aforesaid 625. pa/o which still had to be brought up in arrears of lease monies, and for the satisfaction of which sepeermaal has been cited before the Council of Justice, and on that account the present receiver David Vick has been ordered to take the necessary care for the collection of those monies, as well as of a small sum of Pa/o 25: 2: 20: which sepeermaal said he still had to account for in lease monies, and by virtue of this the receiver, alongside the other claimants on Wienaijgom's estate, presented himself to the court here, thus it was understood, upon those monies coming in and sepeermaal being in no arrears to the lease, to have the same received to the benefit of the estate of Haselkamp for the debt of Wienaijgom to him. During the investigation of the said commissioners, having been questioned by the commissioners, two notes were submitted alongside the report by the leaseholders Moeniappa poele and oetandiappa Moddeliaar, to demonstrate what they had successively delivered in cash on account of collected tolls from the persons mentioned therein to Haselkamp, with the request that the amounts stated therein, one being from Moeniappa Poele in the amount of Pard:s 1274: 2: 68:, and the second from betandiappa moddeliaar P/o 64: may be credited in their favor, on which account, both from the responses given by Haselkamp to the interrogatories put to him concerning this affair, and the attestation provided by Hoflager, it could not be ascertained whether the monies mentioned in the said note, either in part or in whole, were included in the Ra/o 3652:19:30: for lease monies stated and counted in the cash-office by the ordinance of the last of August 1763 or not, because Hoflager says that indeed some monies, which were in Haselkamp's custody, were brought up with it, without however being able to specify whether they originated from the auctioned goods of Noeniappa poele, nor to state the size of the collected sum, all of which being demonstrated and argued very amply and circumstantially in the aforesaid report, it was therefore, after mature consideration, unanimously understood regarding the notes produced by the said Moeniappa Poele, to leave that of pard:t 1081: 2: 28: to his account, to be accounted for by him as yet, since he has not been able to show, nor has it in any other way been verified, that those funds were paid to Haselkamp; but on the other hand, to have credited in his favor and to the debit of Haselkamp, the Pard:s 192:—. 40: mentioned in a second note, which he has proven through the production of receipts, showing that this amount was collected and received by Haselkamp, to whose debit it was furthermore resolved to charge the amount of 67/ 64. received by him to the benefit of the fellow leaseholder betandiappa moddeliaar according to issued receipts; whereas the responses given by the repeatedly mentioned Haselkamp to the questions put to him concerning this affair were found by the meeting not to be of such value as to overthrow and annul all good order which he was obliged to observe and comply with, not only as cashier, but also as vendue master, namely to receive no monies in the cash-office, nor to disburse any from it, without ordinances, and also not to deliver any auction monies to private individuals without first providing himself with receipts, or by having them duly granted, to protect himself against all claims and demands, and therefore the curators in the estate of the said Haselkamp are ordered to draw up and submit an amended statement of accounts as soon as possible, so that the proceedings initiated against the said Haselkamp regarding his unfaithful and negligent conduct, and whatever else pertains thereto, may finally be brought to an end. It was furthermore approved to deliver the notes handed over by the absconded Governor van Teijlingen to the present Right Honorable Governor, which accompanied the report of the aforesaid commissioners, indicating the persons who are in arrears to the lease, to the first clerk Leonard Campie, with orders to collect the same from the persons who are recorded therein and are obligated to still contribute to the lease, and to accomplish this within the period of one month; as well as to submit a report in writing of his actions, with a list of those who are unwilling to pay. It having also been made known to this government by the said commissioners regarding the claim formulated by the leaseholder williapoele against the named haselkamp, likewise arising from the monies collected by the latter for the account of that leaseholder from various persons, to the amount of new Nagap:lo p/o 71. and 76: pard:s 6. p:s and 21. p:s, it was understood, since the same are destitute of all proof, to dismiss that claim, without diminishing however his recourse against the estate of the said Haselkamp. It was furthermore reported by the said commissioners.

