I have heard that Your Honor has come down with some troops of the Nabab Hijder Alichan, His Excellency has done me the honor even to write a note to me, and since I have no opportunity to send my reply directly, I therefore very kindly request that Your Honor will arrange a secure delivery for the accompanying letter. Tuesday in the morning the ordinary envoys of the King of Cochin came inside this city, to the Captain of the Christians, and from there they went together to the residence of the Jewish merchant Ezechiel Anno 1771. The 22nd of January in the city of Cochin Anno 1771 Ezechiel, in order to treat for an accommodation regarding the present differences; where, having held extensive arguments with one another, they parted from one another without being able to come to a decision. Wednesday before noon the aforesaid mediators gathered again with one another, and after a lengthy discourse the envoys of His Highness declared that they would persuade the King to execute an ola whereby His Highness would declare that what had passed caused him sorrow, and that he would surrender himself under the protection of the Honorable Company, recognizing the same as his protecting Lord. This having thus been resolved, the envoys departed outside again. 24. Thursday before noon the aforesaid envoys of the King of Cochin appeared with the so-called ola from His Highness, for the settlement of the matter in question, and delivered the same to the Jewish merchant Ezechiel Rabbij and the Captain of the Christians, who presented the same to the Honorable worshipful and stated that His Highness, according to the verbal report of his envoys, was inclined in all respects to The 24th of January in the city of Cochin Anno 1771 conform to the wise advice and judgment of the Honorable worshipful, with which report the Honorable worshipful was well pleased, and thereupon had the aforesaid ola translated, which in substance contains as follows. 261 The 25th of January in the city of Cochim, understood, but cannot comprehend what purpose is actually intended thereby; For Your Highness pleases to say that if I were willing to give assurance that the Company shall rescue His Highness from all his difficulties, and to give the required notice thereof to the High Government in Batavia, Your Highness in that case would do nothing else than rely thereon and exercise patience; but how is it possible that Your Highness demands such an assurance from me, or that I can give the same, for Your Highness himself has plunged into great difficulties; and would I then be obligated, or ought I to bind myself, to rescue Your Highness out of them again? It is what my office entails, and for that reason I will also not be able to fail to give a detailed report to the Noble Government in Batavia of everything that has occurred since the 2nd of August last; I will have to say and confirm with genuine evidence that Your Highness, for some years past, to the detriment of trade, has introduced new tolls on the Company's subjects, and has assumed an absolute jurisdiction and has even appropriated the territory of the city, along with some other lands to the north that directly fall under the Honorable Company; that Your Highness has refused to grant a hearing to my grievances brought against this; that Your Highness has even refused to enter into a friendly negotiation with me in this regard, and that when I, upon that refusal, was compelled, for the maintenance of justice, to prohibit the new tolls and to restore the Honorable Company again to the possession of its lawful subjects and of the territory of the city, Your Highness thereupon not only made his complaint in person to the King of Travancore, but also brought back from there a large force of people, erected fortifications, made heavy threats, and even committed open hostilities, to the extent that I was likewise compelled to make some movements in order to place myself in a state of defense and, if possible, to bring Your Highness to reason in an earnest manner, while friendly representations would not help. Consequently, I shall indeed directly expose the conduct pursued by Your Highness and by all those who, both inside and outside the city, openly and secretly helped and supported Your Highness therein, but can by no means mention anything in favor of Your Highness; if Your Highness desires that such shall happen, Your Highness will have to do that yourself: and for this I give Your Highness complete freedom; the letters that Your Highness might prepare for that purpose and send to us will certainly be delivered. If Your Highness will then sit quiet for so long until an answer thereto arrives, it is well; if not, Your Highness can do everything that pleases him, I will no longer contradict Your Highness; I have had everything put before Your Highness that necessarily had to precede, in case Your Highness wished to cover over what has passed and betake himself again with a sincere heart under the faithful protection of the Honorable Company; also, firm assurance was given to me that the erected stockades would be demolished and the incurred expenses would be reimbursed, but now that I see that on the part of Your Highness word is kept so poorly, and that the points stipulated beforehand are not even spoken of anymore, I intend to concern myself no longer with that entire matter. the limits of the plain that was cleared at