377 The 26th of July 1764. The pay bookkeeper, his request. Because auction moneys may no longer be left in the hands of private individuals, but must be kept in the Company's Treasury for security. Hereupon was resumed a report from the pay bookkeeper Van Harn in the capacity of auctioneer, wherein he states that, having already for 3 to 4 months caused the Moorish prominent Regent Safdar Khan to be called upon daily for what he successively owed of those moneys, but without result, until he finally, with the assistance of the Director, had brought it so far that he acknowledged a debt amounting to ro/a 1240:-, of which a translation was annexed to the report, and upon which he requests that the said Regent may be given an account in the books and be debited for that amount in favor of him, Van Harn, being 378 The 26th of July 1764. the report and the translation of the bond being of the following content. To the Right Honorable Worshipful Mister Christiaan Lodewijk Senff, Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate, together with the Council. Right Honorable Worshipful Mister and Honored Councilors! After having for 3 to 4 months daily caused the Moorish Regent Safdar Khan to be admonished for what was due on the auctions, such has nevertheless been in vain, until I made my complaint concerning this to the Commander, with whose help I have obtained from him an acknowledgment of debt amounting to ro/a 1240, as appears from the adjoining translation to which I take the liberty to refer, with the request that the same may be given an entry in the trade books, his account debited for that amount, and on the other hand that of the undersigned credited. I have the honor to be with all high esteem, below stood, Right Honorable Worshipful Mister and Honored Councilors, lower, Your Right Honorable Worships' humble servant, signed, R. v. Harn. Translation of a Persian acknowledgment of debt granted by the Moorish Regent Safdar Khan. Be it known that in payment of twelve hundred Rupees, of which the half is 600, on account of twenty months house rent 379 The 26th of July 1764. To grant. house rent of the Dutch Lodge, calculated from the first of the Moorish month Jumada al-awwal in the Muslim year 1177 to the last of the month Shawwal 1178, I have received at auction for bid-in doria stripes and other goods an equal amount in the following manner, namely: For goods bid in at auction an amount of Ro/a 1237¾ Received in cash 2¼ Makes together Rf. 1240.— For which is due to me: Nine months of house rent calculated from the first of the Moorish month Jumada al-awwal anno 1177 to the last of Muharram 1178 at 62 rupees per month is Ro/a 558.— Item for 11 months following, calculated from the 1st of Safar to the last of Shawwal 1178, comes to 682.— Amounting to an equal sum of 1240. Below stood, the 7th of the month Muharram 1178, being confirmed with a seal stamped in black ink wherein was written in Persian letters Safdar Khan. Below stood, for the translation according to the statement of the Company's Persian writer Harde Taay, was signed, N. S. Holmberg, First Sworn Clerk. The Council disposing hereupon found no difficulty in granting the request as it stands, for which reason this was resolved, because one must show regard for the debtor in view of his power and can take no other 380 The 26th of July 1764. for the reasons stated alongside. Corporal Courier promoted to sergeant. other course with him, but especially because he is the owner or at least the rent receiver of the Company's Lodge, and one can withhold those moneys until settlement, as has already successively occurred with ro/a 558 by order of the Commander, which it is understood shall be counted into the Treasury by the purveyor, and that sum credited again to the said Safdar Khan. The successive stable masters always having had the rank of sergeant in that service, and the present Corporal Lucas Courier having now for several months performed that service to satisfaction, the same was at his request and upon the proposal of the Commander promoted to Sergeant with the pay of f 20— per month under a new contract of 5 years. Finally it was resolved to change the customary 381 The 26th of July 1764. The rupee henceforth to be reduced by 60ths instead of 64 parts. The adjacent sailors deserted to the English. customary reduction which one has used until now of the rupee by dividing through fractions of 64 and 32, and henceforth to divide the Rupee by the number of 60, as being more in accordance with guilders and the current money, and because the reduction to such or such a number is merely an imaginary calculation, this new method to take effect on the first of September