5 13 April earnest money was thereupon given on Pottor, and in this manner affairs in this aurang have always proceeded. Since then, there arrived here on behalf of the Honorable English Company one Bersjoekis worchan as gomasta, who also conformed to the ancient custom, and under his supervision we for the Honorable Netherlands Company were ready on the same footing. Subsequently, in place of this person, there appeared a certain kisworsandaal, who upon his arrival summoned all the weavers to him, set a price on the count of 100 threads, abolishing cash purchases and introducing the advance payment of earnest money, while also putting into practice all feasible means of severity toward the weaver, whereby our business is obstructed, while besides this 22 factories have been erected by private Englishmen. These people spend 16 rupees for the same linen for which we previously paid 10 rupees, and as a fixed limit has been placed on the goods of the Dutch Company, how can we trade at such a high price? However, since time is running out, we have come to terms with the weavers, and after much dispute of words, and by conceding something, finally made advances on 2 to 3 pieces of goods. One does not even dare to make these openly for us; but that which is intended for us is woven in a separate place in secret, and 4 to 5 months pass by before one obtains a piece of goods, without it even then meeting the sample, which is also the reason why we have not been able to deliver the linen this year. Mohanenapoer From of old it has always been customary here that one could go to the market with cash for all three companies to purchase linens, each according to their needs, without this being hindered by anyone. But now the English Gomastas have made a survey of all the looms in the various places, and have also given earnest money to all the weavers for their service, on the condition that those who weave ordinary assortments must deliver two pieces, and those who manufacture fine goods one piece a month, compelling them with force to complete the same if anything is lacking. Beyond this number the loom cannot produce any more pieces of goods, while besides the registered number, those who have hidden themselves here and there, and who in previous years made our goods, have had to bind themselves for the benefit of private Englishmen, 52 13 April for whom heavy outlays are also made. We thereupon sent money by peons to the house of the Thokdaar, who accompanied them to us in the factory, saying that he could not provide us with any linen, as he had first to fulfill the contract entered into with the English for providing a certain quantity of linen per month; secondly, for the twenty-two factories of private Englishmen; and finally, also that which the French had to have, so that with all these being supplied, he did not know where he would get the goods for us. Nor would we obtain the goods for the price that they spent for them. It was indeed possible to provide us with something, provided that one paid a little more and could supply us with weavers. After deliberating with one another, we sent one of us to Teintoelial to purchase for cash and to make advances, but the English Company's Gomastas made our men depart from there, finding ourselves unable to obtain the goods from the Pykaars and Thokdaars by force. To still obtain something there is no other means than to keep these people as friends and to pay somewhat dearly for the goods, for it is utterly impossible to recover the arrears that are with this or that person by treating them strictly and taking them prisoner regarding the debts they contract. This is the course of the aurang, which makes it impossible for us to proceed with business, or to deliver the goods on time, and may also be said to be the reason why the goods cannot be manufactured according to the demand, we having to content ourselves with taking what the thokdaar

13 April brings to us Kantoe Baboe holds in lease the village of Koensing, where several assamies, as bankrupts of the Company, have settled themselves, without the peons whom we send thither being able to accomplish anything. Beddel Getsjee As soon as we arrived here, we summoned the dallaals to us in order to give them the advance money, but they appealed to the well-known inconvenience, namely of not being able to take the money of the Company without the permission of the English Gomastas, who had made them execute moetsjelkas; this is the reason that we have sat with the order for six months. Afterwards, or in the month of October, when we found an opportunity to win over the dallaal to our interests and to give him a promise of a somewhat higher price, we provided a little by way of Patton, but even with this not a single piece of cloth has come in up to now. Having spoken with the dallaals about this and urged them to a speedy delivery, they declared that it would drag on until the month of January before the collection of the