The following entries, which continue in the main Journal under the ultimate of August 1767, ought now to be written off in the Patna books of the year 1767/8, namely: For Medicaments entered twice in the books there for the years 1761/3 and 1763/4: 415.11.8 For a difference between the final balances of the year 1764/5 and the opening balances of the financial year 1765/6 in the said books, existing in the Account of tin, amounting to: 1.-.- A difference between the Hugli invoice of the 10th of October 1765 and the Patna books, entered in the Hugli Journal on pages 36 and 45 at: ƒ 17720.18.8 And entered in the Patna books of the year 1765/6 on page 21 at: 17720.19.8 Thus entered for more in those books: -.1.- The excess entered on sent seals, being in the Hugli Journal on page 94: ƒ 82.-.- And entered in that of Patna according to the charged account on page 80 at: 82.6.4 Thus entered for more in the Patna books: 6.4 By resolution of the 20th of March 1767 it was agreed to have these differences corrected in the Patna books, which, however, as it appears, has not been carried out. For expenses incurred in the months of December 1766 and February 1767 in the collection of opium, which were charged hither in the Patna invoice of the 4th of March of the past year and entered in the Hugli Journal of the year 1766/7 on page 65; and since the employees there have not written off the same in their books, but have erroneously allowed them to continue under the remainder of the opium, this amount ought to be written off in this year's Patna books to the Bengal office at: 982.2.- Lapses due to the proposition noted in the margin. In the Patna Journal of the year 1766/7 on page 60, this main office was credited for interest that, according to the employees' supposition, had supposedly been overpaid here on 2 bonds discharged to Randolf Merriol: 74.10.- Pursuant to the Council's resolution of the 25th of August of the past year, this amount was credited to the Patna office by invoice of account dated 25 January last, and is therefore to be rectified in their books of this year. 1 For a calculation error in the Patna invoice of the 10th of December 1765, where in the packing of 3 packages of liquorice there was counted: ƒ 61.10.- And the same actually counts: 62.10.- Thus charged hither for more by: 1.-.- This 1 guilder, as... to be accounted for, no longer to be redressed, to be compensated by... Which difference likewise ought to be corrected in the current Patna books: 425.12.12 Total: ƒ 1483.4.12 9.-.- 10 In the 406 18 March The former: ƒ 4085.4.- Whereby that entry was placed to expenses, to return a rectified received invoice to the employees in order that the said sum be credited to the Bengal office, from which the margin... To carry this into effect as yet. To have this entry dealt with also according to the proposal, under reprimand for the one who here neglected his duty. On the contrary, the following entries ought to be taken up in the aforementioned books: For compensation of excess written-off saltpetre charged to the former Patna chief Mr. Lafont: 4085.4.- How the Patna employees could have booked this entry in their new books we cannot verify, because no extracts from their Journal of the year 1767/8 have been received here; however, from the accounting rendered by that office in the invoice of the 24th of January last, it appears that an erroneous treatment concerning it took place, since the said amount was charged by them to this main office instead of having been credited to it. A difference between the Patna invoice and books in the year 1763/4, already accounted for, yet not taken up: 1.-.- The difference in an invoice of leaf silver, having been entered for too little in the Patna books by: -.8.- Diverse differences in the bills of exchange paid here in the year 1762/5: 31.9.8 The excess paid on a bill of exchange to Joegeldas in the month of April 1766, which was discharged here with 2½ per cent agio at: ƒ 9087.1.8 And in the Patna Journal on page 77 erroneously booked with only 2 per cent agio, amounting to: 9042.15.8 Thus entered for more in the said books: 44.6.- 4170.16.- Concerning these above-mentioned entries, it was approved by resolution of the 20th of March of the past year to have them taken up in the Patna books, which however, for lack of accounting by the employees there, has not been executed. For 1 entry accounted for in the Hugli Journal of the 6th of December 1766 for compensation of nagulen, charged to the outgoing chief C:s Rietveld, booked in the Hugli Journal on page 39 and not taken up in the Patna books: ƒ 2002.14.8 According to the resolution of the 9th of February last, these ƒ 2002.14.8 must be placed onto the salary account of the said chief, and the same, after having first been taken up, ought thus to be charged hither and written off in the current Patna books. A few persons have fallen further behind on their pay accounts than their half wages amount to, which, however, was solely caused by the provision of uniforms and wages consumed in the hospital, it having thus not appeared to us that any improper disbursement or one contrary to orders was made by the pay bookkeeper. At the Cassembazaar Office, namely in the month of August last, there was disbursed in wages to the Assistant Adolf Assenberg f 9.