From Surat 16 December 1761 No 1399 Coins Likewise as at Surat Ahmedabad Weights are equal to Surat except that the maund of 40 seers there weighs 42 seers of Surat or 36½ lb, with which are weighed all merchandise, grains, fruits, and other necessities of life. Measures The Ahmedabad gaz is as of today a little smaller than the Broach bazaar gaz, and with it are measured all linens and manufactures without distinction. Gold coins are not current here, except only the mohurs, whose exchange rate is uncertain, although generally amounting to 15 silver per one gold rupee; ducats are seldom seen there, and the same, like all other coins minted outside Gujarat, are negotiated only as gold according to weight and alloy. Silver From Surat 1 December 1762 Silver 1 silver rupee, whether of Ahmedabad or Surat, amounts there likewise to 1 florin 10 or 16 annas, and 1 anna to 30 penningen. The copper paise fluctuate there likewise up and down from 38 to 42 or more to a rupee. Agra Weights There the maunds are of 54 single seers of Surat, or 46 3/8 lb Dutch, with which most goods are weighed there. However, indigo was negotiated by maunds of 40 seers at the weight of 30 paise each, with an allowance of 1 seer under the name of Barket on every maund, which thus actually makes 41 equal seers; and this is all that could be ascertained with certainty concerning this place. Bombay Weights Heavy weight 1 Bombay seer weighs 14 2/7 Dutch ounces 1 maund is 40 seers, or 35 1/17 pounds 1 Candy From Surat 16 December 1768 §: 211 1 Candy at 20 maunds or 703 2/3 Dutch pounds. However, for weighing all kinds of merchandise, the English have introduced a maund of 28 English or 25 3/8 Dutch pounds; but grains are not weighed there, but sold by measures. Gold and silver weight 6 chauks make one Bombay grain 1 val: 2½ grains 1 tola: 40 vals 32 tolas: 12 troy ounces [illegible] vals Measures 1 Farra, of which 10 go into a Surat candy of 690 lb, thus each Farra containing 69 lb or 2 maunds of 34½ lb; and the liquid measure called Paili, of which there are 20 to a Farra, amounts to 4 Surat seers or 3½ Dutch lb; these serve only for grains. Velvet fabrics and other European manufactures are measured with the English yard of 1 1/3 Surat gaz, but linens and other Indian piece goods are measured with the gaz. Coins Regarding the gold, it is situated just the same as From Surat 16 December 1761 as in Surat, although the exchange rate now and then differs slightly between the 2 places; as also regarding the silver, the Surat rupee circulating there, as well as the Bombay one, against 30 stuivers according to our calculation. Also current there is a coin of lead mixed with spelter, called Bazaruccos by the Portuguese, but named Pice by the English, of which 80 go to a rupee. Bassein Weights Heavy weight 1 Candy is 20 maunds Katcha or 10 maunds Pacca; each maund of 29 seers or 24 lb Dutch, with which all merchandise, none excepted, is weighed. Gold, silver, and pearl weight Equal to Surat. Measures Grains are measured there, just as at Bombay, by Farras and Pailis, and are there of the same size. Also European and Indian piece goods are Po 2 13 From Surat 16 December 1761 goods likewise bought and sold by yards and gaz, the gaz there being of the same size as at Bombay. Ducats and kind and gold rupees are said to follow there approximately the Surat exchange rate, rising and falling according to whether much or little of those specie or other gold is imported. Silver and other coins Bombay and Surat rupees are most current there and can always be spent without loss; but one also sees a kind of rupees called Kalyan Sikka, meaning as much as Kalyan coin, which are of a lower alloy and therefore cannot be exchanged against Surat or Bombay ones except with a discount of 2 to 3 percent, Kalyan being a place not far from Bassein, where they were minted when that city was still under Moorish rule. Also circulating there are the Bazaruccos, which are minted both here and at Bombay at the same price as on those islands. Coins Gold Danda From Surat 16 December 1768 Danda Rajpuri Weights Heavy weight All heavy goods are generally weighed on the bazaar or market with 1 Maund of 40 light seers, making 26 1/3 Surat seers or 23½ Dutch lb; thus 1 seer does 1/3 Surat seer or 9½ Dutch ounces. However, in case of wholesale trade, the goods are weighed in and out with the same weights as in Surat, except that paddy or rice in the husk is bought and sold by candies of 28 Surat maunds or 966 Dutch lb; but the remaining grains by measures. The gold, silver, and pearl weight is equal to Surat. Measures Broadcloth and other woolen fabrics are measured