to the interior lands, earnestly requested me to prevent his departure from here in order to prevent many evils. This I have also done, or at least suspended the same for so long until the envoys of Boni and Soppeng should have returned from Batavia, at which time this, upon a further application of the court grandees, if the king himself does not urge it with earnestness, should again be postponed, for reasons that, the present juncture lasting, the king cannot possibly give any satisfaction to the grandees of the empire being in the interior without causing detriment to the Company's interests, inasmuch as the Wadjo-minded Boni princes appear to have the upper hand there.

Also it would be no worrisome matter for Your Honour if this ruler came to his end in the inland regions, at least then there was danger that the Bonians, to the detriment of the Company's interests here, would choose Aroe Palacca, the grandmother of the present king of Goach, as their queen, whereby Boni and Goach could very quickly come under one head. Against this, serious action now needs to be taken, which I have also done from the beginning of my administration and have cared as much as possible for the best apparent succession, and have brought it so far that the king has repeatedly promised me under a handshake that he would name Aroe Champoe, a son of His Highness's half-brother Topawawoi, also called Aroe Mampoe and afterwards Caraleng Jessie, as his successor. This Their High Noble Excellencies have been pleased to approve by separate letter of 31: December 1757, and to order me upon the decease of the present king to have him, Mampoe, proclaimed to that dignity, with the recommendation to observe all caution and secrecy in this, which indeed is of the highest necessity. However, it appears to me from the Batavia translation of the said king's letter written to the Honourable High Indian Government as if he has flattered his son Lakasie, formerly Aroe Tha, with the succession, perhaps in order thereby to encourage him to a better way of life. Notwithstanding this, I must add here for Your Honour's notice that the copy of that letter, brought to me to read after it was dispatched, read somewhat differently, for therein, with respect to the succession, mention was made not of Lakasie in particular, but indeed of his children in general, which therefore caused some speculation in my mind, the more so because this Lakasie around that time became Pengauwa or lord of the land, and that precisely this promotion made Aroe Mampoe, as the Bonians say, faint-hearted, but in Dutch phrasing, discontented with the king. Meanwhile, I have until now not been able to persuade the king to have this Mampoe declared Young King or successor to the realm, because according to His Highness's claim, doing so would still cause too much jealousy among his sons, but as I thought, especially with Aroe Palacca. That the king has now not dealt in good faith with me in this, or rather that he has changed his plan since the pardon granted to his son Lakasie, would not seem entirely strange to me. For though I believe of His Highness that he is the most well-disposed prince of all Celebes, and also the most obliged to the Company, he is nevertheless well known to be very reserved, not only with and concerning us, but he even never dares to come out plainly for the Company's interests either outside or inside his court, and constantly seeks, even with the ill-disposed, to remain the good man. His Highness has in the most recent past year made his testament, which cost me quite some effort to arrange in such a manner that the Honourable Company would suffer no disadvantage after the king's decease. However, when Their High Nobles approve a new election, as according to custom, they will be able to make such arrangements concerning all these matters de novo as they shall find appropriate according to their high wisdom. Were it up to us, I would, if the election fell upon Aroe Mampoe or a loyal Bonian, and provided that all matters could be settled to satisfaction, give everything back until further notice, except for such paddy fields as have been taken from our subjects; and with regard to Boneratte and Calaumt, that first a good contract were concluded, whereby the King bound himself under oath to ensure according to his ability that no vessels sail to or from there without a pass from the Company or the King, according to the terms of the Bonian alliance; and that the Bonian regents there were also brought under the same oath. These Panis's two sons, named Lasapo, currently Aroe Mario Boni, and Aroe Tanette Mattoa, one of the Aroe Pitoes, are also considered loyal Bonians and thus also Aroe Mampoe is, according to tradition and as it has also appeared to me, a well-disposed and the bravest prince of all Boni, thus quite recommendable for the succession of the realm, although not as legitimate as the Princess Palacca, and having been fathered by a mother of lower birth, though established through a marriage according to the country's custom. From Maccassar under date 3 May 1760 between the courts of Boni and Gowa Because of the daily occurring disputes, claims, and lawsuits between Bonians or Macassars and subjects, I deem myself obliged to advise Your Honour not to allow any verdict to be pronounced until after Your Honour shall have found that the matter in question is clear and evident; for those that are obscure, Your Honour may with peace of mind leave to the country customs. In the meantime, with regard to the disputes over paddy fields and the dwelling of the peoples in general, a certain Convention between President Hartzing and the old Radja Palacca comes in very useful, wherein they resolved that both subject and Bonian who had lived peacefully for ten years under either one would belong to that one under whose jurisdiction he then found himself, and that the paddy fields which were not properly maintained through neglect or incapacity of the Bonians could not be claimed again after the lapse of three years: in No. 7: the 21st section in the secret chest. Furthermore, let Your Honour remember that a certain Palembang prince named Pangerang Poetar, who resides at Bontualacq and sometimes at Maros, in accordance with Their High Excellencies' honoured order by letter of 30 December 1757, may not depart elsewhere without Your Honour's foreknowledge, and that the King of Boni has agreed to keep him with him, as well as to observe the orders of Their well-mentioned High Excellencies, see separate. Under this article it also serves for Your Honour's information in due course that on 28 June 1757 I settled the disputes with the King of Boni concerning the fields at Teko situated near Boelecomba, see separate daily register, but that the Regent revived this claim a year later, which was then pursued de novo by the King, notwithstanding that I clearly reminded that prince when and how this matter was decided between the two of us, yet His Highness then seemed to know nothing of it. Since the origin, progress, and end of the previous troubles concerning the election are fully known to Your Honour, though recorded per memoire in outgoing separate letters of the year 1758/9, furthermore appearing in secret resolutions and the separate daily register, from which last of the mentioned letters Your Honour will be able to observe that we already feared at that time that some new troubles would arise in the interior due to the clandestine departure of Aroe Pandjilie to Mario Riwama. In order to prevent these, I sent the Company's first emissary Daeng Manganro with my friendly request to the aforesaid Pandjilie; and, strengthened with a letter from his father-in-law Careeng Barombong, had him exhorted, though in vain, to return hither. For he left the answer to my request to the Marians, and these gave as their reason that they were very afraid that those of Soppeng would attack them as soon as Aroe Pandjilie left them. However, Pandjilie added to this that he was very surprised that his brother the King troubled the Governor so much, since he until now nothing.

