The resolution taken thereon. Bankruptcies, which ought to be prevented as far as possible so as not to expose oneself, through the failure of others, to damage and accountability, and therefore resolved, for as long as matters are of such a poor appearance as they currently are, not to adhere so strictly to the previous or old samples, but to make use of the prescribed rule by Extract of the Patriotic Missive of 17 October 1754, in case it is not feasible to sort by the samples at hand, to draw from the parcels of the best Merchant some pieces for samples and to carry out the sorting thereafter according to the intention and order of the Gentlemen Majores; which has also been commanded to the servants in the Cloth Hall; nevertheless under the condition of informing the Meeting beforehand and awaiting its order and disposition in this regard. Hereafter was read a written justification from the invoice clerk Johan Hendrik Hagha Damius against the compensation of 25 lb of shellac imposed upon him by resolution of the 26th ultimo, which was undercharged in the dispatch of a larger quantity in the spring of 1767; concerning which, however, the invoice clerk acted according to an attached written statement from the clerk in the trade warehouses, Jacob Johan Hubert, who informed him, as the note indicates, that there were to be shipped: with the Orangezaal, 14 chests of 3,150 lb and with the Jonge Samuel, also 14 chests of 3,150 lb in total, 6,300 lb net. 12 February 218. the orders and are not in conflict with those of the 23rd July and 19th October 1753 enacted regarding the keeping of the trade and pay books, and thus could remain in force in that manner, or indeed to what extent they ought to undergo any change; further, that the said examiner and bookkeeper-general, having also provided a report regarding the examination conducted by them into the statement of the account of the shortfall found in Sicca Rupees, likewise drawn up by the aforementioned Ross, Their Excellencies had made such dispositions on those writings as were noted in the margin thereof, sending over both at the same time, so that they might serve for information and compliance, it is, after the same have now again, on 12 February, been attentively reread and checked against the previous ones, approved and resolved to order the aforementioned trade bookkeeper to promptly execute and comply with the qualifications and orders contained therein. However, since among other things it is also ordered therein to make compensation for the 1348 lb of saltpetre charged to this directorship for the second time according to an extract from the general resolutions of Batavia Castle under date of 8 July 1757, which, according to 10 accompanying boat notes, were shipped short compared to what was charged in the invoice to the main settlement, and for which the compensation had already been imposed by a decision of the High Table under date of 8 July 1755, to an amount of ƒ 209.18.-, in so far as no clerical error might have been committed in that regard, as well as the charge imposed according to an extract from the general resolutions of Batavia Castle under date of 8 June 1757 of ƒ 186.-, or the cost of 6140 lb of rice and 762 pieces of long gunnies sent back from the ship Vosmaar, which departed for Batavia in the year 1756; it is remarked in that regard, following what was noted both in and beside a report submitted at the session of the 26th April 1763 by the then secretary Johan Gerard van Angelbeek, and firstly concerning the first entry, that the then invoice keeper Pieter Johan Ribaut had shown in a report at the session of the 30th September 1755 that it could not be verified whether it was a clerical error, because no copies of the aforementioned boat notes had arrived here, nor were minutes kept, and that it could also not be discovered whether any error had been made in this regard here. 295 4 March The delivered broadcloths and velvets were found to agree with the invoice, but in case no. 5 there are 4 pieces of green satin, all very stained, and one of them, no. 1378, which according to the invoice should have been 32 ells long, was found upon remeasuring to hold no more than 25¼ ells, and is torn at one end. The same is the case with a piece of crimson red moire with gold, no. 1348, which according to the reckoning should have held 37½ ells, but after remeasuring was found to be only 32 7/8 ells long, also being torn at one end; and on the gray paper surrounding it, it is stated that 5 ells of it were consumed. In cases no. 6 to 10 the mirrors were found to agree, except for the 2 mirrors of ¾ ell, which are noted on the invoice with brown frames and were found to be black. Small case no. 11 should have contained: 4 ounces of cinnamon oil, and was found to be only 2 ounces 3 drams 4 ounces of clove oil, ditto 2½ ounces -½ dram 4 ounces of mace oil, ditto 2 ounces - drams 4 ounces of sassafras oil, ditto 2½ ounces 1½ drams This underweight we believe to have been caused by the bad condition of the vials, all the necks of which were found damaged, and the corks cut so unevenly that the cloths with which they were wrapped, as well as the sawdust in which they were packed, were entirely permeated by the oils. Gustaf Bromberg, having, according to the aforesaid report, assisted in the inspection, measuring, and weighing of the goods brought under Lieutenant Carel Matthijs Willem de Lille on the last of December of the past year, which report having been read to them, they confirmed the contents thereof upon express inquiry made thereto with a solemn oath, and this whilst raising the first two fingers of their right hand and uttering these words: So truly help us God Almighty. And as it appeared thereby as well as from the letter that on the cloves 26 lb or 3/19 percent, on the nutmegs 37¾ lb or 1 percent shortage, on the cinnamon ½ lb or 1/32 percent, and on the pepper 34½ lb or 1 1/50 percent underweight was found, which the servants, assuming it to have been caused by drying out during the voyage, requested 298 4 March requested to be allowed to write off; it was, after deliberation hereupon, resolved to adhere to the stipulations in the general regulation reprinted on the 15th of August 1764, and consequently to allow the shortages discovered on the cinnamon and pepper to be written off entirely; but of the cloves and nutmegs, no more than half of what may be validated according to the second article of the said regulation, and thus ½ percent on the former and just as much on the latter kind of spices, and therefore to have the remaining 1/38 percent on the cloves and ½ percent on the nutmegs compensated by the storekeepers for the one half and the ordinary commissioner for the other half; but since 299 this must truly be attributed to drying out, it was at the same time decided not only to grant exemption thereof to the aforesaid persons, but also to request permission to be allowed to write off, on such and other goods subject to drying out—especially around the time of the year that the Patna fleets are ordinarily dispatched from here—at least as much as has been granted for that to the ship's commanders. Furthermore, to order the servants to lay the four pieces of satin—which, as appears from what is cited in the letter, were found to be very stained and unfit for a gift, and of which one was torn at the end and found to be only 32 ells long, thus 6¾ 300 ells too short—out to air in the sun, in order that, if the stains might disappear after drying, only the aforesaid lesser length, along with the 5 3/8 ells that were also found short on a piece of crimson red moire, be charged back hither and paid by the one to whom these goods were issued for use, and in which, according to the declaration of First Storekeeper Ross, an error was committed at shipment, to be claimed back; or else, if the said fabrics could not be remedied by airing, to authorize the servants to send the same back again, with a refund of the cost, for further disposition by

But the 6 ounces and 13 drachms of fine essential oil, which were found missing from a quantity of 16 ounces and, as the servants report, caused by the poor condition of the phials and corks, are to be compensated by the aforementioned Warehouse Masters and the Ordinary Commissioner, each for one half, with orders to the servants to account for the amount thereof; and finally concerning the binding rattans, of which only 30 bundles were supposedly sent instead of 60, it is noted that this appears to be an error on the part of the commissioners, who must have taken 50 rattans for a bundle, whereas according to the books they contain only 25, and that according to this calculation the first number must come out correctly, 302. 4 March. since in accordance with the report made by Master of the Equippage van Braam to the Lord Director, 30 double and consequently 60 single bundles were sent.
