83. The 9th of March 19. If, therefore, any dispute or difficulties should arise among the Company's European or native servants, the Court, or any of His Highness's servants, shall in no way interfere therewith, but leave the settlement thereof entirely to the Dutch Chief, without granting any assistance or protection to the recalcitrants. 20. When, contrary to all expectation, any of the Company's servants should happen to wrong, molest, insult, or damage any of His Highness's subjects and residents, His Highness shall, in case the complainant should address the Court thereabout, refer or remit them to the Chief of the trading post, who shall be obliged to investigate the matter immediately, provide proper satisfaction, and punish the perpetrator exemplarily according to the findings of the case. On the other hand, if any of His Highness's servants, subjects, or residents should inflict any harm or injury upon any of the Company's European or native servants, His Highness shall, upon complaints made thereabout, cause the required investigation to be made without delay, and the matter being so found, duly punish the guilty party. 21. In case any of the Company's servants, whether European or native, should steal any money or goods, of whatever nature it may be, belonging to the Company or to one of its servants, and had secretly hidden the same with one of His Highness's subjects or residents and concealed himself somewhere within his territory, His Highness shall, upon the request of the Chief, not only make every effort to discover the perpetrator and have him apprehended, but also, once captured, return and deliver him, along with all that he may have taken with him, to the aforesaid Chief, leaving them for the rest to deal with the execution of punishment, as is stated above. 22. Should His Highness see fit to impose any tax, poll tax, or other duty upon his subjects and residents, the Dutch trading post, with all its servants without exception, shall remain free and exempt therefrom, and the Court shall never claim anything more from the Company and its servants than the aforesaid toll. 23. The Company shall be completely free to enlarge or reduce its establishment in Cutch according to the circumstances of the times, to employ such servants there and for as long as it deems fit, to break up completely and depart, or to remain, entirely as it pleases, without ever again being forced by His Highness or on his behalf to have to move suddenly or at an inconvenient time and hour with the entire establishment; but in case it should no longer suit the Company to maintain a trading post in Cutch, it shall be up to it to make such arrangements in that regard as its interest requires, without being disturbed or troubled therein by anyone. 25. Was signed: D Kelli; Whereby it was remarked, as a very extraordinary matter, that whereas usually each sokkel of mace should contain net 154 lb, declaration concerning the received 6 sokkels, according to the declaration of the ordinary commissioners at the trade warehouses, they have weighed gross only from 154½ to 155¼ lb: although the same are invoiced with the full net weight at 924 lb, and the weighing declaration cited therein, instead of 1044 lb, which the aforesaid 6 sokkels should weigh with the tare, states no more than 943 lb gross, from which the gross weight of the delivered six found here differs by only 13¼ lb or 1 1/8 per cent, such that for the tare of the 6 sokkels no more would remain than 3¾ lb, instead of 120 lb at 20 lb each. / .

97. The 24th of March The officers of the ships Kievitsheuvel and the Vrouwe Rebecca Jacoba to represent regarding the calculation of heavy to light money in which they would be charged. To the Honorable, Respected Sir The 24th of March Jan Graboe Senior Merchant and Commander of this place Honorable, Respected, Commanding Sir In conformity with Your Honor's venerated order to investigate how, owing to the ordinary drainage that has taken place, the fairway both within and outside this River is currently situated, and whether the banks and depths have decreased or increased thereby, the undersigned has the honor with all submission humbly to report to Your Honor: That on the 14th of October of the past year he departed from in front of the Company's shipyard with the galliot de Waaksaamheid, the Company's proa, and 2 boats, in the company of most of the Commanders and all the native boatmen of the Company's vessels, and from that place to the Village of Omra found the old passage, and perceived little or no change compared to previous years, finding there depths of 11, 10, and 9 feet of water; however, behind the said Village up to Saal's little tree, depths of 9 to 10 feet of water were found, while it was also discovered that the middle bank lying between the said tree and the Battase shore has neither decreased nor increased; but nonetheless, the deep water runs along the East Shore until past the black guardhouse, which having been passed, one must cross over towards the North to the Ferry dike, where it is presently somewhat deeper than in previous years; having arrived at the said Ferry dike, one must keep close along the North Shore, because the most water is close to the shore, taking special care not to come upon the so-called Green bank, as the undersigned has found that on the west side of that shoal even more land has accreted, over which no vessels can pass, so that one can pass along here up to the Fiscal's shoal within a good half cable length, considering that at an ordinary tide no less than 12 feet of water was found there; having passed this said shoal, one must constantly sound with a bamboo or so-called sounding pole until the River opens up, then one shall cross between both green banks, in the middle of the fairway from the North Shore, in which there is no change; when one has arrived at the end of the said banks, one shall gradually cross over towards Hollandia, and sail close along there until past the Bank of the Hoorij Bay, which at an ordinary tide one should not approach closer than 10 feet, while there is still room