next. Note was also made that on the 14th instant, 2 sailors named Evert Michielse and Jan Savaber had deserted. Thursday Before noon The 9th of August Anno 1764 All Present Act of approbation of the sentence of Clinkaert. First, the Lord Ruler had it noted that His Honor had on the 30th of the past month, by a separate act, approved the sentence passed by the Council of Justice of this factory against the fugitive equipment supervisor Matthys Clinkaert dated the 25th preceding, under such remarks nevertheless as may be seen in the following insertion of that paper itself. The undersigned Director Christiaan Lodewyk Senff having on the 25th of the current month received, and attentively read and resumed, all the documents belonging to the trial, initiated and concluded by the Merchant and Fiscal Mr. Gerbrand de Jonge, in the name of the Sovereign plaintiff, against Matthys Clinkaert, former equipment supervisor here, with the sentence passed thereon by the Honorable Council of Justice of this Directorate, believes he may make the following remarks on the one and the other, namely: First, that he can conceive of no reasons why the first request of the Fiscal by petition of the 20th of June for the inventory and sequestration of the goods and effects of the said Clinkaert in so far as they are to be obtained, was denied; since the resolution of Their High Nobles The Lords of the High Indian Government of the 20th of August 1753 expressly dictates that the conscription of the goods shall take place if the Company has any claim against the deserter, and the first members of the Council of Justice not only knew very well that the said Clinkaert would certainly have to be held to a heavy accounting on account of his administration, but this Clinkaert himself, even on the day of his desertion, fully testified to the commissioners who were sent by order of the undersigned to seal his goods: that he had taken that step solely out of fear of restitution; consequently a sufficient foreknowledge that the Honorable Company had some claim on him, and a clear testimony of the delinquent himself that he acknowledged himself liable to the legality of that claim. And therefore the request of the Fiscal should have been granted at once, and if not a formal, at least a provisional attachment should have been placed on all goods and monies that the delinquent might have left behind in his flight; in order not to give him, through an unnecessary delay, time and opportunity to take all of that with him after all, and thus withdraw it from the power and jurisdiction of the Dutch Company. Secondly: That it appears very improper to the undersigned Director that, notwithstanding the aforementioned request was denied, it was nevertheless explicitly resolved by the sentence that such action as may be due to the Honorable Company regarding what might belong to it on account of the defendant's former administration, should be recovered from all such goods and effects as shall be obtained from the defendant, without as yet any order having been given for the seizing and sequestering of the abandoned goods and monies, or anyone being qualified and ordered to accomplish that; for when this is compared against the preceding, it seems to imply a notorious contradiction, besides that the Honorable Company can also derive little benefit from the reservation of such an action, if time and opportunity are not taken into account to get and keep the means in its power from which it could recover its damage. And Thirdly: That among the trial papers are found some letters of the said Clinkaert, which largely tend to the encumbrance and accusation of the undersigned Director, without any mention being made thereof among the documents, except in so far as the Fiscal says of them in his intendit that they contain nothing for the defense of the fugitive, whereas the importance of the matter would seem to require that either the undersigned Director had been notified of their contents by a minute, so that he, deeming it necessary, could have answered to them; or that the same had been handed over in original to the Fiscal, with instructions to have the accuser verify his statement, or otherwise to act in that regard as he shall deem proper according to his office and duty. Yet since through the consequences of the contrary of these remarks in this case the interest of the Honorable Company, as little as the equity of Justice, stands to suffer any prejudice, because the abandoned goods and monies have already been secured by a political Council resolution, and the undersigned Director intends to address himself likewise to the Political Assembly regarding the accusations laid to his charge; he therefore approves the sentence passed against the person of the said

