Report Letters etc. from the Supercargoes at Canton in China, received from 1st January to the last of April 1771:— Respectful Report To His High Nobleness The High Noble and Right Honorable Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra On behalf of the state of the United Netherlands and the General East India Company Governor General together with The Noble Lords Councilors of the Indies by the undersigned First Supercargo and Chief, and Supercargoes over the direct Trade, upon the departure of the ships the Princes van Orange, Willem de Vijfde, the Bodt, and the Jonge Mellingman from this Empire to Europe. High Noble, Right Honorable and Far-Commanding Lord and Noble Lords Per the English Company's ship the Earl of Middlesex, we had the honor of dispatching to Your High Noblenesses our Missive dated 20 November, to which we most respectfully refer, enclosing a duplicate of the same. Canton in China, the 12th of December 1770. The Company's four vessels, as stated in our previous letter, all arrived here in good condition between the 15th and the 20th of July inclusive, and their respective ship's commanders duly handed to us Your High Noblenesses' most revered instructive missive dated 27 June, and furthermore all documents pertaining to this office, which we most respectfully proceed to answer. Regarding the Japanese copper, the merchants here seem quite indifferent, as there is absolutely no demand for it; it is to be presumed that, outside the Company, their own junks from Japan can bring in the quantities needed, and that, peace having now been made, the copper mines in the province of Yunnan, which had been idle for years on account of the war in that region, are now yielding a large quantity of copper. With respect to Your High Noblenesses' reflection regarding the Th: 138000: — noted in our report of last year which we had employed, it is, with respectful deference, noted in error, as we stated in said report that we had employment for such capital, thus not yet employed, and in the course of time, as shown by the cash account, we effectively employed or disbursed Th: 107826: — Regarding the general fund, both in cash and goods, which according to Your High Noblenesses' statement will amount to a capital of Th: 910322:3: 8:1: for a remaining fund for the quiet season, it remains, according to the current account, Th: 205323: 8:1:5: which is in so far in conformity, yet differs from the fund of Th: 253299: 8: 2: 4: stated in the past year, as that included Th: 25675: 4: 7:7: which we had to employ for the purchase of spelter and porcelain for the Indian headquarters, but now, due to a lower amount of the return cargoes by more than Th: 16080: — than the calculation of Your High Noblenesses, has been brought to a fund of Th: 193352:3:1:9: We have noted that Your High Noblenesses have seen fit, against the dispatched pepper and excess of tin, to light 125000: — Spanish dollars from the ships the Princes van Orange and Willem de Vijfde out of the specie dispatched from the Fatherland. It was pleasing to us to learn of the delivery of the 255658: lb: spelter and 12 cases of porcelain loaded by us in the junk Honka; the junk Wonchong, which due to contrary winds put into Cochin China and wintered there, resolved to abandon the voyage to Batavia and return here, but was wrecked on the return voyage, although it is reported to us that it transshipped its cargo destined for Batavia into the junk Eckthaeij, which junk, as we are told, departed from Cochin China for your parts, but was forced by heavy weather to put into a port not named, so that we hope the same will finally arrive at Your High Noblenesses' place. We cannot fail to express our gratitude to Your High Noblenesses for the favorable approval regarding our purchase of spelter dispatched per the Macanese ships S:t Louis and S:ta Catharina. Your High Noblenesses' recommendation regarding the dispatch or fulfillment of Your demands we shall observe in the future. Notwithstanding that Your High Noblenesses are pleased to advise that the short delivery of spelter, both in pieces and weight, by the ship the S:t Louis has been redressed at your parts and the shortfall deducted from the freight money, the shipowner demands restitution from us; although this is beyond our control, it nevertheless raises concern about entering into dispute with that person, all the more because he maintains that he delivered those pieces in conformity with the agreement and does not have to answer for the weight; we shall see how to arrange this with him when we arrive in Macao. Canton in China, 12 December 1770 on the cloves and 17 lb on the nutmegs of the officers of the ship den Tempel, we understand very well ought to have been sent to Your Noble Lordships, but was by mistake added to the Homeland Papers and dispatched; Your Noble Lordships receive a copy herewith. The two 53-pounder weights sent by Your Noble Lordships have been compared against ours, and will be sent back again with the ship Burgh. The 5 pieces of Nankeen linen, according to the extract from the notarial declaration executed in Amsterdam regarding shortages on several cases sent per the ship Ganzenhoeff, we have accounted