242 ult=o Feb: previously and a calculation of what will have to be expended for the remedying of the defects made known therein, which was not very excessive as it amounted to only f=ar 3407„5„ - or ƒ 5366„10„8., and in which the repair of one of the most necessary warehouses alone shares &=a o 2660„14„½ or ƒ 4190„18„12, we decided on the said day to let the restoration of both proceed as soon as possible, and the same decision was also made regarding the report reviewed by us on the 15th of this month of the discovered defects under ult=o Aug=s, which according to the calculation annexed thereto will cost s=r r:o p=s 6127„ 2„¾ or ƒ9650„5. rm:, and none of which were included in the general calculation made in A=o 1765 and approved by Your High Nobilities. Also, at the session of 17=e 9br: last, a memorandum incorporated by resolution of that date was passed concerning extraordinary repairs to the fort and the the buildings amounting to s=al 3097„5„ — or ƒ 4077„17½ while, with regard to Your High Nobilities' recommendation of frugality and remark that the expenses of the extraordinary repairs had run rather high, we refer to the report of the overseer of the buildings Gregorius Herklots inserted by resolution of 11=e Jan: last, now recently sent over in copy along with the answered findings of the trade books of A„o 176 1/5. At Kassimbazaar, the expenses of repairs made, or what pertains thereto, consist solely of what was spent on renewing the mint house at Harriem=Abaadh, and of which two memoranda and a summary were sent to us along with the servants' letter of 15=e Aug=s last; the same are incorporated in the resolution of 20=e ejusdem, and show that the entire work comes to F=o 6 1159 4 8 9/63 or ƒ18261„8., thus rop=s 1924„8 23/3 more than what was proposed there 243 in a calculation incorporated into the resolution of 26=e. 9br: 1765, arising on the one hand from the higher cost of the timber, which had to be purchased pursuant to our license granted for that purpose on 5=e April previously, because most of the beams sent thither by the prisoners were found to be too thin, and on the other hand because of the deeper digging of the foundations and a greater use of lime and brick than had been estimated before, item some other necessary but unforeseen expenses, made known in detail in the summary. However, seeing that the servants came to assure us that everything has been made firm and strong, and we find nothing to object to regarding the expenses that caused the previously made estimate to be exceeded, we also agreed to the servants' request to pass and write off the entire amount of the aforesaid memorandum, and we request Your High Nobilities' favorable approval thereof. From Pattena, on the other hand, several several particulars have occurred which again make this matter differ considerably. The defects that were stated in a calculation of 12=e May 1765 and agreed to be repaired by Your High Nobilities have been remedied from time to time, but all this still seems insufficient to put an end to so many troublesome representations about the deteriorating condition of the Company's buildings at that office. Before we speak of that, however, it will not be improper to cite here the successive reports and memoranda of the said repairs received from there, amounting to the following; the first we received along with the servants' letter of 3=e April last, consisting of four items, namely: One of the pillars at the chintz printing works and the stairs in front of the flat roof, amounting to - - ƒ 1360„6„— One of the lodgings next to the house of the Secunde - - - „ 2246„1„8. One of the dwelling of the Third - - - „1406„9„ 8. And one for the collapsed section of the South East wall - - „ 7100„—„6 and according to what was communicated in the aforesaid letter, the expenses for the pillars come to d„o 7:/2„ 15 or ƒ 14„1„8: the stairs to a 1„ 8 or ƒ 2:7:4., the house next to the Second to s=a ƒ 22:14:-. ƒ 22:1:—, and the collapsed wall to b=a E. 508„ 2„ - or ƒ 800„ 6„— higher than the calculation; but the house of the Third, on the other hand, amounts to s=a E 5„ or ƒ 7„17„ 8. less. The higher expenditure on the wall is attributed to a more generous use of lime in order to make the work firm and strong, and to prevent the danger of a new collapse, which is said to be most feared there because of the considerable height of the earth of the garden which the wall had to withstand. Sum we shall discount with the authorized agents of the repatriated third person Ludolph Hoerenaar, to whom the servants requested that the same might be paid out, but who on the contrary, by virtue of what was ordained in the formal rescript of 21 July 1767 and our deliberations held thereon on 14 October, have been declared liable for half the amount of what the rebuilding of the collapsed part of the frequently mentioned wall has cost, or ƒ 3550 0 3, and the other half is to be paid by the merchant La Font; furthermore, the declaration found by Your High Excellencies, under presentation of oath, regarding how matters transpired during the measuring of the wall, is to be found among the annexes hereof in original, though granted only by the assistant Willem Cadet stationed at Pattena, since the assistant Pieter van der Sluijs, who had also been commissioned, had died before receipt of the order. The aforementioned memoranda