English Company could be completed, and that in February and March they would help us as much as possible; in that confidence we furnished money, but the old delivery for the English was not yet finished when the money for the new contract was already seen appearing in February. Forthwith, the necessary advance of this was given to the weavers, and the monthly contract with them renewed, wherefore no piece of cloth was brought to us. If we send out peons to address the weavers about what they owe us, they answer by saying that the English peons roam about everywhere and place chapps on the linen that is stretched on the loom, and thus demonstrate the impossibility of weaving the cloth for us; so that the work cannot make any progress without coercion regarding the weaver. The Malmols and Bethilles Kangam are manufactured at Sietpoet and Panap Deegie, and there also a little Polton has been given; some goods that have been finished remain with the dallaal, who does not dare to deliver them without orders from the English gomasta at Malda; also exorbitant trading is carried on here by private Englishmen, and the price of the goods is likewise excessive. On the 1st of January of this year, it was proclaimed by beat of drum at Ommerpaer on behalf of the English that all those who should venture to weave linen for the Dutch and French Companies would have their nose and ears cut off and moreover be condemned in fines, all of which is also known to Monsieur Natiaal. For these reasons we are not able to deliver the linen to the Company in due time; the dallaals even say that if we do not employ other means we run the risk of not getting back our outstanding moneys with the weavers. Subscribed: according to the statement of the broker Ram Gopaal Raey, translated by, was signed, Jacob Eilbracht. Upon which, on the proposal of His Honorable Worship, it was resolved to have that paper delivered to the Court of Justice for sworn attestation, in order subsequently to make such use of it as shall be deemed proper. And whereas, according to this representation of the well-mentioned Lord Director, the ship Vaillant, according to the opinion of the pilots at Fulta, where it was to be moored according to the resolution of the 7th instant, does not lie as safely as here before the fort, partly on account of the fierce currents, which at the setting in of the rainy season are much stronger below than here, and partly on account of the danger of sickness and mortality that is to be feared among the crew in a place with such unhealthy airs during the rainy season as Fulta, which remains under water at least until mid-September, without any refreshments or provisions being obtainable; it was agreed to conform with the order already given by His Honorable Worship to let that vessel sail up before this fort. Points of Rescription concerning the Linen Trade Lastly, after the inspection of various linens and the agreement made to assemble again tomorrow and the following days, and to record the result of the entire work in a resolution of the latest date, in order to prevent the repetition of one and the same thing as much as possible, the proceeding turned to the deliberation over the letters received on the 9th and 11th instant from Patna and Dhaka, dated the 28th of last month and the 5th of this month, by the first of which, with regard to the linen trade, it was seen that the reports concerning the collection since the

The servants' letter of 22 February had not yet changed for the better; on the contrary, the linen supplier, having recently returned from the weaving district, had come forward with no fewer difficulties than in the previous year, principally amounting to the known inconveniences, namely the large purchases and violent conduct of the English Gomastas, obstacles which have already become settled and a kind of custom, and which mostly show that the linens do not decrease in price. Consequently, the servants, also upon the supplier's testimony that he could deliver them at a better price than before, and the assurance given to them by others that his representation was true, in order to lose no more time, had ordered him to proceed with the purchase at the previous prices, under the usual express condition that the goods must agree with the samples. Whereupon, this having been deliberated and nothing found to object against this conduct of the servants, it was understood to consider this well done, and at the same time to grant their request to make a moderate advance to the linen supplier, as also the refusal to sell the spices on credit. Proof etc. concerning the delivery of the remaining peeskes. since, since their last report, 5000 pieces lay ready in reduction of his arrears, which were also due to come in shortly, after the receipt of which his debit balance would be nearly cleared. It was likewise understood to approve that the servants had refused the merchant who, according to their letter of the 13th of last