that time can still be seen to this very day; and when the Canarese and the Portuguese had arrived here, and who the inhabitants of the lands of Mattancherry have been, is very well known; all of which, taking it into consideration, Your Right Honourable will be able to comprehend all the better; on the evening of the 21st current, Murianattu Nambiar went from Chetwai to the eastern lands and set fire to a certain palace of ours situated at Ginalicodai; And if the Right Honourable Lord Governor has any love for our kingdom and for us, we do not doubt that these matters can be accommodated to satisfaction according to old usage, as your Right Honourable well knows. But in the event that through our misfortune the Right Honourable Lord Governor should pay no heed to our request and thus wish to depart for Batavia, then we shall be obliged to submit our grievances to their High Mightinesses at Batavia, from whose righteous equity we expect that we shall again be restored to our old possessions and freedoms, for the bond between our kingdom and the Honourable Company is of such a nature that great note will be taken of it. There have been people who had brought reports against us to Your Honourable Worship; and upon the proposal that Your Honourable Worship made to us, we maintained the opposite by passing an ola; and as soon as Your Honourable Worship was informed of the truth thereof, Your Honourable Worship sent that ola back to us, and at the same time promised that those forgers should receive work according to their deserts; therefore we request Your Honourable Worship that they may be corrected according to their deserts. The 1st of March in the City of Cochim Anno 1771 Friday morning at about 9 o'clock the Prince of Cartamana came to the Honourable Worshipful Lord Commander Moens. After exchanging compliments, he complained to His Honourable Worship about the Resident of Paponettij, Medeler, concerning the sequestration of his gardens and lands, as well as those of certain inhabitants of the country who, likewise appearing before His Honourable Worship, brought forward their grievances, complaining about various points, very confused and obscure, with the notification that they could not live in that country in peace and quiet; whereupon His Honourable Worship ordered the Prince as well as the inhabitants of the country to set their grievances down on paper, and stated that His Honourable Worship would shortly summon the Resident into the city to examine those complaints, and finding that the Resident is in the wrong, would strictly correct him and grant the complainants equitable satisfaction; provided that they must be on their guard that they do not wrongfully accuse the Resident; and should it be found that their complaints are unfounded, they would, instead of an equitable satisfaction, undergo a severe punishment as an example to others who might in the future attack a head of a place with groundless complaints. Thus the Prince took his leave and returned outside. Saturday before noon there arrived in this city the Ministers of the King of Cranganoor, Aij Ertja Menon and Bakkij Kaijmaal, with complaints against the Resident of Paponettij; to whom the same answer was given as was done to Prince Cartamana, who likewise undertook the journey back to Cranganoor so as to appear also by the time the Resident arrived here for the examination of their disputes. Wednesday morning Prince Cartamana with Bakij Caijmaal and Aij Ertja Menon arrived in this city and desired to know when the Resident would come here to investigate and settle their disputes; whereupon the answer was that the complainants could go peacefully to Paponettij, and that when the Resident had finished his work, he would come here, at which time they might also appear together to examine and settle their differences. 14. Thursday before noon the emissaries of Adij Ragia came first to the Right Honourable Worshipful Lord Governor, and gave to His Right Honourable Worship a letter from their master which they had brought along from Cannanoor; and after expressing true and sincere affection for the interests of the Honourable Company in the name of their master, they took their leave and went subsequently to the residence of the Honourable Worshipful Lord Commander Moens, where, after a polite expression of mutual friendship, the emissaries handed over a letter from Adi Ragia addressed to His Honourable Worship. Which having been received, His Honourable Worship said that in consideration of the close friendship that had existed between the Honourable Company and Adi Ragia, the Honourable Company had ceded the city of Cannanoor to him; thereupon the envoys declared that thereby the obligation of their master to the Honourable Company was doubled, and therefore his endeavours would be nothing other than to live in a close engagement with the Honourable Company as he had ever done. Monday morning, the Captain of the Christians came to the Honorable Worshipful Lord Commander Moens with a complaint about a certain decision that the King of Cochim was said to have taken to pillage and destroy the house of his nephew, standing and situated at Angecaijmael, and that to that end a number of 200 Coengo Coektas had already been sent to that house, who had already surrounded the house and by all expectations would not wait long to tear it down. Tuesday morning the Regidoor of the King