From Java's East Coast, the 24th of December 1768: have caused the varieties together to fall 50 pieces lower, and thus currently between 450 and 500 pieces for one Spanish real, whereas for the somewhat worn Palembang ones people will no longer accept 2 for one, and it is generally desired that the same go out of circulation. In order now to pursue this, and by contrast to bring the doits into circulation, as well as to ensure the declaration of demonetization does not cause too much resentment, having taken the advice of the Prince of Madura, the Commander of the Eastern Salient, and the head of the Chinese there, weighing and considering all arguments arising for and against, I consider nothing better to propose to Your High Excellencies for the speedy success of the most beneficial objectives than that it might please you to grant authorization for the prohibition of all importation of Palembang picis; to declare those circulating in the Eastern Salient demonetized for the relief and direct introduction of the doits among the inhabitants, and by contrast to set a period of 4 months in order, for those who desire it, to exchange the good Palembang picis for doits, specifically 2000 pieces of those for 240 pieces of doits per Spanish real, or as they come to 60 stuivers calculated in doits according to the general exchange rate here in this country. From Java's East Coast, the 24th of December 1768: According to which calculation and a test conducted by melting down the aforementioned number of picis, it was found that they yield 4 catties of pure yellow copper, which is valued here at 5 to 6 Spanish reals per picul and thus would cause no loss, but the Company would thereby have introduced the currency of doits that brings it so much profit. However, it must certainly be considered as an objection on the other hand that one would find no opportunity, at least here, for a complete sale of such a quantity of copper in one or two years, and thus this would require Your High Excellencies' assistance with disposal at the capital. And here one would primarily need as soon as possible an amount of at least 150000 Spanish dollars in doits, whether for the exchange of the picis itself, or as a replacement for the treasury that is declared demonetized and can expect no further supply from outside; which aforementioned amount of doits would require an augmentation of at least another 50000 Spanish dollars within the span of a good half year, and would have to be followed by another 100000 in a year, after which one could maintain being able to state what annual supply of that specie will be needed. The just-mentioned difficulty of From Java's East Coast, the 24th of December 1768: not knowing any outlet as quickly as possible in the initial period for the exchanged copper of the picis diminishes somewhat, insofar as one could presuppose that the well-to-do themselves will prefer the smelting, and thus the sum of 150000 Spanish reals stipulated as immediately necessary will not be entirely used for exchange, but rather more than less in number will be necessary for circulation and compensation for those declared demonetized. In this manner, then, the doits would very easily and agreeably circulate together with the Chinese, Tonkinese, and Japanese picis, as is still in use in the princes' mancanegara and other lands, as both realm regents assured me during their recent presence, serving as an encouragement to remove the Palembang picis from circulation in the Eastern Salient and to introduce the doits there. Indeed, if this abolition regarding the Palembang picis succeeds according to the opinion and expectation of all knowledgeable persons here, there would in time be little difficulty in removing the other picis from circulation as well, as they can easily and without loss be disposed of elsewhere, where they are valued higher almost everywhere. However, this could not be taken into consideration because one knows there are not enough doits at hand, and this obstacle would be capable of causing the greatest confusion and rebellion. Just as I believe I may flatter myself with a well-founded hope of success regarding what is proposed herein and respectfully submit it to Your High Excellencies, the more so as I submit, subject to correction, that a very advantageous principle is directly enclosed in it, as the Company will thereby bring 200000 Spanish rixdollars in doits into circulation, and can also look forward to an equally large capital profit on the treasury still deemed necessary of fully 3 tons of guilders, taking into account the subsequent annual supplies for the continuous sustenance that the same also provide in other places.

