The 3. December In the city of Cochim Simon van Jongeren sworn translator Hereafter the Honorable received three olas, the first and second from the King of Cochim, the third from the Paliath Achan, reading respectively as follows. Translation of an ola written by the King of Cochim to the Honorable Governor and Director Christiaan Lodewijk Senff received the 3. December 1770. Through Moendrij Chimaer we have previously informed the Honorable of the present matters, the condition thereof, and our long-standing possession and that of our ancestors we have written different times to the Honorable, and in addition had the old accounts of the collected dues shown by our people; notwithstanding this, the Honorable continues to persist in doubt. We shall uphold by an oath that our kingdom has had the possession thereof until the date of this letter, when we come to meet the Honorable in person, for which may the Honorable kindly provide the opportunity with good will and come to a resolution to allow us to retain and enjoy those privileges as we have enjoyed before, requesting to that end that a personal meeting may be arranged: we write to the Honorable to take a solemn oath over this minor matter by virtue of the close friendship that has existed between our kingdom and the Honorable Company, for we would never enter into taking an oath over a dispute with another, as the Honorable can well understand; therefore we request that the Honorable take all this to heart, and send us a satisfactory reply via the interpreter. Signed by His Highness. Another written by the said King as above, received on the aforementioned date: We have received and read the Honorable's ola at Angemael and understood its contents. The Honorable writes to us that the Honorable had received news from Cannanoor that the Nabab Heijder Alichan had sent a letter to us for the Honorable. The letter has not yet been brought here, and as soon as it arrives, I shall have it delivered to the Honorable immediately. Signed by His Highness. Yet another written by the Paliath Achan to the same as above, received on the date as above: I received the Honorable's letter on the 2. of this month at Angecaijmael in the evening around 5. o'clock. It is impossible to describe the grief that I felt in my heart when I read that letter. Upon my arrival in the city in July last, I gave the Honorable to understand that this was an evil and unfortunate year for me, and therewith requested that the Honorable would grant me permission to shut myself up in a certain place to pray for forgiveness of my sins; now, upon reading that letter, I have had to conclude firmly that this is a bad year for me, for it is stated therein that behind the Honorable's back I supposedly spoke very ill of the Honorable; but no one would tell the Honorable what it actually consisted of, and that I would best be able to explain what I really had against the Honorable, and that the Honorable wished for nothing more than that the whole world might know of it. For which reason the Honorable gave me the freedom, and even requested me, to come in person into the city and in the presence of the Honorable and of all council members to state everything without fear, because I thought that I could excuse myself and burden the Honorable. I testify thereupon that I have not spoken a single word against the Honorable, neither to great nor small people, much less that I ever had such in my thoughts or meant it; if it is so, let an opponent of mine step forward who could maintain or prove such, and I undertake to convince him of untruth, or otherwise I am prepared to confirm my statements with a solemn oath. But if the Honorable does not please to proceed thereto, and wishes to remain in that uncertainty, then I request the Honorable once again to have this matter investigated and to vindicate me. After the arrival of the Honorable here in this place, I appeared in the presence of the Honorable, and from that time onward I have attempted nothing other than to place the King's affairs and those of the Honorable Company on a firm footing, whereby I have brought many enemies upon myself, as I have already given notice thereof to the Honorable; but the Honorable cared little about it at that time, and now, through the bad planet that rules over me, the Honorable has granted a hearing to it, and nothing else remains for me than to take my refuge in the Almighty, that He would deliver me from the displeasure that the Honorable has conceived against me. The 3rd December In the city of Cochim Translation of an ola written by the salchinoor to the resident of Chettua on the 3rd December 1770. I have understood that the king of Travancore and Cochim had sent some men to the Cochin Palace, from where a battle is said to have already been fought against the Honourable Company's people. Therefore, I request Your Honour to inform me how matters stand there. I have also understood that there is an intention to send some troops to Chettua by way of Triporattij to storm the fort, and that those men were already on the march. At Chettua there are only a few people, and should the troops invade the sandy land and make themselves master of it, it would be very harmful to the Honourable Company and to us. If these rumours should be The 3rd December In the city of Cochim true, then I shall, for the assistance of the Honourable Company, send some men into the sandy land to remain stationed there. I hear furthermore that as soon as things get underway at Cochim, some troops would immediately march towards Chettua, and be so good as to let me know what Your Honour has heard of it. Tuesday morning His Right Honourable wrote an ola to the king of Cochim, the draft of which word for word follows. Draft ola written by the Right Honourable Lord Governor A:o 1770. The 4th December In the city of Cochim and Director Christiaan Lodewijk Senff to the king of Cochim on the 4th December 1770. I received Your Highness's ola yesterday and saw from it that Your Highness desires to hold an oral conversation with me. This would have been good, even a month and a half ago, when I so earnestly advised Your Highness to do so, but now it is much too late. For Your Highness has not only committed open hostilities yourself, but Your Highness has also exerted all his power to bring the king of Travancore so far as to break the most solemn treaties of peace and friendship and take up arms against the Honourable Company. Consequently, Your Highness is no longer the one Your Honour was before. All kings of Cochim, since the Honourable Company conquered the realm and placed one of your ancestors on the throne, have A:o 1770. 