From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764. we believe, subject to correction, that a complete renewal thereof will cost not much more than a proper repair. We therefore most humbly request Your Right Honours to furnish us regarding this with your esteemed orders, the more so because we can assure Your Right Honours that a post at Adjarhadja is, if not for trade, at least for security against an invasion by the English, exceedingly necessary. With respect to the outstanding debts there of the former resident Van Seijfferth, we have not failed successively to issue the necessary reminders; but during the past financial year nothing more has come in from this than what we had the honour to communicate to Your Right Honours in our previous letter, and to our regret we can promise nothing positive regarding this. The trade conducted at the office of Chinco turned out reasonably well in the year 1764, since according to the return under No. 13 a purchase amount of ƒ60743:11:– has been turned over, with a profit of ƒ26789:11:8 or 44 1/8 per cent, calculating the gold at ƒ378:— per mark fine as was done in the past year, when on a purchase of ƒ30092:1:8 a profit was made of ƒ13940:3:8 or 46 1/3 per cent. In contrast to which sale there has been collected there From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764. there a quantity of 31000 lb of pepper and 1476 89/100 thail of gold; which shows that the collection of products this year far exceeds that of the past year. The account books of that office have been closed as usual, inspected, and found to be according to orders, and have brought to the credit of this head office for the net profits of the year 1763/4 ƒ11345:1:–, and to the debit for expenses ƒ6227:13:–, according to the accompanying balance sheet under No. 14; but the gold being calculated at ƒ378 as in the past year, the aforementioned profits amount to ƒ20775:5:8, from which it is evident that this office has advanced by a sum of ƒ14547:12:8, whereas in the past year the profits exceeded the expenses by only ƒ5324:17:8, showing a difference in favour of ƒ9222:15:–. The balances on hand there as of the last day of August amounted to a capital of ƒ164822:14:8, among which were 1030 thail 9 1/4 maas of assayed gold and 345 [illegible] of outstanding gold, together with 22937 1/2 lb of pepper; of which returns the pepper has already been dispatched per the bark De Mossel, and the gold is to be collected by the bearer of this and transferred to Your Right Honours. Having hereby now rendered the required report to Your Right Honours concerning the subordinate offices, From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764. we proceed to present to Your Right Honours the general state of the Honourable Company on this coast, as it turned out under date of the last day of August 1764. The trade and pay books of this commandery have been inspected according to Your Right Honours' esteemed orders, in the manner as is more fully mentioned in our resolution of the 1st of November, and since they were found to be accurate and according to order, we have granted the necessary authorization to close them; and the delivered balance sheet that accompanies this under No. 15 has shown that the general office has been credited for net profits with ƒ99504:3:– and debited for general expenses with ƒ88504:1:–, the gold being calculated at ƒ331:10:11 4/43 per mark fine; but when, as in the past year, there is added to the aforementioned profits the difference in the price of gold at ƒ378 per mark fine amounting to ƒ55004:9:8, they amount to a total of ƒ154508:12:8, which shows that this coast in the year 1764, after deduction of all expenses, has yielded ƒ66004:11:8; and since in the past year the expenses surpassed the profits by ƒ27575:7:12, it is evident from this that the affairs of the Honourable Company here in the financial year 1763/4 turned out more advantageous than in the year before, by a sum of From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764. of ƒ93579:19:4, which we trust will not be unwelcome to Your Right Honours. The general balances on this coast as of the last day of August 1764 amounted to a capital of ƒ625471:14:–, and those of Padang in particular to ƒ309201:15:–, among which returns were found 267 [illegible] marks fine of assayed gold, 42875 lb of ordinary white benzoin, together with a case of camphor oil; all of which, along with what has been collected since, is to be transferred to Your Right Honours with the bearer of this and the ship Westvriesland. Concerning the outstanding debts, we take the liberty respectfully to refer to what is mentioned regarding them in the balance sheet of this coast, since nothing has occurred in that regard since our last letter; and to this chapter we merely add that in our session of the 1st of November we deemed it proper to omit the unappraised effects from the trade journal, in order to keep a separate booklet for them, in accordance with Your Right Honours' esteemed orders of the 30th of July 1753, which we request may not displease Your Right Honours; and proceeding herewith to Domestic affairs, we have the honour