month, had bid on a parcel of spices, but had hitherto been prevented by a continuous lack of money and had thus applied to them several times to receive the same on credit, with this request of his having been rejected, as squaring not only with the orders, but also with the rules of prudence, at a time when they themselves must confess that matters with the merchants in general are in such a state that one no longer knows whom one could trust with anything of importance. In compliance with the requisition of this assembly by missive of the 6th of February last, to give a detailed explanation as to which of the defects in the Company's buildings previously proposed on the 24th of January were already included under the estimate sent over on the 7th of June and 2nd of July of the past year, as well as on the consideration proposed by the servants at the same time regarding the work that was about to be undertaken, all circumstantially noted down by resolution of the 5th of the aforementioned month of February by him, after an apology for having delayed this so long, it being communicated that the defects which were made known in the aforementioned estimates are all noted on the latest report inserted in the aforementioned resolution, some, however, under different names, but that in addition to this on the last-mentioned was still listed the dilapidation of a warehouse behind the Third's dwelling house, another near the linen warehouse, and a third near the chintz printing works, as well as of the so-called chobdar khana, which were all absolutely unusable; furthermore, the defects in the dwellings of the Third, and a clerk's room, to the stables and some others of lesser importance. 534 13 April That since the estimate of the 2nd of June 1767 already amounted to S. r. 12117:12 and that of the first of July to S. r. 3158, or together S. r. 15275:12, and thus the repair of the other defects calculated pro rata would rise very high indeed, while yet no more than the old buildings would be repaired, which thus far had served only in the most defective manner for the storage of opium and linens, and in the second memoir of the Honorable Councilor Extraordinary of the Indies and Director of Bengal, Louis Taillefert, of blessed memory, were already described as wretched little apartments; the servants, upon the consideration demanded of them, thought they should propose to this ministry to demolish those old small warehouses and rather employ the money that would necessarily have to be spent on their repair for the erection of three new, airy warehouses for the storage of the opium, linens, and the imported merchandise; which the servants maintained to be 535 13 April the only means to free the Company for many years from the heavy expenses of extraordinary repairs, adding that the terrain upon which the Company's factory is built, although otherwise fairly extensive, formed such an irregular shape that if one were to demolish the old small warehouses, which were small and stood at an angle, there was not enough room to erect spacious and airy warehouses. 536 13 April had, and through the assistance of Maha Radja Sitoet Raeij in this matter succeeded so far that the Company could take possession of it as soon as this council should see fit to authorize their servants to that end; thus they now, under this pressure of the usefulness of the proposed project, came to request permission for the purchase, demonstrating that this spacious plot of land was estimated to cost around five thousand rupees, including the stone buildings standing upon it, the materials of which could be employed for the new buildings, and on the supposition that regarding that sum perhaps something slightly lower might be negotiated, but with a warning that if this opportunity passes by, it will probably never present itself so advantageously again; furthermore, that regarding the cost of the buildings to be newly constructed, a good calculation could hardly be made, since of the old demolition materials perhaps much and perhaps little might be employed, which, on such a major work, could make a difference of several thousand rupees, 537 13 April could differ; besides and apart from the fact that the chief Talck had particular difficulties in proposing a certain fixed sum for a work of that importance, regarding which the meeting agreed with his caution all the more because, in order to show that it was no excuse merely to be relieved of the work and to give this council grounds for deliberation on this subject, he presupposed that if, above the aforementioned amount of heavy florins 15275:12, another four or five thousand rupees were spent, not only would the defects mentioned in the first calculation be repaired for that, but also three new airy warehouses, suitable for the Company's business there, could be built solid and strong of lime and surkhi, not with earth as is often done, and for which expenditure the Company would thus at once be