enough to be able to tack, and from there cross over towards the steep bank, as it has been found that the fairway there has become much narrower than in former times. From here one must head for Domes, taking into consideration, however, whether it is flood or ebb tide, because one must cut across the current there; but at present it is a little narrower and shallower than it was in previous years; however, one can still cross it with a vessel drawing 7 to 8 feet at half flood, and will then have no less than 10 to 9 feet of water. The 24th of March To the second mate and Equipage Overseer Clinckaert assigned water, and having arrived at the shore of Domes, one shall keep close along it until one has the fishermen's huts that stand on the beach abreast of oneself; then, tacking gradually away, one shall keep to the west until one catches the reach of the high bank that lies between the Horrij Bay and the straight River; from there one shall keep along the said bank, or with an open wind steer south-southwest over the sea banks, which are currently found to be somewhat drier than in earlier times, having at ordinary spring tide 17 to 16 feet of water upon them, but the opening between Domes beach and the inner corner of the outermost sea banks is still as wide as it was in previous years. As regards the Northern sea banks, I found no change therein, since upon taking bearings of the beacons of Sualy at north-northwest and the large tree of Biempoer at east-northeast 1/2 degree easterly, I still had 6 to 7 feet of water over mud bottom below Sualy; having thus set this down in all respect, I shall further take the liberty to bring to Your Honor's knowledge how, in my opinion, one can best and most securely enter from the outside to the inside. One should have the large tree standing on Biempoera north-east by east of oneself, whereupon one may without fear sail straight towards it until one catches the reach of the bank and the reefs, which one can just see at low water, and keep them on the port side, whereupon one can then stand north-northwest above the middle bank until one bears the well of Domes north-northwest and the tree of Brempoer east-southeast, while one can then safely steer straight for Domes, since at low water I found no less than 7 to 8 feet. Commander to the assembly, that a certain Persian named Sliertje had offered ƒ200:—:-: for the leaguer of Arrack, desiring to purchase the entire lot brought by Lapinenburg and Torenvliet, naturally after deducting such quantity as is required for rations or own use; that according to the statement of the Dispenser 60: leaguers could be sold, but that the aforementioned price, although equal to that obtained for the Arrack of Duynenburg, nevertheless yielded somewhat less profit, owing to the higher purchase price of that liquor; wherefore His Honour submitted for consideration whether to accept that offer, or rather to hold the Arrack until one could obtain as much more for it as the deficit in profit amounts to: whereupon, after deliberation, it was judged that this amount was too slight to undergo the risk of leakage and evaporation, since much more could be lost in the meantime than the deficit in profit amounts to, and it was accordingly resolved to dispose of the aforementioned 60: leaguers for the offered price of ƒ 200:-: - per Leaguer. The regents refusing to grant the factor permission for his departure, it is nevertheless resolved, without waiting for the translations of the two received letters, to persist in the already given order, and to instruct the factor accordingly. that Wedderborn, to his regret, had failed to accomplish this and thus misled them, he would make the restitution of that man a matter of particular concern to himself, and do his best, since the ship had to call at Bombay, to have him returned to the Company, if not at that place, then at least in Bengal; to which end the said Gentleman had requested the name of the deserter and other particulars necessary to find him, which were also immediately sent to him in writing; and as one has no reason whatever to doubt the sincerity of Mr Price in this matter, it was resolved to let the matter rest there and await the outcome thereof, but in the meantime to note down all the above here. Deliberation having been held on the reply of the recalled Factor of Amed-abaad, De Bellon, to the secret letter of the 4th of March last, dated the 25th ultimo, amounting to this: that the said Regents have refused to grant the Factor permission for his departure hither, and both, under pompous promises and repeated assurances for the future, insist that the Company's trade there may be continued, as they, as appears from all circumstances, seem to have gathered that it is intended to close down that factory; it was resolved—since Her High Excellencies' orders in that regard The 5th April Ao 1761: are too positive to hesitate for a moment, without waiting until the translations of the two Persian letters received at the same time from the deputy of the city Governor and the quarter-tax collector of the Maratha General Damagie Rauw Gay Kowal are ready, and as one can easily imagine what they contain—to persist without any alteration in the order already given; and as there is no possibility of having the Company's effects and servants come away against the will and without the consent of the Regents, since Amed-abaad is situated too far inland and everything up to the gates of Souratta falls under the Marathas, to await the time that the repeated entreaties of the Factor, especially upon the return of the Governor himself, who is currently busy making the usual journey into the countryside to collect the annual contributions, finally produce the desired effect; to facilitate which it was at the same time resolved to send no more goods whatsoever, whether for trade or as gifts, to Amed-abaad, in order to make the Regents see that by detaining the Company's servants in their design to thereby compel the Company to continue trade, they achieve nothing, nor may they ever expect that the measures taken will be deviated from.
