as well as of a melted lot caused by the sinking of a vessel, being only 4/5 percent more than the permitted write-off. The first of the aforesaid declarations was sworn to by Ensign Castel alone, as the corporal was away on detachment, and the other has also been properly confirmed with an oath by the Darroga, as well as the report by the commissioners, of which the judicial minute is inserted with our resolution of the 5th of this month. During the shipping off of 250 bags of saltpeter, the vessel into which they had been loaded and which on the following day would have had to take in even more, ran aground at night due to the falling of the water and thereby sprang a leak. Due to this accident, most of the bags were found to be almost entirely, others three-quarters, half, and one-quarter empty, and in total after drying, 12,161 lb was found melted away, as further appears from the report of the ordinary commissioners in the trade warehouses and from a declaration of the manjhi and three rowers of the vessel; which deficiency, having occurred through no one's neglect or fault, we resolved on the 19th of this month to allow to be written off, provided the aforesaid declaration was sworn to before the Council of Justice, as is about to take effect. Having received alongside the Pattena letter of the 12th of March last a finding of 5 suckels of mace, we passed for write-off on the 13th of April the deficiency stated therein of 91 lb or 11 3/8 percent, and 59¾ lb or 7 1/2 percent of dust and white leaves, as the dust and broken pieces were to be dispatched sealed in pots along with the boxes according to order, and the report had been properly sworn to. The trade books having been made ready for examination on the 22nd of January last, and this will always be observed; likewise the orders on the closing thereof. we commissioned at the same time for the inspection the Junior Merchant and Head of the cloth hall Kist, and the Junior Merchant and Invoice Keeper Doeve, since besides the Fiscal Immens, who was deadly ill at the time, there were no more members to whom that commission could be assigned, and one was thus indeed forced to deviate from the order to have the trade books examined by two Council members. Henceforth, pursuant to Your Right Honorable's order, we shall not send the books uninspected, and in the event that they could not be finished early enough, have them examined after the departure of the last ship and report the findings at the next occurring opportunity. Also, the trade bookkeeper and the servants at the subordinate offices have been most emphatically recommended to ensure that the books are ready at the fixed times; however, from Pattena, notwithstanding our admonition, they were received along with the other trade papers only on the 15th of this month, regarding which the servants pleaded in excuse in their letter of the 18th of January last the continuous indisposition of the outgoing second person Schultz. To have the undercalculated agio on granted assignments written off. The commission for the examination of the pay books has been assigned to the Council members Kist and Rietveld, and we hope to report thereof to Your Right Honorable at the next opportunity. The curators in the estate of the deceased have drawn 6000 rupees from the cash office. The prohibition against the release of money from the estates shall be maintained. The junior merchant Aanzorgh deceased insolvent. The Dhaka Resident administers the estate of a certain Frenchman. year, it will appear that, notwithstanding that the native creditors of the estate of the deceased Kasimbazar secunde Arent Jacob de Wilde, according to the Kasimbazar letter of the 9th of April, have repeatedly requested the settlement of their case, and have pressed for it with all earnestness and demanded payment, and no longer seemed willing to listen to reason or have patience, and even compelled the servants by their repeated petitions to make known to us their ceaseless complaints, demands, and veiled threats, we have nevertheless resolved to persist in our Resolution of the first of November 1763, as no reason could be found to grant them more than before. From the proceeds of the estate of the third person at Patna, Daniel Aukema, according to the letter from the servants of the 4th of April of the past year, f 1955: 11:—, being the amount he was in arrears for the supply of packaging goods, was withheld, and the remainder, being f 96: 5: 8, was taken in favor of the Head Office. Upon receipt of Your High Noble's order to directly inform the Gentlemen Masters how much he still remained in arrears, the last ships had already departed, so that we will only be able to fulfill this at the end of this year. However, on the 29th ultimo, we requested a report from the invoice master Doeve as to how much that backlog still amounts to, which, not yet having come in, is to follow at a later opportunity. The