freed from those heavy expenses that have risen so high over the past three years; finally, that it was indeed true that the marginal decisions of the High Indian Government, taken on the aforementioned memorial of the late Honorable Mr. Taillefert, 538 13 April taken, did forbid the constructing of new warehouses, but that the servants here believed they dared to contradict the consequence that might be drawn therefrom by what was added at the same time, namely to maintain the present ones in as good a state as possible, which, as they were in total decay, would probably cost just as much, or at least not much less, than the construction of new ones: thus, after proper consideration of all these elaborate reflections and well-founded reasonings, it was first of all agreed to be satisfied with the servants' proffered excuse concerning the delay with this report, namely the uncertainty in which they fluctuated as to whether they would achieve their objective regarding the aforementioned piece of land, and the insecurity which the matter would thus have had if they had come out with the one and the other sooner; furthermore, to grant the requested authorization for the execution of the plan, in the expectation, however, that the chief Talck will negotiate the tightest price regarding the piece of land, and will also use all care and accuracy so that the buildings to be newly made 539 13 April The sight-gifts made to the nawab Tessarethehan approved under recommendation. and further necessary repairs are solidly and strongly attended to for the sum estimated by him of 19 to 20000 rupees, and above all that there is not lost from sight the presently more than ever applicable and so highly recommended rule of frugality, since everything that can be profited thereby may well be counted as pure gain. Saturday the 16th of April, Anno 1760, in the morning, all present except the Merchant Lafont. The Honorable Director and Council having met again today for three consecutive days in the cloth hall to continue the valuation, begun on the 12th of this month, of the assorted piece goods on the Patna demand for this year, it has been agreed to note that all the blue and white romals, being mostly of very poor quality, and contracted for at s:o 2: 61:2½ the corge, are reduced three percent in price, except the goods of Kommelboos and Mirza Abdue Kassem, which were found reasonably good under the circumstances of the time; furthermore, that on the fine photas, which satisfied the sample as little in color as in workmanship, no percentage increase was likewise granted, which comprised the bulk and still delivered quite good assortments. Finally, it was also approved to declare the ordinary photas rejected as unacceptable goods, and to lock them up in the rejection warehouse for the account and risk of the suppliers, until such 542 16 April time as they shall have supplemented their contracted quotas with sound and acceptable assortments, by which precaution their way will be cut off from bringing forth those rags a second time. After dealing with that which is noted by separate resolution of today, the Honorable Director communicated to the assembly that the Merchant and Vendue Master Martinus Koning came to ask His Honor, in the name and on behalf of the Merchant Mozes Lafont, as co-heir and principal testamentary executor in the estate of the late Master Attendant Lucas Zuidland, for permission to put up for auction the house and grounds, situated beside this factory, of the late Honorable Extraordinary Councillor of the Indies and Director of Bengal Joan Albert Sichterman, named Welgelegen, which, according to a conveyance shown by His Honor, executed on the 2nd of November 1765 by Lady Sibilla Volkera Sadelin, widow of the said Mr. Sichterman, in the capacity ascribed therein of possessor of the estate of her said husband, before the Noble Born Hendrik Willem Hoving, Doctor of Both Laws and fellow Grietman of the Kampere in the province of Groningen and the Ommelanden, 544 26 April was ceded to the aforesaid Zuydland for the sum of sixteen thousand current rupees, and, according to a letter also exhibited from the aforementioned widow Sechterman, written under the same date as above to the said Zuidland, had also been left authorized to sell the aforesaid house and grounds, either publicly or as he, Zuydland, should see fit; that His Honor had found difficulty in consenting to the aforesaid sale, partly because His Honor doubted whether a deed such as this, by which the ownership of the house was transferred to the often-mentioned Zuydland, executed before a single person without witnesses, was indeed compatible with the laws of Holland, according to which the Honorable Director believed he must govern himself; and secondly, whether Lady Sechterman (who is indeed said to be the possessor of the estate, but regarding which His Honor had heard from other quarters that besides Her Honor there were not only co-heirs, but also testamentary executors in the estate) in such a case alone had the right to surrender the aforementioned house; at least that the Honorable Director for his part requested that this objection of his be recorded by resolution, 549 26 April under further announcement to the aforesaid Lafont that he would not consent to the public sale of the house unless the Council of Justice approved the aforesaid conveyance. And it was agreed to note all of this in the manner aforesaid, as well as to grant the aforesaid Lafont, upon his request, an authentic extract of this Resolution. 