Also, upon our authorization, the annual contingent was delivered by the Cassimbazar servants to the Dewan of the Panchotra, and at Patna, upon the continuous admonitions of Mr. Dirimarijn, successively r. 22500.-.- on the peshkash, and furthermore, according to the Cassimbazar letter of 10 September, on the occasion of a visit of the Panchotra Daroga and his Naib to the Chief Bacheracht, some gifts had to be presented, amounting to f 672. 12. 8 prime cost and f 766. 17. 12 sale value, being f 27. 13.- prime cost and f 29. 16. 12 sale value less than what was presented on a similar occasion in the year 1756, while the Lords Nawabs and Rajah Durlabhram, according to the letter of 20 September, had to be complimented on account of the honorary titles and mansabs obtained from the King, with the presentation of some nazars amounting together to f 352. 16.-, or f 15. 15.- less than at their appointment. According to the custom of the country, as appears from the Cassimbazar letter of 11 February, the Lords Nawabs once again had to be congratulated on obtaining robes of honor from His Mogul Majesty, and the expenses on that occasion amounted to f 250. 8. 5, or f 23. 12. 8 less than previously, and since such levies are unavoidable, we have seen fit to approve them. In addition to what was already mentioned in our previous letter regarding the findings submitted on 15 February by the Head Administrator Isinck concerning 594 small packages of nutmegs and three barrels of mace, it was resolved to approve the writing off of 1312 1/4 lb of mite-eaten nutmegs, dust, and refuse, calculated at 18 2/2 percent shortage, and 1 1/4 lb lost by evaporation, as well as 26 1/4 lb underweight and 163 1/4 lb of dust and white leaves on the mace, making 150 1/2 lb or 39 3/64 percent, provided that the mite-eaten nutmegs, etc., were sent in sealed jars to the capital, and the commissioners Koning and Herklots confirmed their report under oath; which latter, according to the judicial minutes to be found with our resolution of the 20th of this month, was duly carried out. Except for some gunny sacks that were damaged at Joppra. Examination of the trade books of A: 1764/5, of items charged here, known debtors in the books, settlement of some short-falling papers, statements of the expenses on merchandise, offices on its time, the preliminary and remaining balances confronted according to order. the spices and corals, the findings of which can be found in the Resolution of the 18th of February, some minor shortages were indeed observed, slightly more than permitted by the Regulation, but since this was very slight, we permitted the writing off thereof, all the more so because the report on the spices was confirmed by oath. The Patna servants have also, by letter of the last day of December, requested to write off 250 gunny sacks at Joppra and 136 at Singia that were found unsuitable among the remaining goods, but before permitting this, we wished to be informed about what caused this, so that if the negligence of one or another had taken place in this matter, we might hold the Company harmless. The prolonged illness of the Trade Bookkeeper Christoffel Maurits Dorre was the cause that the trade books could not be closed at the proper time, and upon his death, the First Undersigned charged the Junior Merchant Ross to settle the arrears of that work. Because of this, it was only on the 18th of February that one could proceed to give the commission for the examination thereof to the Junior Merchants Humbert and Nagedaam, who consequently submitted a report on the 15th of this month on the incoming spices, to which, and to our decisions written in the margin of the same, we refer in hopes of good interpretation; furthermore, by our decision of the 15th of this month, a report of the aforementioned Ross was inserted regarding some errors made in the books, which, pursuant to the proposal made therewith, we resolved to have rectified through transfer entries. The remaining balances of the currently closing trade books were further confronted by the two First Clerks of this office against the remaining balances of the previous book year, and by the Head Administrator and the Trade Transfer Clerk, the outgoing copies were collated against the originals and signed for approval. The trade booklets of Cossimbazar and Patna were also ready at the appointed time, and the reports and dispositions upon the same can be found in our resolution of the 26th of November of the past year. Among the enclosures are also transmitted the separate statements of the expenses on merchandise at Hooghly, Cossimbazar, and Patna, as well as the copies of the registers of the papers sent to the meeting of the Gentlemen Seventeen; and we may furthermore note here that in the session of the 26th of June, a disposition was made upon the report of the Head Administrator concerning some invoices of account, and on the 15th of this month upon that of the Trade Bookkeeper regarding the debtors running in the books, requesting to refer to the decisions taken thereon, only noting regarding the latter that, pursuant to the statute adopted in the Council of the Indies on the 9th of July 1762, having judged the Merchant Rietveld, as former First Warehouse Master, liable for what the late former Second Warehouse Master De Wijs remained indebted to the Company at his death, regarding the spices found short during the inventory taking of the last day of February of the past year, for which each of them was charged half of the compensation by the Resolution of the 17th of September of the past year, and having therefore resolved to have the entire amount satisfied by the aforementioned Rietveld.