curators in the insolvent estates of the deceased merchant de Wilde and junior merchant Pribaut having requested, by Kasimbazar letter of the 18th of August, to be permitted to receive Sr. R. 6000:— from the Company's cash office for the payment of legal and other expenses, we considered on the 28th ditto that we could not grant this before an account thereof was drawn up in order to better judge what that sum was needed for; but having received that account and further considered the matter on the 28th of September, we judged that we should not enter into the examination thereof, as the aforementioned curators would have to render account thereof later anyway, and therefore resolved to allow the requested sum of R. 6000: to be issued to them. Furthermore, we have caused an extract to be issued to the Court of Justice and the servants at Kasimbazar from Your High Noble's repeatedly mentioned rescript, to maintain the prohibitions against the release of money from the aforementioned merged estates until the order from the Gentlemen Masters concerning this shall have been received, for their information and observance. The junior merchant Jacobus Aansorgh having died at Kasimbazar intestate, we thought fit, upon the request of the servants by letter of the 18th of August to be permitted to hand over that estate to the person entitled thereto ex officio, to allow it on the 28th of the same month to be handed over to the curators ad lites, who later, upon proven insolvency, transferred it again to the sequestrator. A certain Monsieur Estienne, who has served for some time at Chandannagar in the office of clerk of the court, having shown to us by a petition on the 14th of September last that the bookkeeper and Resident at Dhaka Daniel Lankheet had seized all the property of the former surgeon in French service named Proux, who had drowned at Dhaka; and this by virtue of a testament whereby the aforementioned Proux was said to have appointed two of his illegitimate children as heirs and Lankheet as executor, which he, the clerk, believed not to be legally valid, and therefore requested, by virtue of the custom of returning the property of someone who happens to have died in a foreign colony to his own nation, that the aforementioned Lankheet might be ordered to return everything he might have in his possession of the deceased to him, Estienne; we have, before disposing thereof, thought fit to demand a report from Lankheet as to how that matter stood. Who thereupon having made known to us by his letter of the 20th of October that the repeatedly mentioned Proux had long before already entered into the service of the English, and thus his estate did not belong under the French, and the testament, moreover, had been approved by the Mayor's Court or Court of Justice at Calcutta; we, judging on the 13th of November that we had no reasons to prevent Lankheet from the administration of that estate, thought fit the request of the aforementioned Chandannagarian

Brueys has provided sureties for what he must compensate. To deny the Chandernagore Secretary. By resolution of 28 December last, the Report of the permanent committee for the examination of the Accounts of the Curator ad lites was inserted, regarding the estates of deceased Company servants that came under his charge in the financial year 1763/4, on which nothing was found to comment, the Account being found in the Daily Register under the same date. On the 1st of this month, it being shown by the committee of Orphan Masters that the Assistant sworn clerk of Police, by the Instruction resolved in the session of 2 December 1763, was indeed appointed to act as scribe in Orphan matters, but that nothing was thereby allocated to him for salary or any gratuity, we have thus thought fit to grant him 5 percent on the movable and 2½ percent on the immovable goods that shall be sold by the orphan masters. Concerning the Debits and Compensations, as former pay bookkeeper, we have to report the request of the Kasimbazar Secunde Pieter Brueijs, by letter of 9 April last past, to be permitted, in view of his inability to pay what was imposed on him for compensation by resolution of 16 March prior, on account of under-debiting on the pay account in the year 1760/1, to be debited for it on his pay account; which we refused on 13 April, but on the other hand, in view of his known inability, permitted the payment to be made in two instalments, namely the first one year, and the second instalment two years after the date of the resolution, provided that for both instalments he provides sufficient surety; just as the native merchants Bhollenaatdas and Kissen Mohunsing, according to the deed inserted in the Resolution of 19 June, have presented themselves as sureties in solidum for it. Discovered and redressed Error in a previous Resolution concerning various debits. The invoice keeper Doeve, in a report that is inserted in our Resolution of 5 August 