for to the Master Gentlemen; and such quantity was refunded by the supplier. Having answered the paragraphs regarding the aforementioned instructive missive from Your Noble Lordships as far as required, we shall have the honor of submitting a very respectful report to Your Noble Lordships regarding the trade as carried out by us and everything relating thereto; serving beforehand for Your Noble Lordships' reflection that the ship Burgh has already been brought to such a state that it, as we surmise, will be able to sail on the 25th of this month; we have not failed in any respects relating thereto to provide all assistance according to our ability, both in procuring the necessary materials from the foreign nations as well as the Chinese, and in selling the goods which the commercial servants aboard it, the merchant Feyth and junior merchant Stoelak, thought fit to dispose of, and as we trust will make a proper report to Your Noble Lordships regarding this. We had great difficulty obtaining such a price, or an increase of 3 mace per picul compared to the previous year, for that mineral; however, we succeeded in this primarily because we, so to speak, encouraged the merchants and assured them that no tin would be brought by junks from outside, which we thought we could do on good grounds based on the report from Your Noble Lordships, which quantity, although considerably larger than in the previous year, we nevertheless, as mentioned, hoped could be sold for no lesser price, because we may reasonably assume that through the present good intelligence with the Palembang court, the illicit import of Banka will be prevented. Canton in China the 12th December 1770 certainly will be more cautious and will not be hasty to conclude with us, and it is to be expected that in the meantime they will provide themselves from the parcels brought around outside; so that when the importation by English ships that pass the Strait of Malacca and come from the Coast is as abundant as it has been this year, they will make no haste to buy the Honourable Company's tin. The 400,000 lb projected by Your Right Excellencies as ballast for the homeward-bound ships have remained divided in equal portions upon each. The pepper we have sold at R:o 12: 8: 4 the picul and delivered 489,818 lb, debiting the ship's officers on their account on account of underweight, namely Willem de Vijfde for 6,138 lb De Jonge Hellingman for 1,216 lb De Bodt for 2,828 lb. It has grieved us greatly that, on account of a later than ordinary arrival at Batavia, the Honourable Company's ships arrived here circa one month later than has been customary for some years, having to behold with open eyes that the European Portuguese ship Reine de Nantes, which was forced by missing its voyage to here the previous year to put in at Batavia and stayed there 7 months, arrived at Macao on the 6th of June with 1,000 piculs of pepper, which, as the supercargoes themselves assured us, they purchased there at R:o 21 the picul and sold at Macao at F: 20:— to our merchant Chetqua; just as they also sold other goods Canton in China the 12th December 1770 goods made known in the adjoining note with considerable profit; subsequently, fully 400 piculs of Malabar pepper were sold at F: 20: 5:— by a small ship from the Coast belonging to Macao, which price held firm until the arrival of the English Bencoolen ship Earl of Middlesex, which had missed its voyage the previous year, whereupon that article suddenly dropped to guilders 17:— without buyers. In the meantime, various Macao ships appeared, and finally the Honourable Company's ships, as well as 2 English Company ships from Bencoolen and Bombay with pepper, plus an English private ship from the Coast likewise having that grain inside; which caused such dismay among the Chinese merchants that at least 2 months passed wherein we heard no mention of pepper, until finally the English opened the market and sold their Malabar pepper at 13 and Bencoolen at F: 12:— the Spanish dollar at 72 candareens, which lead we followed and sold ours as said, so that the Spanish dollar calculated at 72 candareens comes out to 5 mace less per picul than the Malabar. As it appears, prices next year will be considerably lower, and we dare not flatter ourselves that it will fetch Tales 11:— the picul, both on account of the large stock and the supply next year. The lead we sold at F: 4:— the picul, which in proportion to the great quantity brought here is a high price, and likewise gives little hope that such a price can be made next year, since, so to speak, we obtained such a price as a favour on account of the Canton in China the 12th December 1770 smallness of quantity, and we are assured that other nations have not made more than Tales 3: 7 for their lead. The seed pearls consigned to us by Your Right Excellencies we disposed of with great difficulty at Tales 7 the catty, and delivered against cash payment, on which a shortfall in weight of 4 7/16 lb occurred; our merchants unanimously testified that the quality was very bad, never offered more than 5 Spanish dollars for it, and without the opportunity of a shopkeeper or peddler who dabbles in it and sells in small parcels, we had