178. 622 Short demonstration or statement showing the origin of the decreased or increased expenses, namely: 25 February This small additional difference arises from the transfer of some departed and newly arrived servants. These additional expenses have their origin in the boat freight charges paid for transporting the chief Lafont and the third person Borwater to this place, as well as from the wages for messengers, of whom, due to the war in this province, more were dispatched than previously. This large deficit has been incurred because during this financial year, on two occasions or for about 5 months, we maintained 300 musketeers in service for the security of this lodge and the outer residences, alongside about 19 vessels and other unavoidable expenses incurred for the aforementioned purpose, all described separately in the specification booklet accompanying this. The lower amount of this account compared to the previous one is due to the fact that in the preceding year at Pettuadeente extraordinary repairs had to be made to the revetment there, all of which was ruined again, whereas in this financial year not even ordinary repairs were carried out. This reduced expenditure is solely attributable to the fact that in this financial year very few military personnel, sometimes only 2, 3 to 1 man, were stationed here, besides the second Schultz in the previous financial year having drawn his outstanding salary of four years, which practically alone accounts for the previous year's higher payment. 6 This increased amount arises from the additional payment granted to the court envoy according to the license, which increase he received for this entire year, whereas in the previous year he received it for only 8 months. From which deducted the ƒ16805:8:8 by which the expenses in the year 1762/3 exceeded the profits, it appeared that the office, in comparison with the previous year, has fallen behind by ƒ12050:4:8. Which, as stated, having been caused by the aforementioned extraordinary expenses, although otherwise the profits exceed those of the previous year by ƒ17170:10:—, it was approved and resolved to pass the same, subject to the requested approval of the High Government of the Indies. Nothing having been found to comment upon the cash account of the month of December received from there, upon examination it was resolved to pass the same as well, as also the negotiation effected on the 25th ultimo of sikka rupees 14000:—:— at ¼ per cent interest per month, against which on the same day three bonds totaling sikka rupees 10,000:—:— with the accrued interest thereon were paid off; and on six bills of exchange. 483 624 25 February. The Patna governor having sent to request the employees for a piece of green and a piece of black velvet, which he urgently needed on account of the death of his brother, the Lord Nawab Jaffer Ali Khan; and of which the piece of black had to be purchased for 202:—: - sicca rupees or ƒ 318:3, and the said Lord, following the example of the English, as an offering of respect on the occasion of the assumption of the government of the country, having been presented through his Dewan with four gold and five silver rupees, and twenty-five silver rupees having had to be given to his servants, amounting together to ƒ 70: 11: 8; it was resolved, out of consideration of the necessity to keep the native grandees as friendly as possible, especially when such can be accomplished by such small gifts, to pass both deliveries. 9 March.