by yards or English ells of 13/16 Dutch, but all other piece goods, whether silk or cotton, are sold by covids of 18 inches, or by Surat gaz. Gold coins Mohurs or gold rupees go there from 14¾ to 2 15 From Surat 16 December 1761 to 15¼ silver Surat or Bombay rupees a piece, but those minted in Surat generally fetch ¼ rupee or more above the others. Silver rupees without distinction fetch 52 to 60 copper paise; however, when one exchanges Surat or Bombay rupees for Deccani or others, one receives for 103 to 105 pieces of these latter only 100 of the first-mentioned two kinds; although otherwise when exchanging into paise, the foreign rupees, even if of higher alloy or heavier, as said, likewise fetch only 52 to 60 paise. The copper paisa fetches 48 cowries, regardless of whether they are Maldivian, Mozambican, or others. Pune Weights There the same weights as at Bassein and Bombay are in use; however, grains are sold by weight, just as at Surat, and not by measure. Copper Measures 2

From Surat 16 December 1761 Measures Equal to Bahrain and Bombay Coins Equal to Danda Rajpuri The kingdoms of Kutch and Halar Heavy weight 1 Candy is 20 maunds each maund of 48 single or light seers making 28 lb. thus a candy makes 960 seers or 560 lb there being no reckoning there by pucca or heavy seers or maunds There are four kinds of maunds such as 1 maund of 48 seers with which in general all merchandise is weighed with the exception of those which are specified below amounting in Dutch weight to 28 lb — of 49 1/5 — or 29- lb with which solely cloves are weighed 1 — of 43½ — of 25¾ lb which is used for ghee or melted butter and oil 1 — of 52 — — of 30½ lb with which cotton is weighed 171 3/5 seers weigh 100 lb and thus 1½ seer 1 lb Gold silver jewel and pearl weight Equal to Surat while but Measures 1 Page 217 From Surat 16 December 1761 Measures the grains are not weighed here but measured in Kutch with 1 measure which is called Patti and in Halar with Palies The patti is reckoned to hold fully 1 lb of rice and the palie fully 2¼ lb of rice; And to The Honorable David Kelly, Merchant, Second and Head Administrator, as well as President, together with The further Members and the Honorable Council of Justice of the Factory of Souratta, submitted through Claim in default drawn up by Master Gerbrand De Jonge, Fiscaal there, ratione officii plaintiff and petitioner of summonses in person and by edict, against Francinus Angely van Hoogstraten, provisional assistant, Jan Hendrik Smit of Rotterdam, smith, Johann Christian Richter of Dessau, corporal, Pieter Jansz Groenewout of Groningen, sailor, Jan Zeeman of Brussels, Jan van Durp of Volkeren, Hans Michiel Smit of Basel, Anthony Maritinus of Tournai, Frans Comt of Switzerland, soldiers, all having once been appointed in the Honorable Company's service, defendants in person and thereafter summonsed by edict, now absconders and defaulters. Article 1 In order to comply with the honored resolution of the High Indian Government of 20 August 1753 regarding the manners of proceeding against persons found absent at the outer factories, the ratione officii plaintiff approached Your Honors on 1 June of this year, and having made known that since the first of May 1760 until the 15th of the month of June 1761, persons who had been in the service of the Honorable Company, both of the sea service and the military, were found absent, as appeared by the extract of the pay bookkeeper Theodorus Johann Drubbe submitted at that time alongside the aforementioned petition, requested that against those persons found absent a general summons in person might be granted, to the end of appearing before Your Honorable court of justice on a certain day to be determined, and there to hear such motion or motions as the present ratione officii plaintiff would wish to make on that day, and further to answer regarding their absence, under penalty as mentioned in the aforementioned petition. Which request Your Honors, being in conformity with the abovementioned resolution, then also granted to the ratione officii petitioner, now plaintiff. Article 14 Evident by the production submitted in this matter under Letter C. And the present absconders and defaulters were also, by virtue of the said ruling, summonsed in person and to the end aforesaid for 28 July of this year, yet on the appointed day did not appear; wherefore the ratione officii plaintiff, also in accordance with the named orders, requested against them, defendants in person, now absconders and defaulters, and also obtained from Your Honors, default; and for the benefit of the same, bodily arrest, with authorization to make summonses