25 IB. /. The 29th February Anno 1768. The proposal to remit one year's salary to the Gamron Lodge keeper, and to appoint his son Huijbert Buskens as his successor, was unanimously approved. In conclusion of this business, the Director further proposed to the assembly: That whereas navigation to the Persian Gulf was opening again, and in the past month of December the annual salary of the Gamron Lodge keeper, David Busken, had already expired, whether one, pursuant to the Resolution of the 19th November last, should now remit the amount of his wages up to the last of August, or rather, since today a good and secure opportunity had been obtained through the channel of the English Chief, Mr. Price, remit to him for a full year calculated from the 1st January to the last of December of this year, being Rops 396:—; and in the meantime, in order to obey the revered orders of Their High Mightinesses to take care, in the event that something human should befall the said Buskens, to have another succeed in his place, to name and appoint his eldest son, Huijbert Buskens, who is also there on the spot, as his successor. Which proposal of His Honour, being deemed very good by all the members, it was resolved to remit to the said David Buskens the aforementioned amount of Rops 396:— on the occasion of the English ship of Mr. Price, named The Experiment, being about to depart for Bassoura, and at the same time to inform him that his eldest son, Huijbert Buskens, has been appointed as his successor as Lodge keeper at Gamron on the same conditions and the same salary in the event he should happen to pass away, and to give notice of current news as it occurs. Below stood: Thus done, resolved, and decreed in the Dutch Trading Post at Souratta on the day, month, and year aforesaid. The solemn inauguration of His Highness the Lord Prince of Orange as Supreme Governor-General of India occurring today, the Director opened the meeting with a short but fitting address. All present. Since this day, as appears from what was resolved in the session of the 19th November past, has been appointed for the solemn inauguration of His Serene Highness the Lord Prince of Orange and Nassau as Supreme Governor-General and General Commander-in-Chief of the entire East India Company; so the Director, after the customary prayer was offered by the Secretary, opened the meeting by making known to the members in a fitting address for what purpose His Honour had convened them together, since it had pleased Their High Mightinesses, by Circular Missive of the 19th December Anno 1766, to order that the highest-mentioned His Serene Highness should, in that prescribed high office of Supreme Governor-General, be publicly introduced to the people in the most solemn manner and accompanied with all possible lustre, with the publication of the Patent received alongside it, and the Oath of Loyalty and Obedience be taken by everyone to His High Princely Serene Highness in that eminent character. Wherefore His Honour seriously admonished each of the members to listen to the reading of the aforementioned Patent and the Form of the Oath received alongside it. Both being read out by the Secretary by order of His Honour, first the Director took the Oath of Loyalty and Obedience to His High Princely Serene Highness in the aforesaid high office of Supreme Governor-General and General Commander-in-Chief of all Dutch India into the hands of the Second and Head Administrator before the full assembly, and subsequently all the members, head by head, into the hands of the Director. After this ceremony was completed, the skipper of the ship 'T Veldhoen lying in the roads, Hendrik Mulder, together with the Head of the Militia, were summoned inside, to whom, after an address by the Director fitting for this occasion, the aforementioned documents were likewise read by the Secretary, after which they also took the oath into the hands of His Honour. 56. March Anno 1768. The 8th While the declaration of the Company's brokers was admitted instead of the oath. The persons specified in the text, upon their urgent request, had also been informed of the reason for their convocation, and thus to that end, by order of his Honour, the aforementioned papers were clearly read out to them word for word, the oath was taken by them, each individually, into the hands of the Lord Director. After this, the Company's brokers were also called inside, and it being made known to them by his Honour for what purpose they had been summoned here, they declared that they would always acknowledge, respect, and obey His Serene Highness the Lord Prince of Orange and Nassau as Supreme Governor-General and General Commander-in-Chief of the entire East India Company in that high dignity, which declaration was accepted in place of the oath. Subsequently, the Lord Director informed the Assembly that several petitioners had come forward and very urgently requested of his Honour that, on the occasion of this joyful and solemn day, as well as to serve them as a perpetual memorial thereof, an improvement in their rank and salary might be graciously granted to them; namely: The absolute assistant and sworn clerk at the Secretariat, Willem Bysenhardt, and The assistant Egbert Nicolaas Weardi, to be bookkeepers. The junior assistants: Hendrik Spierejee, Johannes Petrus Struksberg, Johannes 253 pt. The 8th March Anno 1768. And on the occasion of this solemn day improved in rank and salary. What was further observed with regard to this solemn day. Johannes Josephus Adam, and Fredrik Luther, to be absolute assistants; as well as the quartermaster and commander of the vessel de Verwagting, Ian Schoubart, to be boatswain's mate; so it was approved and agreed, by virtue of their humble request made, and in regard to