little prospect of obtaining such a price. Canton in China, 12 December 1770 If Your High Excellencies should have such yarn in stock, it will be pleasing to us, if Your High Excellencies see fit, to receive 50 to 100 piculs thereof the coming year. Presently we have again succeeded so fortunately with the loading of the Honorable Company's four ships, the Princes van Orange, Willem de Vijfde, De Bodt, and the Jonge Hellingman, that the same are ready to sail, by whose early dispatch there is again no objection, according to the order of the Gentlemen Masters, to call at the Cape of Good Hope. Their cargo, as Your High Excellencies will please see from the enclosed short invoices, is again substantial. This year, besides our vessels, 20 ships have again appeared here for trade, namely: 13 English, of which 2 direct, 7 via Madras, 1 via Bombay, 1 via Bencoolen and Bombay, and 2 via Bencoolen; 2 Swedish, of which one via Cadiz; 2 Danish; 2 French private ships; 1 English ditto from the Coast. Already 3 English Company ships have departed, namely the Earl of Middlesex, Lord Camden, and the Kent; likewise the private ship Verelst to the Coast. The incoming cargo of the above-mentioned ships, in so far as we may trust the linguist to have stated it exactly from the Hoppo book, we have the honor to send herewith to Your High Excellencies a note concerning each ship; likewise of the Macao ships and junks, 3 small vessels having also arrived at Macao from Manila. Canton in China the 8th of January 1771 to send incoming ships equipped with such arms as Your High Excellencies shall deem convenient. Just as Your High Excellencies receive per the said ship 151 packs of gunny sacks and 68 packs of Chinese linen, the same all intact and good in order to be employed again on the old footing in case Your High Excellencies see fit to ship some pepper to this place again. We reflect that the invoice is debited with f 469: 8: for 3113 gunny sacks sent for the pepper per the ships De Both and Willem de vijfde and thus no use was made of the 2790 empty gunny sacks sent from here per the junk Ekthaij Anno 1766. We take the liberty, under favorable interpretation, to bring this to Your High Excellencies' notice. Canton in China the 8th of January 1771 From Macao a ship belonging to Simon Vincent de Roza is destined for your parts, which is to depart at the end of this month. It appears that this year no junk will be dispatched from here to Batavia. The desertion among our people has been stronger this year than in several previous years, 27 men having absented themselves, both from the four ships that have already repatriated and from the ship Burg, which we could not idly allow to pass. We addressed the English, against whom we had the most suspicion, not without good reason. According to the enclosed copy, an extract from their council, their captains certify to be entirely innocent, just as Captain Berrouw and Smith, according to their letter to the English Council—of which a copy is enclosed here, as well as two letters written to them by the supercargoes on that subject—also excuse themselves, but also intimate as if their sailors, of whom according to their statement 18 men deserted, were being detained on the ships of the Honourable Company. Against this we have protested in writing, and at the same time, for further conviction of false accusations and as assistance, requested 10 men as stated for the ship Burg, according to the enclosed copy. Furthermore, enclosed herewith for Your Excellencies is a copy of three declarations, namely one from Captain Eewijk, one by the sailors of the ship Princess of Orange, and one on behalf of the English. Also requesting that it be treated as an oversight that our dispatched extract of the resolution of 21 October 1770 was not accompanied by its proper annexes; we thought that they were annexed thereto, which seems to have been forgotten. The remark which Your Right Honorables are pleased to present to us concerning our note of the preceding From Canton in China, 15 December 1775; preceding year against our assurance given to the merchants here at that time, with regard to the delivery of tin by Palembang junks, we shall dutifully observe and conduct ourselves and take heed accordingly in the future. That Your Right Honorables have noted with vexation and dismay from our report of the preceding year our remarks regarding the delivery of 2000 piculs of tin traded in the Strait of Bangka from the Company's cruiser by a Danish ship, and of 1000 piculs of pepper purchased at Batavia by the Portuguese ship Reine de Nantes, we attest that we feel no less sorrow when, by virtue of our commanded charge and duty, we find ourselves compelled to bring such smuggling to the knowledge of Your Right Honorables. We have not failed, in accordance with the written order of Your Right Honourables, to pay a compliment of thanks in your name to the President of the English Council here, for the assistance rendered by Captains Litton, Prince, and Lander to the Japan ship Burgh. We have been very fortunate this year in the matter of desertion of our crewmen, and thus had not the least trouble with the English, just as we have even less been