1763, did not agree with the marginal note on the Extract of the findings of the Hooghly Trade books for the year 1757/8 dated 23 December 1762, as by the aforesaid marginal note compensation was ordered of ƒ 64:4: regarding the remainder of the under-debit on the account of the officers of the ships Overschie and Pylsweert, as well as ƒ 10446:6: - for excess written-off saltpetre at Patna, from 175¾ to 1757/8 inclusive, with 1/6 premium or ƒ 1714:1:, and in the aforesaid Resolution only mention is made of the premium; thus, upon investigating this, we found that that decision was taken on the Extract of Your Right Honourable's Resolution of 23 December 1762, in which mention is only made of that premium, as the aforesaid marginal notes had not yet been received at that time, and likewise the same have remained at the Trade office since their receipt without having been brought into the Meeting; wherefore we then also resolved on the aforesaid 3 July to let the other ordered compensations take effect and thus to have the ƒ 64:4: paid by the Assistant August Johan Greegert, the error having been committed by him. Furthermore, to have the ƒ 10446:6: compensated, for two thirds from the Estate of the former Patna Chief La Tour, and the remaining third part by the merchant Lafont, as being at that time Secunde. Grievance of one of the participants in this same case, how amended. However, when the debit of Lafont's share arrived at Patna, he requested by letter of 18 August postponement of payment until he should have submitted his written defense in that regard; but as he himself was present in our Meeting when the order for that compensation was received and attended the deliberations thereover without ever indicating that he wished to defend himself in that regard or provide anything for his excuse, and moreover that order ought already to have been complied with, we resolved on 28 August to deny the aforesaid request, and to order Lafont once again to pay his portion, being ƒ 4085:4, into the treasury. Notwithstanding this, we received alongside Patna writings of 8 September once again a request to be excused from payment until Your Right Honourable's further approval; alongside which several reasons for excuse are cited in a Petition received together with the aforesaid letter. But on 28 September we judged that we could do nothing else therein than to present the same to Your Right Honours, as is hereby respectfully done, the Petition being forwarded among the appendices, and meanwhile to let the compensation take effect without delay. A further discovered error. But we have at the same time decided to submit that request to Your Right Honourables, and take the liberty of referring for the rest in this regard to our aforementioned Resolution of 13 November of the past year, in which the probable cause of that mistake is cited. Regarding the Household orders, we shall briefly record here that by our Resolution of the 27th of March of the past year, the price current of the dispensary goods for the last six months of the financial year 1764 was inserted, as was by our resolution of the 14th of September that for the first six months of 1764/5, in accordance with which we have approved to have the supply carried out thereafter. Furthermore, upon their request by letter of the 8th of February of the past year, we have permitted the servants at Kassembazaar to repair the Company's palanquin, which had not been renewed since the Year 1756 and could no longer be used as such, and if necessary to spend ƒ345:17:— for it; however, according to their letter of the 6th of March 1764, new racks there; here they had to be purchased, as well as some writing paper. this cost no more than ƒ329:3:— and thus ƒ16:14: less than the last time a new one was made. To conclude this main section, we will briefly note the appointment on the 9th of June of the Assistant and Second Packer Francois Lami as Almoner in place of the Bookkeeper Herklots, who had served for three years; and that of the Assistant and Third Packer Tierry Rynaard on the 5th of this month in place of the Bookkeeper Abraham Roghe, who departs with this vessel and humbly thanks Your Right Noblenesses for the discharge granted to him. Under judicial matters, we must first humbly thank Your Right Noblenesses for the legal authors sent over for the instruction of the Court of Justice here, and furthermore we have the honor to report the appointment of the Junior Merchant Christoffel Maurits Doeve as a member of the Court of Justice in place of the Bookkeeper Ludolf Hoevenaar. Furthermore, upon the representation of the President of that Court, the Senior Administrator Isinck, concerning the few members who were available to attend to the commissions during the shipping season, it was decided on the 3rd of January last to appoint two more members to the aforementioned Court: the Bookkeepers Gregorius Herklots and Willem Kerkman; who