by edict under the tolling of the bell, if the said defendants in person could not be overtaken and brought into custody, as Your Honors can see this from the minute entered in this matter under the Letter D. Subsequently, there being no possibility to bring the present absconders and defaulters, nay even not one of the same, into custody, those delinquents were summonsed up to three different times by edict under the tolling of the bell and with the affixing of placards; yet repeatedly failing to appear, Your Honors successively granted three defaults against the said absconders, and for the benefit of the third, admitted the ratione officii plaintiff to serve next with a Claim in default, as well as authorized the same to make a fourth summons by edict and superabundantly, to the end of seeing served the Claim in default with the verifications thereof and to hear sentence, evident by the minutes of 11 and 25 August, item 8 September last, placed on the inventory under the Letter E, in the second and third place. Upon which fourth summons, likewise as before, no one appeared, and consequently the fourth default was granted by Your Honors; after which the ratione officii plaintiff, now serving with the Claim in default, has the honor briefly to bring to Your Honors' attention: First, that by the extract of the pay bookkeeper Theodorus Johan Drubbe annexed hereto under the Letter B, it clearly appears that the present absconders and defaulters have successively absented themselves from the service of the Honorable Company without having returned under the same in so long a time, and that therefore in this matter the crime of desertion is sufficiently evident; Item, secondly and lastly, that the minutes cited above under Letters D and E, Number 2nd and 3rd place, very clearly demonstrate that the absconders and defaulters have been summonsed in conformity with the often mentioned order of 20 August 1753, and none of them has appeared upon all those summonses; wherefore the ratione officii plaintiff also believes to be able very safely to conclude in this matter for banishment under penalty of heavier punishment, or specifically under penalty of such punishment as Your Honors, on the grounds of the edict of 11 August 1698 issued against runaways, as well as by virtue of the 30th article of the general articles of war of their High Mightinesses the States General of the United Netherlands enacted for the East India Company on 2 September 1742, joined with the resolution of the High Indian Government of 20 August 1753 abovementioned, item the 40th article of the military regulations or articles of war for the military in India dated 27 December 1753, shall find to be applicable to the crime in question; as the same then concludes hereby that by virtue and according to the benefit of all the aforesaid defaults, the summoned persons and defaulters shall be deprived of all exceptions, both declinatory, dilatory, and peremptory, as well as

Respectfully shows Master Gerbrand de Jonge, in his capacity as Fiscal of this Directorate, that he, the petitioner of this Directorate, in order to comply with the honored order of the High Indian Government dated 23 August 1753 regarding the manner of proceeding against persons found absent who hold a rank below that of bookkeeper, now addressing himself for that purpose to your Honors, has the honor herewith to exhibit an extract from the pay book of this Directorate, signed by the Pay Bookkeeper Theodorus Johan Drabbe, by which it is evident that since the first of May 1760 until the 15th of June of this year, from this Office and from the ships successively arrived here, nine persons in service, both from the sea service and the militia, have been found absent. And the undersigned considers that regarding the said persons there is strong suspicion that they have in fact deserted and entered the service of some foreign nation, in which case such missing or absent persons, in conformity with the above-mentioned order, must be summoned in person so that they may answer for their absence; thus the petitioner turns to your Honors with the request that against the nine persons found absent, named in the attached extract, a general citation in person may be granted, in order to appear in person before your Honors' bench of justice on a certain peremptory day to be appointed by your Honors, so as then to hear such request or requests as the petitioner shall wish to make in his official capacity on that day, and further to answer for their absence, on penalty, in case of non-appearance, of being held pro confessis et convictis, or guilty of the crime of desertion.
