And as you yourselves are pleased to say that by your books 36 months' house rent is discounted at 80 rup. per month, whereas she, on the contrary, only spoke of 40 rupees per month, we may not omit, upon her special request, mentioning for your elucidation: that it is true Mr. Douglas in the beginning did promise Ro. 80, but afterwards, for the sake of some discontentment, he declared he would not give more than 40 rupees; and this is the reason why she thought best by her former application only to demand 40 rupees, on the supposition that no more was brought to the charge of the Honourable English Company. But as it now appears by the books to the contrary, and especially that 80 rupees are discounted, she, for this reason, cannot omit submitting to your consideration whether equitably she has not a right to 80 rupees per month and thus rup. 2160 instead of the mentioned Ro. 1080, so much the more as she truly and in all sincerity can assure that she never received anything from the first 10 months, while her husband, to whom 80 rup. per month were promised, chose not to receive forty, but rather preferred to address himself to Bombay, as really was done at that time, but to which no answer was received, which is also the reason that the house rent of these ten months was neither paid. However, she defers this consideration—whether further might be paid to her than her first demand—to the generosity of the Gentlemen your Superiors at Bombay, and, in the hope that this her other request shall meet with a favourable acceptance and that she shall not be left uncomforted in the pitiful state of life she labours under as a poor widow with children, she only takes the liberty regarding this affair of recommending herself once more to the powerful favour of the said Gentlemen. But in case those receipts cannot be found, she most respectfully implores the favor of your Honors and of the gentlemen, your Honors' superiors in Bombaij, to kindly assist her, so that her claim of ro/a 1080:- may yet be satisfied by the one who reported that amount as disbursed, but did not pay it to her. And whereas your Honors yourselves are pleased to say that according to their books for 36 months at ro/a 80:- per month was written off, whereas she, on the contrary, spoke only of ro/a 40:- per month; we cannot refrain, at her instance, for elucidation thereof, to add hereto: That it is true that Mr. Douglas at first essentially had promised ro/a 80:-; but that afterwards, by reason of some conceived displeasure, he had declared that he would give no more than ro/a 40:-; and that this is the reason why she thought it best, in her previous petition, to claim no more than ro/a 40:-, on the supposition that the Honorable English Company certainly would not have been billed for more either; but since the books now show the contrary, and indeed ro/a 80:- was written off therein, she cannot fail on that ground to submit for your Honors' consideration whether she might not also fairly be entitled to ro/a 80:- per month, and thus ro/a 2160:- instead of the aforementioned ro/a 1080:-; all the more so since she can assure in all sincerity that she did not even receive anything of the amount for the first 10 months, for the reason that her husband, while ro/a 80:- had been promised to him, would not accept ro/a 40:- per month, but wished rather to address himself on that account to Bombaij, as also took place at that time, but received no reply thereto, and on that ground the payment for those 10 months likewise remained unpaid. Upon this discovery, they had emptied from the aforementioned parcel the tenth chest that was found to differ the most, or in total 9 chests of nutmegs with cloves, which according to the invoice from the main factory should have weighed 1004 lb, and here weighed a full 1027 lb. Thus an overweight of 23½ lb, or 2 3/8 per cent. Next, in the aforementioned manner, cloves were likewise brought to the scale gross, which weighed at Batavia gross lb 19481:—. And here delivered no more than 19160½:—, or in gross underweight gross lb 320½, over 1 3/8 per cent. Then, since the gross weight of these cloves found here likewise differed considerably to the disadvantage from what was invoiced, they had emptied from this parcel the tenth of the lightest chests, or in total 13 chests of cloves, which according to the Batavian memorandum should have weighed net lb 1202:—; and were found here net lb 1252:¼, or more than invoiced net lb 50¼, over 4 1/8 per cent, being 131 chests, and 8118.
