That furthermore the quicksilver since Anno 1762 was demanded yearly, and on the 24th of February 1764 the last time, but in the following year was specifically excused, although it had already been petitioned for them at that time, as the servants might well have presupposed, and why it was also resolved here on the 12th of November 1765, since having been publicly auctioned it found no buyer, to send the same to the servants. And after all this was heard with attention, it was resolved to confront the servants, under an expression of displeasure, with this inattention of theirs, and to seriously recommend not to furnish this Ministry with such misleading reports in the future; and henceforth to use all deliberation when drawing up the Demands; and above all to keep the orders and regulations in mind. Absent the members Zinner, Lafont, and Haghadamius, due to indisposition. There was submitted by the Director a memorandum drawn up by the Invoice-keeper Jan Hendrik Haghadamius pursuant to the resolution of the 24th of October last, concerning that which the current Patna Chief, the merchant Cornelis Rietveld, in his capacity as former First Warehouse Master, would still have to compensate for the deficit on the spices from such chests as were found unsealed at the inventory and the transfer of the warehouses by him, Rietveld, to his since deceased successor, the junior merchant Christoffel Maurits Doeve, under ultimo February 1765, reading verbatim as follows. Whereupon, after deliberation, and it being understood with the Trade Bookkeeper that this is certainly the best way to avoid all trouble, it has therefore been resolved to authorize Ross to leave the aforementioned Resolutions of the 29th of July and the 26th of September, in so far as they concern this account, unexecuted for the present, and for the rest, or in the meantime, to let him act according to his proposal regarding the collecting of old and new duties. A certain Jochem Olof, having served in the free trade and to that end having been discharged at Batavia in the year 1765, having requested by petition to re-enter the Company's service in his former capacity as Boatswain, it was resolved to grant this, and to assign him the pay that he had earned as such, or f 17 per month, under a new contract of three years commencing today. Points of rescript Certain question of the Patna servants On the 27th ultimo, the general, secret, and separate letters from the servants at Patna dated the 17th of the same month having been delivered here, on this occasion the Director produced the points of deliberation excerpted from the first-mentioned letter; and it was initially seen with great indignation that the servants have not only seen fit to come forward with a scornful and offensive remark containing little substance against the gentle admonition given to them in our letter of the 25th of October not to make much ado in the Company's papers about one difficulty or another except in case of utter necessity, but even to add a bold question thereto, asking whether, if anything occurs, they should just let it take its course without reporting anything, or how they should act henceforth, etc., as can be seen in greater detail in the letter itself. And this having been deliberated upon, it was judged superfluous to refute at length the pettiness of the servants' reasoning and the aforesaid question; but it was resolved merely to point out to them that this administration, persisting in its order of the 25th of October as containing clearly enough what is actually required from subordinates in the service of the Company, must conclude from this and from the further representation also to be found in this letter concerning the detailing of soldiers for the receipt of saltpetre, that the spirit of opposition and the desire to have the last word is beginning to animate them again; but that they would be well advised to beware of this and, in accordance with their duty, to conduct themselves according to our orders; while it was also approved to point out to Chief Rietveld, regarding his special representation that the spoiling of so many books as mentioned in the Resolution of the 24th of October last cannot be imputed to him, that the same has been improperly brought up, since from the remark concerning it, if one understands it properly, no such thing can be inferred. After reading of a written justification, by the first warehouse master Johannes Mattias Ross, against the compensation imposed on him in his capacity as former dispenser by Their High Noble Excellencies, in the formal rescript of the 11th of July last, for the loss incurred on the arrack sold here in anno passato from the import of the ship Scholtenburg, amounting to f 2169:15:-, besides another 54 percent advance on the entire lot, and regarding which he was permitted, in the meeting held on the 26th of September thereafter, to bring in his interests: it was, in accordance with the request made by the said Ross at the end of that paper, approved and agreed to respectfully submit this his defense, with the favorable recommendation of this council, to Their High Noble Excellencies at the earliest opportunity, since nothing appears to the meeting therein that is not in accordance with the truth, and for which reason the aforesaid apology shall be sent in originali to Batavia and registered in authentic copy at the Secretariat.