Your High Excellencies may, if pleased, find with the resolution of 29 April, and with that of the 5th of the recently passed month, an amended one, of repairs done to the house of the secunde, because according to what was stated in the servants' missive of 27 September, through a carelessness of the checker, the number in guilders was incorrectly stated and in the first it was said to calculate ƒ 2246 1 8, whereas according to the latter it amounts to only ƒ 1122 19 8, and according to what was further noted in the just-mentioned letter and simultaneously recorded in the above-mentioned resolution of 5 February, the additional expenses for the pillars in the chintz printing works amount to sa. 892 15 0 and not 672 15 0 as was first stated, the repair having been estimated at 6460 3 0 and according to the sent memorandum it had cost La. 553 2 0, for which committed small errors the servants requested pardon and we recommended better attention for the future. With the frequently mentioned letter of 3 April was also sent to us a report from special commissioners showing that the gallery of the clerks, upon inspecting the flat roof, so far as the woodwork is concerned, was found to be in a very bad condition, as all the beams, especially at the ends that had been inside the wall on both sides, were decayed and completely rotten, so that in addition to the estimated three, another ten, or in total thirteen pieces were required, which the servants had caused to be purchased; then, as we had to allow this, we could also not refuse our approval of a memorandum, sent over in an accompanying letter of 7 June and inserted by resolution of the 23rd, of what the repair of the said gallery came to amount to, being sa. 1667 12 or ƒ 2626 14 0, which is sa. 6749 14 0 or ƒ 1181 3 1/16 more than had been estimated for it in the year 1765, originating not only from the purchase of the said ten beams, but also from the tearing down and rebuilding of a wall on one side of the building. The three last memoranda of what was still lacking for all the aforesaid extraordinary repairs were lost with the original Pattena letter of 27 December, and thus on 24 January last, upon our request made for them, sent over once again in authentic copy; they were entered with the resolution of the 5th instant, namely: One for the Chief's house, amounting to ƒ 2935 8 For the soldiers' guardhouse ƒ 433 18 and For the flat roof of Warehouse No. 2 ƒ 687 12 0 the first costing sa. 619 12 0, the second No. 64 8 0, and the third 588 4 0 higher than was granted for it according to the frequently mentioned estimate. Far more difficulties presented themselves to us when the servants, for the first time in their frequently mentioned letter of 3 April, requested our permission for the remediation of various dilapidated dwellings, such as among others the house of the chief with the outbuildings, the room of the secunde on the river side, the south wall of the residence of the third person, the gallery in front of the kutchery on the beach and the room there, as also the west wall of the surgeon's room, item the room of the corporal and the guardhouse on the west side or the so-called red pulpit, all of which looked very bad, and in the event of a heavy incoming rainy season,

time could not well be inhabited without danger to life, but for the greater part were subject to an apparent collapse, as had already been stated in a later missive of 29 Aug. and in a report incorporated into the resolution of 16 7br: 1766, because we judged our disposition on this paper to be unnecessary, inasmuch as we were then under the impression that the said defects, if not all, at least the principal ones, had to be counted among those for whose repair license had shortly before been received from Your High Nobilities: so that, before deciding upon this further request of the servants, we thought fit on the 28th of the aforesaid month of April to have them first specify which of the same were included among those of which the repair had been granted by Your High Nobilities, at the same time ordering them to send an estimate of what would have to be spent to put in order all such buildings 248 buildings of which no estimate had previously been made or for whose repair no consent had yet been granted. The servants sent us this paper on the 1st of June following, and it was, High Noble Sirs, not without astonishment that we saw therein that for the repair of all the aforesaid dilapidated dwellings, an enormous amount was newly required of s=a l 1217 12 — or ƒ 19085 19 8; item that our thoughts concerning what had previously been granted differed so greatly from what was advised by the servants, namely, that among these newly stated defects there was only included the soldier guard or aforesaid red chintz room, for the remedy of which s=a ƒ 270 4 - or ƒ 427 1¾ — had been set in the approved estimate of 12 May 1765; but which had since fallen into such a dilapidated state that there was no repairing it anymore, and thus it necessarily had to be entirely renewed, and for which they had now also calculated. We were requested for a license to set to work and at the same time to be allowed to spend a further 600 Rop=s on Warehouse No. 2, which in the aforesaid estimate was said to be remediable by the renewal of a flat roof at the cost of f=or r a 348 — — or ƒ 548 2 —, seeing