From Java's North Coast, the 24th of December 1768: places of this coast will increase and truly also, as being very much desired by the princes, will stand to be benefited from it, whilst their peoples in the Mancanagara lands (among which Madiun, Jogorogo, Jipang, Pranaraga, Kediri, Wirasaba, Japan, Kertosono, etc. are counted, and which communicate most with the eastern salient) will, through the circulation of the duiten in that district, no longer be obliged, when they have to pay their lease or cacar monies, to go and exchange large money for kippings, but will now be able to pay in duiten themselves without loss to those authorized for that purpose, as a currency then acceptable to the lessees and the princes' chiefs, and already in circulation and value, which moreover the rulers of the realm promised me they would promote by express further laws in that regard, when one might now say the duiten are in circulation along this entire coast up to Cheribon, and solely in the Mancanagara and surrounding lands and the eastern salient together with the best sort of kippings, of which, as mentioned above, there would always be opportunity for disposal in the event of a sufficiency of duiten, receiving at Balambangan the duiten also, although the true success there must await the delivery of products, and in this matter the path has also been more or less cleared because by step by step making the Palembang kippings deformed and bringing them to a low price, one diverts the importer and has tacitly prohibited them, for which, from Your Right Honourables' attention shown to me on that article, I considered myself as well authorized as that recently at Surabaya all the broken and diminished ones were declared bullion to prevent a riot, whereby, as a hope of a pleasant success against all apprehension that might arise from earlier fruitless attempts, one may still allege what is cited above, namely that the duiten are now everywhere current and even desired, whereas in former times the contrary took place and the picis still circulated in abundance, which are now as little seen as the change in common circulation. For the convenience of the desired comparison of the kippings in sort and proof of the copper that comes from the Palembang kippings, I forward herewith a piece weighing 2 catties, being the result of 2000 kippings as they were melted according to the forwarded sample Z: R: and thus as good and bad and all bullion were still among one another. From Java's North Coast, the 24th of December Anno 1768: I hope then, with what has been alleged, to have sufficiently demonstrated this point to Your Right Honourables, and in this regard it will only remain to add that the requested quantity of duiten cannot arrive here soon enough because the common people from day to day become impatient on account of the bad Palembang kippings and their hoped-for elimination at Surabaya. However, I would not dare attempt to set the proposed plan in motion if I could not be provided with 150000 Spanish mats in the space of half a year and then again in that of one and a half years with an equal number successively, and that at the very least immediately in one instance with 100000, for which no more advantageous moment than the present is likely to be awaited. Thus in the meantime I shall respectfully await Your Right Honourables' approval thereon. At Balambangan, or rather off Ulupampang on the north side and at Grajagan on the south side, pearl oysters and reefs have been discovered. Of some found at the first-mentioned place, Major Colmand recently sent me a small lot, as the accompanying paper marked S: P: shows. The second sort marked P: was found by a Semarang burgher, who had brought some provisions thither, when opening oysters among the same; and the provisional regent there, Sutanagara, had related to the commander that at Grajagan quite a few of a somewhat larger sort were found in the oysters which they used for their food. He promised to send a bottle or two of them as soon as possible. This has as yet not been treated with much interest in order to get to the bottom of the matter better and to have competent people at an inspection, because if an effective fishery and the pearls are deemed good, it would succeed the better in everything. Therefore, I request Your Right Honourables to provide me as soon as possible with someone knowledgeable in this, whilst I have in general issued orders not to permit fishing by anyone and that the regent should make a collection of the pearls thus casually found by him until further disposition. The Balambangans claimed that the Chinese bought most from them for a trifle, and the largest for 2 Spanish mats apiece, the lesser from 200 to 400 kippings each. Upon his continuous solicitation, in order for once to have a change of air, if only for such a short time, I have further granted Major Colmand permission to come up to Semarang, not only to confer with him on several domestic matters at Balambangan, but also regarding the just-mentioned matter of the pearls, and to keep the Balinese petty princes in that vicinity, on the occasion of our force still at hand there,

