The ship the Bartha Petronella having sailed from this roadstead on the 3rd of September last with our respectful letters, and having turned its bow toward the Fatherland from Jaggernaikpoeram on the 7th of October thereafter, we hope that, long before the arrival of this letter, it has safely and free of misfortune sailed into the desired port, and that our aforementioned letters sent therewith will have come safely to your High Noble, Highly Esteemed hands, of which copies, being the duplicates dispatched via Bengal, we have the high honor to offer humbly to your High Noble, Highly Esteemed together with this, besides such further papers and documents as are stated in the register accompanying this. Although Their High Nobilities, the Noble Supreme Indian Government at Batavia, were pleased to fix the departure of the aforementioned vessel from this coast at the latest on the 25th of September, that order could nevertheless not well be fulfilled due to the hindrances that delayed the loading, etc., of that vessel at the Jaggernaikpoeram roadstead, and in particular the rain that fell there for several consecutive days, according to the report that we have thereof; although the chiefs, in their letters of advice of the 10th of October [illegible] concerning the departure of the said ship, do not make the least mention of it, wherefore they have now been reproached for that negligence, and the reasons have been demanded of them, not only why that vessel sailed twelve days later than the Noble Supreme Indian Government at Batavia had been pleased to determine, but displeasure was also expressed that no more bales were given to that vessel than the 1071 bales laden therein, which indeed could have been done in case some thousands of pounds of the pepper it carried had been unloaded from it, as not 200,000 lb were needed to stow the said quantity of bales, and one would thus rather have seen that preference had been given to the linens, especially since the chiefs had been authorized to sell the unnecessary pepper there; although we believe and must determine that this is to be imputed to the negligence of the ship's officers in stowing the said vessel rather than to the chiefs themselves, as the latter will have proceeded in that regard according to the report and declaration of the skipper and his officers. For the collation, as Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships have been pleased to prescribe for our dutiful observation; a specific indication of the distribution of said Petition being made in the accompanying provisional reply to the same, to which we take the liberty to refer, as well as to our humbly submitted reply in the margin of the extracts from Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships' most revered General Missives addressed to Their Right Noblenesses, the Noble High Indies Government at Batavia, dated 23 September and 15 October of last year, inserted in our respectfully dispatched letters of 14 October last to the said Noble High Indies Government, a copy of which, as well as of our advices sent under date of 14 March of this year, we humbly submit herewith, together with the successive resolutions taken by us from 14 December of the past year until 21 November last, as well as copies of our secret papers, to all of which we take the humble liberty to refer regarding that which has occurred and been executed here in the Master's service since our humble advices of last spring. Concerning the result of the procurement of the past trading year, we respectfully present to Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships the formal demands answered in triplicate, showing, as do the separate statements attached thereto, that the total collection along this Coast amounted to a number of 2500½ packs, and thus 13½ packs less than the past year; which shortfall, however, originates primarily from the fact that this year's demand is much smaller than that of the past year. Regarding the sale of merchandise, we have the honor to inform Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships respectfully that the profits earned thereon in the concluded trading year amount to a sum of ƒ669182:12:8, thus ƒ100498. 3. 10 more than the past financial year. However, in order to let Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships know how matters stand at the other factories, where the reduction thereof has succeeded fairly well, we present to Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships a demonstration compiled from the papers already received, from which it will appear that the debts in the past year have decreased by an amount of ƒ128519:19:4; and should the still-missing documents from the aforementioned office of Jaggernaikpoeram arrive in time, we shall have the honor to present the aforementioned general statement to Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships with the Ceylon ships of the second consignment, together with the copies of our advices which we are customary to dispatch annually via Ceylon to the High Indies Government at Batavia, but whose dispatch we have postponed for this time until 10 January next, owing to the delay of the aforementioned Jaggernaikpoeram papers. Concerning the country's domains and revenues, we likewise refer to our dispatched advices to the Noble High Indies Government dated 14 October last, since all of them have been farmed out as usual, requiring no special references worthy of Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships' revered attention in that regard. Meanwhile, we respectfully present to Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships a distinct report or demonstration of all types of textiles of this Coast, showing how the prices have been raised and lowered from the year 1760 to 1770, with the reasons for their increase and decrease, in compliance with Your Right Noblenesses and Right Worships' revered command and the order resulting therefrom.