that the same had to be entirely rebuilt, because the walls were then tottering on their foundations, and the mortar was crumbling out everywhere, as was further affirmed in a report of Express Commissioners that was incorporated in the resolution of 24 June, and when we judged it most advisable to postpone the disposition for the time being, partly because the rainy season had then already advanced so far, and before our answer could be yonder would be so severe, that we found it entirely inadvisable to begin the demolition of dilapidated buildings, and partly because, among all the reported defects, none appeared to us to be of great urgency, and 249 furthermore it was assured by the merchant La Pont that the servants lacked no space for storing the Opium and Linens, but indeed primarily out of a real dread of such heavy expenses, at a time when one could not imagine otherwise than that one might have been free from such extraordinary expenses for some time. could serve the Company, requesting at the same time that, if they had to proceed according to the above-mentioned instruction, they might then remain exempt from all compensation for damage that the linens were visibly about to suffer, expressly protesting against all accountability in that regard. In order not to be too prolix in an affair that will otherwise appear distasteful enough, we shall not repeat here the particular defense of the aforementioned Honorable Jsinck and La Font against the manner in which the servants opposed their statements—made, as they affirmed, without the least view of partiality—nor the remarks that were made concerning the possibility that the aforesaid warehouse could have become of such a wretched appearance so suddenly, or in less than a year's time, but we refer to our resolution of the 20th of the aforementioned month, pursuant to which, in order to break off all hateful pen-strife, we authorized the servants on the following day to make an immediate beginning with the repair of all such defects through which the Company would suffer more damage by further delay, however without such a binding restriction and conditions as we at that time deemed highly necessary for our own protection, but which the servants regarded as an iron too hot to be grasped. In short, on the 27th of the following month, they raised a heap of difficulties in the execution of that conditional license, against which they made several objections in an annexed minute, about which, however, we could not judge with reason until the 5th of the past month, since the original letter, as has been said more than once, had been lost along with the minute, and the copy of the same did not reach us again until then. We had them registered by resolution of the above-mentioned date so that Your Right Excellencies might grant yourselves the time to read through them and judge the matter in its entire context, wherein we at the same time request that Your Right Excellencies also be pleased to review that which the first undersigned, for the exoneration of the servants, caused to be recorded prior to the resolution of the 4th of December, the more so as this might well serve toward the approval of our resolution taken on the 5th past, upon the communication from Pattena by letter of the 24th of the previous month, alongside which was sent anew the inspection and survey of the buildings, under the 16th ejusdem, when the outgoing chief Rietveld made the transfer to his present replacement pro interim, the junior merchant Falck, who assured us, in the said letter, of not having relied upon the statements of the commissioners, but of having inspected all the defects in person and substantially found them to be as stated in their report, so that he, who had attended the remaining business regarding this matter, deemed that he would fail in his duty if he neglected to add his affirmations to the representations that have been made on this subject in previous letters; and wherefore the servants jointly requested that their statement be fully accredited and such a disposition be taken concerning it whereby the damage that was expected from a longer postponement of the necessary improvements, and among these principally the Linen Warehouse, might be prevented, all of which persuaded us on the 5th of February aforesaid, however painful it may be to cause the Company to feel the burden of such oppressive expenses, nevertheless to grant our consent to the remediation of all the arising defects. Upon the return of the little Nawab, Lord Mahmed Reza Chan, from Calcutta, the Director, upon the notification given to him in that regard, was obliged to go visit His Excellency with some members of the Council, on which occasion a horse and head ornaments were presented by the Post, the value of which, according to a report entered into the resolution of the 19th of this month, amounts to Ao 61205 or f 1807:10. To present herewith in original to Your High Excellencies, in order to be provided with Your High Excellencies' orders thereupon. Meanwhile, at the meeting of 25 August, upon another report submitted by the Trade Bookkeeper and incorporated by resolution concerning various omissions and improper procedures discovered by him during the compilation and continuation of the Journal of the year 1767, we made such arrangements as are recorded at large in that decision, and