While it seems to me that the same, being planned with prudence, would also succeed, if only because that king would then have the honor of seeing his nine banners complete, and that itself would settle the arrangement concerning mutual subjects and the right to cultivate the paddy fields. Nor could one fail on such an occasion to investigate whether it might be possible to satisfy the desire of their High Noble Lordships expressed in separate letter regarding the baceleteeren, the more so if the Company's ministers were only to keep their eyes fixed upon the main point, namely the free possession of that land, to the reduction of many smuggling practices in and around the rivers of Goach and Tello. I believe that it would be good, though only to prevent worse evil, for your Honour to cultivate friendship with him, while I do not doubt that after my departure he will indeed appear again at the Castle and before your Honour. His companion Caraeeng Parangi, who has been taken under the Company's protection with them, has given me no reason for discontent; but if I view the course of life and actions of both these fellows regarding the Honourable Company in an unflattering mirror, so to speak, then I must testify that little honesty is found in their sentiments: see concerning both only the memorandum of Governor Smout. Caroeeng Barombong is likewise a true-natured Macassar who served under the banner of Bontolancas, and the last of that company and submission. I might sometimes have taken a stricter course with these fellows, especially with Aroe pantjana: but have noted that one should not act here precisely according to the strictness of the laws with the young princes in general, so long as it can somewhat pass muster, if one does not wish to see them burst out into the utmost malice: whereas otherwise, according to many examples, the hope still remains that around their 30: year of age they will settle down and even some of them will become inclined toward virtue. This king and thirty mantries or councillors of state, of which the government there consists, have now for two years behaved as if all outstanding disputes were already settled. The king Sacke Oedien, during whose reign the Boutonese were chastised by order of Their High Excellencies, passed away recently, or at the end of last year. In accordance with the custom of this country, a certain Reeppi Gedien, son of Sacke Oedien, was chosen as king in the deceased's place shortly thereafter, whereof proper notice was given to this ministry by a missive and an envoy, with the addition that the dispatch of ambassadors to Batavia had been delayed due to the illness of the deceased sultan. When these peoples might arrive here for such a purpose, which I would not deem strange, it will also be necessary that Your Honour be fortified with positive orders from Their High Excellencies as to whether to employ some or no mitigation regarding the satisfaction imposed upon them on account of the capture of the vessel Rustenwerk by the pirate Frans Fransen. For the article concerning the construction of a fortress, against which they are opposed, can only be clarified according to the intention, but not rejected, since this very matter appears as an essential provision in almost all contracts. In January last, upon the return dispatch of the ordinary dispatch-riders, we wrote to the king and mantries that we accepted their notification provisionally as a communication. We have at the same time amicably admonished them to remember the 7th article of the contract, and that by virtue thereof we earnestly recommended them to send their ambassadors, men of respectability, hither in order, while requesting approval of the succession, to renew and take oath upon that treaty. However, of all this no communication has as yet been made to us on behalf of this kingdom. With the King of Dompo, resident Tinne has complained that he indulges very heavily in madas, and that because of this, as well as through bad government, many of his subjects desert. Against this, the ordinary initial remedies have been applied in our outgoing letter of 25 September last, in the hope that it will help, as otherwise a change in the government there will become necessary. From Tambora, we recently received a letter from the King through emissaries, in which he complains that his claim to 64 of his subjects against those of Papekat has once again been denied. I say again, because that matter was already decided in the year 1749 in favor of the people of Papekat. But since the Tambora prince, upon my arrival here, requested me with so much earnestness to have this matter further investigated, claiming that the justice of his demand was based on a certain separate convention between Tambora and Papekat, I ordered resident Burggraaf to have these Tambora and Papekat disputes further investigated in a combined meeting of the princes from across the strait. This then took effect in the latter part of 1757, with the outcome that the King of Tambora was once again denied his claim and the subjects in question were again assigned to those of Papekat. That which the ministers in former years actually aimed at here was to encourage the native in general to the indigo cultivation according to the Coromandel method, and indeed for their own account, and then to deliver that product to the Honourable Company; but this was found not to be possible then, and would not be possible now, not that the native has an aversion to planting or preparing indigo according to this country's manner, but because they generally have a dislike of all novelties, of whatever nature they might be, and because none of them could ever be brought to the idea that this cultivation would bring them more profit than their customary occupation, being the paddy cultivation, or trade.