General Charges and Profits of Anno 1764/5. brought to credit. As Bellazoor. . . . . satisfy, reserving his recourse against the insolvent estate of De Wijs, in competition with the other creditors, by his request in that regard on the 18th of this month, requested by petition to be relieved of that indemnification, on the grounds that the spices on which the deficits were found had lain untouched in the warehouses for 2, 3 to 4 years, and had thereby been subject to considerable drying out, which could not be imputed to the administrators; while he, moreover, had received the same unopened, and on the contrary, upon the handover of the administration to the Junior Merchant Doeve, everything was opened and reweighed, which likewise could not have occurred without spillage. We cannot therefore fail to present this request to Your High Honors; but have meanwhile ordered the aforementioned Rietveld to deposit the entire amount into court until Your High Honors' further orders, or to provide sufficient security for it. In the financial year 1764/5, the general charges of this Directorate amounted to ƒ 502035: 2. being ƒ 5864— — more than in the previous financial year. The general profits, after deducting the amount by which the profit account at Cassembazaar fell behind, mounted to ƒ 210825„ 16„ — or less than those of 1763/4 ƒ 27339„ 14. 207 Reason for the increase of the charges in Hoegli and for the decrease of the same at Kassembazaar; incorporation of the list of the general remainders, etc. Dhaka charges. At the main office, where the charges amounted to ƒ392557. 8., being ƒ40675. 15. 8. more than in the year 1763/4, that increase was primarily caused by the presents that had to be delivered to both the Nawabs and other grandees of the court, furthermore by the higher amount of the accounts of the hospital, expenses of ships, ships' pay, extraordinary repair, and condemnation and confiscation, while on the other hand all the other expense accounts were considerably less than the previous financial year, appearing in more detail in a comparison drawn up by the chief administrator and inserted, alongside the comparison against the provisions of the memorandum of household expenses, in our resolution of the 15th of this month. The charges at Kassembazaar were ƒ6759. 6. 5. less than the year before, due to the reduction in the expense accounts of ordinary and extraordinary expenses, pay on land, carpentry and repair, and presents, separately specified with the reasons thereof in a demonstration and comparison to be found in our resolution of the 26th of November of the past year, behind which is added the comparison against the provisions of the memorandum of household expenses, with which they also differ favorably by ƒ5182. 10.; on the other hand, the revenues were ƒ110. -. 5. less in the last year than in the year 1763/4, and thus ƒ6649. 6. - was saved on expenses in comparison with the previous year. Furthermore, here follows the list of the cash remainders as of the end of August, both here and at Cassembazaar and Patna, of the remainders of merchandise, and the general remainders under the same date, as well as the import of gold and silver specie, together with their sale, minting, etc. Patna charges and revenues. The Patna charges, excluding the extorted funds, having amounted to ƒ34057. 3. 8. and the profits only ƒ10655. 13., making a difference of ƒ23401. 10. 8., that office nevertheless came out ahead by an amount of ƒ9955. 19. in comparison with the previous financial year, the demonstration and comparison of which are likewise inserted in our resolution of the 26th of November; the decrease in profits must be regarded solely as a consequence of the bad times, while that of the charges was caused by the fact that, owing to the removal of the wartime troubles, no musketeers or vessels needed to be hired, and one remained, in addition, exempt from various extraordinary levies. According to the memorandum drawn up by the chief administrator, inserted in the resolution of the 15th of this month, the charges at Dhakka amount to ƒ3843. 5. 4., which has also been passed.