it being reported that upon examining this matter it had appeared to them that various errors had crept in between the accounts of the renters and the statement of the receiver Hoflager, demonstrating this further by a document drawn up by them concerning it from the year 1762 to 1764/5, according to which the renters paid more in cash to the receiver Hoflager than he paid into the cash desk, except in the year 1762, in which the renters being in default or in arrears for pa/o 3029: 21: 40, the receiver paid 1874 pa/o more than was handed to him, as well as under ultimo February 1763 P/o 1155, in order thereby to even out the entire arrears of 1762, which was easy to verify, since the cash book of 1762 was not closed until anno 1763, thus he liquidated those of anno 1762 with the rent monies of 1762/3, serving as proof 451 proof thereof that for the year 1762/3 he furnished no more than pa/o 3085: 18: 30 into the cash desk, whereas a sum of Pa/o 6395: 13: 60 was handed to him by the renters collectively, thus in that year he paid Pa/o 3309: 19: 30 less into the cash desk than was received by him; and although it is true that the receiver Hoflager could allege having been in advance for the renters in anno 1762 for pa/o 3029: 21: 40, it nevertheless appears that when this aforesaid amount is deducted from the rent monies furnished by him in anno 1762/3 which were less by the sum of Pa/o 3309: 19: 30, he accounted for pa/o 279: 21: 70 less than ought to have occurred. Extract Resolution taken in the Council of Coromandel on 6 September 1763, whereby it is decided to answer the said rejoinder by a surrejoinder, and furthermore, with respect to the 135,450 lb of cotton that had become spoiled, for which previously 27,083 guilders, 19 stuivers had been claimed with a 25 percent advance, to rest content with its purchase price of 17,714 guilders, and also to have validated from the debt of the merchants that which amounts to his portion in the 1,700 pagodas already laid down, and thus of the initially claimed 28,231 guilders, 5 stuivers, 8 penningen only to claim 1,243 guilders in namptisation, but against this to claim anew 663 and three-quarter rupees on account of auction money of the sold goods of the interpreter and examiner at Bimilipatnam, which were indeed received by Hagemeister, but have not yet been entered into the books. Subsequently, the Governor stated that whereas the testamentary executors of the late junior merchant and former second of the office of Bimilipatnam, Carel Lodewijk Hagemeister, who passed away at Vepery, being Mr. John Calland and the missionary Johan Philip Fabricius, in response to the request made from here to the last-mentioned by letters dated 27 October last, to surrender under proper receipt everything vacated and left behind by the death of the said Hagemeister to the heads at Pulicat, because the Honorable Company still had some outstanding matters with him, had by their letter of the 4th instant indicated that they were inclined to satisfy any lawful claim, but had on the other hand refused to send here the will of the aforesaid Hagemeister, as requested from here, the contents of which nevertheless necessarily needed and ought to be known; it was therefore utterly necessary that recourse be taken in this matter to the English Governor and Council at Madraspatnam, under whose government and jurisdiction those two persons belong, with a very friendly request for their assistance, to the end that the said executors may be ordered, or in case of unwillingness compelled, to dispatch the last will here as soon as possible, and also to surrender the left-behind cash and effects of the oft-mentioned Hagemeister to the Pulicat heads, under representation that the Honorable Company has a lawful claim thereto, since the same had not yet rendered account regarding his administration held at the office of Bimilipatnam. 485 Bimilipatnam, which, having also been thus understood by the members, was subsequently resolved to be carried out accordingly. The chiefs of Palliacatta having given notice hither by letter of the 4th current, how the authorized clerk of that factory, Bartholomeus Fruester, upon the orders from here, had proceeded to Madraspatnam, and on the recommendation of the English Governor Pigot concerning the Company's claim made on the estate and the will of the deceased Bimilipatnam second Carel Lodewijk Hagemeester, had consulted with the English advocate Archidale Palmer, and subsequently with him had addressed the president of the Court or Board of Justice, requesting His Honour that the executors of the said Hagemeester