Discussion concerning the sending of one instead of three lakh promised at interest by Nandakumar. The Honorable Director communicating to the Meeting that the former Dewan Nandakumar, who, as appears from what was recorded in the Resolution of the 22nd of May of this year, had promised to provide three lakh Rupees at interest, but of which, due to various difficulties and hindrances encountered along the way, nothing came, had finally sent one lakh of sonawat Rupees; so it was considered during the deliberation whether one should now accept that money or reject it; that hitherto, because of the long absence of the ships, one has in hand no more than circa six tons of bar silver and one ton of gold Rupees; without knowing how much more one can still rely on or to what extent the money demand that was made can be fulfilled, of which in all probability much will be lacking; that furthermore, no more than three-quarters of the amount of the contract having been disbursed, it is therefore more than time to also issue the remainder so as to have the goods arrive in time to be able to send four ships to Europe; that even though one might succeed in fully loading four return ships without borrowing funds, one would nevertheless subsequently, in the event of a deficient fulfillment of the demand, find oneself, just as in this year at the awarding of the contract, unable to make the most necessary advance disbursements; and that according to all appearances it would then again be impossible to obtain what is needed at interest, as one experienced at the previous contract, and in these penniless times one naturally cannot expect otherwise; wherefore it was unanimously approved and resolved, for these reasons, to accept the aforementioned one hundred thousand sonawat Rupees—which according to given hope will soon be followed by another two lakh—at the usual interest of three-quarters per cent per month, and to issue a bond for the same; as well as to disburse that money to the merchants as soon as possible. The aforesaid day. The aforesaid Honorable Director subsequently having proposed whether, for the aforesaid cited reasons, one should not proceed to accept two lakh Rupees offered by Mr. John Johnstone, former Member of Council at Calcutta, on bills of exchange on the Netherlands, it was resolved by a majority of votes to accept that amount as well, and in accordance with the request of the aforesaid Johnstone to grant assignations for it with the usual discount, to be paid off after the conclusion of the autumn sale of 1766, provided they are paid into the treasury in due time; and furthermore such additional sums as one will find opportunity to obtain further on assignation, and which might be required for trade for this year. The merchants collectively subsequently having been given permission, upon the Honorable Director's proposal, to enter, it was represented by them that they had recently learned, on the occasion when the firti, or the rejects of their delivered linens, were to be returned to them, that those cloths, pursuant to the Resolution of this Meeting of the 15th of March of this year, would be stamped before delivery; that this would certainly cause them considerably much damage, as the stamps are everywhere regarded as marks of inferior quality and the goods being thereby discredited could not be disposed of, whereas they now otherwise found opportunity to rid themselves of them with the French, who, if there were no stamps on them, would not inspect so closely; wherefore they requested, as they otherwise lose much by taking back the firti, that to save many of them from total ruin, the goods might be returned unstamped; which having been deliberated upon and taken into consideration that in taking the aforesaid decision to stamp the firti, one had solely in view to prevent getting the same goods back into one's hands, since there was then little or no appearance that the merchants would be able to dispose of them, for which, however, now that the French are seeking goods from all sides, there is a good chance, but in which the stamping would certainly cause hindrance because the reason for it could not remain secret, and the act itself would at least cause great suspicion regarding the quality; so it has been approved with unanimity of votes and

On this occasion, the joint merchants having complained about the equally strong continuing hindrances in the collection of linens, regarding which, notwithstanding all the good promises of the English gentlemen, not the slightest change for the better has been noticed hitherto, and moreover having made known that they would thereby not be able to comply with the procurement contract, particularly concerning the Iaggernaaspoersche, Hendiaalsche, and Beddaalsche goods, with the request that this might not be imputed to them in the future, as there has been no lack of efforts on their part in that regard; it is thus approved and resolved to make a note thereof herewith, in order to give necessary consideration thereto after the completion of the delivery. That Adrianus Petsse of Amsterdam, having entered into the service of private Dutch traders here in the year 1757, has not been heard of since, and one is therefore also unable to provide any clarification regarding his person. That Jan Adolf Pos of Olighausen, as appears from the answered Batavia pay roll memorandum of the year 176¾, was only overcredited by f. 7: 7:-, and that this error was properly rectified in the books of this Directorate of 176¾; but as far as the withdrawal of his account is concerned, this certainly could not have taken place here had he not presented and surrendered it for that purpose, so that he was notoriously provided with duplicate accounts at Batavia and consequently enjoyed too much, although the Company suffers no loss by this, as he deserted on the 26th March 1764 with a credit balance of f. 29: 9:13. That 14. 823 The 17th September: That Cornelis Riesveld of Amsterdam has reimbursed the amount of the two accounts withdrawn here, which had already been remitted by him to Europe among others, amounting to f. 960:—:—, in the past financial year 176¾, by order of the present Director, in such manner as he, Rietveld, had received those moneys here from the Company's treasury. That Iohan Christiaan Lis of Lozarren, having departed from here for Batavia on the 12th December 1763, the f. 25. 