202. 203 The 19th of August 1766. The 19th of August 1766. 205 Deliberation on some Brootchia letters and papers received, passed. Authorization granted for the write-off. Andries van Teger, Junior Merchant and Pay-bookkeeper of this Office, in view of the service currently performed by him as Curator ad Lites, for what he might receive into his administration and accountability in this capacity, up to a sum of One Thousand silver Surat Rupees (at 30 heavy stuivers each), to stand surety and to establish their Honors as sureties and co-principals, thereby renouncing the Benefits of order, division, and excussion, binding therefor their Honors' persons and goods, both movable and immovable, placing the same under the constraint of all the Lord's Laws and judges. Yet, on the other hand, he, Pay-bookkeeper van Teger (being also present here), promised to fully indemnify and absolve his sureties, and the sureties each other for one half regarding this suretyship, and to hold them harmless and free from complaint under the same obligation as above. Consenting that an instrument in standard form be drawn up and delivered hereof. Thus done and executed in the Netherlands Office at Souratta on the day, month, and year aforesaid, in the presence of Egbert Nicolaas Wiardi and Hendrik Spierejee, Clerks, as witnesses. The minute hereof is properly signed and written on a 24-stuivers stamp (underneath stood: which I attest / lower down: was signed: D:k Spiereje First sworn Clerk). Finally, proceeding to the deliberation on some letters received from the Brootchia officials, it was approved and resolved, first, to pass the two specifications received from there, being one from the First Factor Christiaan Heydeman on account of some gifts made to the Regents on the occasion of his appointment as First Factor amounting to f532:-:-, and one from the Second Factor Josua Hen on account of the expenses incurred by him during his journey thither amounting to f100:-:-, both for the same reason that moved the Council to approve the two aforementioned specifications of Junior Merchant van Teger; and to authorize the said officials to write off the gifts made by them to the Son and Brother of the city Governor to the amount of f124:10:- on the occasion of their paying a visit to them and, in the name of the aforesaid Governor, coming to present a piece of land, with the request that the Honorable Company would construct there a lodge or other buildings, as it might deem serviceable for storing its goods; it being at the same time understood to decline this offer, as being entirely unsuited for the Honorable Company, and to have the said Governor politely thanked by the aforesaid Factors for his offer. 204. Had drawn a bill of exchange amounting to roa 6750 on this office necessary expenses, Production of an extract from a private letter from the former Resident at karreek Htouting. Advance of funds for delivery of linens to the suppliers. having occurred, which the Director, both because of their urgency and their minor importance, settled immediately with the advice and consent of the assembled members, record is therefore kept of this beforehand, as is customary; namely: On the 19th of August just mentioned, the Director approved the sentence presented and pronounced by the Honorable Court of Justice of this Directorate in the case of the Fiscal Rienier van Harn, in his official capacity, against Dirk van der Linden of Nimegen and companions concerning desertion, according to the following document. The undersigned Director, having attentively read and reviewed all the documents pertaining to the trial initiated by the Honorable Fiscal van Harn, in his official capacity, against Dirk van der linden of Nimeegen and companions concerning desertion, approves the sentence pronounced therein yesterday by the Honorable Court of Justice of this Directorate as it stands, and allows the same to be pronounced and executed in the proper place. That the vessels sent to the Island of Premegher have passed by again upon arrival, That the Lord Director had conferred with the Members concerning the thefts on the unloading vessels and the disorder during the presence of the ships. Therefore produced a Notification alongside an Ordinance, And that a great necessity was found to provide against this. today approved, and resolved to enact, order and make known, as is hereby enacted, ordered, and made known, to The Honorable Head Administrator, Fiscal and Equipment Overseer of this Directorate, The Commanders of the Ordinance granted. — Order concerning the Collection Money Each time after the religious service has been performed, the Collection Money shall be poured out of the bag by the Almoner in the presence of the Minister and Sexton, counted, and its amount noted in a separate little book, which the Minister shall be obliged to fetch from the Honorable Second when necessary and return there again; after which the almoner keeps the Collection money in his possession for further accountability. On that very same date, the vessels, which according to the resolution of the 19th of August last were to depart for the Island of Premeger as soon as the weather would permit, undertook the voyage thither, and returned from there again on the 17th. The Honorable First of that month, The Lord Director having spoken with the members concerning the frequent thefts that are committed on the Unloading vessels within the River, and the many irregularities that take place on board during the presence of the Ships, through the admittance of so many bad Natives under the name of Servants and brokers, whose principal aim is either to steal themselves, or to entice the crew to theft, and that on that account it was necessary to provide against this, while the Ships were expected any day, His Honor simultaneously produced a Notification, alongside an Ordinance for the ship's Commanders, on behalf of the Judicial servants who customarily keep watch on board, brought into draft by His Honor, of the following Content. Notification Whereas experience has shown that during the presence of the Honorable Company's ships, and especially during their unloading, gross thefts and frauds are committed, not only to the great detriment of the Honorable Company's interests, but also to the considerable damage and encumbrance of those who must deliver and account for the Cargoes: thus it has been deemed necessary to provide against this in the best possible manner, and on that account it has been in the Council of Policy ships, the commanders of Unloading vessels and Servants all;
