Also, one cannot find it advisable, on any reasonable grounds or prospect, to postpone the sale of that article and wait until all ships and junks had arrived, since there is practically no likelihood of thereby obtaining a higher price than by selling at present, assuming that even if no junks or ships brought anything, no greater difference in the quantity than 3000 picols less than the above calculation could differ, which is no object, given the large quantity that is already on site, to effect any change in favor, whereas with a greater import one risked that prices might fall lower. Therefore, we, aiming in our opinion at the Honorable Company's advantage, have found it advisable to promote the sale as best as possible, as we have succeeded with not much trouble in knocking down that mineral to our three merchants at 10 Taels and 3 Mace the picol of 122 1/2 lbs, the Spanish dollar at 74 Candareens, according to the daily registers dated 6 July. 27 From China, December 1768. as the steerage compartment 'tween decks, which is customarily stowed with tea, cannot be done in such a case; therefore, according to their request, countersigned by the chief and second mates, they request to be discharged from the surplus number of leaguers that are customarily provided to ships of those charters, indicating that if the voyage from here should take so long that they cannot reach the Cape of Good Hope before 5 May and enter Table Bay, it is to be feared that it will be impossible or inadvisable, both due to sickness among the crew and misfortunes befalling the vessel, to head for St Helena; whereas on the other hand, God protecting them from an adverse voyage, departing from here by the end of December, they will be able to reach that point within the stipulated time, and in that case having water in abundance with the ordinary number of leaguers. Everything having thus been accomplished there, the return journey was undertaken and completed without any encounter, other than again having had to remain lying before various rivers, which brought the journey to 112 days of 24 hours, finally arriving on the 11th of June at this island, where everything was found in the most perfect order through the good supervision of the present Merchant and Warehouse Master Feith, who further reported that nothing had occurred other than what was recorded in his daily register. We had flattered ourselves that, since some very far-reaching differences had occurred between Governor Bingo and the Chinese (which is reported in detail in the kept daily register, to which we respectfully refer for the sake of brevity), this would have brought about some advantageous change in the Honorable Company's commercial position; however, that hope has completely vanished, as after very many debates, that nation having submitted, the banishment of some of the principal supercargoes, and the payment of six hundred Rijksdaalders in fines, those disputes have been settled, and their vessels, which had already been reloaded with their imported cargoes, are being unloaded daily. Regarding the acquisition of bar copper by the Chinese, we can inform Your Right Honorable Great Worships no differently than that sometimes, through later statements of its transport by the interpreters, junks which belonged to the trade of the previous year are only given to the remaining Chief upon the departure of the ships.
