Thus, considering that nothing appears therein which could be said to be overly overstated, it is resolved to grant consent to the undertaking of these repairs, provided care is taken that the aforesaid sum is not exceeded and the work itself is made solid and durable. Concerning the Iongalsche linens, it being demonstrated that they, the servants, would not be able to deliver all of them this year, seeing that the weavers refused to take money from those who had come to market too late, it is resolved, in consideration that one cannot demand the impossible of anyone, to rely upon the promise of the servants to collect as many of the same as feasible, and in that confidence that it will not be wanting in vigilance and good deliberation. In the cooper's shop, half of the flat roof of the workshop has collapsed due to the cave-in of three pillars, which being difficult to dispense with, it is necessary that said flat roof be renewed to the length of 47 and width of 26 feet, along with 7 pillars, of which three have collapsed and 4, through the collapse of the flat roof, have partly also collapsed or are severely damaged; the woodwork, being still sound, can be used again, only the two main beams and eight crossbeams being broken, yet after being sawn, they can be employed again as laths and laid in place of the laths that have decayed. In the blacksmith's shop, the chimney breast in the large fireplace is entirely ruined, and three water troughs, which were previously made of wood but kept rotting away, have been built up of stone by order of Your Esteemed Honor. The battery along the Ganges side near the church, or rather the stone platforms on which the artillery is placed, are entirely ruined, most of the stone courses having subsided, whereby the platforms are no longer in a condition to place artillery upon them; also they are much too short 95. 29 July short and too narrow for the pieces that currently lie there, appearing to have been made for rampart carriages and not for large field carriages such as are present nowadays, wherefore the same will need to be renewed and enlarged, or else Your Esteemed Honor might approve that a continuous stone floor be made, as this, in our judgment, will cost little more, since the space that remains between the platforms will not amount to 4 feet in width. The planks and laths of one of the ammunition stores on the bastions having rotted and the flat roof having consequently collapsed, the same along with the door frame needs to be renewed. The furnaces in the kitchens of the hospital and of the soldiers, having been entirely in pieces, have had to be renewed for the second and third time. The straw huts of the watch peons at nearly all the ghats are almost entirely ruined and require an essential renewal, as do likewise the straw huts of the gatekeeper of the Land Gate, chobdar, washermen, gardeners, and bearer of Your Esteemed Honor. The misfortune having befallen the undersigned, your Honors' most humble servant, that he, not with any deliberate intention to sin, but out of fear and the ignorance of youth, absented himself from the Company's service, weighing upon him ever more heavily, all the more so when considering the disgrace not only to his own person but also to his family, in view of the forthcoming summons that those who have deserted the said service must expect, causes him in all humility to turn back to your Honors' favor, with the humble request that the annual order in his regard might be mitigated, and that he, the petitioner, be granted a prolongation of time, so that he may at a suitable opportunity address their High Mightinesses in order to obtain forgiveness for the sin he committed. Doing which, below was written, in the margin: Bandel, the 25th of July, Anno 1768. 723 9 August Points of the reply to Cossimbazar: to write off a certain deficit of the same and to approve the retention of some [funds] Wherewith we hope to have complied with the honored intention of Your Right Honourable; so we have the honor to call ourselves with due respect, underneath stood: Right Honourable Sir, lower: Your Right Honourable's very humble and obedient servants, signed: M. Borwater, I. Reynard. In the margin: Hughli in Fort Gustavus the 19th of July Anno 1768. It was agreed to keep this memorandum thereof. Next, having proceeded to the resumption of the letter dated three days previously, received on the 27th of last month from the servants at the office mentioned in the margin, it was initially agreed to consider the requested writing off of the deficit found on the silver sent upcountry last from the ships Het Huis ten Donk and Vaillant to the amount of 5 ounces and 17 engels, as the sworn report drawn up thereof has been received back, and consequently the requisition of this council of the [blank] of the past month has been fulfilled. Successively received from the mint an amount of money from the coining of 260,000 rupees, and aside from the 240,000 sent thereof from this [place], since the cash balance in their treasury amounted to only 6002:19:8 guilders, a sum of 15,000 sicca rupees or 23,625:—:— guilders was retained by the servants, out of consideration for both the necessary disbursements in trade and the household expenditures. 