It being further reported by the servants that they, in their letter of the 12th of October of the past year, had communicated that the flat roofs of the warehouses at Singia had collapsed due to bad weather, and that one of the same urgently needed to be repaired for storing the gunny, and that, although no reply or authorization had followed thereupon, they the servants, since a storage place for the gunny bags could not be dispensed with there, had remedied this inconvenience in the most economical manner by having one of the said warehouses repaired, for which an amount was advanced of rs 423: —½, but against which, by the sale of the old timber of the collapsed warehouses, an amount was realized of rs 187: 4. —, so that said repair only amounted to Rops 235: 12½, as can be seen in a memorandum thereof sent separately and placed below: In this regard it is taken into consideration that although the aforementioned servants had requested permission for this, the authorization for the repair was nevertheless never given to them, and following which they should therefore have waited, or requested the necessary orders once again; considering that the collapsing of those buildings could not have occurred so suddenly without their having been able to give notice of the dilapidated condition somewhat earlier or before the collapse; and accordingly it was resolved to enjoin this upon them for the future; but the aforementioned expenses of rops 235: 12½, the remainder of more, being judged not excessive, to pass them for this time; under a warning that, according to orders, the amount of all expenses, if given in Rupees, must also be specified in Guilders. 791 12 August 12 August approving negotiation of two bonds request of Mhamed Rezachan for the Nawab's share in the Peshkash yet the restriction by letter of the last of March suspended for the present Furthermore is approved the negotiation conducted by the frequently mentioned servants of sr ro ps 6500 on two different bonds at the ordinary interest of ¾ percent per month, and the advance of fa r 6000. —. made thereupon against it to the linen weaver. Resumption of two resolutions found from there. from the well-mentioned Their Right Honorables dated 20 July 1762, that all merchandise at Patna must yield another 15 percent profit above the Hooghly determination, and that the quicksilver must thus be demanded yonder with a 65 percent advance, or otherwise may not be requisitioned. With the demand sent over this spring, dated 28 February 1766, only 18,000 lb of pepper and 300 lb of cinnamon were requested, and currently there is nothing of the former and only a little of the latter in stock; and a request having therefore been made by the servants that both those articles might be increased by an equal quantity and that 36,000 lb of pepper and 600 lb of cinnamon thus be sent to them, since they believed that there will be a likelihood to dispose of it; so it is resolved to give due consideration to this when deciding upon the aforementioned demand. After this, two transmitted resolutions, taken and adopted by the servants on the ultimate of July and the 12th of this month, were attentively read. After this, it was imparted by the said Honorable outgoing Chief to the Honorable Rietveld that a section of the south-east wall of the factory, which could not be completely finished before the rainy season and on which the plastering is still lacking, had collapsed, and that the same would completely fall over according to the prediction of an old mason who had been in the service of several chiefs, but was not employed for the building up of the said wall. The aforementioned master mason, having been called inside at the express request of the Honorable Lafont and asked what this mishap was due to, declared that the wall was too thin and the materials were not good; which declaration, translated into the Moorish language by the Assistant Pieter van der Huijs, he affirmed, upon special questioning by the Honorable Lafont, to be able to substantiate with an oath. The honorable chief having communicated to the members that his honor had again been several times very strongly dunned for the feeskes on behalf of the Nawab Marmod Rezachan, so that his honor saw no way, with propriety, to turn away these urgent demands any longer, all the more because his honor was repeatedly informed that at the main office and at Kassembazaar they had already proceeded to the usual annual payment there; he therefore proposed whether it did not seem better, while there was still time, to proceed to payment with good grace rather than later by coercion; whereupon this was discussed, and it was considered that with a longer delay, even if such might contrary to expectation be obtained, the payment of this annual contribution could not be avoided; since it ought to be made sooner or later in any case, and from long procrastination against the aforesaid Nawab's wishes nothing but his disfavor or displeasure could arise: all which having been considered, it was agreed, pursuant to the proposal of the honorable chief, to make a provisional advance of 1000 sicca rupees, and this subject to the approval of the Right Honorable Director and Council at Hoegli. Hereupon, the Honorable Chief asked the second whether he also had any objections against taking the aforesaid oath, so that they might then also be stated on this occasion; and the second answered that he could bring forward no objection in the world concerning this; for, contenting himself with the communication of the Honorable Chief, he proceeded in that regard very calmly and in good faith: that beforehand some thoughts of the aforesaid nature had indeed occurred to him, but that on the assurance of the Honorable Chief he had no reason further to admit any considerations