624 25 April 25 April The transshipment of saltpetre at Tellinge runs too high. A parcel of saltpetre purchased here to somewhat prevent that. Proposition of his Honour. To give notice, and to request that they please establish the necessary orders concerning this; as during the administration of the Honourable Lord Councillor Extraordinary of the Indies Louis Taillefert, some complaints were received once more from Bellasoor about this, but upon the private letter of his Honour, to be found in the secret cash box alongside the private letters of the High Government, our agent was vindicated by the former Governor of Calcutta, Henrik van Sittart. The Lord Director further intimating that the saltpetre which is sent in the spring from Pattena, is burdened with so many expenses, through the transshipment at Tellinge as well as otherwise, that that which, purchased at Pattena from the English, is otherwise at a reasonable price, turns out very expensive here; and that it would therefore be desirable if one could purchase so much here that with what is still in stock, and what is to be sent off in the autumn, one could ballast the return ships and satisfy the Indian Demand, so as not to be forced to have the saltpetre, which is received from the English at the end of the season, sent down, but rather to have the same stored at Pattena until the month of August or September, when it can be brought down with less danger and expense; thus it was declared by all members together that they were of the same opinion as the Lord Director in this regard, and consequently resolved to endeavour to obtain some parcels of that salt. Whereupon, after his Honour had shown 625 25 April A deed of surety presented for the late Mr Kist. 25 April Goods. It having been seen from the letter of the servants at the side-mentioned factory dated the 25th of this month, that they had agreed with the merchants there regarding the contracting of silk fabrics for the Demand for Europe for this year with a price increase of 10 anas Courant on the large and half as much on the small pieces, it was resolved to approve that contracting, for the reason that it is well known that the high price of the silk must naturally cause the increased cost of the fabrics. It being further reported that they had contracted for the demanded quantities of Doesoetijs and Dongrijs for Europe at the prices of the previous year, it was resolved to approve this, as also that they had taken up ƒ 70875. -. - for the necessary advances and purchase of raw Pattenie and mochta and for the reeling wages, pursuant to our authorization by letter of the 16th of March last.