in the position of needing to make any use of the papers sent to us concerning this matter. We shall, however, put the remarks which Your Right Honourables presented to us concerning this to our use, in From Canton in China the 15th of December 1775 order in future not to place so much trust in the declarations of ship officers, but to proceed more circumspectly with them. We shall take care that in the future, if we send any letters from foreign nations to Your Right Honourables, the same shall be translated as best as may be feasible. Pursuant to the order of Your Right Honourables, we have furthermore communicated by letter to the Senate of Macao regarding the prohibition that none of their ships, on pain of confiscation, might appear at any of the offices of Java's Northeast Coast, but that the passage to your place remained open to them freely and unhindered. Just as we have likewise not failed to make known to the Chinese merchants, as far as was possible for us, the resolution and statute of Your Right Honourables regarding the import and transport of Chinese tobacco, although this seems likely to have little influence here, as the voyage for the junks from here to From Canton in China the 15th of December 1775 to Java appears to be entirely languishing, as none will depart thither again this year, the junk Ecthaij also not having returned up to now. Regarding the shortage found in the Netherlands of 1 pack of Nankeen linen from the discharge of the ship Den Tempel for the Chamber of Delft, and 30 packs of the same from the ship Willem de Vijfde for the Chamber of Amsterdam, concerning which Your Right Honourables have sent us copies of the declaration, we have obtained the required settlement; however, we could not succeed in that point regarding the missing 5 pieces of furniture damasks, concerning which an excerpted report from the senior merchants of the Castle was sent to us, because we do not have sufficient information in that regard, not knowing by whom or when such a case of damasks was sent from here for the account of the Honourable Company, as what was noted in that regard in the said report is completely erroneous, the junk Swering, departing from here for Batavia in the beginning of the year 1765, having been wrecked on the island of Hainan a few days after putting to sea, so that no possibility From Canton in China the 15th of December 1775 exists that the aforementioned case of damasks could have been brought to Batavia by that junk. It goes without saying, therefore, that we are unable to procure any clarification in this matter, much less any compensation. That by Your Right Honours our humble request regarding the provisions and necessities for this factory has been favorably granted and approved obliges us hereby to express our gratitude, and we shall be pleased to see that the annual dispatch remains regulated according to that request. Likewise we also solicit that Your Right Honours continue in your useful arrangement to have all iron ballast and superfluous baggage and lumber lightened from the ships destined for this place, so that they may not thereby be hindered in their loading here. [illegible] Chinese New Year was revoked by the Pontocq of this city and province, and it was thereby hoped that some improvement in the course of general trade to the advantage of the Europeans would be experienced, it was nevertheless discovered in the outcome that the state of affairs underwent not the slightest alteration thereby, but that, as far as the main matter is concerned, everything continues in the same manner as before; As we have also concluded our principal trade once again solely with our three customary merchants and carried it into execution, proceeding to the detailed treatment of which we shall begin with Tin, of which mineral 300,000 lb was sent to us by Your Right Noblenesses with the four ships, destined for sale here. We already warned Your Right Noblenesses in our latest report of the less favorable prospect that we could form at such a distance due to the juncture of the times; for because so many months elapse between the two, one is in this vast empire no less than infallibly uncertain of its market; on the contrary, one is in a position to see the most significant overthrows of trade arise at an unexpected moment. For which reason we very humbly request Your Right Noblenesses, should such a difference between our statement and its outcome ever exist, not to attribute this to a lack of attention or neglect of sufficient information, but to events which in such an extensive territory can arise most unexpectedly through a thousand kinds of occurrences unknown to us. Regarding the item of tin, however, this has not presently turned out to our advantage. But upon the arrival of the ships we had as little reason to think favorably concerning the sale as when we dispatched our report to Your Right Noblenesses, especially because the supply far exceeded that of the previous year and considerable lots had already been brought in by some arrived English ships, and more was added daily by those arriving, so that a quantity of 10,000 picols has been delivered here by them, mostly traded at Tanganano and on