of which we judge no other repetition needs to be made here except that, in accordance with the 9th point, the 2500 lb. of pepper, for which the authorities of Ysselmonde were credited in account in the autumn of 1766, but which was subsequently, or at the session of 27 January 1767, discovered to be an error, we have caused to be charged to Batavia instead of credited to it, as was found to have occurred according to the resolution and invoice of account of the aforesaid date; item, to send an extract of the eleventh period concerning the prices that were to be obtained at the subordinate offices for the fine spices, for the information and observance of the employees for the future, as well as of the 17th item, in order to prevent such omissions as were shown there to have occurred in the Journal of the year 1765/6, namely forgetting to credit the Main Account for a 7 3/13 percent rebate on a draft amounting to ƒ 6300.-.- granted in that book year to the Merchant La Font, and on account of which, besides the redress that was to take place here, we wrote to the employees on 23 September thereafter that, when money is counted into the cash box by them, to credit the capital to the account of the office in Bengal and the customary rebate to the profit and loss account, and also to charge this main office in that manner; furthermore, regarding the item of Sa. 27720 39/63 Sicca rupees remaining outstanding in the books on the account of deficit, as appears from what was noted in our decree of 17 November, it was sufficiently of the same draft, as Your High Excellencies, whose pleasure we made known in that regard to the Trade Bookkeeper under delivery of copies and extracts both of their marginal decisions on two reports of the Examiner and Bookkeeper General sub 27 September, and from the letters of 18 June and 7 April past; as well as, pursuant to the permission granted in the former, we also instructed him to credit the account of the late Mr. Kersseboom with ƒ 3904.16.8 and to write off the remainder of his debit amounting to the sum of ƒ 8660.5.8 to the debit of the General Office; and with regard to the weapons of 6 military personnel that arrived in the year 1764 from the Cape, and charged from there by invoice of 14 June, which according to the orders in the first cited letter were to be taken in and accounted for by the person who should have taken care of that, it was decided by us during the business of 14 October last to redress this in this manner, namely indeed to take in the same weapons, but immediately to write them off again, just as we have further qualified the same Trade Bookkeeper, upon his representation made in our meeting of 26 January last, to redress a minor error discovered by them in the issuing of a draft to the Kassimbazar Warehouse Keeper Daniel Overbeek, who, as can be seen more fully in the resolution, had counted ƒ 125.-.- too much into the cash box on it, and which we thus caused to be credited to the said office, in order to be refunded to him there out of the cash box, which has also taken effect as appears from the advice of the employees of 24 February, under a representation from the Chief, the Honorable Johannes Bacheracht, that this was no ignorance or negligence on his part, but a mistake made by Overbeek himself, as having neglected to inform his correspondents in loco that his intention was to receive a net ƒ 1500 in Europe, instead of counting only so much at Kassimbazar, and thus receiving that much less in the Netherlands. Furthermore, upon a memorandum submitted on the 11th of this month by the Trade Bookkeeper of such items as were to be redressed and transferred in the books under ultimo August 1767, we decided to carry out everything in accordance with his proposal, the said memorandum having been inserted in the resolution, to which we respectfully refer regarding the matter itself, as it requires no further special mention here. Regarding the clarification expected by Your High Excellencies as to where the two whole and eleven half leagers, which were taken out of the ship Schoonzigt in the year 1764 and, according to the statement made to us, were supplied to the sloop De Haring on its voyage to the Coromandel Coast, finally landed or ended up, we cannot report otherwise than what was shown to us for that purpose, in satisfaction of what was required at the session of 31 January 1767, on the 7 November thereafter by the then retiring acting Equipment Master Cornelis van der Stam, namely that one cannot find this out, because there are no longer any persons present who can shed light on the matter. entered in the extract invoices, and containing no matters that require a further citation here; seeing that nothing has been transacted upon that on which Your High Nobilities' orders are awaited, in our respectful missive of the 11th of January last, we nevertheless enclose these by way of extracts. For the examination of the books of this main office, the Council Members Jan Pieter Humbert and Louis de Saumaise were commissioned on the 4th of the past month, who on the 18th of this month served a written report, and although the same is already inserted by resolution of that date, we nevertheless believe we should add a separate extract thereof for the further viewing and consideration of Your High Nobilities, whereby Your High Nobilities, if it