To ratify this, if necessary, which I wished to induce their envoys—who are presently here and have brought me a letter to maintain friendship, a copy of which is annexed hereto—to do, and to lean towards maintaining a strict neutrality, and if possible to grant no admission to those whom the Company must consider its enemies and the ugliest smugglers of trade, among whom certainly the Ceramers and those trading under an English flag are to be counted; and recently five of the first-mentioned were at Badong and Buleleng with cloves and nutmegs, just as the English passed by, though they did not call there. If one could now persuade those princes of this, one would rightly have an opportunity to counter by force and with strong measures any transgression, which they will likely keep within themselves, and to punish that rabble in such a manner that they might become more deterred from navigation, just as the news reports that the aforesaid 5 Ceramers arrived at Bali very much battered, having had an unpleasant encounter with our force off the coast of Celebes. The envoys of the said princes, being presently here, have expressed that their principals would even be willing to visit me in person, either directly or via Balambangan, with a modest suite. They are also writing to the Major to request his intercession that Gusti Mangwi might regain Balambangan, under tolerance of our force and supreme administration there. All these emerging ideas that occur to me need to be thoroughly examined and stopped, in order to gain clearer notions of our intentions, as well as how one shall and can maintain those positions, which I also hope will gain your Excellencies' approval. At Panarukan, sapanwood is said to be felled. I am daily expecting the sample to present to your Excellencies, while in the meantime the people of Besuki have been ordered to fell a quantity, as it is believed that a small transport with profit had previously been carried on there privately among the Chinese, who investigate everything. In order that this letter should serve solely for the intended and aforementioned purpose, and so as not to work contrary to it through further delay, which would require more attention, I shall only have the honor to inform your Excellencies that the conference of the regents with the other ministers who accompanied them has concluded very much to mutual satisfaction and according to desire, having lasted a full 14 days longer so that they might bring to an end all arrangements and decisions here to prevent disputes from arising again, as at the place where they desired to leave the final decision to me, and this has also succeeded according to intention. While I take the liberty of presenting to your Excellencies a copy of the contract and further agreement for its greater ratification herewith, and refer to its contents, professing that on that occasion I perceived the most pleasant tokens of their mutual goodwill. On his journey hither, the Panembahan received the unpleasant news of the death of his dearly beloved son, Raden Tumenggung Nata Diningrat, and is now a humble petitioner that his son-in-law Raden Bagus, the nearest relative from the Sumenep regent family, may be appointed regent over the islands of Kangean, Sapudi, Sapansang, and Gili Genting, which the first-mentioned Raden Tumenggung held, which I can only appraise most favorably and respectfully recommend to your Excellencies; and I hope this will still bring some consolation to that prince. I remain, offering prayers especially at the approaching New Year for a double measure of God's richest blessings over all the Company's interests and your Excellencies' most revered persons, distinguished families, and all your most weighty deliberations and undertakings, with the most humble respect. The delay in this at Rembang certainly humbly requests Your High Nobility's pardon, for notwithstanding the order dated 5 July merely stating that the pantjallings were to be delivered to Batavia by the end of January, care was taken to bring to the Resident's attention that if the intended purpose were to be achieved, they would have to be at that location by the end of November. In his exoneration, however, I must note that every effort was made to get the pantjallings further prepared, but owing to the dilatory nature of the Javanese workmen in a short space of time, little reliance can be placed on their promise. The Japara Resident undertakes to supply fence and roof battens sufficiently to meet the convenience of the main station, and requests regarding the prices that the roof battens may be set at 1/3 of the 1-inch planks, the fence battens at 1/3 of the 1-inch, and the usuks at 1/3 of the 3-inch ditto, in which case he would be able to bear the offal. From Java's northeast coast dated 24 December 1768. princes as noted in the so-called book of Kleppoe, and so that this shall take place without obstacles or any inconveniences, it shall be ensured by both sides that proper authorized persons are also appointed for this purpose, who will not lack the authority to carry this into effect in the most peaceful manner and to keep it free from all cavils, both regarding the surrender and leading to continuous possession; and that in neither case shall any delay or procrastination occur under whatever pretexts. For the avoidance thereof, no rendering of account or payment of previously received revenues shall conversely be required to be done or demanded, but the revenues shall first be rendered and collected for the benefit of the rightful owner after the coming Puasa and the ensuing Mulud. Article 3: If any obscurity should arise from ignorance concerning the exact location of the places, desas, or negorijen that one claims from the other, which must very easily be discovered upon the slightest personal inspection, both sides shall amicably and as soon as possible appoint such persons for this