All the above-mentioned sales we have passed in our resolutions of 8 May, 21 July, 2 September, 6 November 1760, 13 January, and 20 February of this year, as far as the prices are concerned, although we repeatedly recommended the Factor to dispose of the remainder for cash as soon as possible, even if it were with less advance. Sale of sugar by the Factor to the Governor and how it turned out. However, since he informed us in the month of May of the past year that upon the long insistence of the Governor he had finally been obliged to deliver to the same, under an account of cash payment, 5 cannassers of powdered sugar and one ditto candy, we have left the amount of this sale for the account of the Factor, who nevertheless, after much trouble and running about, finally came into his own, although to obtain this he had to make some expenses out of his own pocket, as can be seen further in our decisions of 8 May 1760 and 13 January of this year. The recently brought arrack api has also been sold. Of the arrack api recently brought by Lapinenburg and Torenvliet, we relinquished on the 3rd of this month 60 leggers to a native named Hiertje, at f 145:12:— per legger, thus giving on each legger a profit of f 84:8:—, or 73 percent, being somewhat less than that of Duijnenburg yielded. Of the debt of the broker and agent at Ahmedabad, nothing has come in to date. Concerning the debt of that former broker Harderdas Doosje and his son and agent Mietalaal, the matter stands just as in the previous year, with not a single penny of the f 5850:2:— that they owe the Company having come in to date of this, and it now remains to be seen whether the extreme measure—which we, seeing no other chance to help the Company to its own, permitted the Factor to use by letter of 8 March last, if he judges it practicable—will yield anything. What has been resolved regarding its collection. Until that time we have reasonably hesitated to place the affair of these people into the hands of the regents, From Surat, 10 April 1761. both because their total ruin would have to follow upon it, and because someone doing so never obtains full payment, the creditors having to content themselves, according to the custom of the country, with a portion, while the remainder sticks to the hands of the regents and of their servants; but since no other way remains than this ever to get anything of that debt, and according to the proverb half an egg is better than an empty shell, we have finally seen ourselves compelled to proceed thereto, in the hope of then at least getting something, and that Your High Nobilities will kindly please to approve our conduct in this. From those of 17 June and 2 September, Your Right Excellencies, if pleased to do so, will be able to see in detail the poor success of the efforts made by us regarding the Tetterawisas upon which the Ahmedabad chintz for the Fatherland is printed, to have them manufactured according to the requirement of the Lords Directors, and that we were finally obliged, because of the plausible reasons the suppliers were able to give us, to abandon our intention and allow the delivery of those cloths to continue on the old sample, as was reported more broadly in the reply to the demand. Having deliberated at our meeting of 20 October concerning the manufacturing of the chintz required for Japan, of which no sample is found at this office, our greatest embarrassment consisted in the selection of the textile that ought to be used for it, since the sort of cloth was nowhere noted. For which reason, for causes stated in the resolution of that date, we provisionally had manufactured from each of the received samples 5 pieces on Dorogesjes of 16, and just as many on Spodogeljses of 18 wiese, of which we shall have the honor to offer Your Right Excellencies 4 of each sample and sort of textile, and thus 48 pieces of 16 and 48 pieces of 18 wiese, or together 96 pieces, by the ship Torenvliet, in order to be provided with your honored orders and remarks concerning the one and the other by the first ship in the coming autumn, whereupon, one of those two sorts of textiles or else another being chosen by Your Right Excellencies, we hope to be in a position to fulfill those chintzes completely with the last consignment of the other returns recently demanded for India. Awaiting orders from Your Right Excellencies in this regard. Meanwhile, we already contracted the price of the same on the aforementioned date, namely those of 18 wiese including the preparation at 145 rupees or 172:10 guilders, and those of 16 wiese for 90 rupees or 135 guilders per corge. The parcel of Chelasses for the Fatherland, presented for acceptance by the suppliers on 10 November according to sample number 10, not having been able to match the sample on account of its poor quality, was rejected by us at first, and we gave those cloths back to them on condition of delivering others and better ones in their place in good time and before the departure of the first ship, or else submitting, in default thereof, to having the amount of that item deducted upon settlement with interest at 4 percent per month. But however much they seemed to oppose this last condition, they must nevertheless have been convinced of its fairness, since a few days thereafter they presented other and better ones at the bazaar, which we also accepted. The goods that were contracted at Broach have been completely delivered in quantity, but how the same turned out in quality we shall not specify here in order not to take up Your Right Excellencies' attention, as this can be seen amply in our resolutions of 18 November and 16 December 1760, and also of 24 January and 20 February of this year, but we will simply say that the improvement observed in the first received did not continue to the end, for reasons given in the servants' letter of 11 February last. Of what the repairs consist: we cannot yet properly estimate the