292. 29 July 293 755 29th July. two Judicial Minutes concerning oaths taken Saturday Honorable had reported, that the crew of the sloop de Duijf, which according to what was recorded in the Resolution of the 11th instant capsized off Sirampoer; continually pressed him for compensation for the rations that were lost through that accident, and had been purchased with the board money of three to four months provided to them; so it was, after deliberation, approved and understood to have the quartermaster of the aforementioned sloop, upon the offering of an oath, draw up a memorandum of the cost of the aforementioned rations, in order that, having seen the same, such disposition may be taken thereon as shall be deemed proper. On this occasion, having also arrived and been read two Judicial Minutes, one concerning the taking of the oaths required at the aforementioned session of the 11th of this month from the ensign George Lodewijk Singelman and other witnesses, regarding the loss of some saltpeter from the consignment received from Pattena this spring, and the other for the swearing of the deposition, also required on the same day, of the sailors Pieter Marcus and companions for the loss of four half leagers etc. on the occasion of the running aground and capsizing of the aforementioned sloop De Duijff, it was resolved to insert the same as usual herein, and to hold the requirement of the assembly therewith as fulfilled: both reading as follows: ensign. 827 756 29 July 29 July all present, except the Members Ross and Tissot having been submitted the following having been read the following Extract from the minutes of the proceedings and resolutions in the Council of Policy at Hoegli on Friday the 11th of July Anno 1766. Furthermore, upon a report submitted by the Honorable Chief Administrator concerning the 4017 bags of saltpeter brought down from Pattena in the month of March last under escort of Sergeant Balthazar Berling, which according to the Pattena invoice should have contained 572422 1/2 lb net, yet were delivered here with only 3743 bags and 492831 1/4 lb, thus with a shortage of 79590 3/4 lb or 13 3/10 percent on average, it was resolved to recover the amount of 42 bags, which according to the declaration of the aforementioned sergeant and companions were lost through the willful negligence of the native Golaaf Raaij, who came down with him as daroga but is now detained in the kacheri, by having these compensated by him at the price that it costs the Company here including the charges, and to demand the provisional Town Master Otto Willem Falck to collect the same; but as for the rest, everything having been caused for the most part by accident, to pass it for write-off according to the specifications in the report, provided that the attestations granted concerning it are properly sworn. /underneath/ Agrees /signed/ Iacob Eilbracht, provisional secretary And the oaths required thereby having been taken by Ensign G. 290 29th July 297. 757 29th July to Pattena the finding of two sokkels of mace to Patna, And the required oath having been properly taken by the deponents, namely by Ian de Koning in the Protestant manner and the two others in the Roman Catholic manner, it was resolved to make a record thereof. Below stood: To my knowledge, signed: Pieter Hoff, provisional secretary. Lower stood: Extracted from the memorial of the Honorable Council of Justice of this factory. Collated, agrees. Hoegli, date as above. Was signed: P:r Hoff, provisional secretary. Points & Rescription. Proceeding further to the business concerning the contents of a letter from the servants at the factory mentioned in the margin, dated the 11th of this month, it was, after review of an attached finding and sworn report of the assistants Pieter van der Sluijs and Willem Ladet concerning the opening of two sokkels of mace, resolved to pass the shortage of 74 lb or fully 24 percent for write-off, and to insert the aforesaid finding alongside the report into these records. The undersigned, having been specially commissioned by the merchant and head, the Honorable Moize Lafont, to open and sort 2 sokkels of mace brought here by the ensign George Lodewijk Singelman on the 9th of January of this year, hereby declare that they have executed this and found the same to weigh and contain as shown below, namely: gross / net / dust and white leaves 1 sokkel numbered 2 at Houglij and inside No 149: being according to the note of the 20th of June Anno 1761 the P.laij trodden therein 170 lb coarse mace of the second sort, and according to the invoice from Houglij should have contained 154 lb Net; this weighed out to only: 164 1/2 / 120 1/2 / 10 3/4 Ditto numbered 1 at Houglij and inside No 159, being according to the note of the 15th of July Anno 1761 trodden therein at Bandawaijeren 170 lb coarse mace of the second sort, and according to the invoice from Hoegli should have contained 154 lb net; this weighed out to only [illegible] Finding of the underweight and the dust and white leaves on 2 sokkels of mace brought here on the 9th of January last, regarding which the esteemed disposition of the Honorable, Respected Lord Director and Council was requested for the information of the trade bookkeeper here, namely: 74 lb as well in short weight, dust, and white leaves on two sokkels which according to the record, according to custom, should have contained net: 308 lb, but in the same, as shown by the accompanying sworn statement, no more was found than: 254 1/4 lb, namely 234 lb pure good mace and 20 1/4 lb dust and white leaves, therefore 53 3/4 lb less, calculating this underweight at: 17 1/2 percent fully To this add dust and white leaves 20 1/4 lb making: 6 1/2 percent fully thus comes as before 74 lb which together makes: 24 percent fully Below stood: In the Netherlands Factory Patna, the 10th of July Anno 1766. That they, the suppliers, had also continually given His Honour good promises, yet now for some time had made their complaint about the excessive increase in the price of provisions and cotton wool, casually alleged by His Honour in the resolution of the 8th instant, on account of which they frankly declared that they saw no possibility of fulfilling their contracts unless one were willing to accommodate them somewhat in this regard and, according to the circumstances of the times, cast a favorable consideration upon their interests, in order that they might remain spared from ruin. That for this reason they daily troubled His Honour for a proportionate price increase on all the linens; but that His Honour, however much he was also convinced within himself of the truth of their complaints, had steadily turned them away and in the strongest terms held before their eyes how one was obliged in all matters to keep one's promise, and that they, having contracted with us at the prices of the previous year, could not with any reasonableness claim any increase.