From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764: To inform Your High Nobles that the transfer of the trade warehouses executed under date of the ultimate of August, of which we made mention in our previous communication, was subsequently sworn under oath, and after confrontation against the trade books was found to agree in all parts; as is more fully stated in our resolution of the 26th of October. The former Bookkeeper and Resident of Natters, Ian Abraham van Moschel, having been condemned by political resolution dated the 15th of November anno 1762 to a fine of ƒ1500:—:—, and having instead been debited on his pay-account with a sum of ƒ2000:—:—, addressed himself to us in the month of October with a petition, in which he humbly requested to be relieved of the ƒ500:—:— charged too much to his account; and since we regarded this as an error, we consented to his request, and most humbly pray Your High Nobles to be pleased to approve this, for such reasons as are more fully stated in the said petition inserted in our resolution of the 12th of October. In our last, we had, among other things, the honor to inform Your High Nobles that upon the unloading of the cargo brought by the sloop De Goudvink, 136 pieces of linen in sort were found wet and damaged; From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764: and that we would have the same sold by auction; which subsequently took place, and it appearing from the proceeds received from this that a profit of 10 1/3 per cent had still been achieved on it, we therefore decided in our meeting of the 12th of October to have this sale written off on the books to the debit of the Honorable Company's cash and to defer the disposition regarding the lesser percentages until the receipt of Your High Nobles' most honored orders in that regard. It having pleased Your High Nobles, by the invoice of the aforementioned sloop, to have various items debited and credited to this command, we have settled them as stated in our resolution of the 12th of October; but whereas the former Assayer and present Pay Bookkeeper Willem Frederik Mersz was thereby ordered to pay into the Honorable Company's cash an amount of ƒ939:12:—, and he was absolutely unable to satisfy this, we therefore, upon his most urgent petition to be debited for this on his pay-account, approved in our session of the 26th of October to grant him this request, for this and other reasons which are extensively stated in his petition inserted in the resolution of the aforementioned date; and we do not doubt From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764: that Your High Nobles, after reading thereof, will confirm our disposition in this matter with Your favorable approval. It having been made known to us by the indigenous merchants residing here that there was a great scarcity of cash among the community, and that this had its origin in the prohibition of the export of gold, because cash was now being exported instead of gold; with the request that they might be relieved with the so sorely needed currency, in exchange for gold at 19 adas the real; and as we found this request not altogether unfounded, we resolved in our session of the 3rd of this month to grant the same to the extent that for now, under caution of restitution, a sum of 5000 rixdollars should be exchanged in the manner as mentioned; and since this has been carried into effect, we take the liberty hereby to most humbly request Your High Nobles for Your favorable approval; as well as that it may please You to furnish us for the future with Your most honored orders on that subject; and since we know nothing further to report regarding this main section for the present that merits Your High Nobles' attention, we proceed to the article From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of December 1764: of the Servants, among whom nothing else has occurred since our last, except that, upon the complaints made by the Resident of Baros, Sieben, regarding the insolent and disobedient conduct of Sergeant Nicolaas Diederich sent up by him, we degraded the same in our session of the 7th of December to private soldier at ƒ9 per month, to be sent from here to another place in that capacity. Of the 25 military personnel sent over by Your High Nobles per the ship Westvriesland, no more than 15 heads have arrived here; and as well as many have died and deserted since the ultimate of June, we still remain in the same shortage of people that we had the honor to make known to Your High Nobles in our last; and it is for that reason that we take the liberty anew to most humbly request Your High Nobles for that number of men which is still lacking from the regulation sent over under date of the ultimate of June, since we find ourselves unable to relieve anyone from here, nor to provide the subordinate stations with the necessary people. And, since for the present we know nothing more to add to this, we request, regarding that of which no special mention is made herein, to be respectfully permitted to refer to our successive resolutions which accompany this in copy under No. 17; while we furthermore merely let follow here the brief invoice of what is transferred from here to Your Right Honorables with the bearer of this, and consists of the following: 196 43/64 marks of melted gold, in 24 bars from No. 93 to No. 116, in 2 sealed boxes No. 17 and 18, at ƒ 49: 10: the 3/12 carat, comes to ƒ 57,972: 9: —. 100 lb quicksilver in a case No. 2, brought here unrequested in the year 1762 per the ship Deunisveld: ƒ 311: 7: —. 1 set of nested weights in the said case, recently brought per the Goudvink for Aijerbangies, for which another is requested: ƒ 29: 8: 8, [making together] ƒ 340: 15: 8. 