1. 5 overcredited to him in loco must therefore be claimed over there. That Willem Sanders of Amsterdam already passed away here on the 2nd October 1763, and it is thus not feasible to rectify the errors committed regarding the under-debiting and over-crediting to him. And that Iohan Esmont of Waarschouw, according to the formal account closed in the train to the west under date of 15th January 1760, was taken in here, and consequently the erroneous debit cited regarding him was certainly made by the train's pay bookkeeper, for it is impossible that anything would have been known of such an account here had it not been presented: it appearing furthermore from the pay book of this Directorate of the year 1760 that he, Esmond, absented himself from the Company on the last day of April of that same year. The 17th of September. Six bonds cancelled for Kassembazaar. Resolution to maintain the servants regarding the expired first term for payment of a certain compensation imposed on the Kassembazaar second. Points of rescription. Having also produced in this meeting the three bonds which, in the hope of obtaining three lakh Rupees from the former duwan Nedekoemaar, were granted in the name of Gohordas as per the Resolution of the 22nd of May last, as well as the three others which were subsequently drawn up in sonnewaal Rupees in place of the others and, like the previous ones, sent to Kassembazaer, from where they were recently received back, the same have been torn up, and it is understood to keep this note thereof. Upon the letter from the Kassembazaar servants dated the 10th of this current month, mentioning that the second there, the junior merchant Pieter Brueijs, undertook to answer within the fixed time against the compensation imposed on him, mentioned in the Resolution of the 16th of March last, and would also endeavor to provide another guarantor in place of the deceased one, it was observed on this occasion that the first term of the compensation imposed on him on the aforementioned date, the payment of which he was permitted by the resolution of the 13th of April of the same year to make in two installments, having already expired on the 16th of March last, had nevertheless not yet been satisfied, and even that not the slightest mention was made thereof; wherefore it was decided to write to the Kassembazaar servants to have this fulfilled forthwith. Purchase of doosoeties approved. Decision to let the servants retain a part of the silver. Bar copper to be passed. The memorandum of durbar expenses in the year 1764/1765 inserted. Furthermore, it was understood to approve that the aforementioned servants advanced sicca rupees 2000:- or fl. 3150:- for the purchase of doosoeties. Having received from the Mint 66000:- Rupees which the servants dispatched, and orders being requested with regard to the total amount of the silver sent up, as to whether the same must be dispatched or whether a portion may be retained for the service of the factory; it is understood to grant permission for the latter, as they indeed require that assistance there and people here are currently reasonably well provided for, while it was also approved to provide them again with other silver shortly. The 514 lb of Japanese bar copper which remained in balance there upon taking inventory, and for the sale of which they were qualified by letter of the 2nd of July of the current year, having been sold off for rupees 82: 17:14 6/9 per 100 lb, being an advance of 175 percent, it is understood to approve the same. With relation to the buildings mentioned in the aforementioned letter of the administrators dated 29 August, stating that their fears regarding the dilapidated state of the Lodge had already been confirmed in several respects, as the heavy rains had not only caused the surrounding wall on the southeast side to sink and give way to such an extent that it could no longer be approached with any safety, for which reason two peons were placed at the entrances to prevent accidents, but also that the wall of Warehouse No. 3 had likewise cracked and given way, so that the administrators had found themselves obliged to have it demolished out of fear that its collapse might cost the life of one or another passerby, the passage there being very crowded; as a result of which the flat roof, which had in vain been shored up with props, collapsed due to the rottenness of the beams and laths, so that the lodge lay entirely open on that side, making repair most urgently necessary; while moreover the interior wall in the house of the second in command, which had still remained standing, was cracked from bottom to top by the great amount of fallen water; which occurrences having been discussed, it was, by reason of necessity, resolved to authorize the administrators.

Hoevenaar condemned once again to the fine imposed on his salary, without discount. And although the aforementioned collective gifts this year amount to ƒ2767:4:- purchase price and ƒ1865:—:— sale price more than the previous year, and ƒ732:19:8 purchase price and ƒ2157:14:8 sale price more than was gifted two years ago; nevertheless, considering the reasons set down at the foot of the first Memorandum, that the adverse difference between purchase and sale price of the deliveries to the Regents was originally due to the financial year 1763/4, because in the most recently concluded financial year, the broadcloths, gold fabrics, telescopes, porcelain, mirrors, etc., which were to serve as gifts, had to be purchased at the bazaar; it was approved and agreed to pass the one and the other, subject to the esteemed approval of the Supreme Government of the Indies. By the Bookkeeper and Third Person, as compensation for three months, since Ludolff Hoevenaar, regarding the fine of three months' salary imposed on him pursuant to the formal rescript of August 1764 and the resolution of this meeting of October following, alongside the Junior Merchant Martinus Koning, for having assisted 38. the 17th September The cash account of July passed.