other small islands around Malacca which are independent of the Company. So many and various parcels being distributed here and there for particular prices and on different conditions gave not the least encouragement to our hope of succeeding; on the contrary, we began to fear that we would not be able to obtain the price of the previous year. However, redoubled and repeated efforts, after an inconceivable difficulty, finally had the result that, contrary to our expectation, we fortunately succeeded in the sale of that mineral at the price of H: 11: 3:-, the same as the previous year. The outcome has also subsequently taught us that our fear of not being able to negotiate such a high price was well founded and rested upon genuine information, as we are fully convinced our merchants have not been able to recover their own money up to now, but the Chinese market rate still continues to circulate below our sale price. As regards our prospect concerning this item for the next season, we have already noted a moment ago that our views in this place during such an interval are exposed to the greatest uncertainty; thus we limit ourselves merely to guessing in the best possible manner and according to the most general information. It is certainly more than well known that the Empire of China consumes an important quantity of tin, since most of it is consumed by fire as a sacrifice to the gods, and an experience of several years has taught us that the parcels, however large, were consumed from time to time by shipments. Yet this does not alter the fact that the prices from one time to another have differed very much, and that if only a little more than the strictly required quantity is imported, this exerts very much influence upon the general market. However much we might now wish to be able to make a favorable report to Your Right Noblenesses regarding this item with some well-founded certainty, we nevertheless do not dare to flatter you lightly, as not the least appearance encourages us to do so. We shall, however, not undertake, on the other hand, to supplicate Your Right Noblenesses for any smaller shipment, but we expect Your Right Noblenesses will approve the same quantity that was sent to us this year, although our thoughts are at the same time that it is advisable to leave it at that for the present, without further augmentation; and we assure Your Right Noblenesses that there will never be any lack of our diligence or zeal to apply all possible care towards obtaining the highest prices, just as we trust that Your Right Noblenesses remain convinced that in all our transactions we keep the interest of the Dutch Company in view as our first and foremost aim. From Canton in China, the 15th of December 1741. Loan of a mate and three sailors for the service of the Macao vessel Sint Clara at the request of the Captain of the ship Sint Anthonij des Almas, Manuel Vincent Rosa, with orders to reclaim those crew members from the shipowner upon arrival with their vessel at Macao; we did not fail to execute that commission. Serving for Your Right Honourables' notification concerning the same that the vessel Sint Clara, having approached into sight of the city of Macao and lying anchored there due to calm and countercurrent, was overtaken by a violent storm which, causing its last cable to break, threw the vessel upon the rocks of the island Poethoij, and shattered it completely in a short time. A part of the crew consisting of Chinese and Malays perished, while the others, among whom the mate, besides the three sailors, happily saved themselves, and later arrived at Macao. We subsequently had some disputes with the owner of the vessel, the gentleman Raymondo De Mages Maxica, regarding the bad treatment shown to those crew members there at the beginning of their arrival, and were forced to give orders from here for their transport hither, the expenses of which, amounting to the sum of 26 guilders, 6 stivers, 4 pence, we have hitherto not been able to recover from the aforementioned Raymondo. We shall, however, try to devise the means to force him to make restitution of that sum. Your Right Honourables order us to let the aforementioned mate return to Batavia, as he does not belong to the crew of our ships. However, the intervening death of the first mate of the ship Het Loo, on which vessel no one was available to be nominated to replace a mate, has brought us under the necessity of having to decide to place the aforementioned mate Smith to act there, after he had sufficiently accounted for the wrecking of the Macao vessel Sint Clara, commanded by him, and it was found that this was not in the least caused by any neglect or negligence on his part, but by the bad condition of the vessel and the severity of the storm, and consequently to let his account on that vessel commence since 11th December 1741; we hope that Your Right Honourables will kindly deign to approve this arrangement of ours as being inevitable and necessary for the service of the Honourable Company. We have the honour, accompanying this, to offer to Your Right Honourables the short invoices of the cargoes of the four ships presently lying ready for their departure. The express order of our