pleases you, will then see that the principal disposition consists, by virtue of Your High Nobilities' latest order—that the supplementary charging of this or that entry to the Netherlands may not take place if the same cannot be there in time enough, or yet by the sale of the goods, but must remain for the account of the defaulter—of indemnifying the Company through the invoice keeper Mr. Johan Hendrik Hagha Danielsz for various errors committed in the invoices of the return and other ships mentioned therein, nevertheless reserving his right of representation against this to Your High Nobilities, two persons having also been appointed as commissioners to investigate the reason and origin of the said discrepancy in almost all the entries of the returns that ran as balances on the books under the last of August, and what was actually found there, some, as the aforementioned Council persons cite, in the number of pieces, but most in the sum of money, and for which they lacked the time to examine everything accurately and to make it fully known in the report, so that we shall not be able to report on that and on the further commission required of the same commissioners therein until we have the honor to write further to Your High Nobilities in August next, since time and attention will be required to unravel all those confusions, which is also the reason that the aforementioned Council persons could not finish their work any earlier. Citing the remaining matters from it here appears to be superfluous work; nevertheless, it should still be noted that the aforementioned invoice keeper, in an invoice recently dispatched per the ship Huisten Donk, mistakenly charged back to the main place the amount of f 3904.16.8 credited from there to this Directorate, for which, as already stated here before, the account of the late Mr. Kersseboom was credited by order of Your High Nobilities, instead of the remainder of his debt with f 86601.5.8, which is now corrected, however, and charged in another invoice, as also takes place, pursuant to the authorization granted for that purpose, with various entries that were charged too high in the invoices sent to the Netherlands per the ships Vredestein and Jonkvrouwe Cornelia Jacoba, in order to be sent, if Your High Nobilities please, per the after-ship to the Chambers participating therein, and thus, if possible, to prevent the false yield that the same must show upon sale. Yet, just as our disposition for the payment of those entries that were charged too little, and whereby the Company would suffer damage if provision had not been made regarding them in the manner aforesaid, occurred with reservation of the right of representation against it, so on the aforementioned day we could not refuse the invoice keeper, who showed himself aggrieved in that regard, his request for a notation that all the aforesaid errors pointed out in the aforesaid report were to be corrected, and that this had also already taken place regarding most of them in the general redress invoices which, pursuant to the above-cited resolution of 28 April 1767, must be drawn up annually under the last of February. Nevertheless, to confirm the same, we also believe we may appeal to the previously cited order of Your High Nobilities, by virtue of which, if not in March, then at least in November 1767, regardless of the aforementioned stipulation, the demonstrated errors should have been corrected, or a further disposition thereon should have been requested by the invoice keeper himself, had he discovered them in time enough, without waiting precisely until the last moment. But since this, and all other numerous mistakes and omissions appearing in the frequently mentioned report, as well as the discrepancy of other charges with the books, are to be blamed on inattention and a too late observation of duty, for the awakening of which stringent measures have the best effect, it was decreed on the aforementioned day, in addition to what was resolved on the 23rd of May 1766, that, while maintaining the resolution dated 23 August 1765—according to which the respective administrators are obliged to submit the statement of charges for the inland offices fourteen days after the departure of the vessels—the invoices of charges must be ready six days thereafter, on penalty of forfeiting 30 sicca rupees by the invoice keeper for every invoice that might be drawn up after that time, for the benefit of the church here, which for reasons to be mentioned hereafter has been given an account on the books; while at the same time the resolution of the first-mentioned date has been renewed, namely that the statements for the expense accounts must be delivered three days before the appointed day of departure of any ship or vessel, since otherwise all charges will remain for the account of the defaulter, and of all of which the duty of

