After resumption of a report submitted by the Senior Merchant and Head Administrator, the Honorable Menzo Isinck, regarding the finding of the discharged cargoes of the ships Jonkvrouwe Cornelia Jacoba, IJsselmonde, and Vreedenstein, item concerning that brought by the sloop de Troonprins, of this content: Findings of the shortages and defects on the discharged cargoes of the undermentioned ships which recently arrived here from Batavia, as appears from annexed reports of the ordinary and special commissioners, regarding which the undersigned requests the decision of the meeting for the instruction of the trade bookkeeper, to wit: By the ship De Jonkvrouw Cornelia Jacoba According to the report of the administrators, in the presence of the ordinary commissioners, Tuesday 160 the 162 163 the 16th of December the following short weights were delivered into the trade warehouses, namely: 125 lb Japan bar copper short, having been invoiced at 150000 lb, and received by the administrators 149875 lb, thus 125 lb short, or 1/12 percent. 8½ lb Bangka tin short, whereas the invoice dictates 5000 lb, and received by the administrators 4991½ lb, thus 8½ lb short, calculated at 1/6 percent more or less. 8¾ lb spelter short on a parcel of 5003 lb, which were invoiced, and only received 4994¼ lb, thus 8¾ lb short, or 1/6 percent more or less. According to the report of the commissioner members from the Council of Justice, the provisional merchant P: Humbert and the under- merchant G. Herklots, there was found short in the presence of the provisional fiscal Otto Willem Falck at the gross weighing of the undermentioned spices in the trade warehouses: 40¾ lb on 43 chests which according to invoice should contain 1290 lb cloves and 3737 lb nutmegs net, and conform the memorandum of the commissioners at the main administrative center were weighed out to the ship's officers at 7623 lb gross, yet upon re-weighing here only found to be 7582¼ lb ditto, thus a short weight of 40¾ lb, amounting to 1/16 percent of the ship's weight. 15 lb mace on 10 succuls, which conform the invoiced notation should contain 1540 lb net, and according to the above-mentioned memorandum were weighed out to the ship's officers of that vessel at 1697 lb gross, but upon re-weighing here found no more than 1682 lb ditto, and thus 15 lb less, or 7/8 percent more or less. According to the annexed declaration, the undermentioned birds were short-delivered, as: By the ship IJsselmonde: According to the report of the administrators, there was short-delivered in the presence of the ordinary commissioners into the trade warehouses: 8¼ lb Bangka tin, whereas the invoice dictates 5000 lb, and only received in the warehouses 4991¾ lb, thus 8¼ lb short, or 7/6 percent of the ship's weight. Pursuant to the report of the commissioner members from the Council of Justice, Lieutenant De Lille and the under-merchant Herklots, and in the presence of the provisional fiscal Falck, there was found short at the gross weighing of the undermentioned spices in the trade warehouses: 300 lb on 215 chests which according to invoice should contain 6450 lb cloves and 17244 lb nutmegs net, and conform the memorandum of the commissioners at the main administrative center were weighed out to the ship's officers at 3437 lb gross, but upon re-weighing here only found to be 34096 ditto, thus a short weight of 300 lb, amounting to ¼ percent of the ship's weight. As appears from the report of the special commissioners, the assistant Dolle and the cooper Kroese, there was found in the dispensary: 221½ cans of arrack in ullage on 25 leagers, calculated at 2¼ percent more or less. Thus 8½ lb short or 1/6 percent roughly 1 piece Large Porcelain enamelled bowl out of 5 pieces ditto Gilded Japanese dish out of 12 ditto According to the Report of the Commissioners, Members of the Council of Justice, Lieutenant de Lille and the Junior Merchant Herklots, likewise in the presence as before, upon the gross weighing of the hereinafter mentioned spices in the Trade Warehouses, there was found short 278 lb on 190 chests which according to the Invoice should contain 5700 lb Cloves and 15079 lb Nutmegs Net and In accordance with the Memorandum of the Commissioners at the Main Office, were weighed out to the ship's officers at 31849 lb Gross, but upon reweighing here found to be only 31571 ditto. Thus 278 lb underweight, calculated at 1/8 percent. Hereupon the said Chief Administrator produced four other findings, namely: one of 3000 bags of saltpeter brought down from Patna in the month of January of this year under the supervision of two soldiers; concerning the opening of three suckers of mace, from the delivery of the ship De Jonkvrouwe Cornelia Jacoba; regarding the garbling of a parcel of 3733½ lb of nutmegs, received by the same aforementioned vessel; and concerning the garbling of another parcel of 3997 lb brought here by the ship De Jonge Samuel. The undersigned Testamentary Executors of the Estate of the late junior merchant and former Patna Second Andries Iurgen Schultz show with respect: That they, the Petitioners, upon taking reconsideration of a Statement of distribution prepared by the Invoice Keeper Haghadamius regarding the compensation for a parcel of Opium sold at a loss, mentioned more broadly in your Honorable Resolutions of the 3rd and 24th of October last, have seen that the said Schultz is placed to participate therein to an amount of 1891 ¾ Rix-dollars, without it clearly appearing therefrom whether the present second Hardij was involved no further than in the procurement of 151 chests, and enjoyed no more commission money than for the collection of that quantity; which, however, both by the nature of the matter and for the peace of mind of the Petitioners, ought to be shown clearly and circumstantially, the more so as according to the invoices of the 15th of December 1764 and 15th of February 1765 it is doubtful whether Schultz conducted the trade of the parcels then dispatched with the Chief, or the signer thereof, the aforementioned Hardij, because it only states therein: traded by the Chief and the second; and that on an invoice of the 26th of November 1764 signed A: I. Schultz, only 301 chests are acknowledged as collected by the Chief and the second, whereas the Statement nevertheless claims that 358 were traded by them. That whether the Invoice Keeper, in making the distribution, was guided by those invoices or by the report of the merchant Lafont, and thus according to the tenor of those papers established indisputably that Schultz is responsible for the co-procurement of 358 chests, it nevertheless appears from a Patna letter of the 12th of May 1765 that the present Second Hardij himself acknowledges having a share in the collection of 152 chests, and consequently has been charged for one chest too few. That the matter becomes even more doubtful without further clarification if one wishes to adhere to the distribution made and the receipt of the Commission monies, since according to a Statement rectified here and to be found at the secretariat, the said Hardij was allocated 1363:4:8 guilders for 9 months, and Schultz only 454:4:8 guilders for the remaining three months, without ever having drawn more, as can be seen from an warrant dated 30 December 1765 Letter A resting in the petty cash, showing that this small sum was deducted from him in reduction of a certain compensation. That, on the other hand, it is also true that according to the aforementioned Patna letter Hardij has indicated that he claims no more than was due to him for the co-collection of 152 chests, and that in the cash account of the month of May 1765 no more is brought up as having been paid out to him than 573:17:— guilders, but that on the other hand 789:7:8 guilders remained undivided, concerning which no further disposition was made, nor did anyone have any benefit from it. Since therefore it has not been shown on any certain foundation why Schultz must pay more than Hardij, and the Petitioners, as stated, owe an accounting to that end to the interested parties in the Estate. Therefore, they humbly request that the matter may be rectified and the said Invoice Keeper may be ordered to make a clearer demonstration, both in respect of the quantity procured and the receipt of the Commission Monies. Subsequently, upon the reading of an Attestation from various officers of the ship Jongvrouwe Cornelia Jacoba, it was seen that the sailor Jacob Pieter van Swijkhuizen, by another person with whom he had been busy chopping cordage, accidentally had three fingers chopped off his right hand, as the Attestation itself, which is inserted herein for consideration, shows.