of Cochim came and made known to His Honorable Worship that a dispute had arisen with the Captain of the Christians, but that the same had been settled amicably, the origin of which had arisen on account of the smuggling that the Christians residing at Angecaijmaal sought to commit in the pepper. Which His Honorable Worship having accepted for communication, they showed a list of such goods as had recently gone missing at Brijvien, Narica, Coesipallijen, Palliporte, as well as at Loembelotto, on the occasion when the Company's lascarins were dispatched thither, saying that they had given that statement these days to the Lord Governor, but had received as an answer that they had dallied too long with that statement and had now come too late, and therefore addressed themselves to the Lord Commander; whereupon His Honorable Worship answered that His Honorable Worship held this as communicated. Just at that date came the Canarese Ananda Mallen, ordinary envoy of the King of Trevancoor, and thus in the name of the Regidoor of His Highness who was at Angieaijmaal, to give notice of the aforesaid smuggling which the Christians there committed in the pepper, but that that affair was already settled among themselves. Wednesday before noon His Right Honorable received for the first time an ola from the Paliat Achan containing a request to be accepted into grace again as appears below. Translation of an ola written by the Paliat Achan to the Right Honorable Lord Commander Adriaan Moens, received the 17th of April 1771. I hereby make a very urgent request to Your Right Honorable, expecting that Your Right Honorable will please embrace this and take into consideration that my ancestors have always been faithful ministers of the Honorable Company and that I, following in those footsteps, have likewise rendered great services to the state, as Your Right Honorable, upon making inquiry among the gentlemen both of the city and outside of it, shall further hear. Ever since I attained my years of majority, I applied myself to nothing else than to promote the welfare of the realm's affairs and interests, ingratiating myself into the favor of the successive rulers, and asking them for counsel and deed regarding all necessary matters, and putting into effect everything that they prescribed to me. And upon the arrival of the Right Honorable Lord Governor at the city of Cochim, I maintained the oldest engagements with His Right Honorable until the month of August last; but as soon as His Right Honorable undertook certain matters regarding Cochim, the King requested that those matters might be examined according to law and equity, and I also supported the request of His Highness; wherefore His Right Honorable saw fit to have a placard published against me and to declare me a rebel. Thus I had to undergo affronts that were never before suffered under my ancestors; all this I viewed with good eyes and endured with patience out of respect for the Honorable Company, and thus taking up my residence at Chenotta, I sent an ola to the Right Honorable Lord Governor. Governor; whereto His Right Honorable sent me an answer, which document is transmitted herewith to Your Right Honorable, and if I had committed a great crime against the Honorable Company, His Right Honorable would not have written to me in such a manner; which sufficiently denotes that I have committed no offense against the Honorable Company nor against His Right Honorable. If such can be demonstrated with written documents, witnesses, or otherwise, I remain ready to undergo such punishment as His Highness and the Honorable Company shall please to impose upon me; but failing that, I pray Your Right Honorable to accept me again into grace and to maintain me in my prerogatives as of old. The law of the Honorable Company also entails that whenever someone commits a crime, he is brought to examination and corrected according to law and equity. Shortly thereafter, the ordinary envoys of the King of Cochim came into this city; after the customary compliments, they said that their master had let His Right Honorable be requested to come into this city and pay a visit to His Right Honorable; whereon His Right Honorable answered them that His Highness could come in whenever it pleased him, as his house always stood open to him. The aforementioned Regidores said further that their master would gladly see that his field commander, the Paliat Achan, might be present at this visit. His Right Honorable, who gladly wished to bring the Paliat Achan to a deep humiliation because he is known as an arrogant, cunning man, answered thereto that this request could not be granted; that as long as His Right Honorable recognized the Paliat Achan as a rebel, he would not even correspond with him, much less receive him on a visit, and that if His Highness should resolve to come inside, he could choose a day for it, when His Right Honorable would accept him with all affection, but not the Paliat Achan; thus the envoys went outside with the promise to come again the next day with word. Friday before noon the Sarvadhikariakar of the King of Travancore named Coomara Pula came into this city and made known to His Right Honorable that his master, having understood the departure of the Right Honorable Lord Governor Senff and the assumption of supreme authority of this Coast by His Right Honorable, had expressly ordered him to undertake the journey hither and to congratulate His Right Honorable therewith; for which civility the Lord Commander, having expressed thanks, further said to the same that His Right Honorable had not neglected, according to old custom, to already communicate the assumption of administration in a letter to His Highness, which was sent through the address of Ananda Mallan together with the requested pepper passes; but he replied thereto that that letter had not yet been delivered there when he took leave of the King.