Furthermore, pursuant to the provisions in the extract from the general resolutions of the Castle of Batavia dated 29 November 1762 and the 22nd current, a report of the debtors appearing on the books was also submitted by the trade bookkeeper, which is likewise inserted by extract from that resolution and transmitted under the annexes hereof, wherein distinct notes have been kept regarding what could be said to be applicable to each item; as, among other things, that regarding the debt of the French Company amounting to f 39375.—.— on 7 November 1766 we showed the necessary documents to the Lords and Masters, nevertheless very humbly asking Your High Excellencies' pardon for the misunderstanding we had on our part by speaking at the same time of writing off without the money having been paid; this item, as well as the debt of the English Company in London of f 42142.11.8, remaining running until a further opportunity to settle the same; and further referring ourselves to the resolution itself, we have the honor to inform Your High Excellencies on what was laid down under this chapter in the formal rescript of 21 July 1767: that the Council of Justice of this office was notified by extract from the same of the prohibition lifted by Your High Excellencies against the disbursement of funds from the estates of Ribaut and De Wilde and the expectation that the same would soon be brought to liquidity and the interest of the Company would be taken care of; while as regards the debt of Jacques La Tour amounting to f 11775.2.— and concerning which Your High Excellencies also renewed their former order to take care that the Company was kept harmless without this depending on the uncertain legal proceedings concerning the estate of Ribaut, there is also repeated here with respect what was noted in the margin of the aforementioned report concerning the examination of the books, namely that since no money or effects could be found here belonging to either La Tour or to the repatriated Junior Merchant Decker as having married the widow of La Tour, one could do nothing other than proceed by way of attachment on what Decker in right of his wife had to claim from that of Ribaut, and for which, as appears from what was noted again in the aforementioned resolution of the 22nd of this month, pursuant to a judicial sentence of the Council of Justice of this office rendered on 31 March and pronounced on 7 April 1764, there has been declared attached and executable what the aforementioned Decker has to expect for his claim of f 63996.9.8 from the aforementioned estate of Ribaut; for which reason that debt, as well as what Ribaut himself still owes on the books in the amount of f 30681.10, will have to remain running until such time as the proceedings concluded here upon the same shall be determined, in case of appeal, before the Honorable Council of Justice of the Castle of Batavia. The heirs of the former broker Damoedher are continually dunned for what he remained indebted to the Company. But he persists in the previous and real excuse of inability; we also submissively ask Your High Excellencies' pardon regarding the answer concerning the writing off of the small vessel Chinsura, with the humble demonstration that the request made on that account by marginal decision on the report concerning the trade books of 1764/5 under 29 March 1765 actually had regard to the aforementioned small vessel, and that for that reason the authorization received to that end by the honored missive of 11 July 1766 was put into execution; further that we imagine that Your High Excellencies had mistaken this vessel (possibly on account of what was reported by us concerning the sale of decommissioned sloops once mentioned, by respectful letters of 9 March 1763) in calling it sold and decommissioned, for which reason we maintained that we did not do ill, following our obligation expressed just before in the letter of 19 April 1766 regarding the received license to write off the entries in general that created those improper and imaginary gains, to let follow that brief elucidation that the said small vessel was neither sold nor decommissioned. And whereas, pursuant to what was enacted by an earlier extract from the general resolution of 18 July 1766, upon drawing up the annual balance accounts, both the general and the private ones, a distinct specification must be delivered by the trade bookkeeper of the entries brought under the item of the debit and credit accounts, with an addition of the nature of each entry and what changes in each of them have occurred upon comparing the latest closed account against the preceding balance account, we have accordingly in our meeting of the 25th of this month resumed the report delivered by the trade bookkeeper regarding the state of the memorandum accounts as of ultimo August 1767, wherein everything is clearly and circumstantially treated, and which also accompanies this in the manner of an extract, with extracts from those documents to which he refers, namely the report inserted by him concerning the books of 1765/6 at the session of 16 January 1767 or actually treated in that resolution, which is, so to speak, a repetition of the previous report regarding the debtors in particular, item what was demonstrated at that regarding the examination of the books, and we note that the outstanding funds on the delivery of linens under the aforesaid last day of the book year 1766/7 amounted to ƒ2489214 7 —, the advanced funds on the delivery of gunny and packing material ƒ49364 14 8, the outstanding debts ƒ194141 10 —, the running accounts ƒ869641 17 8, or these items in general a sum of ƒ3602362 19 —, item that the various running ahead together sum up to ƒ657415 3 —, which we considered not improper to mention briefly here, although the aforesaid order was principally established to demonstrate these matters to