157 A:o 1770. The 4th December In the city of Cochim acknowledged that benefit and conducted themselves as faithful subordinates of its protection, but Your Highness has entirely forsaken the Honourable Company, wilfully cast off its protection, and even sought to plunge it into the greatest difficulties. And for that reason it is also impossible for me to receive Your Highness as a friend or to enter into negotiations with Your Highness on any matters whatsoever, as long as Your Highness gives no adequate satisfaction regarding those misdeeds, and as long as Your Highness does not beforehand in writing and in the most solemn manner promise that Your Highness will again, as before, acknowledge the Honourable Company as his lawful protector, and in that capacity henceforth behave faithfully and obediently towards it. The rest I have made known orally to Moendrij Chimaer, whom I do not doubt will inform Your Highness of everything. On the 4th of this month, we received at Angecaimael the ola that Your Right Honorable sent via the under-interpreter, which we have read and the contents of which we have understood. And everything that Your Right Honorable made known to us through the under-interpreter and Chimaar, they have made known to us, and we have given them the answer to all of it to report to Your Right Honorable. We have written to Your Right Honorable to hold a personal meeting in order to settle the matters amicably and to consider everything according to law and fairness regarding what is rightfully due to us. We have received no answer from Your Right Honorable to that in the ola now sent, but rather regarding clearing the difficulties out of the way of the suffering party. When our lawful grievances are heard and we are reinstated in our long-standing possessions according to the ancient Year 1770. ancient customs, only then will the difficulties of the suffering party be cleared out of the way; otherwise, their difficulties could not be cleared out of the way, much less that they may enjoy a peaceful habitation. Upon encountering any disputes, one cannot settle the matter in any other satisfactory manner than by the swearing of a solemn oath, and by virtue of the close friendship that resides between us and the Honorable Company, we have tendered the oath because we know for certain that we have a righteous cause. For as long as Your Right Honorable does not proceed to allow us to retain and enjoy our tolls and privileges according to ancient customs, we will not tolerate that they should be permitted to come to that place, and if they were to do so, we will have them punished according to their deserts. Furthermore, we have seen in Your Right Honorable's ola that if we wish to decide the dispute absolutely by force of war, we should only declare so. We will not wage war against our ally the Honorable Company, and we were never of a mind to do so either. We request Your Right Honorable to take into consideration the ancient friendship and alliance that resides between us and the Honorable Company, and to direct everything accordingly. On the 1st of this month, Your Right Honorable sent us an ola via the under-interpreter speaking about the matter of Calliga. In the custody of the said Calliga, a certain Canarese named Gowinda from Porca had kept a chest Year 1770. The 5th of December in the city of Cochin a chest with money, well sealed. Calliga stole that money, for which reason, complaints having been brought before the then ruler of the city, His Right Honorable ordered him to satisfy that money, whereupon he paid a portion and executed a bond for the other portion, which is fully known to everyone. Afterward, he brought a vagabond to himself and made several merchants in Cochin believe that he could make gold and silver; thereupon, he received a large sum of money from those people. And as these people found themselves so deceived, they came to us with their grievances. We sent men to fetch Calliga, and when those warriors came there, they saw fresh meat and drink standing in Calliga's house; and that has also become notorious. Your Right Honourable has no reason to undertake such things against us, for we have given no cause for it to the Honourable Company. In the month of September our tolls and rights of Cochin were appropriated and violence was committed against our people; having come here to negotiate about that matter, an attack was made at night on the freehold of Cumbelon, and the low people were made to seize the women and carry them off. Now they have invaded our court, and have seized and carried off the men and women who were there. The Canarins of Cochin who fall under our disobedience were punished and protected by our ancestors in various ways, and because Calliga committed some improprieties against us, we had that action taken against him. We have never heard that any of the gentlemen who came into the government here on behalf of the Honourable Company had treated our court and subjects in such a manner. The subadar has conveyed the particulars to us verbally, and the contents of the said letter seemed very dear and agreeable to us. We have learned with great pleasure of the arrival of your Honorable Esteemed at Cochim; therefore we send two of our ragiaadoors thither to pay our compliments to your Honorable Esteemed. In our previous writing we clearly set down the hostilities that were committed against us. Since then, they have fallen upon Baijpin and have shot dead the guards whom we had placed there in our courts, defiled the pagodas and palaces, carried away the statues, violated the sanctuary, broken down the houses, seized the treasures, captured and carried off the women, and the Christians have taken up their residence in our palaces; in sum, unheard-of outrages have been committed against us that were never practiced before this. Therefore we consider it necessary to bring all this to the knowledge of your Honorable Esteemed, and to which end we