En Ten derden: Dat 'er onder de Proces Papieren eenige brieven van gedagten Clinc= koert gevonden worden, die prootelyx tot beswaar¬ nis en beschuldiging van den ondergetekenden Directeur strekken, zonder dat daarvan by de stukken, zonder dat daar van by de stukken eenige mentie werd gemaakt, als in zo verre de Fiscaal bij zin Intendit daar van zegt, dat ze tot defensie van den geafugeerden niets bevatten, daar nogthans de aangelegentheid der zaake schynd te vereisschen, dat, of van der zelver Inhoud den ondergetekenden Directeur, bi notul kennis was gegeeven, op dat hij zig des noodig oordeelende, daar op hadde kun- nen verantwoorden; of dat dezelve in origi¬ neel den Fiscaal ter hand gestelt waren, met last, om den beschuldiger zyn gezegde te doen vertfieeren, dan wel daar omtrent anders te handelen, zodanig, als hy volgens ampt en pligt vermeenen zal te behooren. Dog nademaal door de gevolgen van het Con= trarie deezer aanmerkingen in dit geval het belang der Ed maatschappye, zo min als de Geregtigheid der Iustitie eenig nadeel staat te lyden, door dien de agtergelatene goederen en gelden bereeds door een politicq Raads besluit in verzeekering gebragt zyn, en de ondergeteekende Diecteur van voornee¬ men is zig wegens de hem ten lasten gelegde beschuldigingen, insgelyks aan de vergadering van Politie te addresseeren; zoo approbeert zy het geslagen vonnis tegens de Persoon van gedagte

The 9th of August 1764. aforementioned Clinkaert, just as it lay; and allows on that account that the same be pronounced and executed at the proper time and place. Was written below: Thus Done, Resumed and Approved in the Dutch trading post at Souratta, the 30th of July Anno 1764. Signed: C: L. Tansz. Among which Remarks there also appeared the observation contained therein that there had not been delivered to His Honour certain letters found among the trial documents and written by Clinkaert to the Council of Justice, which largely tend to the prejudice of His Honour's honour and good name; and His Honour, now following his intention, made known by that act, addressing the Council of Police on that account, His Honour showed his indignation at those slanders, and that, however easy they were to refute, His Honour considered such far beneath him, and also could not engage in person without prejudice to the Character with which he has the honour to be clothed, to litigate against a Deserter and a person standing under a defamatory judicial sentence, but that His Honour, not being able to pass over those slanders in silence either, The 9th of August 1764. proposed to put the matter into the hands of the Honourable Fiscal de Jonge, and to qualify the same to act for His Honour and to defend and protect his insulted honour, leaving entirely to him, the Fiscal, the manner and way in which he shall decide to act in this matter. The Council agreeing to this, it was further resolved, for the aforementioned purpose, to requisition the aforementioned three Letters from the Council of Justice and to deliver them to the Fiscal in originali. Mr. Boucard, according to the Resolution of the 25th of January of this year, having already declared in the meeting of the creditors of the Director, Mr. Drabbe, who has departed for Batavia, that he will not pay for the goods purchased at the auction of that Gentleman, both by him and his Broker, to an amount of ro/a 4595¾, because he had bid for the same solely The 9th of August 1764. to satisfy himself for a debt which he, according to a bond from the well-mentioned Mr. Drabbe, had outstanding with His Honour, amounting to ro/a 4446½; yet the pay bookkeeper van Harn, who in the capacity of Auction Master is to collect those funds, had urged that Gentleman and his broker for payment, but without success, for which reason the Director had found himself obliged to have Mr. Hodges spoken to about this, because Boucard falls under the protection of the English Company; the Director having noted hereby what occurred on that occasion, which consists of the following: that His Honour had first caused Mr. Hodges to be asked whether Boucard stood under English protection, and how; secondly, whether according to English laws and customs it was permitted to be one's own Judge? Which first questions having been answered with Yes, and that Boucard enjoyed the very same prerogatives as a native-born Englishman, Continuation The 9th of August 1764. or as Mr. Hodges expressed himself, as one of the English Council members; and to the second, No having been said, the commissioners expressly dispatched for that purpose had complained about the improper and arbitrary conduct of