555 3 May Tuesday the 3rd of May 1768, in the forenoon, absent the members Lafont, Koning and Haghadamius due to indisposition. The Lord Director having shown to the meeting how the owner of the parcels of saltpetre that were sold to the Company in January and March of this year upon their arrival from Patna had addressed himself to His Honorable Worship and lodged their complaint regarding the weighing in of the aforementioned saltpetre, the maund at 72½ lb Dutch, whereas it had always been a custom to calculate the maund at 68 lb Dutch or 71¼ lb English weight, with the request that one should not do them short in this matter, but would still pay the 4½ lb which they had delivered more per maund through this weighing-in than if one had proceeded according to the old custom; so it is, considering that the members were of one mind with the Lord Director that one ought to encourage these people as much as possible to bring their wares to market with us and not to the French or Danes, whom they show to be very eager to purchase the same, approved and resolved to grant the request of the aforementioned merchants and consequently 551 3 May Kasimbazar still to credit them for the aforementioned 4½ lb of saltpetre per maund. Since, due to the desertion of Baren Janze, a pilot is lacking to complete the ordinary number, and the quartermaster of the sloop De Buis, Gerrit Henriks van Veen, has been nominated by the Master Attendant van Braam as a capable and prudent man, it was decided, in conformity with the proposal of the Honorable Worshipful Lord Director, to promote the said Van Veen to pilot at the usual pay of thirty-two guilders per month and a new contract of three years commencing today. Also, upon the recommendation made to the said Lord Director by the Commander of the militia, Captain Jan Hendrik Zinner, and pursuant to the proposal of His Honorable Worship, the corporals Joan Leonard Beyer and Christiaen Schagger were appointed sergeants, the former in place of Johan Carel Philip Hanze, who was promoted to ensign, and the other in place of the deserted Daniel Bausel, both at the ordinary pay of twenty guilders per month and a new contract of five years. Proceeding next to the business concerning 552 3 May concerning the Chief and the Council at the office mentioned in the margin, dated the 27th of the past month, it appeared at the outset that the servants, pursuant to the license of this administration by letter dated the 8th prior, made use of some money from the stock, and had provided from it, among other things: For the purchase of raw mochta: Sicca Rupees 5000 Pattenie: Sicca Rupees 5000 Together Sicca Rupees 10000 or ƒ15750:-, this has been considered as a consequence of the aforementioned authorization; and further resolved to send back for swearing-in the report received from there by the undersigned commissioners Daniel Francois de Bary and Jacques Benoist, regarding the re-weighing of the recently dispatched 2390 bars of bar silver from the consignment of the ship Vrouwe Cornelia Hillegonda, mentioned by decree of the 6th of the past month; since therein a deficiency of 1 mark 1 ounce 12 engels and 23 aas is stated; furthermore, to authorize the servants to write off the found underweight of 2 ounces 2 engels and 4 aas on that of Popkensburg as customary without money sum, since the 553 3 May the report sent back up-country on the 8th past, now sworn, has been received again, and consequently the resolution of the 2nd prior has been fulfilled, while it was furthermore noted as well done that the servants had sent to the mint the 664 bars that remained of the last-mentioned silver, the more so because, besides the 282000 rupees received back by them, the balance of the aforesaid parcel has been delivered again to the mint commissioners and the dispatched 2¾ lakh has already been received here. Regarding an invoice of account sent along with the aforementioned letter of 8 April, the servants requesting elucidation as to how they should act with certain ƒ14:- charged to their office, concerning which it was stated on the invoice that they were "the cost of 16 cans of lamp oil in the Hugli journal page 104 of the year 1768, omitted in the Kasimbazar books through failure of accounting, etc.", which the servants did not know how to allocate, as it did not appear when and on what occasion they were supplied, and whether they should thus