the Gentlemen and Masters, for whom we therefore request a favorable addressing of the accompanying packet, if it should appear timely enough to be transferred with the following ship, and otherwise as Your High Right Honourables shall be pleased to deem fit to achieve that purpose, the copies of the letters enclosed therein being attached in copy under the annexes of this letter. In the Cassimbazar letter of 12 October last, the state of the office as of ultimo August prior is inserted, and alongside it we have received a report from the commissioned junior merchants Daniel Overbeek and Jacob Nicasius de Meijer concerning the examination of the books, whereby it appears that, as far as could be traced, no errors or improper transactions have been discovered therein. The same was inserted in the resolution of the 20th of the first-mentioned month, and no other particular arose in that regard, except an annotation that of the ongoing debtors, the entry of Moetsiram on advances for reeling wages of ƒ31310 8 —, for reasons already noted long ago by decree of the 14th prior, was dubious and has since increased to 6452 8 —, in which respect we, by virtue of Your High Right Honourables' recommendation to take care that the Company suffers no damage in this matter, request a favorable and inclined reflection on the reasons argued in the abovementioned resolution of 14 October, regarding the absolute impossibility of using more supervision against this than appears from the books to have taken place since the years 1754/5 to 1761/3, and the cause that simultaneously makes it impracticable to eliminate this entry entirely from the records or to settle it. The discrepancy between the trade books and cash accounts, which the servants represented to us in their letter of 12 November 1766 and we noted in the resolution of the 20th of the same month, was found to be no essential discrepancy, but a clerical error in the cash account of the month of December 1760, and which has been redressed in the manner noted in the resolution of 20 October last. But the difference with the currency to the amount of eight stivers and eight pence, having not been able to be found due to a lack of certain documents that were lost, has consequently remained ongoing until there shall be an opportunity to conduct a further investigation into it. Finally, regarding the minor error of 19 stivers arising from a discrepancy between the invoice of account dated 10 December 1766 and the ledger balances of the goods, this could not be reduced otherwise by the Second Hardij on the grounds of the latest order concerning the further accounting. Thus, to conclude this matter, we further have to report that the opening balances entered in the books of the year 1766/7, having been compared with the closing balances of those of the previous financial year by the two first-mentioned individuals, and the copies having been collated against the originals by the Head Administrator and the Commercial Bookkeeper, the first-mentioned, along with all the relevant subsidiary ledgers both of the internal offices and the respective administration, are currently transferred in a separate chest. Item, that among the annexes of this letter, besides the statements of expenses on merchandise both of this head office and the subordinate factories of Kassimbazaar and Pattena, there is also to be found a copy of an answered extract, received on the 11th instant from the first-mentioned office, concerning the findings of the Bengal trade books of the year 1764/5, principally serving as proof that the lamp oil, about whose price remarks have been made, was contracted from the supplier at 9 stivers per seer or ƒ —„ 18„— per can, being the lowest price for which he would accept it, and is therefore 35 1/4 percent cheaper than before. Regarding what remains to be said concerning this head office on that subject, we will declare ourselves under the following chapter, concerning the general charges, whose presentation as of the ultimate of August 1766 had given Your High Excellencies no satisfaction at all. The expenses at Kassimbazaar, according to what is shown by the servants' letters of 12 October and the comparisons inserted therewith in the resolution of the 20th, amount to ƒ26058„16„—, thus ƒ2099„5„– more than in the previous financial year, caused by higher courier wages paid, principally for letters sent from Hoegli to Patna and vice versa, amounting to ƒ353„3„—; the higher amount for the maintenance of four horses, which were in the stable for twelve months in the last financial year and only two months in the preceding one, with ƒ72„8„—; the more paid on land salaries, being ƒ211„11„8; and the more spent for rations, oil, and medicines, amounting to ƒ16„7„8; and finally because this time there did not come to the credit of the account, as in the previous year, horse head ornaments received from the Nawabs, valued at the amount of ƒ2504„5„—, but on the contrary, it is still charged with the cost of a lot of Eastern fowls and their maintenance amounting to ƒ97„14„—, of which it had remained free in the previous year, whereby this expense item came to show ƒ1505„14„— more, although the expenditures for it in general, compared against each other, had amounted to ƒ1916„5„— less, as well as the extraordinary charges, item the carpentry and repairs, to ƒ627„11„— less.