Monsieur Boucard; pointing out that that Gentleman had thought fit to pay himself from an auction held by the Company on account of Mr. Drabbe's debt to the same and a resulting seizure of goods, in which cases the Company has preference above all creditors, as such a debt always arises from entrusted goods or monies; that this was also announced at the sale to Mr. Boucard as well as to all Creditors of Mr. Drabbe, and the pretext of ignorance was thereby taken from him, and that all creditors, at their meeting, had raised nothing against it, but The 9th of August 1764. that Monsieur Boucard alone [illegible] and sought his private right on goods that had been sold in good faith, and which thereby suffered no small infringement. 390 Continuation 9 August 1764. regarding what had been bid by Boucard himself in his own name, he could not declare himself without first having spoken to that gentleman and heard what reasons he brought against the payment; but that with respect to the preference of the Company, it was entirely different in its service, because when someone is insolvent and sells his effects during his lifetime, first all legal bonds are paid therefrom by age to a single day, and if anything is left over then, the Company, along with other creditors who only had book debts to claim, could only come into concurrence, even though it had ever so many and ever so legal claims, and that not only the Company, but even the King of Great Britain, as sovereign, had to take a back seat in such cases. Mr. Hodges added to this that he would speak to Boucard about it and do his best to persuade him with kindness to 395 9 August 1764. Further continuation to the payment, that this was all he could do in the matter, but that if he was unwilling, there was no other recourse than to prosecute him before the Mayor's Court in Bombay, though little success was to be expected from that in view of the English Law just mentioned. The Lord Director further had it noted that, pursuant to the promise of Mr. Hodges, he had thought that the broker of Boucard would have to pay for the goods bought by him to an amount of ro/a 2707½, while concerning the remaining ro/a 1884¼ that stand in the name of Boucard himself, patience would still have to be exercised, but that far from it, that Banyan had repeatedly given the answer to the vendue master that he would not pay because his master Monsieur Boucard had strictly forbidden him to do so; wherefore, when Mr. Hodges was reminded again after some time had elapsed, His Honour had answered 394 9 August 1764. why Mr. Drabbe had apparently sat by, and only to keep up his respectability a little, Mr. Hodges said that they could have forbidden Boucard to buy without cash payment, but it was shown to His Honour that this would be the greatest affront among us that could be done to a man of credit and good name like Boucard, and who is moreover a stranger, the more so as he had not declared at that time that he would satisfy himself out of what he bought. Since it appears from this that Boucard is seeking to excuse himself from the payment with all kinds of frivolous pretexts, which payment he well knew had to be made after the vendue, because both the Lord Director and the vendue master had warned him on the first day of the vendue, when they saw that he bought so much, that everything would have to be paid in cash, because the vendue took place for the account of the Company; the Lord Director had 395 9 August 1764. The vendue master thus being unable to collect the money, gives notice thereof. informed Mr. Hodges that if His Honour could approve, it would be best for the two Gentlemen Heads to confer about it in the presence of Boucard, and that His Honour left the choice of location to him, namely whether the Lord Director should come to Mr. Hodges or Mr. Hodges to His Honour, which proposal was also accepted by that gentleman, and that to this end, when the roads were good, he would come to His Honour, as he owed a visit, and bring Monsieur Boucard along. The meeting, disposing upon this matter, approved that Mr. Boucard be debited in the Trade Books in favor of the said Van Harn for the mentioned sum, until such time as Mr. Hodges shall have fulfilled his promise. The Chief Administrator Bosman being now ready with the formal accounts of the former Cashier Oudenhoorn, the Lord Director Drabbe who has departed for Batavia, and the Honorable outgoing Second Kelly, the Lord Director had actually arranged this meeting in order to dispose finally over the same, and to proceed therein in due order. Very first, the matter of the former Cashier was dealt with, whose arrears amount to ro/a 15943 1/64, for the satisfaction of