purpose who will faithfully answer the aforementioned requirements upon surrender. From Java's East Coast, dated 24 December 1768 signed Johannes Vos into the hands of the prime minister Mangkoeprodjo, assisted by the Tommongong Aroenabinang and Sassra Diningrat of the susuhunan; below stood: Semarang, 20 December Anno 1768 Upon the concluding or sealing of this document, and after repeated mutual agreement that all points that could give rise to any dispute had been settled, a claim was finally brought forward on behalf of the emperor to half of the village of Awie, situated in the Mantjanagaras, and specifically in the land of Madiun, under the pretext that this was partitioned not long ago; which, however, was firmly and formally denied and contradicted by the prime minister Danoeredja. Whereupon both prime ministers and their aforementioned assisting chiefs, in order to avoid all disputes, left the decision thereof to the Governor, requesting him to undertake it; who then, in order that everything might be final hereby, judged it most consistent with equity that Awie remain entirely under the sultan, and indeed on the grounds that the cacahs of the Mantjanagaras thereby remain in an equal partition of number, whereas a different decision could give rise to new troubles. During the present attendance of the Panembahan of Madura and the commander of the Eastern Salient, with whom the regent of Lamongan had also come hither upon my summons, I most earnestly addressed and enjoined the latter regarding his arrears of still 150 lasts of rice, notwithstanding the favorable remission granted by Your Right Honorables in the past year for his entire contingent, to settle the same, if not in kind with rice, at least with payment; whereupon one might take into consideration whether the flight of the people from his district—which now contains not a third of the population it had when he assumed that regency, under promise that he would do everything to entice them back—might grant some liberty to propose to Your Right Honorables to obtain for him a reduction of 150 lasts of rice for two years. That regent, however, continued to insist that he was incapable of doing either the one or the other, and was rather prepared to resign his regency, as he then also requested his dismissal in order to go reside in Gresik with his family. Indeed, matters in the Lamongan district stand such due to the flight of people that it is not in a position to collect more than 100 lasts of rice. Yet it has also afterwards become clear and evident that this same regent is the principal, if not the sole, cause thereof, since by paying the common people only seven out of the thirteen Spanish rixdollars per measure, he practically compelled them to abandon their residences and fields and seek other places to live, as most of them have done in the neighboring region of Jipang. Thus, through his demonstrated unwillingness toward any redress, he doubly deserves to be removed, and the utmost necessity requires that an alert regent of promise be appointed in that district, who might then also be encouraged by some temporary relief to draw the people back to him and restore that region, which otherwise yields rice so abundantly, to its former flourishing state. To which end I have nothing better to propose respectfully to Your Right Honorables than that the present regent of Kudus be chosen as regent of Lamongan and that he be granted a reduction of 150 lasts of rice on the contingent for two years, submitting in that case very humbly that there may be appointed as regent of Kudus the person of Raden Ranga, nephew of the good former second regent of Jepara, Roto Prodjo, descended from the ancient, prominent Kudus lineage; the one of Lamongan under the name and title of Tomongong Djojo Pantiko, and the one of Kudus under that of Raden Tomongong Wiria Diningrat. I considered it my duty to bring this to Your Right Honorables at the earliest opportunity, so that through Your Right Honorables' venerated disposition, one might be enabled to start the agriculture this year with the newly appointed regent for that district, from which a good effect may be expected; whereas with regard to such self-interested and capricious subjects it is truly salutary to make an example, as Your Right Honorables also, in their most respected letter of 13 October last, clearly were pleased to make known their own concept leaning in that direction with regard to that district. In the coming week, when I also hope to dispatch all the general papers, having the honour to reply to the remainder of Your Right Honorable's most highly respected separate letters recently received, and to bring to Your knowledge on that occasion what is due, may I be permitted hereby to limit this solely with regard to the important article of the duiten, and namely principally with the marginal responses below to the nine points which Your Right Honorable in your very venerated resolution of the 3rd of January of this year have pleased to consider as arising in Your deliberations, that however advantageous the matter of the introduction of the duiten would be, nevertheless in consideration came into opposition. From Java's east coast, the 31st of March, Anno 1769 no duits or pennies that a similar supply of half a ton per year of patriotic money may well be needed in the long run, and thus the 20 tons of Indian money in duits for all the kippings in 7 years, including the 7 tons that one already has, would be sufficient; the 5 tons that one nevertheless now