Whereas the chief surgeon Pieter van der Sprenkel has neglected to enter this amount of ƒ38:2:— in his specification and to receive it from the Treasury, it was resolved to have the same brought to the credit of the Profit Account now, [illegible] but to have the ƒ20:5:— entered in excess by the dispenser David Taillefert paid back into the Treasury forthwith; and to deliver the disused calibration irons to the blacksmith's shop, as well as to have their reduced value written off to ƒ3:4:–. Below stood: Thus done, resolved, and which have been affected by other extraordinary occurrences; an increase in the expenses arising from the decrease in prices on some merchandise items, against the Memorandum of Retrenchments of the 2nd [illegible] 1742, ƒ258351:4:— presented by the Honorable Chief Administrator, taken During the extraction and extension of the general expenses, the following errors were discovered, to wit: [illegible] debt: 2. 19:—. The Honorable Chief Administrator further presented a statement account, drawn up from the trade books of this Directorate for the Year 1763/1764 which are about to be closed, whereby it is briefly yet clearly shown: 1. That this office, compared to the previous financial year, has advanced by ƒ258351:4:—, but taken on its own by as much as ƒ601618:12:—. As well as the difference in profits: 2. That the profits in the Memorandum of the year 1755 were calculated at ƒ867000:—:—, and that the same now only amount to ƒ729006:19:—, thus less by ƒ137993:1:—. However, that this mainly has its origin in the successively decreased selling prices of sugar and Japan copper, and in the lower supply and consumption of spices; likewise, that the expenses in that memorandum were set at only ƒ119500:—:—, and that the same have indeed amounted to ƒ127388:7:—, thus more by ƒ7888:7:—. Although this account contains everything in itself that merits attention to form a well-founded judgment, and upon its accurate review as little is found regarding the profits and charges as the debtors, creditors, and balances that merits any special remark, it was nevertheless resolved to commission the junior merchants Reinier van Harn and Anthonij Julius Bangeman to inspect the trade books according to order, and in the meantime to incorporate the aforementioned statement of account into this. Short presentation of the true state of the Honorable Company at the office of Souratta, as the same in comparison with the previous book year and against the determinations made in Anno 1755 has turned out at the closing of the trade books on ultimo August Anno 1764. 1. General Indication and Comparison of the Profits and Charges of this against the previous Book Year. The profits of this year have amounted to ƒ729006:19:—. And in the past year only ƒ469420:15:8. Thus now more ƒ259586:3:8. The charges of this year mount to ƒ127388:7:—. And those of the previous year ƒ126153:7:8. Thus now also more 1234:19:8. Consequently, this office is now, in comparison with the previous book year, ahead by ƒ258351:4:8. Yet taken by itself, or if one deducts the charges of ƒ127388:7:— from the profits of the year itself amounting to ƒ729006:19:—, then indeed a considerable amount of ƒ601618:12:— remains. Arising from the general reduction of the sale prices, but primarily those of sugar and Japanese copper since Anno 1753, according to which it is guessed that the memorandum was arranged; And 2. from the lesser supply and consumption of the following spices, namely: 22500 lb cloves 1850 lb cinnamon 400 lb mace whereupon the net profit alone would have amounted to a sum of ƒ125000:— more or less. The charges are determined by the Memorandum of Retrenchment at ƒ111500:—:—. By the Regulation on allowances for the servants of Ultimo May 1755, there was further granted to the Director and the lesser employees circa ƒ8000:—:—. Together amounts to ƒ119500:—:—. And since the occasion presented itself, His Honour produced the following papers, namely on 7 April last: that a ship under a Dutch flag, having departed from Cochim on 2 March with the intention of going to Souratta, had returned to Cochim upon receiving news en route that the fleet of the Marhettas was at sea, and that he thereupon prepared the following letter, dispatched it with the Honourable Company's Harkarra, and a few days ago received in return not only a friendly answer, but also a separate written Parwanna or order addressed to the head of his armada, the Governor of Bassijn, containing an express order not to molest the Dutch ships, but on the contrary to take care that the mutual friendship be maintained; and that His Honour could not fail to produce these papers, of which the translations read as follows. Draft, Persian letter written by the Honourable Director Christiaan Lodewijk Seuff to the Marhettas prince Madoeraauw, dated 16 April 1765; After the titles: It is now more than a year ago that I arrived here in Souratta. Since then, I have heard much spoken of Your Serene Highness, and your name is held in great esteem by everyone. But I am particularly pleased because I have experienced that your subjects live in good friendship with me. They certainly do this because Your Serene Highness has expressly so ordered them. And since I can conclude nothing else from this than that Your Serene Highness bears a sincere affection toward the Dutch Company, it could happen along the coasts of Mallabaar that Your Serene Highness's vessels daily cruise, and the ships might commit hostilities against the armada, thereby giving displeasure to Your Serene Highness. To prevent this, it is necessary that the captains of the ships receive orders that they must always treat Your Serene Highness's armada amicably. And I shall see to it that such orders are given to them, if only Your Serene Highness will assure me that the armada will likewise do no harm to the ships and vessels of the Dutch Company. Visaji Keshav, whose treasures may never perish, and whom God preserve, be greeted by Madhavrao Pardhan, and let it be known: That whereas the Director on behalf of the Dutch Company in the sea city of Surat, Christiaan Lodewijk Senff, has brought to remembrance the friendship that has so long existed between the aforesaid Company and us, complaining that their ships laden with merchandise, often passing the Malabar coast, have been subjected to several harassments by the fleet of our state, which often stays and cruises along the same coast; requesting therefore that this might be remedied by us; so it is that, in consideration of all the foregoing, we are addressing this to you, in order that you give the necessary orders to the fleet, that they act according to the old custom, since heretofore such never happened, as now happens, that the ships were disturbed, which you must now also prevent. The Council having read these documents and remarked thereon that, since this order was not sealed with the common seal, but with the signet of Madhavrao, it indeed seemed as though one could place some reliance on his good intention, but even if this were not so, one might nevertheless in these times consider it a good thing to have become acquainted with that supreme ruler and thus to have a foundation to be able to put his disposition to the test on another occasion. It was resolved not only to keep a record of the foregoing herein, but also to inform Their High Excellencies thereof, and to send the aforesaid Order to the Governor of Bassein at the first opportunity. The Lord Director also produced a brief note received from the Governor of Ahmedabad, in reply to the one previously dispatched to him, which however contains nothing worthy of any remark, and on which account His Honour also declared not to have spoken of it, except only to be able to state further: That together with that letter had also come here the suwaran of Ahmedabad, named Deshmukh Visaji Rao, a ruler of very high standing, who, intending to go to Pune to the supreme ruler Madhavrao, had been presented with robes of honour not only by the city Governor but also by the English chief. The 22nd August Anno 1765 hoped that this year, in a short time, one or two ships from Batavia would appear in these roads, and that he therefore also judged it necessary that some vessels be rigged and sent to the mouth of the river in good time; and after extensive discussion on this matter, it was resolved by unanimous vote: to have the narrow-ship the Beschermer, the yacht the Vlieger, and the land boat prepared immediately, and to hire the crew for them into service as of the 1st of September; but to wait with the remaining vessels until the 1st of October, unless necessity should require it sooner.