30,907 lb black winnowed pepper in 464 sacks at ƒ 19: 4: the picol of 125 lb: ƒ 4,747: 6: —. After this had been made ready and the bearer thereof had already been cleared, so that we believed we could let the same depart on the aforementioned date, we were unexpectedly prevented by the heavy rain and the high runoff from delivering the returns on board in time, which was the cause that the same only comes to begin the return voyage via Chinco and Adjarhadja on the 6th of January. The Chinese Tansoelong, Suajenoko, Tienmang, and Ongiang having made a request by petition to return with that vessel, we have, on the foundation of Your Right Honorables' very respected order, granted their request, provided they pay the customary transport and board at Batavia. Translation of a Malay letter written by Radja Baros, Radja Ibrahim, and the collective regents of Baros to Their Right Honorables, the Honorable High Indian Government, received at Batavia on the 7th of February anno 1765: After the usual preamble, it contains the following: Furthermore, we have well received Their Right Honorables' letter, welcomed it ceremoniously according to custom, and at the same time perceived with pleasure from the same the constant peace and the receipt as well as the recompense for the six small boxes of benzoin which Radja Baros alone sent, but all the panghulus were in expectation that Their Right Honorables had also dispatched gifts to them, and since we collectively are in great need, this causes trouble, and although Their Right Honorables are now possibly displeased that we have sent no benzoin and camphor as a gift, we nevertheless hope for their order and compassion. Regarding the counter-gift for the gifts delivered at the time of the Commander who has already departed for Souratten (which was, according to estimate, 4 years ago), we have waited long, which Their Right Honorables well know, hoping therefore for their compassion, for we are very poor. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765: Recently we had the honor to give Their High Mightinesses an ample report in our humble letters of the 27th of December regarding the result of trade on this Coast in the book-year 1763/4, and as it appears therefrom that the Honorable Company, after deducting all charges and losses, has realized a net profit in that year of a sum of f 66004:11:8, the gold being calculated at f 378:—:— the mark fine, as was done in the preceding year; so we conclude from this that although the trade here has been in our favor for some years past, it cannot be said to be decaying, and even less that this Coast should be considered a cancer in the Honorable Company's state; the more so since the Honorable Company, besides the convenience of the gold still on it, also profits so much on the same that from it the wages that are paid in Europe and other profitable returns from the costs of the necessary ships can, in our opinion, be made good. However much we have made known our thoughts regarding the disadvantageous trade here in our previous letters of the 25th of October 1762, even to such an extent that this Coast could not be improved by any greater expansion of the Company's trade, it would nevertheless be particularly pleasing to us if sufficient reasons should appear to us to depart from our aforementioned premise, or indeed to see it refuted by facts. But not perceiving those indications as yet, we must until then, although to our regret, admit the position mentioned in the well-known memorandum of retrenchment: namely, that this Coast is at present to be considered nothing other than a cancer in the Company's state, which is further depicted therein so desperately that one would almost have to consider its improvement as hopeless. When we also consider through how many diverse ways and by what different means people have attempted to effect the desired improvement here, though each time in vain, then at one time by an established but again withdrawn, or, as they say, virtually self-dissolving trade society, then again by an opened free navigation, then again by a recently enacted and still subsisting prohibition of all trade to private individuals and subordinates, without any essential improvement having been noticed, at least until now, the prospect for the future certainly remains not very favorable. There seems, however, nothing more advisable regarding the manner in which the trade of this Coast can best be continued, than to keep and maintain the present footing and method, under which all private trade, indeed even all competition with that of the Company, is forbidden, provided that the penalties established against the offenders are strictly executed; so that it appears to us that the method which is presently in practice will always be found to be the best. However much we have expressed ourselves against the expansion of the trade in the manner aforementioned, we do not wish to oppose it insofar as that expansion could turn out to the essential advantage of the Company, as Your Honor also explains to this ministry by letter of the 31st of July 1761. And considering that we remain assured that Your Honor's views square with ours in this respect, we cannot but imagine that very weighty reasons, and thus entirely different ones than that of the ample supply in Batavia, must have been operative and have persuaded Your Honor to send to this Coast such an ample quantity of textiles, to the extent that Your Honor has had conveyed hither by the ship the Hercules a number of 553 packs, to which added the 300 packs on hand here, this makes a number of 853 packs; and that Your Honor had furthermore made a promise to increase that number. As long as the English are in possession of the lands lying between Ayer Bangis and Baros, namely Natal and Tappanooly, and the trade of camphor and benzoin between them remains divided, we cannot see that a further expansion than the present one can be of any use to the Honorable Company, as their intervention has harmed the trade in those gums, of which the Honorable Company was formerly sole master, to such an extent that we can no longer even regard the Baros trading post as a profitable post. Concerning the textiles mentioned here, whereof at the end of August 1764 no more than a remainder of 138 undesirable packs remained at Padang, the rest all being gradually disposed of, and no more than what is needed for one year having been requisitioned and now received, we can now give Their High Mightinesses this assurance: that no greater capital funds are on hand here than are necessarily required for the continuation of trade, and our further efforts will be directed towards advancing the Honorable Company's advantage in all matters as much as possible.

