The 1st of December to take in, and sell another specification of the expenses incurred during the burying of the mast timbers: approved to write off the water ox that perished in the Sorgvrij garden, and buy another in its stead approved upon a report from the pay-bookkeeper to take in the same by the head and let it continue to run, whereas on the other hand one will sell at auction a carriage horse, which, due to its wicked vices of kicking, rearing, and biting, is utterly of disservice to the Company; and to let the aforementioned report follow below. Upon a statement showing that one of the water oxen in the Honorable Company's garden Sorgvrij had perished very suddenly, and the deponents during the inspection—for which they were expressly ordered—having found, upon the indication of the native malis, or gardeners, a large swelling under the tail close to the anus, which they presumed to have been caused by the bite of a snake; it was resolved, as no negligence was committed therein, to write off the dead ox to profit and loss and to purchase another in its place, as well as to let the said report follow here. Right Honorable and Worshipful Commanding Sir, The undersigned, having been appointed as express commissioners by Your Right Honorable and Worshipful to investigate the cause of the sudden perishing of one of the water oxen in the Company's garden Sorgvrij, proceeded thither for that purpose and there found the aforementioned beast dead, as well as questioned the native malis, or gardeners, as to what this might originally have stemmed from; who not only made it known to us, but also showed us a large swelling under the tail close to the anus, which they presumed by all indications to have come from the bite of a snake. The undersigned provisional pay-bookkeeper respectfully submits for report that the Moorish mariners of the Honorable Company's ship De Getrouwigheid, wrecked at Goa, accompanied by their families, since their arrival here have daily troubled him so much, pouring out manifold and, regarding their destitute condition, pitiful complaints, that it is impossible for them to wait any longer for the payment of the wages due to them from the Honorable Company. He also has the honor to report to Your Right Honorable and Worshipful at the same time that, see specification dated Batavia in the Castle the 21st of November 1761, there was issued to the sarang of the said mariners, or to the crew assigned under him upon their departure for this place, 4 months of advanced wages to 6 heads more than appears in these books, which amounts to a sum of 180 florins; and by the much esteemed order of Your Right Honorable and Worshipful, the said sum—in order to protect the Honorable Company from loss—was debited for one half each to the accounts of the sarang and the tindal; but upon their arrival here, having learned that the said 6 heads had deserted from the English at Nagapatnam and were there taken into service by the Honorable Company, as well as placed under his crew; and subsequently to the same

This is what the undersigned deemed necessary to report to Your Honorable Worships, further awaiting hereupon your much-esteemed favorable disposition, since he, who is followed almost everywhere by the mentioned seafarers, is no longer able to keep them pacified any longer, and it is to be feared that with further delay of payment this might very easily result in evil consequences in the matter of desertion. Whereupon deliberation being held, principal consideration was indeed given to the apprehension cited at the end of that report as being supported by very good reasons, the consequences of which would be very detrimental; and whereas that report also indicates that one had nothing to debit against those people, and consequently no reason to withhold from them what is theirs, it was resolved to have them paid their earned wages up to the day that the ship was lost, the more so because upon refusal one would not only be unable to avoid all inconveniences in a future recruitment, but also run the risk that those people address themselves to the Government or elsewhere to complain about the violent withholding (as a complaining native expresses himself in such cases) of his well-earned wages, to which under the present circumstances of the times no occasion at all must be given; but regarding the six sailors engaged in service at Nagapatnam who have enjoyed months too much, to instruct the pay bookkeeper to employ all conceivable means to recover that money from the Sarang and Tindal, although one sees little likelihood of that. 285 The 1st of December Report concerning the survey of the river The fairway in the river having been surveyed according to the annual custom by the Master Attendant Clinckaert and two inland vessel masters on the orders of the Master Commander, the report received regarding this was read, which it is deemed proper to insert. The 1st of December is fully two feet deeper than last year, and also that in the so-called channel or the fairway between the bank of Omrha I have perceived not the slightest change, but from the said shoal up to the black watch it is fully 1 to 1½ feet shallower than previously, so that there at low water there is fully 13 and in some few places 11 and 12 feet of water; also far from the flat beach, which ran on the north side along the village of Batta, much has washed away, whereby the river at that place has become somewhat wider than before; from the black watch one must keep to the north, toward the so-called Perrijdijk, where the drawer of this has found no change, though one must be mindful in crossing over of the wreck of a French ship lying there, as the same is still to be found at that place where the hoy De Mosselschelp ran aground and was thrown on its side in the month of February of this year, therefore, to avoid coming upon it, one must continually sound with the sounding pole; having passed this wreck, thus letting it run along the Perrijdijk, as the most water is there as in previous years, but if one cannot sail a straight course and must of necessity tack or drift, one must take good care not to come too near the green bank lying on the east side, because the said bank shelves very flatly; next steer forward to the small Kircaels bank, of which shoal one can nowadays see but little at half-ebb, and it has washed away so much that one can safely sail between that small island and the fixed shore, as at half-flood there is 9 to 10 feet of water, but by night or dark weather one must look out for it and sound with the sounding pole so as not to come close to it, because that little knoll is presently very deceptive; having passed the said place one must rely on the sounding pole and thus steer along the Perrijdijk until one opens Norrij Bay, in which bay or in the channel thereof, at low water there are 6 to 7 and in some places fully 10 feet of water, so that the vessels being here can lie afloat there; having passed Horry Bay one must pass between the green and high bank and next cross over to the southwest until beyond the bank of Horrij Bay, though not coming too close to the said bank, as there is room enough there to be able to tack, and thus let it run along that steep bank toward Domes; one must also pay close attention whether it is ebb or flood, because one must always lie athwart the current there; along the Domes shore one must let it run until one has the fishermen's huts abeam, and then steer to the west until one gets the corner of the high bank, which bank one must leave to starboard in sailing out; thus one must, if there is opportunity, head south-southwest with an open wind until over the sea banks, at which shoals the undersigned likewise has found no change at all, there being at spring tide 17, 18, 19 and 20 feet of water, it being understood when it is high water, and at neap tide 12 and 13 feet, but one spring tide somewhat more than the other, according as the winds blow strongly. Thus, all that ought to be observed in sailing out of this river having been set down, the undersigned will add hereto in what manner it is best and safest to come inside from the roads, consisting herein, that one must keep the tree of Biempoer to the northeast by east of oneself until one gets the fishermen's huts and the reach of the banks, which last mentioned one must leave to port, and thus steer north-northwest until above the middle bank, 287. The 1st of December The specification regarding the repairing of the gun carriages approved, as well as the annual allowance of the purser on the provisions passed. until one has the water well on Domes north-northeast and the tree of Biempoer east-southeast of oneself, and then steer southeast on the sounding pole toward Domes, as there with a falling ebb there is no less than 8 feet of water, but one must subsequently pay attention whether from there there is enough water to be able to go upriver, and having no lack thereof, one must conform to the reach of the river just as has already been stated for sailing out of the same.