were then also sworn in and subsequently took their seats. Furthermore, the following criminal trials are sent in original form among the appendices in separate bundles, namely: One in the case of the late Fiscal of this Directorate, Master Andreas Franciscus Immens, acting as officer and prosecutor, against Cenna of Makasser, serf of the first undersigned, concerning the attempted rape of the wife of the Assistant and ordinary deputy Johannes Matthias Ross. Whereas the aforementioned officer concluded his demand for the gallows, this was moderated by the sentence of the Court of Justice of the 28th of April 1764 to a severe flogging, branding, and banishment for life to such place as it should please Your Right Noblenesses, and condemnation to the costs and expenses of justice. 127 And because the first undersigned had indicated to the Fiscal that he would like to see the prisoner punished in front of the fort as a greater deterrent and example to others, and the officer and prosecutor had concluded accordingly, the aforementioned Court, on the grounds that such had once been disapproved by Your Right Noblenesses by missive of the 25th of July 1739 because of the consequences that might arise therefrom with the Moors, resolved to have the Director asked by two delegated members and the secretary whether he would be pleased to request the necessary permission from the Durbar, or rather take the consequences upon his own responsibility, in order to govern themselves accordingly in drawing up the sentence. This was done, and permission for the execution on land having already been obtained beforehand from the Moorish government, it was then carried out in front of the land gate of the lodge. However, since it was a serf of the first undersigned and it therefore seemed improper for the sentence to be approved by him, that term was left out of it. The aforementioned prisoner died some time after he had received his punishment and had been shackled in chains. Another by the aforementioned officer against Joan de Rosairo, the Company's prisoner, on account of the mistreatment of his slave woman, for which he was condemned by definitive sentence of the Judge to be severely flogged and branded, and to remain banished to the Island of Edam for twenty-five years, together with the costs and expenses of justice, with denial of the demanded banishment for the rest of his life. The first part of that sentence was then also executed on one of the sloops, after it had been approved by the first undersigned. But the first sworn clerk of justice, Daniel Francois de Barrij, who, owing to the absence of the secretary Jacob Eilbracht to the aurang of Sjanderkona, had served the assembly on that occasion, having neglected to give notice thereof to the Fiscal, was, upon the complaint of that Officer, seriously reprimanded about it in the aforementioned Court, as can be seen, alongside what was further indicated by the Fiscal regarding this matter, in two minutes which are attached in copy to the trial records. 128 Fiscal against a certain Jan van Leuwen of Rotterdam, against whom, although he was suspected of desertion and crimping, no action could be instituted for lack of evidence, according to the decree of the Council of Justice he was to be placed on one of the sloops until there was an opportunity to send him to Batavia, in order to request Your Excellencies directly to be accepted into the Company's service, as Your Excellencies were pleased to order to Suratta by letter of 12 November 1759, which he declared he was inclined to do. But the first undersigned, believing that on the sloops he would have too much opportunity to leave us again if he had not truly intended to come over to us, thought it proper to confine him in the Fort until the first occasion for his dispatch should present itself, which he however did not await, as he escaped from the Lodge without being able to be recaptured. From the aforementioned decree it also appears that the Fiscal Immens, having delayed the inquiries until more than a month after the apprehension of the aforementioned van Leuwen, and thereby having given time to desert to a certain sailor who had accused the prisoner of crimping, was reproached for that negligence by the Council of Justice and condemned to a fine of two months' wages for the benefit of the Dutch cemetery here, and furthermore to pay the costs in these cases out of his private purse. Another by the aforementioned Fiscal against the soldiers Iohan Hendrik Bekker and Leendert van Munster, for wilful and premeditated attempted desertion, for which they, according to the claim filed against them and the sentence pronounced thereupon, were punished by the Court with the gauntlet; the first prisoner Bekker two days twelve and six times, and the other three days in succession, twelve, six and four times up and down, and furthermore the first banished to the Island of Edam for three