The quantities of salt which have been successively supplied upon the dispatched requisitions were arranged in such a manner that we were able to make do with them completely, so that by a larger supply thereof the consumption could in no way have been increased, while increasing by 500 packs of unwanted linens, indeed, regarding the transport thereof, more necessity seems to have been placed than regarding the transport of the salt, since Your Honor, upon the ministers' requisition of 400 to 500 lasts of that salt, provisionally satisfying it with only 100 lasts in Your Honor's letter of 17 October 1761, state to have judged the remaining space of the vessel Prefara mentioned therein better suited for the transport of linens than for that of salt, whereas Your Honor knows how much importance the Company, which alone and exclusively must and ought to conduct the trade in that salt here, attaches to this Coast being sufficiently provided with it, not only to keep away all private supply thereby, but especially to hold back the coastal peoples so that they do not give themselves over to the making of salt; which latter seems to be in one's hands if one does not let the native suffer lack of that indispensable article. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765. The actual condition of the native salt manufactures we had the honor to make known in our humble reply letter of 15 September of last year 1760 and 25 October 1762, and we have found that the ruin of those native so-called salt manufactures seems to be kept in sight; and as we for the present cannot view that matter otherwise, we take the liberty to respectfully adhere to our statement and the proposal made therewith for the reduction of the existing purchase price, and specifically to fix the same at 40 rixdollars, as it had been previously, as it might be very alarming that the now fixed purchase price of 55 rixdollars would prejudice the sale and, on the contrary, favor smuggling or the manufacture on the beaches, we would therefore prefer to see the aforementioned established purchase price somewhat reduced, which we gladly leave to Your Honor's further consideration, under this remark however, that the dispatch of the 100 lasts of salt intended for this Coast, because the ship De Waakzaamheid met with an unexpected disaster, had not attained its dispatch in the month of October 1761, as we had the honor to inform Their Right Honorable Worships in our humble fundamental memorandum so much in progress upon their honored letters dated 30 September 1761, as to what concerns the selling price of the salt, that the fixed price of 2 stivers of gold per last in no way diminishes the consumption thereof. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765. [illegible] but its dispatch, as appears from Your Honor's letter of 23 October 1761, having had to remain postponed until the month of April 1762, that interim period of six months must have caused a great embarrassment for that salt here, or otherwise supplies Your Honor with convincing proof that, however much the Company is said to carry on the salt trade here alone, others participate in it as well. We can well admit that the previously existing commercial society and the opened free navigation may still at present cause the Company to feel the prejudicial consequences that would have been caused by the oversupply of the most popular goods, especially those of linens, and that some time would therefore be required to bring the trade back into full bloom; but we cannot then reconcile therewith the excessive supply of the abovementioned linens, since they will then not be able to obtain a prompt sale here, and this copious supply can serve no other purpose than to increase the remainders, even those of unwanted varieties, of which an amount of over 96,000 guilders was on hand at Poulo Chinco alone. The entire stock of linens at the comptoir Poulo Chinco having been reduced to an amount of 83,884 guilders and 5 stivers as of the end of August 1764, we trust that it will appear from this to the satisfaction of Their Right Honorable Worships that the supply there is also not greater than what the trade necessarily requires. From our dispatched letter to Their Right Honors dated 27 December 1764 and our resolution of the 3rd preceding, Their Right Honorable Worships will be pleased to observe that the same reasons which are cited here alongside have moved us to desist from sending some cruising vessels to the north, and that we have only been able to find good to occupy Tapis with a Bugis corporal and 4 privates in order to maintain as much as possible the decaying trade in Benzoin. However, Your Honor's adopted measures, more fully detailed in Your Honor's resolutions of 4 December 1759, 18 and 25 March 1760, having no other goal than to make trade flourish and to multiply the collection of gold, we hope that the same will fulfill that intended objective; but when we consider that to achieve this, a means of considerable burden is proposed by the ministers, namely: that of more cruising vessels to keep all the Company's competitors off this Coast, and thus to keep it clean, as it were, we understand very easily with Your Honor that thereby the profits still obtained in appearance would be altogether destroyed.