724 9 August passed Points of the reply to Patna: matter of the omission in noting the premium 23,625:—:— guilders; it was agreed to approve this, and at the same time to pass the disbursements already made therefrom up to one third of the said sum for the purchase of raw mochta. Cash account of June: Upon the transmitted cash and expense account of the month of June, according to the declaration of the Honorable Head Administrator, nothing objectionable was found, and the demonstration of the cash expenditure drawn up therefrom, apart from the ordinary monthly charges according to the memorandum at 1798:11:8 guilders, being nothing other than entries that have already been before the view of the council, it was agreed to pass this as well. By a Patna letter of the 11th past, now also brought in, it being shown how the servants, in compliance with the requisition of this ministry by missive of 3 June prior, inquiring into the causes whereby the recording of the premium in the trade booklets of that office in the book year 1765/66 and thereafter was omitted, whereas that had nevertheless been in use before that time, had found this to be grounded 725 9 August to order the recording of the same again and decision to direct the servants to that effect to be grounded upon the express order of the late ordinary Councillor of the Indies and then Director Louis Taillefert of blessed memory and Council, by missive of 5 November 1760, whereby, because no soldier pay books were kept at their office anyway, it was ordered, just as at Cossimbazar, not to take in the premium but to leave such to the main office, with a request to be strengthened in this regard by the further pleasure of this ministry. Thus, although on the one hand it was found to be true what the servants alleged regarding the prohibition, yet on the other hand, since upon inspecting the Cossimbazar books of several book years it appeared that the aforesaid premium was recorded at the said office, it was considered that the late Mr. Taillefert had a mistaken notion of the matter, and perhaps an erroneous report was made in that regard, because in all cases it squares with the style of bookkeeping to account for the premium in the books of the place where the salaries are paid; and consequently 726 9 August Approval of the cash account of June ten extra peons notation of some difficulties concerning an apparent increase in cost of the repairs underway consequently resolved to order the servants to record the aforesaid premium, just as is customary at Cossimbazar, under the date of the last of August. Furthermore, it was agreed to pass the cash and expense account of the month of June, since the same, according to the testimony of the Honorable Head Administrator, contains nothing that could give reason to the contrary; being consequently also approved the hiring of ten extra peons to guard the lodge, which lay completely open at the back due to the demolition of the old buildings, and whereby the same were already entered for two months in the said cash account, the ordinary peons being, as the servants assure, employed in other services; and therefore the others were highly necessary to watch the workers everywhere, who for lack of supervision always played the sluggard and are kept to work with great difficulty. The remarks to be mentioned below Your Honour must also accurately take heed of to wit That the Linens must be of an equal weave that is to say 742 9 Augs. say that all the threads are equally fine, according to their sort, and evenly beaten, so that there must be no bands in them, which are caused either by the inequality of the threads, or because the piece is not everywhere equally beaten. The stripes of the Doreas, both striped and checked, must be very clearly distinguishable, which cannot be done except by the following to wit That the ground of the piece must be clearly and equally woven. The stripes must be of a coarser thread than the ground and they must be woven closely together, both in the thanna and the Bharna. The flowered Linens must all be cossidas, and not Chicon, and care must be taken that the embroidery is not pulled, for by that inconvenience holes appear at the edges of the embroidery, and cause such a piece to tear very easily upon washing. The boetidaars of whatever sort of linen it may be, the bouquets must neither be too large nor too small, and they must neither be further nor closer from each other than twice the length of the bouquet, and one must take care that the pieces of 40 Cobidos always have two pieces of the same design, and if the pieces are of 20 Cobidos there are always four pieces of the same design, but as much variation of designs in the parcel as will be practicable, and yearly as much as possible new designs. Of the checked doreas with flowers, half of the parcel must be with a small flower in every check and the other half skipping a check as follows. in every check a bouquet Skipping a check a bouquet in the other but Your Honour must be mindful that the doreas where a check is skipped cost much less than those where there is a bouquet in every check. The prices of all flowered linens are also regulated according to the quantity of flowers or bouquets that go into it. for Your Honour gives the piece of linen to the embroiderers with whom Your Honour agrees for every bouquet, if they are large bouquets, and if they are small bouquets or small flowers, Your Honour agrees by the hundred. With the flowered doreas both striped and checked it must also be observed that in the parcel there is much variation of designs, and that of 743 9 Augs. and that of the pieces of 40 Cobidos there are always two pieces of the same design, and of the pieces of 20 Cobidos always 4 pieces of the same design, wherefore in my opinion Your Honour will do well to have all the flowered linens made no longer than 20 Cobidos, for those of 40 Cobidos remain too long in the hands of the embroiderers, whereby the Linen becomes very unsightly, nay even half rotten, which Your Honour must also make known in the first Company letter and request our order regarding this.