be charged to bar silver, 554 3 May bar silver, they having been supplied, according to the further report made to the Lord Director, in August 1766 to eight vessels dispatched at that time with that metal up-country. It was further agreed to pass that the servants, pursuant to the license granted for that purpose on the 6th of February of this year, had delivered to the daroga of the Pachotra the usual annual contingent of Sicca Rupees 4000 or ƒ6300, as well as the demonstration made by them of the Gela Employ in the cash account of the month of March, on which, according to the testimony of the Honorable Chief Administrator upon examination made, nothing was found to comment on. All of which having been discussed, and the continuing difficulties and impediments in trade, being considered as well-known as common occurrences against which nothing else can be done than to hope for the best: it was agreed to note beforehand that the inspected samples appeared very good to the assembly, but because one must adapt to the circumstances of times and matters, and consequently it would be in vain to demand of the servants the procurement of a fixed quantity, it was deemed best and therefore resolved to them

567 6 May Discussion concerning a letter from Cassimbazar After the reading of the same, it was approved and agreed to have the 2460 pieces of suffocated long gunnies and coffee bags sold on occasion at one or another private auction for whatever they might fetch. After this was read the letter received the day before yesterday from the servants at the office mentioned in the margin and already circulated among the members for reading, being a missive of the 30th of the previous month, containing, after a prior acknowledgement of the receipt of the letter from this ministry dated the 27th preceding, a detailed report of the agreement made between the Nawabs and the English for the minting of rupees with the Arcot die in the mint at Murshidabad, of which the verbatim account follows below. Since then, we have learned for certain that the gentlemen Nawabs and the English, whoever the inventors may be, let us leave that aside, have agreed to have rupees minted with the Arcot die in the royal mint at Karienabaad, on which account we have received the following information from our mint commissioners. Furthermore, we have deemed it our duty to communicate to your honour that yesterday the Nawab gave orders to the servants of the mint to henceforth have the Sonaut rupees brought by him into the mint from ground rents alloyed and stamped into Arcot rupees, and to that end, also by order, an assay was made there by which the said rupees were found to be 17 of their arossen too low in touch, amounting in content by estimation according to European calculation to 11 pennyweights 16 grains; the said rupees will weigh in standard mint weight 10 massa and 568 6 May and saras ample, thus also differing in weight with the Siccas by 15 arossen [illegible], or rather 102½ Arcot rupees will be minted from 100 Seer weight; the die will be exactly the same as if they were actually minted in Arcot, or indeed such as were already minted two years ago and are still minted in Calcutta, which also bear the same die, and which can only be distinguished from the genuine rupees minted at Arcot by knowledgeable money changers through the fine engraving of the Persian letters appearing thereon. We have inquired precisely of the daroga whether the said rupees will circulate here, and whether other privileged parties, such as Jagat Seth and our Company, also had the liberty to mint the same if they so wished, who informed us in that regard that the said rupees would not circulate here, but are to be sent to Calcutta for the country's revenues, which ordinarily were previously transported in Siccas or Sonauts, and that the Nawab had ordered him, the daroga, to mint the same for no one other than His Excellency, and even then solely for Khazana Amara, or revenue monies. The undersigned, knowing the native workers at the mint and knowing that they make no difficulty about enriching themselves through improper means whenever they only have the opportunity, which is offered to them more than enough by this novelty, have, in order to guard as much as possible for the master's interests, also addressed themselves to the daroga, and presented to him and pointed out in the most serious manner the opportunity for fraudulent dealing that existed and would arise if the Arcot rupees were allowed to be processed by the same dherrahs who bring the Sicca rupees from bars to their roundness and weight, and also brought to his attention all the thefts and faithless dealings which, in our opinion, could in time take place under this new maxim by smelters, weighers, assayers, stampers, etc.; that he would therefore please, in order to prevent the same, deliberate with us on such means as were serviceable to preserve our good reputation with our superiors, by first separating some of the dherrahs at the place where refining is done and having them work there on all such rupees as were of lower content than the Siccas, to keep a die box and separate stampers for these, and to ensure that the Kanungo and Amins saw to it that the dies were faithfully kept, and that those of the Siccas were not mixed with those of Arcot; to all of which he, the daroga, gave us the satisfaction of having the first put into effect immediately, and gave the required orders and strict commands for the other, so we nurture hope and trust that the