From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February, 1765: Draak and the Lieftallige are employed for the financial year 1763/64, and for the passage between this Coast and Batavia no other vessels, to say nothing of the long detention of these and various of the said bottoms, and of the lost voyage of the present financial year, the shipment was made in the same manner. Except for the ship Overschie and the barks, the expenses of the three sloops that perform service on this Coast are made good here, and borne among their own charges. We say the profits still apparent; for if on the one hand one considers that the advantages, after deducting the accrued expenses in the year 1763/64, could not even reach 40000 guilders, and on the other hand one reflects upon the large capital expended for the trade of this Coast; the numerous ships and vessels, which to the number of six, namely the Hercules, Bronstee and the Waakzaamheid, together with the sloops the Goudvink, the Roos, and Nagapatnam, are employed, or, as far as the Waakzaamheid is concerned, at least intended for that purpose; and if one furthermore considers the risk and the uncertainties to which those so-called profits are still subject, your Honors will easily concede to us that the said advance of nearly 40000 guilders contains no reality in itself, but rather, upon an accurate calculation, would turn out to be a loss, especially in so far as there have also been employed in this trade such sorts of linens as are customary to yield considerable advantages both here in this country and in the Indies, and for the disposal of which one would not have needed this Coast because of its unimportance; not to speak of the bankruptcies which are suffered here, of which the residency of Adjarhadja provides a convincing, although a very bad, proof, concerning which it is to be feared that, notwithstanding all precautions taken, the Company will once again be the suffering party, being absorbed in such a manner that if we must await from this the notable improvement of affairs here, the same would cost the Company very dearly. Regarding the bankruptcies which arose here a few years ago, although they cannot as yet be regarded as a final loss, certainly an all too generous credit contributed greatly to this; however, we must testify that without lending out, no trade has ever been carried on this Coast, and also that without it, it cannot be negotiated in such a manner. The difference caused therein by the accompanying order consists solely in this: that formerly the debtors were known to us through the Honorable Company's books, and that now, for some years past, they have remained known only to the factors; which, upon the decease of the Chinco's head Elias, was found to have no good consequence, as one has had many difficulties on that account due to the disorderliness of his private affairs. Such damages having their source in the granting of ample and all too often reckless credit, the final prohibition against it has been of the utmost necessity, and it is to be wished that the Company may obtain a speedy liquidation or indemnification regarding the outstanding debts to the amount of f 78600:14:—, which we most earnestly recommend to the officials. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765. West Frisian duiten to an amount of 1000 rijksdaalders have been successively accounted for. That earth and filth have been charged to the Honorable Company's account as good gums, we cannot in truth affirm, since we have never seen such a thing, and out of fear of wrongfully accusing our predecessors, we dare not even presuppose that this took place; since experience has taught us that it sometimes happens that among large parcels of benzoin of the second or third sort, one or more chests are occasionally found which are less cleaned of the bark of the benzoin trees, which is always found among it upon receipt, than the others. And it is for that reason that we indeed find the established classification of the sorts to be good, but by no means the prices stipulated for them, for which we are unable to supply such select gums, because the native can obtain much more for them from the English collectors. And to our regret, this will be all too clear to Their Right Honorable Excellencies from the slight satisfaction that has been given to their demand since that time, and which still cannot be done otherwise. Other parcels having been sent to Batavia when it was immediately bartered for gold, were to be remitted to India's capital city, whereas we, on the contrary, find that those which were of the Zeeland mint, through this slight difference, could not be disposed of, and one was forced to send back the same to the amount of 6240 florins, in place of which one received rijksdaalders which, according to the books here, have been transferred to Batavia as 6240 florins in Zeeland duiten in specie, for which Your Honors, in accordance with the ministers' request, have entered 1000 rijksdaalders in duiten of the West Frisian mint, regarding which we shall consequently expect some elucidation. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th February anno 1765: we now proceed to continue the beginning of this year's report of our activities; and as we, in our previous letters of the 15th September and 27th December regarding the dispatch of the ships and vessels for 176 2/5, have already rendered account to your High Mightinesses concerning the returned bark the Mossel and the small vessel the Jonge Petrus Albertus, there remains for us in this regard only to do likewise with respect to the ship Westvriesland. Regarding which we took the liberty in our last letter to inform your High Mightinesses beforehand that the inspecting and measuring of the piece goods brought by it significantly detained us; and this is also the actual reason that the said vessel could not be dispatched earlier than now. The expenses incurred by this ship here are of little significance, consisting mainly of one month's rations supplied to it at the request of the skipper, as the expense account accompanying this under number 3 serves to show; wherefore we trust that your High Mightinesses will be pleased favorably to approve the same. And as regards the cargo brought by it, the same was delivered in externally good condition, and nothing was found to be over or short thereon, as may be seen from the findings on that cargo under number 4, to which we respectfully refer. 53: From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th February 1765: can be seen, to which we respectfully refer. Among the native affairs dealt with in our last letter of the 27th December, we had the honor to inform your High Mightinesses, among other things, of the provisional appointment of Sultan Iskandar as Emperor of Indrapura; and since we have subsequently received word that he was not only recognized and accepted in that capacity, but also solemnly presented there on the 22nd December, we judged it our duty to give your High Mightinesses the necessary notice thereof. The Raja of Tarusan, of whom we made mention in the aforementioned letter, finally appeared before us on the 4th January with the chiefs of the Tigablas Kotas, and the latter handed over to us several complaints against him in writing, requesting that we provide them with adequate satisfaction through the dismissal of the said Raja and compensation for the damage he had done to their countrymen. And as this petty king denied all their accusations, while they nevertheless steadfastly persisted in their statements and strongly insisted on the demand they had made, we deemed it necessary to satisfy them somewhat for the present, as is comprehensively dealt with in our resolution of the 4th January. We have accordingly detained the said Raja here in civil custody, and pro interim entrusted the government of the district and the village of Tarusan to 8 penghulus, of whose loyalty we are assured; while, further, in order to secure the Honorable Company from loss, we sent thither our bandahara with 2 penghulus, to the end of seizing the goods of the said Raja for his debt to the office of Pulau Cingkuk amounting to 196 thails of capital gold. And as it appeared to us from the report received from those commissioners that the goods they had found were not sufficient for that sum, we thereupon decided, under date of the 29th January, still to detain the said Raja here, and not to settle his dispute with the Tigablas Kotas before the Honorable Company should be fully satisfied by him, which we think will occur shortly, when we shall do our best to clear this matter out of the way in the least troublesome manner and with the necessary circumspection. To the envoys of Suruaso, of whom mention was made in our previous letter, we gave their farewell audience on the 25th January, and enclosed with the letter to their ruler a small gift amounting at purchase price to ƒ 372: 6:—, which we request your High Mightinesses will be pleased favorably to approve, for such reasons as we had the honor to inform your High Mightinesses in our aforementioned letter. Furthermore, the panglima, together with the other Padang regents, delivered to us a gift of 15 thails of capital gold, along with a letter, requesting that the same and the said gold be offered to your High Mightinesses in their name, which we hereby have the honor to fulfill, and the said letter is now transmitted to your High Mightinesses under number 5. Regarding the trade of this current financial year, we take the liberty to inform your High Mightinesses that the poor condition of some sorts of piece goods brought from the cargo by the Westvriesland—to be seen more fully in the report accompanying this under number 6—moved us to have a price current drawn up for the entire parcel, good and bad taken together, in such manner as it was best possible to dispose of them. We take the liberty to present to Your High Mightinesses under No. 8 his requisition for the book year 1765/6, in the manner as it was sent over by the resident; regarding which we deem ourselves obliged to inform Your High Mightinesses that, according to our thoughts, the same has been framed somewhat too broadly, and that a number of packs equal to that which was recently brought for that office by the sloop