considers necessary in the first 3 years as aforementioned, and this being only 2½ tons of patriotic valuation and of which 1 ton was already requisitioned by Your Right Honourable in last December, there is, I believe, all hope that this quantity can be here in this country by Anno 1771 and in the beginning of Anno 1772, while one ton per year for the sequel will also be easily fulfilled. Moreover, however, in accordance with what was stated in the answered extract of the Missive from the Mother Country dated 10 October, Anno 1768, regarding one ton of Indian money per year for Java outside the eastern corner, the request must be observed, because these now also finding currency in the eastern corner will rather be wanted more than less, although once the eastern corner is properly provided with duits this can and may also be counted again toward raising the circulating course thereof for the whole of Java, having been demanded, and that even though the lords masters might please to meet the most recently petitioned one ton in pennies rather than in half duits, as one cannot expect to receive the same in the entire amount before the end of the year 1771 at the earliest, as the most recent example shows: although one requested two tons in duits in October 1766, the first 8000 guilders of those duits were received on 4 May 1768, and thus after the expiration of more than nineteen months, and the last parcel, besides the 14000 guilders still remaining, on 15 December 1768, 331 From Java's east coast, the 31st of March, Anno 1769 That in the proposed exchange of 2000 Palembang kippings for 240 duits, the present owner of the said kippings would at once have to undergo a loss of three-quarters of his capital, or rather 75 percent. Sixthly, That one cannot well expect that the Javanese would be so insensible to witness such an important disadvantage and would not inwardly incline to evade this loss in one way or another, which might sometimes serve the Company with disservice and to the bearing of some unpleasant burdens to quiet disturbances. Fifthly, on Articles 5, 6, 7, and 8. If Your Right Honourable calculate that the Palembang kippings still stand at 500, and thus at the time that they are declared bullion by the Company it is certain that the community loses 75 percent; but if Your Right Honourable please to consider that the aversion of the common people as well as of the chiefs has increased so exceedingly that not only shortly thereafter they had fallen to 1000, but now to 2000, or 4 for one good kipping, and even then are not accepted except with trouble and disputes, and when proceeding to the declaration of bullion at that price, they would truly lose nothing; and as I have already alleged in Article 1, a great quantity has already lain completely idle for reasons of their bad quality, and they have only been able to dispose of a few among the good ones. However, if it should please Your Right Honourable to grant some accommodation in this matter, as has more than once been pleased to occur to you on this subject, I believe that by giving them 25 percent, and thus 300 duits for a Spanish dollar, the duits will be brought into circulation in the most agreeable manner that one could ever desire, and then simultaneously with the melting of the kippings, or the disposal of the copper, provided they only have to add silver money received in cash for it, and then by this means also fully satisfy the representations made by the Regents when summoned to Sourabaya to deliberate over the introduction, From Java's east coast, the 31st of March, Anno 1769 Seventhly, That the quantity of yellow copper that would be collected together from the Palembang pitjes according to the made description of the multitude pursuant to the proposed exchange would indeed amount to 6000 pikols, and that the pikol would come to cost thirty-one and one-quarter Rijksdaalders. Eighthly, That the master being willing to find opportunity to change hands with the same on Java in one or two years, and thus having need for help therein, which one neither here nor elsewhere otherwise, either in the west because of the great, humbly offered under assurance of the most agreeable successes, as appears from an extract letter both from the commander and the Prince of Madura, which I have the honour to present to Your Right Honourable herewith. And the matter has appeared of such a nature to me that, the iron being hot as they say, I dared not leave it unhammered, and thus provisionally I did not want to oppose the delivery of some duits on that condition, in the hope that Your Right Honourable, approving this, will please authorize me for the continuation thereof up to 7 tons or the supplement of the Palembang kippings; which is then herewith my most humble request, as well as that I may receive at the earliest the remainder of the duits still on hand in Batavia and belonging to the aforementioned quantity of 7 tons, so as to have not even the appearance of shortage, and be put in a position to send them to the eastern corner. In this divided case the chiefs even take upon themselves to carry out the exchange, and can then come out very well with the copper, which will very easily find its outlet in small parcels in the export to Passiar and the manufacture of copperware, being all that it yields higher than 25 Spanish dollars profit for them, calculated that 2000 kippings give 4 catties of copper, which is taken at the very worst; and the Company then still gains 75 percent on the 350,000 guilders patriotic.

