Sugar Powder was shipped at Cheribon in this vessel in 1500 canns: lb 604218¼ And the same upon receipt here contained net only: 580050 lb 24168¼: 4.—.— said sweetness was, upon the complaints of the merchants, inspected by order of the Director by special commissioners, see annexed Report No. 5, and by them 119 canns were sampled, and thereby found only 15 canns such as are ordinarily brought, 47 ditto browner and 57 ditto still browner in quality fallen. For the rest, regarding the quality, one could say nothing other than that both the nuts from the lime and those garbled from the cloves looked reasonably well, it appearing also at the same time that the limed nuts were subject to a greater worm damage of nuts, calculated at 28 1/4 lb per vessel, than the nuts that had lain with the cloves. 178 The 15th of April that, provided the commissioners take the oath, it shall be written off in the books, as well as the report, and the adjacent regarding the powder sugar. the method of treating the nuts solely with lime as opposed to those strewn with cloves makes a disadvantageous difference of 31 1/8 lb or 2½ percent roughly, and furthermore that, after deduction of 3¾ lb overweight obtained by the nuts strewn with cloves, there is still a shortage of 224 lb or 1 1/8 percent on the entire parcel due to the underweight given by those that are strewn solely with lime, but that, as the abovementioned commissioners state in their report concerning the quality of the nuts, those treated in both ways looked reasonably well: thus it was agreed to pass the aforesaid underweight, provided the commissioners confirm their report under oath, and to write off the missing nuts and transfer them to spoiled spices and send them to Batavia, and also to offer their High Excellencies the said report separately among the enclosures. In dutiful compliance with Your Honorable Respected verbal orders, the undersigned, being specially commissioned thereto, proceeded to the Company outer warehouse and there had 119 canisters of powder sugar probed from the consignment of the ship Bleyswyk and found them to be as we have the honor to present below to Your Honorable Respected Lord, namely: 15 canisters white or equal to the ordinary consignment; 47 ditto brownish; and 57 ditto very brown. We have endeavored to comply with the highly respected recommendation of Their High Excellencies, made in their letter of the 18th of October 1760, to state the numbers of the bad canisters, but this was in vain, since the canisters were marked only with the weight and some Chinese characters. Ebbenau. is only partly good and many pieces 581 The 15th of April To have that root sorted out, and to send the bad to Batavia, while all efforts made have so far ended in vain. pieces among it have been found changed and worm-eaten, it was judged, upon the question of the Lord Director, that one could not or should not send the entire quantity back to Batavia, as was done with that of Sloterdyk which was entirely spoiled, because some good was mixed in here, and it was therefore decided to have those roots sorted out, and to send the bad ones back to Batavia with this same vessel, writing off its cost to profit and loss, but to sell the good ones in order, through the profit to be gained thereon, if possible to procure for the Company the purchase costs of the entire parcel, which will depend on the quantity that will be found good upon sorting. The Lord Director further communicated that His Honor, for more than a month now, together with the Second, had made every effort to move the suppliers to some reduction of the prices of the linens, as compared to those of last year, 182. To which they cannot agree sought and they in the meantime show His Honour the reasons, adding further that however much His Honour had put before them the expectation that Their High Honours had that through the small supply of only two favourable cargoes the sugar would have found a better market, such had been fruitless since they declared they could not spend more for this parcel, but at the same time assured that Their High Honours would not have been mistaken in that idea if only the quality of that supplied sugar did not obstruct the higher price that one might certainly with reason expect from such a small supply and which would also have followed; at the same time requesting that His Honour would be pleased to allow himself to be convinced by his own eyes of the poor quality of this sweetness, which by that which was presented to the commissioners and under his upon their and the headmen's request had been inspected by commissioners, to all of which His Honour having given them no definitive answer yet 189 The 25 April referred to the meeting and approved yet being unable to object to that, had referred the Brokers to the meeting, before which they were ordered to appear, after the prices for the remaining goods shall have been resumed. The 25th of April To abandon the white sawagesjes and the broad whole white baftas as well as the cotton yarns. It was therefore resolved not to contract for the white sawagesjes and the broad whole white baftas, although the former could be obtained for 4 and the latter for ½ percent less than the latest price, because these differ too greatly from that which Their Right Honorable Worships require for that linen. However, for reasons given regarding this in the past year by resolution of the 14th of July, a contract will be made for the narrow whole white baftas. But as the suppliers, neither here nor in Brootchia, have been able to state the prices of the cotton yarns on account of the great disadvantageous difference, and since these will certainly not fall to a reasonable price, one was obliged again to abandon the procurement thereof. Regarding the demand for India, it was noted with great satisfaction in the aforementioned memorandum at Souratte on the 25th of April. Regarding the Indian demand, at Souratte the prices of the large and small karikams and the black half ditto, item whole broad white baftas have been reduced; however, the first-mentioned flag cloth, the narrow ordinary tapekankenia, the photassen of 12 asta which are 11 percent more expensive, and at Brootchia those of the broad whole black baftas, the narrow half ditto, item broad whole white ones, have some reduction; but for the rest, the flag cloth, the narrow ordinary tapekankenia, the photassen, alongside all the silk patholen, except those of 12 asta which are 11 percent more expensive because Their High Excellencies demand the same ¼ asta wider than customary at this main office, and the broad black kangams, kannekyns, and niguaniassen at the subordinate Brootchia, have all been set at the prices latest paid for them. The Lord Director stating regarding the silk patholen