and the other for four years, to work for food without wages, with further forfeiture of half of their credited monthly wages and condemnation to the costs and expenses of justice, which sentence was approved by the first undersigned. Another 129 Another by the aforementioned Officer against Rienk Beerents, surnamed de Vries, and Hendrik van der Reiden, alias Pranger; the first in the case of desertion and attempted crimping of the Company's servants, and the second as being suspected by the said Officer Plaintiff of having wanted to lend a hand thereto; concerning which it was concluded by the Fiscal in his claim that the first prisoner, Rienk Beerents, being brought onto one of the expected ships or one of the sloops present here, and being handed over to the executioner, should be severely flogged on the bare back with the noose around his neck, furthermore branded, and banished for all his life to the Island of Edam, to work there for food without wages, and that the second prisoner, van der Reiden, should be plunged three times into the water from the yardarm, severely ducked, and banished to the aforementioned Island for the period of eight years, with confiscation of half of their goods and credited monthly wages, and condemnation of both of them to the costs and expenses of justice, or such otherwise as the said Council according to good justice should find proper. Thus the claim regarding the first prisoner was fully adjudicated, and he was condemned to all the costs; but the other was acquitted and dismissed indemnified, which sentence was approved by the first undersigned and subsequently executed on one of the sloops. Among the papers of this trial is to be found, among others, a sealed secret judicial minute from the Lord Governor of Calcutta, Vansittart, found on the aforementioned Rienk Beerends. Another in the case of the said Fiscal Officer Plaintiff against Jose Fortozo van Monsterre, former chief mate, and Gregor Pre van Rommela, former gunner on a brigantine named Kader Bachs, which arrived here from Suratta with the Dutch flag and pass, the Lord's prisoners in the case of vehement suspicion of complicity in the murder of the captain of the aforementioned vessel, and letting the actual murderer escape, named Emanuel Zaldan; as well as Emanuel, manumitted slave of the murdered captain, the Lord's hostage on account of the challenge of his testimony and the accusation by the first prisoner of having attempted his life. Concerning the first prisoner, it was concluded by the Fiscal 130 that, being brought to the place where criminal justice is customarily administered, he should be punished with the rope so that death follows, and the body subsequently thrown into the Ganges as prey for the fish; and concerning the second prisoner, to be severely flogged and branded, and banished to the Island of Edam for fifteen years; with forfeiture of all the goods of the first prisoner, and condemnation of both to the costs and expenses of justice, or such otherwise as should be found proper according to law and equity; while he further declared regarding the hostage Emanuel that as yet no action could be instituted, and that he therefore may be released under formal pledge upon the Rod of Justice to present himself in court at all times if required, on pain of being held confessed and convicted. and the other for eight consecutive years, to remain banished to such place as it should please Your High Excellencies to order, there to work on public works for food and clothing, with confiscation of all their goods, and condemnation to the costs and expenses of justice, further denying the further or greater claim of the plaintiff ex officio against the prisoners, yet conforming with his declaration concerning the hostage Emanuel. Then, as by the aforesaid Council, during the resumption on the 17th of December of that sentence, consideration was given to the request of the two delinquents to be sent with the documents to their charge to Batavia, whereby they seemed to wish to indicate an intention to appeal the sentence, but whereto, since in some respects they could be held pro confesso, they did not seem admissible, which nevertheless might perhaps be sustained otherwise by experienced jurists or the contrary be proved by this or that law, whereby the aforesaid Council, if it had curtailed the prisoners in their rights, would thus expose itself to an extraordinary accountability, and considering on the other hand, however, that the sending over of the prisoners with the documents was directly contrary to the positive, reiterated orders of Your High Excellencies, it was approved, in view of that perplexity, that if the plaintiff ex officio should not appeal against the pronounced sentence, to leave the request of the prisoners deferred to the judgment of the first undersigned, and to request that, in case he might incline to execution, he then grant written orders