or retain any doubt; and that, having always considered the oath as a sacred declaration, he would also never act recklessly therein: whereupon the third person further introduced that the contemplation of such an important matter as the solemn invocation of the Lord's Holy name had made him decide to demonstrate the unnecessariness of the aforesaid oath, because of the impossibility of obtaining the required requisites for the same; that solely for that reason he deemed it his duty to bring this with the required respect before the eyes of his Highly Honored Masters, in order to obtain the requested change, but that he also found himself bound at the same time, upon what was brought forward by the second, to testify that not the least doubt of the good faith with which this matter was handled for the Honorable Company had occurred to him, much less had given cause for his considerations; but that precisely the contrary had the more persuaded him to demonstrate the unnecessariness of the two oaths of which mention has been made; and that the existence of good faith constituted the most powerful pillar of his arguments concerning the unnecessariness of the same. With respect to the partially collapsed southeast wall of the lodge, mentioned in the Resolution of the last day of the past month, and for the inspection of which no commissioners have yet been able to be appointed due to the not yet completed transfer of the Company's effects, it was on this occasion submitted by the Third Person, as the one charged with the repairs: That whereas, upon the strong insistence of the former Chief, the Honourable Lafont, it had been recorded in the last resolution what His Honour had thought fit to have brought forward against him regarding the accident to the said wall by the mason who, as long as His Honour was Chief, served under him, but was barred by him, the Third Person, from the Company's work because of his conduct; notwithstanding that he, to prevent all damage, had offered to have this section of wall rebuilt without loss to the Honourable Company; he took the liberty to present the reasons from his side against that accusation that the materials were allegedly not good and the wall too thin, consisting in this: that his banyan, who had directed that work as the first head, must and also will indemnify the Company if it is found that he is guilty; but that he, the Third Person, could prove with declarations from the principal master workmen in Patna, who have never worked in this lodge, but have served under Raja Pitambardas, Mr. Daud Khan, and others, that the materials used for the said wall are sound and good; furthermore, that the thickness was taken more generously than stated in the estimate; wherefore he requested commissioners in order to measure the wall at the place where it is broken, below and above, level with the ground, when one would be able to be convinced of his above-mentioned statement, and which extra thickness he declared to have made good from the buttress at the point, which was still firm and strong, and from some old foundations that were found in unimprovable condition; and through which also that which will be needed to rebuild this breach can be mortared onto the same, without the cost amounting to as much as was proposed in the estimate, especially because all the materials of the collapsed part were usable again, according to the general opinion not only of the aforesaid masters, but also of the man who previously testified to their unworthiness; just as he, the Third Person, confirmed as truth what that man had told him. All of which having also been heard and taken into consideration, it was resolved upon the proposition of the Honourable Chief to postpone that matter for the present, until the entire lodge and the buildings shall be inspected by commissioners expressly appointed for that purpose, assisted by master workmen who possess sufficient skill, and meanwhile to keep record of all this. After they had been dismissed, this was discussed and taken into consideration that one might truly have been deprived of these goods had the merchants sold the same to one of the foreign nations, and that their claim to proportion the prices in accordance with the increase granted on the select sorts, or paid for the firtij in earlier years, was certainly not to be regarded as unreasonable, considering the quality of the goods themselves and the predicament in which one finds oneself to procure any coarse linen for the Company; but that since the said price increase granted on the 12th of the preceding month on the select lots was not calculated on the rejects, and the prices of the linens in general have decreased somewhat since the aforementioned years, it was, given that the Director was pleased to undertake to confer further with the merchants on this matter and if possible yet no final disposition, reduce their demand, approved and understood not to arrive at any final decision in this matter as yet, but to leave the regulation of the price to the care of His Honour. On this occasion, after the Council had come to the assembly hall, the well-mentioned Director presented to the members the complaint which the merchants had made more than once to His Honour about the strict and unequal sorting of their linens by one or another of the servants in the cloth hall, namely declaring the pieces which could easily pass for awel as dom, and again others which could very conveniently be accepted as dom as seem, and others as firtij, which could still have been accepted as third sort or seem, just as one, to speak of no others, had been able to see with one's own eyes and had to admit concerning the firtij of the coarse goods of last year inspected herebefore, and that such must certainly deter those people. lots deter 4462.

