From Palembang the 5th of July 1769. subjects, taken from the aforementioned Limpko's plundered junk, carried to Bangka, had come into the hands of the crown prince here in Palembang, so that I dared to assure myself very well that these rumors, confirmed to Their High Noble Lordships, were not so easy to deny. Whereupon His Highness, as if in passing, asked his councilors of state whether they also knew anything of the aforementioned case or of gold, or had also heard anything of his vessels. To which question some of the foremost said they had heard of nothing, whereupon we requested His Highness to point out the crown prince to us. Which having done, I took the liberty of addressing him fairly sharply and bringing to his attention that to deny such an all too well-known matter could not but give disadvantageous consequences and impressions of his person to Their High Noble Lordships. Whereupon His Noble, without addressing us, said to the king that he knew nothing of it and had heard neither of the junk nor of gold, saying he could not understand where such rumors came from. I answered the king that the matters would undoubtedly be further proven, and whether the king had then also heard nothing of the incident that Sayyid Seroes had had with his little fleet; yet he said he had heard nothing of it. Whereupon we answered His Highness that there were completely different rumors regarding that in Batavia, and it was very strange to me that those 17. From Palembang the 5th of July 1769. would all conflict with the truth. Whereupon His Highness was pleased to tell me that Their High Noble Lordships were possibly also ill-informed, and that Sayyid Idrus had arrived on Bangka completely unexpectedly and had ruined a place there named Bangka Cobak, and after he had murdered the people there for the most part, he also made himself master of the tin warehouse, having needed 7 vessels to load an amount of about 5000 picols of tin, after which he departed for Mempawah / situated not far from Timor /, and having just arrived there, he learned that a Palembang vessel had come before the mouth of the Mempawah river due to adversity, whereupon he immediately went out, overpowered the same as well, and murdered the crew, after which he returned again to Mempawah, where he now, in the king's opinion, still resides. After which we spoke further about the long delay of the vessels laden with pepper and tin, the king saying that they, already provided with passes, had departed about two months ago, not knowing what was lacking that they had not yet arrived, asking whether we had not encountered the same on our voyage hither; which one had to answer in the negative. However, submitting to His Highness that we did not doubt the dispatch of the aforementioned pepper and tin vessels about two months ago, but that we had also already been informed that those vessels, in a dilatory manner, about a month after obtaining their passes, 1 From Palembang the 5th of July 1769. had sailed out of the river one before the other, and that such a late dispatch could not accord with the contracts of dispatch concluded between the Honorable Company and the king. To this the king offered in reply that he had been afraid that his vessels might sometimes be attacked and ruined by an insolent cruiser, referring thereby to the Huijs ten Donk. Wherefore I said to the king that the persons who had taken such a wrong course had largely escaped their well-deserved punishment through their intervening death, and that the Honorable Company always had it for a constant rule to reward the good and to punish the evil, and I requested the king, in order to prevent in the future both noticeable disadvantage to the Honorable Company and to the king's own advantage itself, to dispatch the vessels at the proper time in the future. Which His Highness answered with his consent, whereupon I presented that, following the aforementioned behavior and according to Their High Noble Lordships' missive, I also found myself obliged to ask the prince categorically whether, yes or no, he was inclined to fully maintain the contracts entered into with the Honorable Company. From Palembang, the 5th of July 1769. to be willing to warn him in a timely manner, which the prince answered with a humble bow, thanking us for the good trust that we were pleased to place in him; after which, in accordance with the letter from Their High Excellencies, the king was asked how much pepper and tin was presently still in stock with His Highness, giving in reply that he indeed had an entire shipload of tin in stock, but that all the pepper had been sent to Batavia with his most recently departed vessels. We further asked whether there was then no pepper at all, to which His Highness said there was only very little. Asking for the quantity, His Highness promised to let me know tomorrow or the day after tomorrow; after having waited for more than five days, we sent the usual messenger to inquire, who told us on the king's behalf that about 500 picols could be delivered into the Honorable Company's warehouse, and that he would attend to delivering what arrives further from time to time. Presenting Their High Excellencies' very generous treatment concerning the seized junks, His Highness took very great pleasure in this benevolent disposition regarding them, the more so because they had been pleased to accept the tin for the benefit of the prince. Regarding the navigation to Siam and Cambodia, the prince promised us never to send any vessel thither without providing it with a pass from the first resident here, as From Palembang, the 5th of July 1769 as well as those that steer to Banca for tin, saying that this had also always been his custom; upon which assurance we proposed to the prince that not returning the old passes frequently caused abuses, and that a nakhoda with an expired pass was undoubtedly held suspected of illicit trade by the Company's cruisers, and that for this reason it was requested, in order to prevent all abuses henceforth, that His Highness would be pleased to give orders that the old passes, after new ones were issued, might return into the hands of the first undersigned; to which His Highness also finally agreed, but gave to understand that the people who lived on Banca itself could not come to me to obtain a pass first; whereupon His Highness proposed a means to nevertheless provide for this as much as possible, namely, that every nakhoda, from