concerning the difficulty in which the aforesaid Council found itself regarding the appeal. Yet the first undersigned, regarding that deference and the request to grant written orders as shocking and arrogant, returned the documents to them on the 21st thereof in order to dispose finally thereof, having wished to indicate to them by his writing of that date in a gentle manner that they were as little authorized to leave anything deferred to him—since, without needing their deference, he was authorized thereto by Your High Excellencies—as to prescribe to him the manner in which he must declare himself. Whereupon the aforesaid Council submitted by the mouth of the President, as appears from the minutes of the following day, that no further final disposition could be made concerning the trial than had already occurred through the passing of the sentence, with the further request to approve or disapprove the same, as he should find proper. The first undersigned desiring this in writing, and such having been given to him, as appears from the minutes of the 24th of December, made remarks upon the first minutes of the 17th of December aforesaid, as by his writing of the 29th of December, which was inserted and answered by the judicial minutes of the 5th of January last, as well as the former can be seen attached to the trial records; having at the same time thought fit, since he judged that the claim ought to have been adjudicated, to send the detainees with the documents to their charge to the headquarters, just as the same, along with all the former, are conveyed by the bearer of this. Also attached to the last-mentioned documents is an account of the sequestrator Jacob Eilbracht regarding the sold goods of the two last prisoners; and it will not be out of place to mention here that, having received word that the actual murderer was in Calcutta, the ministry there was requested by letter for the extradition of the person, but we received in reply that such a man, having shown himself some days prior, was missing again shortly thereafter, but that orders had been sent to the officers of justice to seek him out, which however was not of the desired result. Furthermore, there are also transmitted in original the criminal trial records of the aforesaid Fiscal Immens, ex officio impetrant of edictal citation and plaintiff, against Laurens Stok, corporal, and other persons from the seafaring and military service, summoned by edict, who have gone missing from the Company's service since the 1st of September 1763 until the last of August 1764, and by sentence of the Council of Justice of this office were condemned to remain banished for all their lives from the jurisdiction of the Honorable Company, upon penalty that, if they ever allow themselves to be found there again, they shall be punished in body and life in such manner as shall be found proper according to good justice and the laws of the land; furthermore with confiscation of half of their left-behind goods and accrued wages, and condemnation of the defendants

Report on the inquiry into the escape of a detainee. Procedures conducted regarding it. both in the costs and expenses of justice, which verdict was approved by the first undersigned. The Sergeant and Garrison Writer George Suiker, having been placed under arrest in the month of May of the past year on account of certain falsifications committed regarding the receipt rolls and warrants for soldiers' wages, of which we shall make a proper report at the next opportunity, in order to be able to investigate that matter, but having found an opportunity to escape, the necessary inquiry was made into the cause of that discovery, and action was instituted by the Fiscal against the Officer and sergeant on watch, and he concluded in his declaration that the Ensign Castel should be condemned to a fine of three months' pay for the benefit of the Dutch cemetery here, and the sergeant Koenraad Smit should serve four months as a common soldier, or such other military punishment as should be deemed appropriate, with condemnation of both of them in the costs; but regarding the other persons who were suspected of having in one way or another given cause for the flight of the aforementioned 133 Remarks of the Director regarding this. A fruitless reclamation of the accused from the English. Appeals. aforementioned Suiker, he declared that he could not institute any action against them, whereupon the aforementioned Ensign was acquitted by the Council of Justice, and the sergeant was condemned to serve two months as a common soldier and to pay the costs, with dismissal of the remainder of the claim. The remark of the first undersigned in an extract from the Memorial of 28 July 1764, which shows that without approving the sentence against the sergeant Coenraad Smit and their indulgence toward the soldier Hans Wolf Ebens, he consented to its execution, and pointed out to the Council of Justice