-.- and to the soldier Sebastiaenser f 24.-.- more than was due to them, which amount, however, has already been accounted for by them in this financial year. With regard to the estates that have come under the pay bookkeeper as curator ad lites, we have found that they were handled properly. 19 March the Pay Bookkeeper Which difference arose from the following, namely: [illegible] the same in the Journal of the year 1760 was not written off 161.5.- trade books as: At the Cassembazaar office for too much premium on the allowance of the qualified persons At the Houglij office, namely: for two half-cures that were paid out of cash in the month of August of the past year, amounting with the premium to f 27.8.8 These 2 half-cures have been properly debited in the pay books in this book-year 1767/8. Item the less credited in the Houglij trade books on account of 14 1/2 percent premium on the f 9.12.8 counted back into cash mentioned above: f 1.7.8 which amount, according to the proposal of this book-year, should be taken into the trade books at the expense of prior-year profits and losses. The greater amount debited in the Houglij Trade Books amounts to: f 45.6.- from which is deducted the lesser amount taken in by the aforementioned books on account of what was paid to the Almoners, Hubert and Roghe, for the amount of an original pay account of the deceased soldier Pieter Vernieuw, found in the collection for the poor, upon which he held a credit: f 3.-.- This account was only paid out of cash in the month of September 1767 and is thus to be taken into the new books. 632. 19 March appeared as an illusion to, in time, directly contrary to the sentiment of this Ministry, assume nothing that is inappropriate in the service of the Company; whereas at present one ought only to be intent upon means by which one knew how to keep a frugal household and bring profit to one's masters. That this was the true purpose of the resolution to once again make a trial of the trade in Dhakka, and that His Right Honourable therefore believed that, in order to achieve the same, a change should be made regarding the person who was henceforth to remain there, presupposing that Lankheet did not possess enough insight to advance the true interest of the Company, and the Lord Director had rather allowed his choice to fall 433 19 March In his place the Junior Merchant Ian Rauwertz is sent thither to fall upon the junior merchant and second Warehouse Keeper in loco Ian Rauwertz, as being known as a man of good management, frugal housekeeping, and proper conduct, accordingly proposing the same to keep house at Dhakka instead of the aforesaid Lankheet, to perform under the title of Factor the commissions that shall be demanded of him; so it was, since the assembly was entirely of the opinion of the Lord Director, approved and resolved to conform with the proposal of His Right Honourable, as well as to let the said Rauwertz depart thither as soon as practicable, and Lankheet, 434 19 March The warehouses administered by the Merchant Ross alone after making the transfer, to summon hither, because, contrary to his opinion, it is believed that the Factor will indeed be able to manage alone whatever business shall occur, and in any case, in the event of illness or otherwise, it is always time enough to consider someone who, as Lankheet writes, can keep an eye on the Company's property, principally consisting of the moneys put out on the delivery of linens, for which, besides that, the native Ramkent Haldaar, functioning as broker, remains responsible. And whereas by this arrangement the post of second Warehouse Keeper has become vacant, the Lord Director made it known 435 that there were presently enough junior merchants on hand, to one of whom, according to the orders, the same ought to be assigned, but that since it was yet to be seen whether the arrangement of this assembly would meet with the approval of the Honourable Supreme Government of the Indies, and moreover one had as yet no certainty whether the project would indeed meet with success, His Right Honourable for his part was of the opinion to leave that post open until further orders from Their High Mightinesses, and to leave the administration of the warehouses for that period to the First Warehouse Keeper Johannes Matthias Ross; with which the members likewise concurred; 436 while at the same time it was resolved to record that the said Ross has taken upon himself the responsibility for this administration, without finding it necessary that, besides the inventory of the last of February with which they are still occupied, a separate inventory and transfer should take place.