which Oudenhoorn being unable, the members of this Meeting, Blaaukamer, the provisional Secretary of this meeting, and the Chief Administrator Ruperti, were 398 The 9th of August 1764. The undersigned members of this meeting, the Junior Merchant and provisional Secretary of Police Willem Blaaukamer, and the fellow Junior Merchant and ad interim Cashier Otto Hendrik Ruperti, in the capacity of guarantors for the former Cashier Jan Oudenhoorn, who has departed for Batavia, having most respectfully demonstrated at the session of the 10th of December of the past year the circumstances which, according to their humble opinion, could and should dispense them from the payment of the sum of Ten Thousand Rupees for which they interposed themselves; and 399 The 9th of August 1764. which were principally founded upon this well-grounded reason: that they had indeed bound themselves for the said sum, yet in the reasonable expectation that, according to custom, no more than that amount would be advanced to him, the Cashier, at one time; in which case they would also have made no exceptions, because there could be no danger for them at all, unforeseen misfortunes aside, if those whose duty it is to see to it had properly taken care that no advance had been made without first having examined what the previous funds had been used for, as is proper in a well-directed household; that meanwhile such exorbitant and unmeasured sums, at times indeed 20,000 to 30,000 in a month, were advanced, which, if not the cause of, at least contributed much to the desolate condition of the petty cash; that they, the undersigned, never knew of this, nor could have known, and consequently could not save themselves from a danger they could not foresee; that meanwhile the supervision over the cash is entrusted solely to the Lord Director and the Second; and that the signatories therefore believed that these circumstances could and should liberate them from the payment; and this representation having been not only not rejected by Your Right Honorable and the disinterested members, but deemed reasonable, and their circumstance strong enough, and it being judged thereupon that the signatories would indeed be liberated from the satisfaction when the matter should be respectfully presented to Their High Mightinesses, but that Your Right Honorables dared not take upon yourselves 400 The 9th of August 1764. to dispense them from the payment; they would gladly have acquiesced therein without any further movement, but considering the matter of too much weight not to use as many precautions as are at all possible, because the least consequence to be expected for them from the payment of such an innocent debt is their total ruin, not counting such a painful burden, exceeding his means, as lies on the neck of the first-signed; so they consider themselves (with this express remark: that in the said resolution of the 10th of December they also named the Honorable Second Kelly, thinking that the supervision over the petty cash also concerned him, whereas they were subsequently informed that it devolved upon the Director alone, and the Cashier depended directly on him), for these pregnant and above-mentioned reasons, unavoidably obliged, for their own preservation so dearly recommended to them by natural law, to protest hereby against the Noble Honorable Outgoing Director Jan Drabbe in the most solemn and powerful manner, yet saving due respect, leaving to His Honor's account everything that now or in the future could or might result to the charge of the signatories from this suretyship; since His Right Honorable is not only the one who ought to have seen against the bad administration of the cash, but should also have warned the guarantors of the danger that was unavoidably approaching them from the bad condition into which their principal must notoriously fall through such a badly directed management of his affairs, if they had been able

401 The 9th of August 1764. thought fit to have her financial state inspected by commissioners, to watch over matters, and to act as the circumstances of the times and affairs would have required, but which, having been neglected, is tantamount to having tacitly permitted the ruin of the two signatories, and, in the opinion of the undersigned, makes the aforementioned Honorable outgoing Director solely liable for the payment of that suretyship, which opinion they nevertheless respectfully submit to the penetrating and equitable judgment of Your Honorable Worships, whose disposition on this both humble and necessary protest they shall await with all submission. The said two persons again standing outside, the Director submitted for the consideration of the