that it had gravely overstepped its bounds in imposing a fine upon the Ensign Castel for taking into arrest the provisionally appointed Assistant Willem Cadet, since such pertained solely to the first undersigned, besides that in such a case an Officer on watch is authorized at night and unseasonable hours to take into arrest, until further orders, anyone regarding whom there is any suspicion of complicity. Item appointment of an ordinary commissioner at Kassembazaar. has been refused, for such reasons as are known from the resolution of the 4th of April of the past year, we proceed to the servants; among whom the first undersigned humbly thanks Your High Nobilities for the nomination made to the Gentlemen Majors, that he may enjoy the full salary and emoluments as Director, and the Kassembazaar Head Bacheracht, to be benefited with the absolute quality and salary of Senior Merchant, which latter is particularly obliged to Your High Nobilities for the title of Second of this Directorate so favorably bestowed upon him. The Junior Merchants Rietveld and Pieter Brueys, and the ordinary commissioners Johannes Mattias Ross and Jacob Nikasius de Meyer, also respectfully thank Your High Nobilities that it has pleased the same to nominate them to be advanced in their respective services to Merchants and Junior Merchants; while the other servants who have been confirmed and promoted by Your High Nobilities testify that they will endeavor with all zeal to render themselves further worthy of Your High Nobilities' favor. The aforementioned Junior Merchants Rietveld and Doeve, the Bookkeeper De Barrij, and the Assistants Ross and Tholl, request by their petitions accompanying this that Your High Nobilities Seat in Council granted to the Junior Merchant Doeve above the Secretary Falck. That also when the former Head Administrator Robbert Hendrik Armenault arrived here in the Year 1754, although he had been appointed by Your High Nobilities as trade Bookkeeper and first Warehouse Master, he was nevertheless given a seat below the other Junior Merchants, and had not obtained rank above them until His Honour was advanced to merchant in the aforementioned offices, as could be seen by the signatures of the original Resolutions of the last of August and 6 September 1754; that the same seemed to be in use at the other outer offices, at least that, not to mention other examples, at Suratta the Junior Merchant Bangeman, who was Warehouse Master and thus in an office which before him was filled by a merchant, held rank below the other Council members who were only junior merchants, and through which he thus believed that precedence belonged to him, as having had a seat in the Political Council since the Year 1759 and thus for over Five Years; of which right he thought he had lost nothing, although in the Year 1763 he had silently witnessed that the junior merchants Rietveld and Brueys, upon their introduction into the Council, were assigned a seat above him, as having then been under the impression that the status of merchant would immediately follow thereupon. This request having been considered by us, we have resolved, in view of the fact that it has already been practiced several times to grant Junior Merchants in merchants' offices also the prerogatives thereof, and the cited example of Suratta was not applicable in this case because the office of Warehouse Master there was occupied now by a merchant and then again by a junior merchant, to give the aforementioned Doeve a seat above Falk, but to permit the latter to enter in the Resolution whatever he thought he could bring forward in his favour, as well as to present his aforementioned reasons thus in detail to Your High Nobilities. The Fiscals being customarily excused from the ordinary Commissions, the Junior Merchant Rietveld has also been discharged as commissioned Orphan Master, and in his place has been appointed the Junior Merchant Doeve, and instead of the Bookkeeper Hoevenaar, the Bookkeeper Borwater, who has been brought hither from Pattena, has been appointed as permanent commissioner in the great treasury. The Pattena Chief Lafont, who arrived there on the 19th of April of the past year, received the transfer on the last of that Month, and we have permitted the outgoing second Schultz to come away once he should have effected the transfer to his successor, the Junior Merchant Hardij; which latter has also already taken effect according to the letter of the 9th of December, as far as concerns the goods and effects that are in the custody of the second, whilst the Books and Trade papers would be handed over when the same were ready. Furthermore, the Assistants Fredrik Moole, Jacobus Benoist, and Casparus Eilbracht have been promoted to Bookkeepers, and the provisional Assistants Pieter van der Huis and Jan Cornelis Pas to absolute Assistants, all on account of the expiration of their terms, just as Surgeon Boudewijn Cuperus, who had