costs to Your Honour, because, as work progresses, daily more and greater defects are discovered, which all too well justify our apprehension of a sudden collapse. But as far as the plastering of the entire wall from one end to the other is concerned, the same would amount to circa ƒ 9000:—:— The great wheel of the enclosed well: The Great Water Well directly in front of the Company's old lodge, which must supply it with the necessary water, according to the report of special commissioners having become so aged and dilapidated that no repairs could help it any longer, and as appears from what was noted in our resolution of 20 February, it being of a very dangerous consequence not to keep that well constantly in a fully usable state, so that it can be used again, we could not avoid resolving upon its renewal and further necessary repair. This has since been carried into effect, and we approved the specification submitted thereof amounting to ƒ 639:13:8 on the 3rd of this month, although it amounts to ƒ 59:7:8 more than was calculated in the aforesaid report; this difference originating principally from an erroneous entry in the report regarding the day wages, because therein the day wage of ordinary house carpenters was set instead of those whose specific trade it is to make such wheels and who earn a higher day wage. At Ahmedabad, on the necessary repairs of the Company's own lodge, dwelling houses, and warehouses, ƒ 334:10:— was expended, or ƒ 564:19:8 less than the year before, and on repairing the roofs and relaying the tiles, ƒ 237:5:8, or ƒ 29:13:— less than in 1758/9; thus these expenses at that office in total amounted to ƒ 571:15:8, or ƒ 594:12:8 less than in the previous financial year; wherefore we also approved the specifications sent over thereof on 2 September. Emoluments due to the Honorable books of this directorship former Warehouse Master commissioners for the examination of the trade books on the 20th of February, agreed to have provided in kind here to the authorized agents of the Right Honorable Councillor Extraordinary and former Director of Souratta, Louis Taillefert, the 223 1/3 cans of arrack still due to him here as an emolument, and to have the costs thereof written off to previous years' charges and expenses. To the Factor at Amed-Abaad, we permitted on the 2nd of September to write off in his trade booklets the percentage granted to him on the expired quantity of candy sugar from previous years. Likewise, on the ultimate of January, validated to the Brootchia servants f 3. 4.- which they provided in subsistence money or daily allowances to two couriers returning from Bengal. We resolved on that day to have new hoops put on those that are worth the trouble, and to restore the rest, as well as the cabinet in which they belong, as well as possible. And whereas since the relocation of the secretariat to the shipyard there has been no cabinet to store the secret papers, which in the lodge used to be kept in a small cabinet specially built into the wall, but since then had to be placed in a small chest belonging to a private individual, we resolved on the 9th of the past month to have a well-made cabinet specially constructed for that purpose in order to properly keep those papers. Upon examining the weights used at the trade warehouses, 61 pieces of fifty-pounders were culled out by the committee members, and the others, which differed only slightly, having been equalized by the addition of iron rings, we sent the aforementioned 61 pieces, along with 6 pieces of old standard or test weights, to Batavia with the bearer of this letter, at the disposal of Your Right Excellencies. Because the sugar and alum stored in the interior Pattrij number 1 reasonably caused us to fear severe drainage due to the already abundant rainfall, and preferring rather to incur some expenses while there was still time to secure those goods in a place where they would not so easily run the risk of water damage, rather than to save some expenses and run the risk of seeing them melt away and spoil, just as in the autumn of 1750, we agreed in the session of 21 July, because the Company warehouses were full and no space remained to store those voluminous wares therein, to rent a suitable warehouse in the city and immediately have the aforementioned goods transferred into a rented warehouse. On the same day, the said servant also took the annual oath of purge regarding the spices in our assembly. And the pay bookkeeper Philip Wargaren and warehouse master Martinus Johan Bosman stood surety for 12000 florins on behalf of the equipment supervisor Matthijs Clinckaert Junior with respect to his assumed administration. Upon an account submitted by the dispenser of the percentage that is due to him according to the regulations on the provisions purchased into stock and successively delivered to the ships Het Hof d'Uno, De Waakzaamheid, Cattendijke, and Lekkerland, we resolved on 7 October to have the amount of 118 florins and 13 stivers paid out to him from the treasury. The former equipment master Falck having been ordered in 1756 to have gun carriages made for all the cannon at the shipyard insofar as they stood on naval carriages, but this work having been hindered at that time by the Moorish government, and the natives employed therein having been seized, taken to the durbar, and forbidden under severe penalty from laying hands on that work any further, so that it remained incomplete, we therefore, on the aforementioned day, on the occasion of the completed transfer of that servant and the handover of the pieces manufactured during that time consisting of 4 pieces of gun carriages for 12-pounders fully assembled, 2 wheels without ironwork, 8 axles, 10 bushings, 30 loose bands, and 8 cramps, of which the total ironwork weighs 223 pounds, thought fit to have the same entered into the books and to validate the cost thereof amounting according to the specification