Honorable Sirs, duty-bound to report on the progress of this necessary work, beginning with the lands falling under Tidori, whereto the ensign Iosephus Stephanus, together with the bookkeeper Hendrik Pieter Sielman, were commissioned; but the latter having shortly thereafter been sent hither on account of his bad conduct, as is more fully known from the general resolutions of 5 November and the outgoing letter, that officer has from the month of August until the present eradicated 27,476 nutmeg trees in species, according to what was noted in separate resolutions of 13 June last past. And whereas the King of Tidor, contrary to his former custom, has had the goodness, upon the iterative instances of the first undersigned, to let the work continue, although previously His Highness could never be disposed thereto for longer than six months, we have made use of that good disposition and urged His Highness not to desist before all his lands up to the point of Dehepodo were completed. In order to make the King consent to this all the sooner, we have granted His Highness, to make good his expenses, a sum of 500 rixdollars, and had the same offered in deduction of that which Your Right Honorables will customarily be pleased to accord favorably to that prince. We were all the more moved to proceed to this by letters from the commissioner Stephaan dated 8 June of this year, whereby he intimates that the proposed work would take yet another two years, especially if, according to the orders given to him, one had to penetrate inland, since the further one penetrates the country, the more work one finds; having sent over, as proof, some measurements of genuine nutmeg trees which were felled three hours inland, which we take the liberty to send over for Your Right Honorables' consideration, while we nevertheless, at the session of 5 July, agreed to have the non-commissioned officers and common soldiers relieved by an equal number of others, because those men continually, during ten months, were subject to hot fevers and severe sicknesses due to the unhealthiness of that climate, and five sergeants and ten common soldiers were seen snatched away from their midst by death, while likewise a considerable number of the Tidoresen have died. For which reasons, and in order to spare the Europeans, we resolved on 5 July to employ, as many as can be induced to hire themselves out for that work to the Honorable Company at 9 guilders per month, for the extirpation work in those regions, native Ternatans, who are better hardened against the hardships of the climate and can penetrate through hedges and bushes just as well for the detection of the spice trees. In the territory of the King of Ternaten, we had entrusted the command over the extirpators to the spice-expert sergeant Isak Smit; but whereas, owing to his indisposition and his death which followed shortly thereafter, that work in our opinion proceeded somewhat sluggishly, the titular under-merchant and translator Francois Bartholomeus Hemmekam was sent thither to make that work make better progress, as well as to inquire where the Dombokkers most frequently arrived and traded, because the first undersigned deemed to have no unfounded suspicion that the Tombokkers managed to obtain the nutmegs—some of which the ensign Rijchel saw for sale at a low price in the year 1766 at the market of Tombokko, and which were previously judged to have been brought from the Banda Islands by smugglers—on this coast from the Alfurs, or indeed search for them in the forests themselves and transport them to their country, which also turned out to be so after investigation; for before the arrival of Hemmekam, Sergeant Smit had already discovered that a Dombocker, during the detection of the spice trees in the district of Tobaro, followed the extirpators into the forest under the pretext of searching for passafaas, but actually to obtain spices, while seeing himself discovered, he quietly slipped away and did not appear again. as well as among the subjects a certain jealousy has remained, which in our opinion will also never be completely extinguished, and also for the tranquility of the Honorable Company ought not conveniently to be entirely destroyed, yet this year has passed so fortunately that almost no disputes of importance, or which we deem worthy of noting here, have occurred to us; for among both the Ternatean and Tidorese subjects on Halmahera untrustworthy persons are always found, who then attack one another over a woman or prahu, and who subsequently hide again and keep quiet, and it is then also most advisable, when no continuous complaints are received about it, or if both parties are at fault, not to make much ado about it. Between the subjects of the King of Ternate