De Goudvink will be sufficiently abundant properly to supply the district of Ayerbangies bordering on Natter and Passaman; because whatever is sold in excess there causes an equal reduction in sales over here. From Adjarhadja the sloop De Hazewind has recently returned, which has brought from there the 38 packs of linens mentioned in our previous letter, together with 15975 57 From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765 lb. of pepper that the small ship De Jonge Petrus Albertus was unable to take in, we having ordered the said linens stored in the Honorable Company's warehouses, in order that they be preserved therein for the account of the resident if the same cannot be disposed of, and the pepper is now crossing over to the Castle with the bearer of this letter. The bad condition of the buildings and the poor trade that was conducted in the past year at the said office are the reason that we can say nothing positive regarding the resident's requisition sent over for the book year 1765/6, the more so because we do not know how it will please Your High Mightinesses to dispose regarding it; and we therefore take the liberty to present the same to Your High Mightinesses under No. 9 just as we received it from there. The linens and other goods brought for the office by Chinco were externally well delivered there, but the Guineas, both bleached, were found to be so bad that the same cannot be disposed of at an advance higher than 15 to 16 percent, and since we find this difference, compared to the ordinary percentage, all too large to be able to authorize the officials to make such a sale, we judged it best to grant their request to send the same back again and to requisition others in their stead, to which end we let the bearer of this letter call there to take in the said linens, consisting of 22 packs, and sail them over to the Castle; but as regards the remaining linens that were received there, we have on the contrary permitted them to proceed with the sale, according to the tenor of a price current sent over by them, from which we have seen that the sale turns out quite reasonably. The poor condition of the buildings and the meager trade carried out at the said office in the preceding year are the reasons that we cannot say anything positive regarding the resident's submitted requisition for the book year 1765/6, the more so because we do not know how it will please Your High Nobilities to dispose thereof; and we therefore take the liberty to present the same to Your High Nobilities under No. 9, just as we received it from there. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February in the year 1765: heathens, incorporated into the Christian church; and through his very instructive and comforting sermons, has so edified us all and given so much satisfaction, that we have reason to be exceedingly pleased therewith; thus we find ourselves obliged to express our most humble thanks once more to Your Right Honourables for the sending of His Reverence, who now, under God's guidance and conform to Your Right Honourables' very respected order, undertakes his return voyage to Costi with the bearer of this. Regarding the foreign nations, nothing else has occurred in that respect since our last reports, other than that some English ships have passed this roadstead, whereof, according to custom, we have the honour to present an accurate list to Your Right Honourables herewith under No. 12, whilst we furthermore, at his request, have permitted the recently arrived Chinese Limhoeko to return with this vessel, provided he pays the customary transport and board at Batavia. And since we have now come herewith to the section concerning the servants, we initially take the liberty to report to Your Right Honourables that the Assayer Fredrik Altena has made known to us that the Pay Bookkeeper Willem Frederik Mersz currently finds himself fully capable of executing the duties of Assayer here on the Coast, with the request that we might represent to Your Right Honourables his advancing old age and poor From Sumatra's West Coast, the 27th of February 1765 poor eyesight, to the end that it might please Your Right Honourables to favour him elsewhere with something else when opportunity arises. The Chief Mate of the ship Westvriesland, Jan Willem Muller, having passed away a few days ago, we have, subject to Your Right Honourables' approval, filled his post again with the Second Mate Job Dussington, who had been assigned here, whom we respectfully nominate to Your Right Honourables in order to obtain his confirmation in that service from Your Right Honourables. To the provisional Assistant George Snijder, serving at Adjarhadja, we have granted permission to address himself to Your Right Honourables via the annexed petition No. 13 in order to obtain from the same the customary salary and wages of a junior Assistant. Furthermore, upon request made, we have released from here, on account of the ample expiration of their terms, the Assistant Jan Jurgen Swanevelder, 2 sergeants, 1 corporal, and 1 trumpeter, who are crossing over with this vessel, as evidenced by a roll of names accompanying this under No. 14.