whatever place situated on Banca, arriving here could be asked how many and which vessels at the place whence he came intended to come hither, which was requested to be made known to us as well, in order then also henceforth to be able to instruct the cruising vessels, upon meeting or discovering such an inhabitant of Banca unprovided with a pass, to bring him to past the Sungsang, situated just in the mouth of this river; which proposal, as it appeared to us, he communicated in a foreign tongue to the crown prince From Palembang, the 5th of July 1769. crown prince and his grandees of the realm, after which the king replied that he would comply with the proposal as much as possible. Then, stepping away from this discourse, we gave His Highness to understand that his erected stone battery for 18 pieces of heavy cannon directly across from our lodge, without any prior notice thereof to the Company's resident, necessarily had to give Their High Excellencies much thought concerning the king's good intentions; to which the king replied that this battery had not been erected with any evil intention at all, and also was not directly, but rather diagonally across from the Company's lodge, and only put together at right angles, and could thereby not possibly damage the Company's lodge in any way, which we could investigate for ourselves; also that the same was not 6 but about 4 feet thick, and was only used to fire some shots whenever His Highness went down the river, or when one of his relations married. We requested the prince, in order to remove all suspicion, to demolish the battery; to which he replied that he had been obliged to construct this wall to be able to fire on the aforementioned occasions, and could find no other place for it, and that he therefore could not proceed to tear it down, the more so because he could not harm our lodge with it, and that we could rest assured that it was most pleasing to him to live in good peace and tranquility with the Honorable Company. After which, breaking off this discourse, we recommended ourselves to the king's attention, who, together with the crown prince, promised to From Palembang, the 5th of July 1769. to be willing to live in all amity, and wished us happiness and prosperity in our residency, after which nothing more of importance occurred, and after consuming some refreshments we took our leave with the ordinary ceremonies, being accompanied, contrary to their custom, by the king's emissaries back across the river into the lodge and into the dwelling of the resident. For the rest, we can assure Their High Excellencies that upon our arrival, no less than today, we have not been able to perceive the slightest evil designs on the part of the prince, everything here being in complete and amicable tranquility. Having treated these matters between the Honorable Company and the prince, as we hope to the satisfaction of Their High Excellencies, we take the liberty to bring to Their attention the miserable condition of the Honorable Company's lodge and houses here, the former of which is not only completely devoid of proper bastions and curtains, but is also so decayed that no repairs can be made to it anymore, the artillery standing low upon the ground and the same, as well as the ammunition, lying exposed to the will of anyone, as no sentry can prevent it without the danger of falling through his planks and poor sentry post; and the house of the first resident is of the same sort, not being habitable without danger, and that of the second resident is also very dilapidated; therefore

23 From Palembang, the 5th of July 1769. therefore, in the expectation of a favorable interpretation, we shall take the liberty at the first opportunity to send Their High Noble Lands a neat drawing, completely in accordance with the truth, in order to clearly demonstrate to Their High Noble Lands the necessity of an entire renewal, in the hope of a favorable interpretation. Furthermore, we find ourselves obliged to thank Their High Noble Lands heartily for our appointment as residents here, and we assure you that we shall exert everything possible to preserve the luster of the Honorable Company here, so that we may continually flatter ourselves with its highest favor and attention. We also find ourselves exceedingly obliged for the very generous addition of 3 percent on the pepper and one-quarter percent on the tin; we shall be driven by such encouragement to store these products in the Honorable Company's warehouses as much as possible, and especially to urge the ruler to propagate the pepper gardens and ensure the faithful gathering of the fruits. Regarding the issuance of passes, we have not found that anything was demanded for them here, and we shall also take care that nothing is asked for them in the future. We also thank Their High Noble Lands for the pantjalling Edam instead of the pantjalling De Lassum, and we shall employ the same in the service of the Honorable Company with all diligence, as we have spent some cash on the purchase of pepper and tin and would fall far too short upon the arrival of a ship, we very humbly request that our accompanying requisition may be satisfied as soon as possible, since at present tin is found in full sufficiency in the king's warehouses to load a ship at the first opportunity. Furthermore, respectfully presenting a letter from Their High Noble Lands addressed to the officers of the Honorable Company's ship Thuijs te Donk, and such further papers as are listed in the accompanying register. While everything here is in full peace and quiet, I take the liberty of returning the sloop De Batavier laden with 895 piculs of tin to the main settlement, carrying on that vessel also the residents Isaac Mens and Joan Berkhout, recalled by Their High Noble Lands, alongside the military personnel discharged from here who have served out their contracts and did not wish to make a new contract, as well as some other soldiers who were found here above the established number. Wherewith we remain with deep and respectful deference, below was written as above, lower: Your High Noble Lands' very humble and obedient servants, was signed J. van Campen and W. Just this moment, we were requested by the king to grant transport to Batavia for two of his emissaries with a retinue of court servants, in order to purchase there some necessities for the upcoming wedding ceremony of his grandson, which we cannot refuse upon his persistent request.