this splendid inauguration day, also because four of the applicants have already completed their term of service, and the two others have only a short time left to serve on their contract, to grant their request, and therefore to promote the first two to bookkeepers with the salary of f 30: —: — per month under a new contract of three years; the four following them to absolute assistants, each with the salary of f 24: —: — per month, and under a new contract of five years; and the last to boatswain's mate, increasing his salary to f 20: —: — under a new contract of three years. After these distinguished proceedings were concluded, the Lord Commander proceeded collegially with the members of the Political Council from the meeting hall to the balcony or the place of inauguration, which was expressly prepared for that public ceremony, and which was performed there in such a solemn manner as is recorded at large in the Daily Register under today's date. March Anno 1768. The 29th The specification of the newly built narrow-ship De Verwagting resumed. De Batavier being compared. it was unanimously resolved to permit the said factor to do so. Furthermore, the Director presented the specification submitted by the Chief Mate and Equipage Overseer Pleun van der Kuijl of the newly built narrow-ship De Verwagting, amounting to 18115 23/60 Rupees or 27173:13:8 guilders, namely in cash 14832 1/6 Rupees or 22248:5:- guilders, and from inventory 3283 3/60 Rupees or 4925:8:8 guilders. Of which the bare hull, together with a boat, according to the contract made with the Company's modi, amounts to 12000:- Rupees or 18000:- guilders, alongside the expenses incurred in cash for the purchase and manufacturing of various necessary requirements which were not in the Company's inventory and are clearly set forth in the said account, amounting to 2832 1/6 Rupees or 4248:5:- guilders. And thus the total cost of the said vessel, which is 73½ feet long stem to stern, 21½ wide at its waterline, and 10½ feet deep to the keelson, turned out not to be excessive, but on the contrary reasonably frugal. No 2 29 And while it appeared from this that De Verwagting, in comparison to De Chinsura, is 7 feet longer stem to stern, 1¼ wider at its waterline, and 1½ feet deeper to the keelson, yet costs 634:2:8 guilders less; as well as, compared to De Batavier, is 6 feet longer, 2¼ wider, and 1¼ feet deeper, and results in a lower cost of 920:11:8 guilders; so it was, in consideration of the great difference that according to this statement exists between the said vessels, and because the general cost of the narrow-ship De Verwagting cannot at all be considered too high, especially since the cost of the Vlieger, which the Equipage Overseer according to the resolution of 24 March of the past year must count into the treasury at 6270 9/60 Rupees or 9405:9:8 guilders, being deducted from the entire amount, this vessel will actually cost the Honourable Company no more than 11845 7/15 Rupees or 17768:4:- guilders, deemed good and resolved to approve the aforementioned specification and to insert it here in this place. Specification of the cost in cash and what was supplied from the Honourable Company's inventory for the building and outfitting of the narrow-ship named De Verwagting, length of keel 60¼, stem to stern 73½, width at the waterline 21, and depth in the hold 10½ feet, together with its boat; namely: In Cash Paid for the construction of the bare hull, together with the boat, according to the contract made with the Honourable Company's modi Mannik Pada: 12000:- Rupees. The following expended by the undersigned Equipage Overseer in outfitting as well as otherwise; to be: 21½ pieces of Oudania wood for the making of a top-sail and topgallant mast, the stocking of two kedge anchors, cap pieces on the mast and bowsprit, as well as for the making of all kinds of blocks, mast partners, beakhead, double bulkhead in the cabin, to be carried forward.

It having appeared from a submitted report of the Equipment Overseer and Special Commissioners that an anchor stock beam from the warehouse, which was to be employed for the making of an anchor stock for the ship Landskroon, after it had been hewn, was found upon sawing through to be rotten and split inside, as well as unserviceable for any further duties, it was resolved to have the aforementioned anchor stock beam written off in the trade books and further to have it destroyed, as well as to incorporate this report herein. The undersigned Secunde, having examined with all attention the Formal Demand for Merchandise etc. for this Office, finds himself obliged, with respect to the powdered sugar demanded by the Honorable Director, with which he, the Secunde, cannot at all agree, to respectfully make this note. That, still persisting in his remarks on the provisional demand, and referring thereto in all humility just as if these were incorporated herein, he is of the opinion that more than too much powdered sugar will be on hand here for the year 1769, if the arriving ships bring only four thousand cannassers and no more, as the Secunde considers one ought to request, instead of ten thousand cannassers, reasoned as follows: That here in the warehouses, as of the ultimate of March, remain in balance: 6000 cannassers. And the entire new parcel, after deduction of all charges: 7300. Thus together: 13300 cannassers. That of this, before the ships arrive in October or November, no more will be fetched than: 3300. And this because the bad monsoon is at hand, and one must presume that the outer places are already all provided with sugar. Thus there remains in balance for Anno 1769: 10000 cannassers. And added thereto the amount demanded by the Honorable Director: 10000. Thus there would be a stock of: 20000.