The 29th of April in the City of Cochim Anno 1771 took, further that courtier said that his Master's longing and wish was nothing other than to preserve unaltered the old friendship and harmony between him and the King of Cochim and the Honorable Company. His Honor answered him thereto that his Master would perceive no change in that regard on his side, as his Honor's intention is none other than to live in good harmony with all the friends and allies of the Honorable Company, so long as they did not fail in their contracts. Further, speaking about the delivery of pepper, the aforementioned sarvadhikaryakar promised that his Master would not fail to fulfill that which His Highness had already had assured to the Lord Commander. His Honor testified that he did not doubt that in the least, but it was to be wished that a noteworthy quantity were brought in at present. He answered thereto that nothing should be lacking in his duty, but that His Honor must also consider that the pepper lands lie scattered far and wide, and that the gathering could not take place as quickly as one thought. Furthermore, His Honor brought up the article of the old debt of Altinga, declaring that His Honor knew very well that his Master had not settled that account and that he could produce no proof either, repeating on this occasion all that His Honor had already made known regarding this through messages, and that His Honor advised His Highness once more not to remain equivocal on that matter any longer, but rather to speak straight from the shoulder; as His Honor would otherwise have to do something that His Highness would not gladly see, but which he would nevertheless be obliged to do. But to that the sarvadhikaryakar answered that his Master had ordered him, in case His Honor should again insist so strongly upon this, to simply admit outright that the old debt of Attinga had not been liquidated up to now, wherefore His Highness was resolved to pay the same, provided that His Honor would grant the King a term of 10 years within which His Highness would settle that amount with the delivery of pepper. It is true, said the sarvadhikaryakar, that his Master had once undertaken to demonstrate with proofs that that account was liquidated and thus His Highness was not obliged to pay a duit more of it, but now during the administration of His Honor, His Highness did not wish to occupy himself with pretexts because His Highness had heard that His Honor was so forthright, and had a loathing for dissimulation, and more other praises and compliments of which His Honor did not desire a record to be kept; and as a proof of His Highness's true and sincere intention he did not wish to keep this matter lingering any longer. The Lord Commander, having heard this, testified that it was very dear and agreeable to His Honor to hear this resolute decision from His Highness, but it being to be wished that the payment could take place within a shorter number of years. And since the aforementioned sarvadhikaryakar insisted strongly upon this, that the satisfaction could only take place within the term of 10 years because it would otherwise fall too heavily upon His Highness, His Honor promised him that His Honor would write about that point on behalf of His Highness to Their High Mightinesses at Batavia, and arrange that it was settled in that manner. It being further decided that His Honor would write a letter to the King of Trevancoor on this subject, and that His Highness in answer thereto would send a written assurance as proof that the old debt of Altinga would be settled in the manner aforementioned. Furthermore, the sarvadhikaryakar addressed His Honor about the trade in Jaffnapatnam tobacco, asserting that that trade should belong to His Highness alone, with the request that His Honor would issue orders that the tobacco brought here might be delivered only to His Highness. His Honor answered thereto that he could not do the King this pleasure, that trade is free, and that if His Highness wished to be sole master of the tobacco, His Highness could be so of himself whenever His Highness offered the highest price to the people; but that His Honor could not bring himself to compel the inhabitants to deliver tobacco to His Highness for a lower price than they could obtain from others. Finally, he spoke also about the King of Cochim and even about the Paliath Achan with reference to what had transpired and the declaration of the latter as a rebel; however, the Lord Commander answered thereto in a friendly but evasive manner, saying that such were His Honor's business, or properly matters of the Company; whereupon Coemara Poela then answered that His Highness had also only charged him to speak about that discursively and, as it suited, privately as a friend; however, the Lord Commander broke off that discourse in a friendly way and spoke of something else, wherewith he departed outside.