meeting the equity contained in the tenor of that writing, of which one had already in the session of the 14th of December of last year been so far convinced that one would certainly already have proceeded to take a resolution to discharge the sureties of Oudenhoorn if they had come forward with such a protest. Resolution to place the arrears of Oudenhoorn to the account of Mr. Drabbe, and to release the guarantors for the present, but in the meantime to have Ruperti provide security for r ƒa 5000. with the treasury ought and should have prevented, or at least have been able to warn the guarantors to guard themselves against damage. The Lord Director fully conforming with this opinion, it was unanimously resolved positively to place the above-mentioned arrears of Oudenhoorn amounting to Ro/a 35943 1/64 to the account of that Mr. Drabbe, and provisionally to declare the guarantors released. Yet because the resolution is only taken as far as this meeting is concerned, and one cannot know how Their High Noble Excellencies may feel about this matter, it was agreed on the proposal of the Lord Commander to have the acting Cashier Ruperti provide security that, as long as one is unaware of the disposition of the High Government, he will in no way reduce or alienate the goods that the commissioners have found in his possession, and which are appraised at more or less roa 5000, 10 August 1764. and to let Blaankamer count ƒ 1500 into the treasury. Which both accept. and regarding the inventoried remaining goods of the acting Secretary Blaaukamer, which are estimated with the cash at r ƒ 1500, being considered things belonging to his person, to order him to count that sum into the treasury at the earliest opportunity in reduction of his own debit, whereupon he may retain everything for his necessities. Having addressed the agreed-upon reasons, it has appeared that under primo the balance of his cash book stands at Ro/a 32:84-, and that the Honorable Ruperti has declared that he had not kept any book or notes for six years, as His Honor showed us, but presented to us three original pay accounts for the years 1760/61, 1761/62, and 1762/63, by which he is owed ƒ1446. — Herewith we hope to have fulfilled the aforementioned cited resolution according to the intention of Your Right Honorable, and we have the honor to be with all respect. /was signed:/ Right Honorable Sir and esteemed Councilors /lower:/ Your Right Honorable's very obedient and humble servants /was signed/ D. Herewith, the account of the former Cashier Oudenhoorn being formally concluded, that of the former Director Mr. Drabbe was taken in hand; and whereas, according to the same, His Honor is in arrears for a sum of ro/a 8036 1/16, caused by the fact that the shortage just found in the cash under Oudenhoorn was charged to His Honor's account, the Director considered that he could not refrain from calling the Honorable outgoing Second Kelly to account over this, for the following reasons. The Honorable Kelly addressed about this for reasons. 412. The 10th of August 1764 First, that His Honor, as also Chief Cashier and Trade Bookkeeper, could have known that matters were not going properly with the petty cash, and also why such large advances had been made. Secondly, that upon noticing this, he ought to have warned the Governor, and, if the latter did not heed private admonitions, ought to have addressed him in Council. Thirdly, because it was a well-known fact, which the Honorable Kelly himself will not deny, that all matters of importance passed through his hands, and finally, fourthly, because the Honorable Kelly had also played with the Company's funds, as appears from the statement of the former Cashier Oudenhoorn that he owed between 7 and 8000 Rupees to the cash, which certainly must also have given occasion to the Cashier... 413. The 10th of August 1764. who in this regard justified himself as follows. ...to the Cashier to have given cause for poor management of the petty cash, as he surely would have deemed himself justified in doing so, seeing the example of his Director and Second. The Director ceasing to speak, the Honorable Kelly first showed in general that a Second was not accountable for the petty cash, and stated that this appeared: 1. from the Surat Resolution of the 2nd of August 1740, when upon the auditing of the cash there was a shortage of ro/a 64,545½, upon which it was then resolved that, since here the Governor and Cashier have been responsible for the Company's monies, both should therefore also be held to make satisfaction; 2. because in the session of the 5th following, there is found recorded a declaration by the provisional Fiscal Willem... 