that Their High Excellencies demanded those of 9 asta from the suppliers with the width of 3 asta; the suppliers as well as the heads of the weavers had made clear to His Honor that, as they usually hold only 2 asta, they were not able to weave them in that manner, because they then cannot make them otherwise than with sewn-on edges, which can always be seen. The 25th of April Patholen of 9 asta with the width of 3 ditto, which cannot be marked in such a manner, and found good to contract for them according to the customary measure. Adding thereto that if they absolutely must weave those cloths in such a manner, they see no chance of getting two ready in four months, wherefore His Honor asked how to act regarding this. The assembly, persuaded of the caprice of the workmen in Souratta, who will not undertake anything contrary to their custom, and that one would thus make fruitless attempts to force them to make this sort of patholen as Their High Excellencies wish to have them, found it good to contract for them according to the customary measure. Thereupon the Lord Commander reminded the assembly of the resolution of the 6th of January last and, pursuant thereto, what was written to Their High Excellencies in our letter of the 12th thereafter regarding the Brootchia handkerchiefs which they have been pleased to demand, and regarding which, while sending samples, we requested Their High Excellencies' orders. With which the assembly being satisfied, they spoke about the chintzes that were demanded for Batavia, of which, however, no purchase was ever made here, and several samples were laid on the table to accept the raw linen accordingly of such length, width, and quality as Their High Excellencies require; which pieces were then designated as fixed samples, with approval to have the suppliers procure these cloths against the prices stated in the memorandum. The Cambay Governor Mominchan, ƒ 20991: 5: —, being the amount robbed by him from the Honorable Company at Jamboeser, for which he indeed obligated himself by a handwritten bond dated 8 January 1760 to settle this sum in installments within the year, or if any goods might be sent to his government, to offset it against the tolls; and whereas by a letter of 14 November which the Right Honorable Director was pleased to address to Factor Kroonenberg, with a missive to be handed over to His Excellency who was present at Brootchia, with the recommendation to the said Factor on that occasion to clear himself with that Nawab regarding that which he has always appealed to in respect of his debt; which order the factor did not fail to execute, as can be found in an incoming letter of 4 December of that factory written hither in the past year, wherein the said Kroonenberg informed His Excellency in emphatic terms that it appeared very intricate to Your Honor that a gentleman of his character, having granted a handwritten document, thereafter resorted to frivolous excuses and refused to pay what was truly owed. 222. 25th April His Excellency thereupon requested to speak no further of this for the present, but assured that before he departed from Brootchia he would make his intentions known, which result turned out to be this: he assured that he was currently unable and requested Your Honor to have patience for some time yet, as he currently had an enterprise whereby, if God blessed him, Your Honor could be assured that kindness would be rewarded with friendship, and that he would always follow the sentiments of his Lord father, who was a true friend of the Dutch, and settle the said debt. On this, we can remark nothing other than that it is to be considered whether the Company, through these idle promises, will ever be able to obtain anything of it. 4. Cabbelbay and Fagger Uddien, Moorish merchants, for ƒ 11403: 4: — for the 98729 lb of powdered sugar sold and delivered to them at Dendrajapour; we can say nothing other than what was already stated by the Examiners of the Trade books of the year 1761/62 in their report dated 18 March 1762. And whereas Their Right Noblenesses, in their honored letter of 14 August 1762, wherein among other things Their Noblenesses were pleased to say about that debt that it is all the same whether those merchants and their heirs are insolvent, because the Company must be indemnified, if not by the principals, at least by those who credited them so lightheartedly; concerning which, the junior merchant Johannes, having then been at Rajapour, who recently in his submitted report dated 13 March last says that he did not fail to demand that debt, but notwithstanding that much effort was made for it, there is little likelihood, and in conscience says he has no great expectation, since the rulers, probably according to the custom of the native regents, will have seized that amount for themselves. Right Honorable Ruling Lord, Esteemed Councilors, We, the undersigned overseers of the buildings, for reasons mentioned in the Resolution of the 23rd of March last, having been ordered to investigate whether the former military guardhouse standing at the Honorable Company's horse stable could not very well be made into a hospital or quarters for the disabled servants of the Honorable Company, have, in order to comply with that decision, betaken ourselves thither, and in the presence of the chief surgeon of this Directorate, accurately inspected everything, and therein, according to our judgment and the understanding of the said chief surgeon, found no impossibility, provided that Your Right Honorable would only please allow some small repairs to be made to the hall, the kitchen to be repaired, and a water well standing there, though not used for many years, to be cleaned and plastered. We have also, through a native master carpenter and mason, had an estimate drawn up as closely as possible of the defects that absolutely must be remedied, indicating what all this would cost; which master workmen have made known to us that the required repair could be done for f 650 to f 700 or close thereto. From a judicial minute it has appeared that the skipper Begom and the commissioners for the spices have taken the oath for the shortage in his cargo. which will be recommended most emphatically; while, on account of more pressing affairs, the business regarding a letter received from Brootchia and the reply thereto must be postponed until after the departure of the Bleyswyk. Subsequently, a judicial minute was submitted as proof that the skipper of the said vessel, for the spices found short in his cargo, and the commissioners in whose presence took place the garbling of the 20 chests with unapproved nutmegs strewn with lime against 20 others strewn with cloves, had duly taken the oath before the Council of Justice, of which it was thought fit to keep record here.