been stationed at Pattena, has been granted his discharge to the Netherlands, with chief surgeon's baggage according to previous examples. Among the papers received in the past Year there having been found a deed whereby the Extraordinary Fireworker is appointed, whereas however in the revered rescription of the 7th of August it is mentioned that Your High Nobilities have not been able to grant his request made in that regard, we have judged that the aforementioned deed was sent over by mistake, and consequently resolved to send the same back to the Head Office and to credit its amounts back thither, which liberty we hope will not be taken amiss of us. The aforementioned Vernuu having passed away here at the end of last December, we have provisionally appointed in his place as Head of the Artillery the Bombardier Jan Fredrik Roothoff, who requests Your High Nobilities by the accompanying Petition to be confirmed in that service, and to be favoured with the status and pay of extraordinary Fireworker. Batavia To his High Nobility The High Noble, Right Honourable Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra Governor-General on behalf of the state of the United Netherlands and its East India Company together with The Honourable Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies per the sloop de Kroonprins Having had the honour to give Your High Nobilities, in our previous respectful letters of the 20th February and 9th March last, of which we enclose the duplicates herewith, a detailed report of the greatest and principal part of the events and matters conducted High Noble Widespreading Lords. here; we shall only set down in this letter all that has occurred since, and might still be lacking from the formal description. First of all we can note that the ship de Hoop got out to sea in good condition on the 24th March, without any loss; on the other hand, the ship 's Gravezande succeeded only on the 23rd with the loss of three anchors and the leaving behind of two months' rations of rice and cadjang due to the sinking of a craft, of which accident the circumstances are not yet known to us, wherefore we shall conduct the necessary inquiry regarding it. The officers of that vessel having, instead of the lost provisions, purchased rice at Hinsjelie for 120 rixdollars, that amount is on this occasion debited to the Main Office, in order, with Your High Nobilities' approval, to be placed on the expense account of that ship. The memorandum of the expenses of the sloops and smaller craft stationed here in the year 1763/4, amounting to ƒ44280:—: -, having been submitted at the session of the 15th March; we have 157 Supplies to the Kroonprins. Finding of the Nadir Shah Rupees received. Deficit of received timber from the Hoop. Resolution to sell the silver received with the Hoop. approved the same subject to Your High Nobilities' esteemed approbation, as it amounts to ƒ5813: 13:8. less than the previous financial year, yet ƒ15680:—: more than was determined for it in the Memorandum of Retrenchment or rather Your High Nobilities' dispatch of 29th October 1757. To the Commander of the sloop de Kroonprins, the Second Mate Hendrik Warmenhuizen, we have, upon his request inserted by petition, granted the necessary provisions for four months by our resolution of the 29th March. Upon the sorting of the Nadir Shah Rupees brought with the last-mentioned vessel 's Gravezande, there were found among them 109 counterfeit pieces and 129½ short, according to the written report of the permanent commissioners in the great cash-vault, the Junior Merchant Martinus Koning and Bookkeeper Martinus Joachim Borwaater, inserted in our resolution of the 29th January, which report, as appears from the judicial minute received at the session of the 5th February, was properly sworn to, just as the bags and counterfeit Rupees have also already been sent off with 's Gravezande. The skipper of the Hoop, Meindert Tijde, not having provided the declaration of the ship's officers concerning the delivery of the timbers, we therefore resolved on the 5th of this month, upon the received report of the Master Carpenter Anthonij Vorster that 244 Chinese and three large Singkeng planks, as well as two planks Panjang Lima and 5 Amboina beams were received short here, to have the timber shed relieved thereof in the books and to debit the amount of the same with two capitals of advance to the Main Office, to be compensated, by Your High Nobilities' pleasure, by the officers of the aforesaid vessel, since, because of the failure to provide the aforesaid declaration, it is apparent that those timbers were truly delivered short; whilst for greater certainty we thought fit to have the oath taken by the aforesaid carpenter that he did not receive the same, which, as appears from the judicial minute that is transmitted in authentic copy alongside the aforesaid report under the appendices of this letter, was duly done.