to 682 florins and 13 stivers to the said Falck, as well as to have the unfinished gun carriages, which otherwise can be of no use, completed without making any other or new ones. The new price current for the current year, which differs from that of the previous year only regarding a few items that are set slightly lower this year, was established by us in the session of 13 January. The warehouse master Bosman having included in his specification at the end of December an item of 58 florins and 18 stivers for 13 days of extra board allowance at 1 florin and 10 stivers per head granted to 3 persons, namely 2 special commissioners and one of his assistants, who were at the roadstead for that many days during the weighing and loading of the spices on board the ship Duijnenburg. From Souratta the 10th of April 1761. His Highness invites the Company to that end; some points of proposal presented for Your Right Excellencies' approval. The Raja of Kutch anew for trade. We therefore demanded a written accounting from that servant regarding this matter, who satisfied us in that regard, so that we have since replied to that debtor again, as Your Right Excellencies may, if pleased, observe all this in more detail in our resolutions of the 31st of January and the 20th of February, our last letter being also attached to the accompanying translations. For the sake of brevity, we must also refer to these last regarding a very friendly letter written by the Raja of Kutch to the first-undersigned, in which he, among other things, invites the Company to re-establish the lodge at Kutch-Mandvi. It would weary Your Right Excellencies to see detailed here all the reasons and considerations that moved us on the 31st of January to draft some points to be proposed to that prince, wherein the articles over which disputes formerly arose and which were ultimately the cause of the breaking up of that lodge have not been forgotten, in order thus, in case of re-establishment, to cut off all avenues to new differences of that nature and to conduct trade in peace, of which proposed points we have the honor to offer Your Right Excellencies a copy among the annexes for approval.

From Surat, 10 April 1761 Requests for the restoration of the trading post there. The excuse of the Ahmedabad broker regarding their arrears to the Company. We reconsidered this paper with the requisite attention at the session of 9 March and sent it to the said Raja alongside a friendly letter, which is also found among the translations, and we now await his reply. What we have done in this matter we hope will not appear displeasing to Your High Excellencies, the more so because everything took place only provisionally and under the express reservation of your highly esteemed approval, and consequently binds to nothing, while manifestly tending to the advancement of the Company's interests within this Directorate, in case Your High Excellencies might see fit to favor us so far as to approve the restoration of that trading post. The Ahmedabad broker and his son, in order to excuse their arrears to the Company, having submitted an entire list of people from whom they say they still have money coming, of whom by far the most are natives, and of the Company servants involved therein none being here anymore except the bookkeeper and former second there, Frans Bernhard Zimmerman, we have, following the tenor of our resolution of 8 May of last year, dismissed the claim with regard to the former, but demanded a written explanation from Zimmerman. This was delivered at our session of the 23rd of the same month and clearly demonstrated that that claim was falsely attributed to him in bad faith by the said natives. Notwithstanding that it was found frivolous, we sent a copy of that paper to the factor in order to present its contents to the business manager, so that he might answer it item by item. But this answer being found just as frivolous and unfounded as the claim itself, we acquitted the said Zimmerman from payment by resolution of 2 September. The newly arrived Governor and Quart Collector at Ahmedabad each wrote separately to the commander and both invited the Company, with pompous promises, to resume the languishing trade at that place. Wherefore it was decided on 20 February to answer them as can be seen in the translations. And this opportunity was used to insist on the fulfillment of the promises made several times regarding the restitution of the 2162 guilders extorted on the way from the leaders of the caravans in the years 1758 and 1759, and the factor was ordered to second this solicitation. As far as the correspondence with the other Western trading posts is concerned, the same has been maintained back and forth as usual according to order. And from Ceylon we received in February last, at the same time, an original and duplicate requisition for necessities dated at Colombo 27 November, at the head of which it is stated that the petitioned goods there are urgently required for the book year 1761. But since we have no opportunity to satisfy it, we must leave it deferred until the coming month of December. We must act likewise regarding a requisition for sealing wax received from Malabar, at which time we will also comply with the order contained in Your High Excellencies' most respected letter of 18 October 1760 regarding all linens being collected here for the Netherlands. For the rest, we only note here that the Cochin ministers communicated to us by their letter of 15 January last that during the past trading season they sold powder sugar at 76 and candy sugar at 60 percent advance. Upon which we take the liberty to remark that, since candy sugar in the past year 1760 was sold here with much greater profit, namely from 95½ to 100 percent etc., and at the latest sale of the cargoes of Lapinenburg and Thorenvliet yielded 106¼ percent etc., it must be very easy for our competitors here in Surat