might Extract from the resolution taken in the Council of Coromandel at Nagapatnam. be persuaded to hand over the said estate and will; that the aforesaid president had said in response that the aforementioned will had been approved and admitted by them and sworn to by the executors, wherefore they could not satisfy that request; but as for the debts of which a memorandum had been sent from here, that if the proofs thereof were found complete, they would not fail in the administration of justice, etcetera; however, when the said Fruester appeared before the Court and indicated the debts or rather the claim, renewing the request made previously, the same was again refused and he was informed that the legal course stood open, and the parties, if he so required, could be summoned, and upon the lodging of their interests the matter would be dealt with according to the style of the court; of which, as well as of what was said by Governor Pigot, a certain Dupre, and the secretary of Madraspatnam, namely that this affair would necessitate him, Fruester, to remain there 499 for half a year etcetera, report had been made by him to Chief Dormieux, who thereupon had recalled him to Palliacatta and requested orders from here; having taken into consideration hereupon that although according to the above quoted, the English administration along with the court there, and especially the executors of the aforesaid Hagemeister, did not appear inclined to relinquish his estate, much less his executed will, one is nevertheless obliged to look after the interest of the Honourable Company to the utmost; it was thus upon a round of voting approved and agreed to order the chiefs of Palliacatta to send the aforementioned Fruester with the above-mentioned memorandum sent from here back to Madraspatnam, and while further demonstrating the lawfulness of the Company's claim through the advocate Archidale Palmer, to initiate a formal lawsuit against the often-named testamentary executors of Hagemeister's estate before the Court or Board of Justice, and to make a prompt report hither of its outcome. The clerk of this factory, having been dispatched by us to Madraspatnam pursuant to the highly honoured command of Your Honourable Worships in the honoured letter of 26 January 1762, returned from there the day before yesterday and has reported to us concerning his commission in this manner: that after his arrival at that English place he had himself announced to the Right Honourable Governor Pigot; his said Honour had him answered by one of his servants that if he were sent thither concerning the affair of the deceased junior merchant Hagemeister, he could then address a Mr. Dupre. He had thereupon proceeded to the said Mr. Dupre and obtained from him, for the purpose of presenting Your Honourable Worships' highly honoured letter to the administration there, to be introduced to the aforementioned Governor; this having been accomplished, the Right Honourable Governor Pigot had advised him to consult with a certain advocate Archidale Palmer concerning the claim of the Honourable Company, and through him to have the request of Your Honourable Worships presented to the Court or Board of Justice; having previously had the purpose of his coming and the contents of the memorandum in question registered by the registrar, he proceeded with the said advocate to the president of the Court, requesting His Honour on behalf of Your Honourable Worships that the executors of the deceased junior merchant Hagemeister might be persuaded to hand over the estate and the executed will; hereupon the said president had replied to him that the aforementioned will had been approved and admitted by him and had been sworn to by the executors; that therefore they could not comply with such a request, but as for all the debts mentioned in the memorandum

John Calland van Madras, Koopman beijde Executeuren inden boedel van den overleeden Charles Louis Hagemeister, on„ langs onder Coopman in dienst van de oostindische Compagnie en Tweede van Bimilipatnam, eene bezitting van voorm: oostindische Comp: staat schuldig aan uwe Redenaars of reekening van ge zegden boedel voor de somma van der„ thien thien duijsend twee hondert en sestig pagoosen, maaken in sterling geld van groot brittanje, teegens agt schellingen voor ieder pagood, de somma van vijf duijzend Drie hondert vier pon„ den, of daar omtrent als beter zal blijken „eener Reekening ter besigtiging met de overwijsing„ van den welEdelen raas hier annex. en welke uwe Redenaars ver„ zoeken g'admitteerd te worden als eene gedeelte van deeze uwe Redenaars brief klagt.