themselves, however, some disagreements have arisen which could have erupted into worse, for the native inhabitants of Ternate, who inhabited some negorijen on the south side of Ternate, of which the largest was named Xulla Takoemie, had granted a good piece of land to the Makianese when they had to relocate due to the terrible eruption of the mountain, and now demanded, since Makian was habitable again and being rehabilitated, that they should depart thither, to which most, shunning the labor that awaited them, were not very inclined, so that those of Xulla Takoemie began to persuade them thereto by force of arms, which, however, was stopped through the intercession of the king's and realm's dignitaries, and by ordering an ensign and some soldiers thither, and by the departure of most Makianese to their island, all according to the note in the general resolution of the 8th of March last. Likewise, on the occasion of the extirpation of the spice trees, a dispute arose between the peoples of Tahoe and Togowaij concerning the borders, which, having been prematurely decided in favor of the former through the carelessness of the second commissioner Koene Koenes, the others resolved to oppose with force, so that they had already taken up arms and each gained a following, and that dispute would not have ended without bloodshed and further consequences detrimental to the general peace in which we found ourselves. On Mayu, according to Your Right Excellencies' permission, a corporal and two privates will be stationed as soon as His Highness of Ternate shall have prepared dwellings there for those soldiers and some Ternateans. Regarding the validity of the claim of the King of Batchian for compensation of expenses for various extirpations, of which His Highness makes mention: the records and contracts have been examined, but nowhere in the separate resolutions of 23 July and 9 September 1763 dealing with this matter is any promise found from the Lord of Schoonderwoert, but rather tergiversations and exceptions by the King, and in the latter not the slightest obligation. Only does the said Lord of Schoonderwaert make mention, in a letter dated 13 May 1763 written to the then resident Sergeant Jacob Andries Rokzien and attached hereto, to inform His Highness's subjects who assisted in the extirpation work, as if privately, that an extraordinary gift would not be withheld if they performed the work properly; and upon this letter the entire claim of the King of Batchian is founded. Which prince will never lack inventions to color his failure to fulfill his promises with an appearance of grievance, as if the promises on our side were likewise not being kept; and when it suits him, His Highness also makes no difficulty about sparing the truth. The son of the petty king of Jailolo, named Baroedie, who has been kept confined here until we should receive further orders from Your Excellencies in this regard, is now coming over to be sent to his father or else elsewhere, wherever it shall please Your Excellencies, since his detention here is only a burden to the Honorable Company, and his release would have adverse consequences because, being descended from the Patanese, he as well as his father would find a following there, and follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in piracy. Whereupon four days thereafter, or on the 15th of July, the king appeared at the meeting with some dignitaries of the realm and recited his request and sentiment regarding that Prince, and it was then resolved, in accordance with Your High Noble Excellencies' permission, to send that Prince to Batavia under civil arrest. While the First Signatory, apprehensive both through the actions of Secretary Kersseboom and because of the presence of the dignitaries of the realm that the resolution would not long remain secret, thought fit to have that Prince summoned to him under another pretext by Ensign van der Plas, who was known to him, but he was already absent; while the king, having just returned home, sent a request to the First Signatory to cause no stir and to cease the search, which was then accordingly ceased, and thus that Prince had time and opportunity to betake himself to Tidore and to request protection from that king, who a few days thereafter gave notice thereof to the First Signatory and requested pardon if he might have committed any offense against the Company. As a further proof that that Princess attends to the interests of Prince Amirie, it may serve that Her Highness on that same day, or on the 15th of this month, had sent to ask for an audience with the first-signed's wife, and, already dressed, upon the news that Prince Amirie had been summoned into the castle, stayed away and persuaded the king to abandon further search.