This we could not refrain from bringing to Your Right Honorable’s knowledge, and to insert the entire section of the commissioners' letter concerning that subject herein; yet because it is a matter that does not concern us directly, and in which we, deferring to wiser judgment, believe that the Dutch Company has no interest except insofar as it must indirectly and as if imperceptibly share with the populace in the disadvantage that such arbitrary undertakings and innovations regarding the coinage will inevitably bring forth, if these rupees, like the gold ones recently, should be forced upon the community at a certain higher price than their proportion of other rupees is worth, we have made no stir nor any remarks concerning it, but have contented ourselves with encouraging the mint commissioners to proceed in their attentiveness and vigilance for the prevention of the frauds that are justly to be feared in the matter of the coining of rupees of different fineness and weight in one and the same mint, and what is more in one and the same room and by the same people, as they had already begun at the trial assay, thus to deliver the Company from disadvantage and themselves from accountability and loss, wherein we hope to have acted to Your Right Honorable's satisfaction. The reports which we have received today state that in all haste 50000 rupees of that die have had to be struck and that our coining therefore had to stand still for some time, whereupon the mint commissioners had the prudence to seal our silver at the mint. Upon which nothing else remained to be done than fully to approve the servants' conduct and diligence in the matter in question. Alongside a letter from the servants at Patna dated 22 April having been received the cash account of the previous month: thus, since according to the declaration of the Honorable Chief Administrator nothing is to be remarked upon it and most items of the 570 5 May sum of money shown in the letter have already been stated and approved in previous letters, it is resolved and agreed to pass the same as well as the advances made since of 15750 florins for the purchase of Opium and 24750 florins for the provision of Linens, of which the supplier has settled his arrears, of which mention was last made in the resolution of 13 April last, to within 837 florins. The Raja of Kharagpur and the head of the Jekwaards having troubled the servants for their usual annual contingent and the same having been paid to them with 1575 florins: thus, since this is a regular annual charge, the settlement of which cannot be avoided, it is resolved to pass this advance as well. It is also resolved to accept and in due time honor with payment a bill of exchange granted to Anendiran Thakoer for 13814:4 sicca rupees and to be paid here with 2½ percent agio to Rhennis Chan. From the Dhaka letter of 29 April, besides a communication that the funds advanced for the supply of coarse goods amounted to 51000 florins, there being also encountered a request from the factor whether, notwithstanding that in the instructional memorandum sent from here all the flowered linens, such as Tanjebs, Mulmul, and Dorkas, were specified to a length of 40 covids, he might have them made only 20 covids long, because the first-mentioned linen necessarily had to remain longer in the hands of the embroiderers than the other, and which was also the cause that the cloth came to lose much of its quality, becoming as it were half suffocated through the long-lasting handling: thus it is agreed 571 6 May to condescend to this as well as to the further request of the factor to retain the Bookkeeper Daniel Lankheet as his assistant, because it was too difficult for him alone, and Lankheet, besides knowing the language and customs of the country, through a long residence in this place, possessed some knowledge, the said Lankheet accordingly being to remain stationed at Dhaka as a clerk. Since, according to further communication from the well-mentioned Honorable Director, the last-made price of S:o 2: 197: 4 for 250 Seccas gross weight was offered for the supply of Imperial thalers consisting of 9236 pieces, it was decided to let them go for that, item to employ the remainder of the 17 May mark reals, or 50 1/26 mq:, insofar as this can serve, for the fittings of the baulk which, as appears from what was resolved at the latest session, is about to be prepared for Ceylon.
