The arrangement that Their High Noble Mightinesses were pleased to make in Their High Noble Mightinesses' resolution of 19 July of the previous year concerning the artillery in this directorship, no longer taking place due to the sending away of the same, and it having already been resolved by our latest decision to leave the arrived necessities for 10 pieces of cannon of 8 lb on board and 134 23 March can find no more room here it is understood to reduce the gunpowder and that the equipage supervisor for that purpose shall serve with a report and to send back to Batavia, so that regarding this point no other business remains than concerning the gunpowder, of which Their High Noble Mightinesses have pleased to set the provision at 7600 lb, namely 4000 lb for 10 pieces of cannon of 8 lb and 3600 lb for the ordnance on the vessels; but since the heavy artillery has been sent away and the heaviest of the pieces that we currently have on hand shoots only 4 lb of iron, all of which we shall need to retain in order to supply the vessels from the stock placed on the wharf whenever any on them should become unserviceable or be lost through an accident, it was deemed proper to reduce the said provision of gunpowder proportionally, and to that end to have our equipage supervisor serve with a detailed report on how many pieces of 4, 3, 2, 1 and ½ pound are on hand, how many and which of them are on the wharf, and how many are placed on the vessels, along with adding thereto the required quantity of gunpowder, calculating 135 23 March The order by the three extracts mentioned in the text shall serve as precise instruction as well as what is said regarding the bails calculating 100 shots for each cannon on the wharf and 50 for each piece on the vessels. 162 Points of Resolution to Brootchia The 5th of April Concerning the memorandum of linen prices sent over by the factors And since the suppliers here are still unwilling The servants from there having sent over a memorandum of the prices for which they undertake to procure the linens for the current year, and in which the kiesdhaars goods, that is, the colored linens, are set at the previous year's price, and since the suppliers of those cloths would rather forgo the procurement than allow any reduction, and as they say, deliberately ruin themselves, although on diverse sorts of the raw linens some reduction had been stipulated, it was therefore deemed fit to answer the factors that we have hitherto not been able to bring the suppliers to any quote of prices, seeing that they, as the Director, who as well as the Honorable Second had already been in negotiations with them on various occasions concerning this, declared they would above all hear of no reduction of prices, but since it is nevertheless necessary to wait for that in order to see where one can contract for the goods 163 The 5th of April To reply to the adjacent points What those servants communicate concerning the Niquaniassen And the astonishment over such a sudden change goods at the lowest price, that we shall convey our final decision to them as soon as we have confronted the prices quoted by them against those we expect from the suppliers, all the more as we cannot think that a delay of a few days can cause much hindrance, when one considers how late the previous year's contracting was done at Brootchea, however much we are otherwise convinced that the greatest speed in that case is the best: Proceeding next to the resumption of the latest letter from the factors, in which they communicate that of the remaining 8 bales of Niquaniassen that still had to be delivered on the last collection for India, few pieces arrived that would be acceptable, it was therefore deemed fit to express to them our astonishment that from a supplier who, as far as we have seen proof of it, has consisted of nothing but good merchandise, the remainder has been found so bad, 164 The 5th of April Upon inspection of the delivered bales, the result thereof will be communicated to them The specification of the fire buckets amounting to ƒ 31:15. — and that we cannot imagine how it can go so quickly from one extreme to the other, that is, from good to unacceptable; and furthermore that although we know that in this season it is impossible for such good linens to be woven as in the rainy season, it is nevertheless surprising that so soon after the departure of the factor Kronenberg such a great deterioration takes place; but that one will be even more amazed at this if the linens brought along by the said Kronenberg are found good or at least passable, as he assures us, which one will be able to discover upon the inspection, and the result of which one will then communicate to them. The specification sent over by those servants of the making of 16 pieces of leather fire buckets amounting to ƒ 31:15 — was deemed fit to be passed, as well as that of the necessary sight gifts upon arrival 165 The 5th of April and the sight gifts given to the amount of ƒ 124:10. — along with those incurred travel expenses passed but the amounts taken from the cash box for Kroonenberg to be accounted for by him arrival of the new factor to the amount of ƒ 124:10. — and since one came to see thereby that the same were ƒ 7:10:— less than according to the last example, we shall therefore express to them our satisfaction over that reduction, since in these times of economy nothing can appear more agreeable to us than an appropriate frugality concerning the distribution of the Company's funds, as nothing is more readily gained than that which is saved in that manner. From which it becomes evident that the nutmegs that are trodden with lime turn out to be more disadvantageous by 31 7/8 lb at 2½ per cent, rather than there being found a deficit on the cited 20 chests after deduction of the overweight of 22¾ lb, 1 1/8 per cent.