414. Willem van der Laar, in which these words appear: "for the keeping of the cash box encumbers the respective Chiefs throughout the whole of India, who upon default are principally to be addressed for it, according to the order of the 22nd of September 1659 and the 10th of August 1713 expressed in Their High Mightinesses' respected letters; also, beyond restitution, such subjects, according to the well-known orders of the Company, merit the utmost correction"; upon which declaration, because the instituted action to recover the Company's monies was deemed well-founded, it was agreed to leave the matter to the said officer to be prosecuted by him before the Honorable Court of Justice. And which Court thereupon granted a formal confiscation of all such goods, both furniture and others, as had already been sealed under sequestration by the fugitive Director Phoonsen and the deceased... 415. 428. 10 August 1764. It was resolved to hold Clinkaert as principal guarantor for ro a 10000, and to demand all his outstanding moneys. To the providing of guarantee for 2/5 ro a 1381 12/32 they judged, and at the same time took into consideration, that Blaankamer of himself has nothing and that it is nevertheless absolutely necessary for the good of the Company that the moneys of the imposed compensations come into the Treasury, thus it was resolved by unanimous votes to hold the more mentioned Clinckaert as principal guarantor on behalf of Blaankamer for the sum of ro a 10000, on that account to debit his account in favor of that of Blaankamer for that amount, and now to have all his left behind and outstanding moneys, specified in the Resolution of 26 July last, demanded and paid into the Treasury. This decision having been announced to the secretary and he being addressed by the Lord Commander for the satisfaction of the remainder that his account is still in arrears for the sum of 25 ro a 1383 13/32, he showed 429. 10 August 1764. Pursuant to the resolutive dispositions of the 26th of July of the current year in the margin of the report of the collation of the Reports against the Trade books, among others, the Military Lieutenant Amesbeek having been ordered to make compensation for 11 pcs. defective flintlocks, which were found to be deficient in his administration, the Lord Director produced a Petition, submitted by the said Lieutenant, appended with an autograph note from the former Equipage overseer Klinckaert, of the following content. To the Honorable Right Venerable Lord Christiaan Lodewyk Senft, Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate, together with the Council. Honorable Right Venerable Lord and Esteemed Councillors. The Military Lieutenant here, Herman Amesbeek, your Right Venerable Honors' humble servant, having observed by an Extract of Resolutive dispositions upon a Report regarding found differences between the trade Books and the Reports belonging to the general Transport of this Directorate under the ultimo of November 1763: that your Right Venerable Honors have been pleased to impose upon him the compensation, among other goods, of 11 pcs. defective flintlocks 461 The 31st of August 1764. more other goods, of 11 pcs. defective flintlocks; therefore takes the liberty to represent most submissively to your Right Venerable Honors that the said difference was caused solely because the petitioner did not take a receipt regarding the shipment from the then Equipage overseer Clinckkaert, though it nevertheless appears from the note of the said Clinckaert annexed hereto that defective flintlocks were sent with the ship Sloterdyk to the Capital of the Indies; wherefore the petitioner humbly requests that your Right Venerable Honors please be pleased to release him from that compensation, and to let the amount of the said 11 pcs. defective flintlocks be charged to the Capital Batavia at the bottom Which doing etcetera in the margin Surat ultimo August 1764:—— Sir Amesbeek I have received your Honor's note in which is seen that your Honor, for want of being able to prove that the 11 flintlocks were shipped off, is to compensate for them in cash; as far as the receipt is concerned I do not have it anymore, but if I am credible, then I will take an oath upon it that the said flintlocks were shipped in a chest with other goods with the howry de Uytwinner, just as I have told your Honor many times before, and likewise that to the best of my recollection and what seems to stand before me, flintlocks of your Honor were also shipped with the Slotendijk, the first-mentioned consignment having been sent with the Blyeswyk to Batavia, Herewith I have the honor to be with the utmost respect. at the bottom Sir, Your Very obedient servant signed M.s Clinkaert.
