The expenses of shallops and lesser vessels in the year 1764/5 amounted to ƒ40914 8 8 And in this most recently passed financial year only ƒ34328: 10: 8 Thus less by ƒ 6585: 18. — From which deduct what in the year 1764/5 was furnished to the shallop the Troonprins, which in this financial year was to the capital, amounting to ƒ 3854. 10:8. Which having been deducted, it appears that in the year 1765/6 less was spent than in the previous financial year ƒ2731: 7: 8:— This difference consists of the greater number of lost ropes, anchors, and grapnels in the first-mentioned financial year, whereas in the last-mentioned. Did Your Honours wish us to arrogate to ourselves a power which has never been exercised under the most independent princes of this country, a right to all the products and manufactures of the Nawab's dominions to the absolute exclusion of the natives themselves, and of the other privileged European possession, we mean the Danish East India Company? No, Gentlemen, we are convinced that such could never be Your Honours' intention; however, these consequences would infallibly arise from the plan of a division of the weavers. We are likewise convinced that if this proposal could take place, it would only serve to lay the foundation for far greater differences between us, and for more injurious hindrances to our respective collections, through the desertion or neglect of the people employed by each Company. Your Honours ought to know, Gentlemen, that while the complaints made by Your Honours are couched solely in general terms, which cause mutual refutations, it is impossible ever to settle the differences. Therefore, the only clear way remaining to adjust our differences consists in a brief and impartial inquiry into the matters. To this we appeal. Your Honours, Gentlemen, have yourselves requested that such an inquiry might take place; we request now that the same may be continued, not only in the aurangs but everywhere where differences have arisen, to which end it is that our commissioners await yours. With regard to the census of the weavers, our sentiments were so fully declared to Your Honours, and we flattered ourselves that the force and justice of our arguments in our last letter on this subject would have appeared so clear to Your Honours, that we had never imagined we should have been obliged to repeat the same to Your Honours. However, while we find Your Honours still persist in demanding a division of the weavers, we find ourselves under the necessity of declaring, finally, that it is a measure to which we will never, for any reason, consent. Indeed, it tends so clearly to the irreparable diminution of the revenues, through the exclusion of the native and foreign merchants from sharing in the trade of silk and cotton piece-goods, which taxes make up such a considerable part thereof, and whose industry is the means of importing such large sums of uncoined gold and silver into the country, that it would be an act of the utmost injustice to allow the same to take place. If, Gentlemen, notwithstanding our repeated applications, Your Honours nevertheless still persist in refraining from ordering Your Honours' commissioners to begin this work, we shall naturally be obliged to conclude that Your Honours' representations are without foundation, and of such a nature as would oblige us to recall our commissioners or to send them to execute the other articles of their commission.