Lords and Masters dispatched to us this year concerning their loading, and tending to prevent an improper and excessive stowage of goods in some stipulated places, has brought about some reduction in their loading. We are, however, far from thinking that one should regard this as a disadvantage for the Company; on the contrary, we consider the foresight of our most respected Lords Principals as a natural consequence of that attentiveness which, even in the smallest circumstances, keeps in view the essential welfare of the General Company; while they, as prudent directors of the weighty interests tied to the preservation of these precious vessels, endeavour to provide against all threatening disasters and misfortunes. Besides our ships, the following have also appeared here for trade during this season, namely: 20 English Company ships, of which 3 direct from Europe 11 via Madras, among which 8 from the previous expedition 1 to Bombay 3 to Bencoolen 2 to Saint Helena 2 English private ships, namely: 1 from Bengal 1 from Bombay 1 Swedish Company ship 1 Danish ditto 2 French private ships from Europe and ditto 1 snow vessel that had likewise been dispatched by private individuals from La Rochelle to Mauritius, and sent hither from there to execute a commission for the military and other inhabitants. From Canton in China, the 15th of December 1774. we are informed that in all likelihood one will be laid down to undertake that voyage. We cannot refrain from sharing with Your Right Honourables the following report concerning a peculiar occurrence that took place here or rather at Macao this year. On the 19th of September last there arrived at the aforementioned place a strange single-masted vessel under a Hungarian flag; after it had come to anchor in the inner roads, it was learned upon inquiry that there were 57 persons aboard, among whom were four women. The principal persona was a man of no small extraction, named Maurice Auguste, Aladar Baron de Benyowsky, who, besides having held other dignities, had been a colonel in the service of the Confederated Polish Army. Having, in a battle against the Polish dissidents and their allies not far from Comminik, received seven severe wounds, he was taken prisoner by the Russians and sent by them into exile in Siberia. The said Baron having been condemned to the furthest borders of that country, From Canton in China, the 15th of December 1771; found exiled there as well the Prince of Soltyk, Bishop of Cracow, encouraged by whose advice the Baron resolved to venture an escape by one way or another, the most direct means for which was to undertake it by sea. To this end, he understood a sufficient amount of theory in mathematics, and happened to have with him the Voyages of Anson printed in the Slavonic tongue, in which there was a small chart encompassing that part of the ocean which he had to traverse. The difficulty was mostly to find a vessel for the projected voyage; yet, being assisted by the aforementioned Bishop with some thousand ducats, the Baron departed with a party of his countrymen for the East Coast of Siberia, and finally arrived in Kamchatka, where, in a harbour situated at 176 degrees of longitude and 59 degrees of North latitude, he found a vessel belonging to a Tartar family, which, lured by advantageous and rich offers, he persuaded to jointly undertake with him the voyage of escape, From Canton in China, the 15th of December, the year 1773; just as that entire family, men and women, then also embarked and their remaining garrison departed on the 9th of May of this year. The Baron steered around the North in order to find there a short passage to Europe, but was forced to turn back at 65 degrees of North latitude because of the ice with which the sea was covered. He nevertheless arrived there on the coast of America, from where he carried a native with him, and then crossed over to the Mariana Islands, where Anson had been. After having called there, he proceeded to Japan, where on the 17th of July he landed close to Nagasaki to take in water and provisions, and dispatched a letter to the Chief of the Dutch nation there, requesting assistance with necessities and a navigator to be able to pursue his voyage. To this letter, however, he seems to have received no reply, because the Japanese, not wishing to admit him, wanted to make him depart by force, whereby he then became engaged in battle with them and cut down several of them with sabres, which consequently caused a hasty retreat. From here the Baron crossed directly over to the Chinese coast, From Canton in China, the 15th of September 1773; and sought, though in vain, to land at Ningpo; yet, having been assisted at Amoy by the Mandarins with 2 Chinese pilots to bring them to Macao, he continued his voyage thither, and landed safely. The Senate immediately provided him with all maintenance and necessities, as well as his accompanying fellow travellers, assigning to them a dwelling for their lodging. The Baron subsequently claimed the protection of the French flag, and there is no doubt that there are political reasons which have obliged that nation to grant these fugitives passage to From Canton in China, the 15th of December 1773.