have also given orders to our ragiaadoors to give your Honorable Esteemed proper information of everything, just as we have not neglected to have a detailed report of what occurred made daily by our servants to the Right Honorable Esteemed Lord Governor. Shortly thereafter His Right Honorable received word concerning the arrival of the First State Minister of the King of Travancore named Calij Coemara Sarwadicaria Caren, The 9th of January in the city of Cochim to whom His Right Honorable wrote an ola requesting him to come inside to speak with His Right Honorable about some necessary matters; whereupon on the 10th, Thursday morning around 8 o'clock, the said Minister came inside, and after compliments were exchanged regarding inquiries after the health of his master, as is otherwise customary on such an occasion, His Right Honorable said that he had learned with great pleasure that he had been dispatched hither by His Highness for the administration of His Highness's affairs, and that His Right Honorable had heard alongside this that he was a person who possessed good and commendable virtues, just like the deceased Balia Sarwadicaria Caren who had come here last year and had settled all the old disputes with His Right Honorable, whereby he had gained a great name in the Company's papers from Batavia; under that confidence His Right Honorable has taken the liberty of having him requested inside the city. 243 The 13th of January in the city of Cochim that he had applied his utmost efforts, but had encountered great difficulty, as the King of Cochim would by no means listen to the new boundary demarcations, nor to the cession of the Canarese bazaar; but concerning the new toll, he was willing to abolish it and return to the old custom. Great arguments having occurred over this, His Honourable and Worshipful demonstrated with the most solid proofs that the demand of the Honourable Company was legitimate, and therefore His Honourable and Worshipful requested the said Minister of State to urge the King of Cochim in the most earnest manner to bring him to reasonable sentiments, as His Honourable and Worshipful well knew that if he, in the name of his master, ordered the King of Cochim to enter into an equitable settlement, the matter would be settled most expeditiously; which having undertaken to do, they spoke further of the expenses of the war, which the King had to undertake to pay to the Honourable Company. The sarwadicariacaren asked His Honourable and Worshipful how much the same would amount to, so as to be able to present it to the King of Cochim. His Honourable and Worshipful said that it would not amount to more than 20000 Ropias. Subsequently, he took his leave and returned outside again. 16 Wednesday in the morning, the Minister of State of the King of Trevankoor arrived again within this city, with whom His Honourable and Worshipful entered into negotiations regarding the present disputes. He declared that, speaking with the King of Cochim about all the points, His Highness had declared himself willing to enter into accommodating all the disagreements in an amicable manner; but coming to the main matter regarding the limits of the city and the Canarese residing at the bazaar of that nation, His Highness would by no means hear of it, adding that His Highness would rather abandon the entire Realm and go on a pilgrimage than Ao. 1771 245 The 16th of January in the city of Cochim enter into any cession. The Honourable and Worshipful Lord Governor, hearing this, replied to him that it was to be wished that he vacate the Realm and that one had a man of understanding and knowledge in the government rather than such a person who did not know how to preserve his own welfare, honour, and reputation. Furthermore, they proceeded to demonstrate to this Minister of State the justice of our claim through the old lease conditions, maps, and the contents of the article mentioned in the contract concerning that chapter, from which he fully acknowledged that our demand was founded on good and fundamental grounds. Therefore, His Honourable and Worshipful asked what he intended to do in this matter; to which he replied that he would provide a proper report to his master of all that he had heard and seen from His Honourable and Worshipful as well as the pretensions of the King of Cochim, and await his further orders, whereupon he would come into the city to speak further with His Honourable and Worshipful about this and take his leave. Translation of an ola written by the King of Zamorin to the Right Honourable Lord Governor and Director, Christiaan Lodewijk Senff, received the 17th of January 1771: Moerianattij Nambiaar has made known to us that he was summoned to Cochim and that he treated upon affairs there with Your Right Honourable, and this Moerianattij falls directly under the Honourable Company, whose land has been unlawfully taken into possession by the King of Cochim; and after his return from Cochim he appeared before us with his grievances, and we find great difficulty in helping and assisting him in his affairs; therefore, if it pleases the Honourable Company to proceed with assisting him, we likewise shall not fail to do our utmost best; as the friendship between us and the Honourable Company is increasing more and more, it goes without saying that all small matters could be redressed without the least difficulty, just as Moerianathij is also of that opinion, and which cannot be unknown to Your Right Honourable either; Amonikhan has advanced as far as Toddawaoer, where he has extorted much money from the subjects of our realm and seized our rights and privileges, with the intention to extend his power further to the west as far as Cargapose, to which end the King of Cochim and Taroer Tekken Nagen with his heirs are supporting the said Amonikhan; we request the assistance of the Honourable Company to be able to stop the same, concerning which we have spoken what is necessary with Moerianattij Nambiaar; we have heard that some unrest has arisen there, therefore we request Your Right Honourable to let us know the circumstances thereof; and what service we can render regarding the Honourable Company's service in maintaining the good friendship between us and the Honourable Company, no failure shall be found on our side; signed by his ola.