465. 831 10o. 76r. 11o. 762. proposition of His Honour: to dread undertaking the procurement, since, apart from the injustice and inequity inherent in such a way of acting, it necessarily caused them notorious damage. That, since in a time such as the present, when the collection of goods is so difficult and the delivery thus turned out very meager, one ought rather to use some discretion to meet the merchants halfway somewhat in such circumstances of the times, and not make their misfortune greater; and that although the subordinate officials in the Cloth Hall, who are accountable for the sorting, often appeal to the responsibility they had in this matter and that they had governed themselves according to the sample, His Honour nevertheless now had decided to propose to the meeting that, if in the future any complaints should occur again regarding irregular sorting, to repair collegially to the Cloth Hall, and to inspect all such goods about which a dispute might have arisen between the sorters and the merchants, and, if they are found acceptable, to make such sortings of the same as one in conscience and best knowledge would find to be fitting with equity. All of which having been heard, and the proposal made by the Director being judged to be very consistent with the complaints also presented and known to all the Members and to be just, it was, after deliberation, approved and agreed to conform completely therewith. Then, since according to the further demonstration by the aforementioned Director it would not be fair to have the employees in the aforementioned Cloth Hall, or those who had rejected or deemed less worthy such a resorted parcel of goods, sign for the disposition of this Ministry, but the responsibility thereof also ought to remain with the same, it was resolved, in accordance with the further proposal of His Honour, to have all such separately sorted linens signed for on the packing slips by the secretary of this meeting, not only for the trade, but also for the sorting, by order of the Director and Council, and subsequently to have those resorted goods packed in separate bales and dispatched under the responsibility of this ministry; whereupon it will also go without saying that from such goods, or goods dispatched in such a manner, in case one should be found to be in the right, the ordinary provision money shall not be enjoyed by the employees in the Cloth Hall, but shall be enjoyed and divided among those who have had the disposition over them. While finally it was also resolved to notify the hall employees of this decision by an Extract from the Minutes, in order to conduct themselves accordingly and, in occurring cases, not to pretend ignorance of the same. Further, two Memoranda having been handed by the Director to the Senior Merchant and Chief Administrator the Honourable Menso Isinck, to govern himself by their contents when projecting the returns for the Chambers Amsterdam and Zeeland, since therein all such goods as must be preferred for the other Chambers are marked with a cross, it was, considering that hereby not only the known and so often repeated orders not to send any goods above the Requisition will be fulfilled, but also a regular proportion will be maintained in the dispatch of all such returns as must depart in preference to the aforementioned large chambers, approved and agreed to keep this notation thereof, and, in conformity with the order of the Director, to keep an authentic copy of the aforementioned Memoranda preserved at the secretariat. Hereafter was read a request from the Bookkeeper Jan Christiaan Burchardt, wherein he shows at length how, pursuant to a resolution of this Meeting of the 7th of October, a favourable recommendation of this ministry was granted to him, both to the Noble, High and Honourable Lords Directors at the Amsterdam Chamber and to the High Indian Government at Batavia, both for the alteration or a proper identification of his name in the Company's books, in which he had been recorded by declaration of a crimp, as Jacob Enninger, and also for the distribution of four months of his earned wages to his mother pursuant to a monthly slip granted to the petitioner according to the aforementioned resolution; but that no license has arrived for the first-mentioned, and regarding the remittance the petitioner's mother had also remained deprived, since notwithstanding he had now for three consecutive years left the aforementioned four months of pay with the Company, and on account of the said remittance 120 guilders had annually been deducted from his account, his parents and attorneys had informed him that, despite the demands made for that purpose, nothing had been paid out to them so far; for which reason the petitioner very humbly requested that there might once more be granted to him a favourable recommendation, both for a proper identification of his name in the pay-books, and that the payout of the aforementioned four months of pay to his mother Anna Catharina Hilleman, wife of the present resident in Barbelroode in the Zweibrücken territory
