appointment, which, to avoid a duplicate description, it was decided to insert here, as follows. Tuesday, the 29th of September, in the year 1772. In the morning at eight o'clock. Ordinary Judicial Meeting. All present. Except: The Honorable Gijsbertus Zeegelaar and Jacob van Tessel, due to indisposition. Initially, the Honorable President produced an authentic copy of a letter addressed by the Danish Governor and Council at Tranquebar, dated the 14th of the current month, to the Illustrious Coromandel Government, in response to the letters requisitorial dispatched to that administration on the 11th thereafter by the very same at the request of this Council pursuant to the appointment dated the 8th prior, regarding the case of the free merchant Arnold Hunteman, currently domiciled there, which his Honor stated had been sent to him by the aforementioned Coromandel Government in order to decide what is necessary concerning it; which, having subsequently been resumed, it was found that the aforesaid Danish administration thereby gave to understand that the said Hunteman, 527. the 1st of October 1772. having been addressed on the 1st of October 1772 to comply with the verdict rendered by this Council against him under date of the 26th of May last, had refused to conform therewith, and regarding the further requisitions, they simultaneously testified that this was all they were able to do in a matter of that nature to oblige the Government here, as they say that they would indeed be to blame if they did what this Council, as well as Hunteman's parties, did not even deem advisable to do at a time when his person and goods were under the Company's jurisdiction; namely, to arrest him either in person or property, and thus hoped that the Government would certainly excuse them for having done nothing else in this case, with an added assurance that in all other cases, wherein the protection of the Royal flag had nothing to suffer, it would serve them as a pleasure to be helpful to Justice; on which occasion Mr. Marthinus Koning, Merchant and Fiscal of this capital place, acting in this case on behalf of the Honorable Tammeris Cantervisscher, Senior Merchant and Chief Administrator at Houghly, and Secretary of this Council, at whose request the appointment of the 8th of the current month was issued and the letters requisitorial were dispatched, demonstrated to the meeting that the premise on which the Danish gentlemen attempted to evade the requisition made from here regarding Hunteman; namely, that when he, Hunteman, was still present here, no proceedings had been taken against him by arrest, according to their humble opinion was entirely unsustainable, because, he not having been present locally after the sentence was pronounced against him, but having the 1st of October 1772. retired before that date, and it not having been known at that time whether he would be deemed guilty of the facts charged against him, or rather be acquitted thereof, at the time when his person and goods were in this city, they also could not have proceeded to any arrest, since, if he were subsequently found innocent, the damages arising therefrom to him (which in such cases are always assessed very high) would have had to be compensated by the petitioner of the same; indeed, that they had wished to do so all the less because, he being established and trading here in town, his credit would thereby have suffered considerably and sometimes run completely aground, and also because they had not at all expected of him that, for so minor a matter, he would have abandoned a place that was extremely advantageous to him in his trade; and which, like the honesty that was assumed to reside in him, had then also been the motives that the aforementioned Mr. Cantervisscher, in his official capacity, when he, Hunteman, gave notice in this meeting on the 9th of July of the past year that he intended to depart from here, had been so generous as not to cause him the slightest hindrance therein, nor to demand any security, nor to proceed to anything further, as trusting that he, who was present here to announce his departure himself, also intended no evil intent or any fraud whatsoever thereby, much less would put it into effect afterward; but that, if he had been in this city after the rendering of the sentence and had been unwilling to comply therewith, or to prosecute his interposed appeal under provision of the money, they would then, by those same means which their Honors were requested to use in case of unwillingness, have

34 529. the 1st of October 1772. would have obliged to exercise thereto, and that they, petitioners, furthermore also presumed that the Danish ministry had not properly understood the intention regarding the deposit of the money and the prosecution of his lodged appeal, as had occurred regarding more judicial requisites with their Honors (of which the case of the testamentary executors of the former junior merchant Salomon Verschuijlenburg against Monsieur Labeaume served as a living example), since they merely say: "that Hunteman had not wished to conform to the sentence," and make no mention of his appeal, which notoriously had to be a misunderstanding, as the letter from the Government fully showed them that it was well known here that he would not submit to the sentence, since it was thereby most clearly evident that he had entered into a higher appeal, which would have had no place if he had wished to subject himself to it, so that the petitioners were of the opinion that the Danish Government was under the impression that one wished, without allowing Hunteman any higher appeal, to compel and force him willy-nilly to absolute satisfaction, whereas in the first place no more was demanded of him by the aforesaid requisitorial letter than that he should have to pursue the appeal, which he had caused to be entered as deeming himself aggrieved by the sentence according to his holograph letter of the 28th of May past, and consequently to pay the money provisionally under receipt, or to place it in escrow, as according to the Dutch laws (to which he is subject in this matter, and to which he also subjected himself in the proceedings, and which they had taken advantage of in his favor) is practicable in all cases against the officer, and his appeal was also granted to him on that condition by order of the 25th of June past, to the end that if he should happen to succumb in that case, it would be applied in satisfaction of the sentence, and in the contrary case be restored to him again; but if he was unwilling to do so, then in the second place, to proceed first to formal execution, so that it was left to his own will to prosecute his right further, or to renounce it, in which last-mentioned case he was absolutely obliged to satisfy as then submitting to the sentence, since someone to whom the path of a higher appeal stands open, and has already partly embarked upon it, relinquishing it again, thereby openly testifies and makes known that he acknowledges the judgment against him to be equitable, and submits himself to it; all of which the petitioners also insisted might respectfully be further made known and requested of the well-mentioned Coromandel Government, to be demonstrated to the Danish ministry by the very same if it please them in answer to the aforesaid letter, with a repeated request first to serve notice on Hunteman in the manner contained in their very own previous letters to prosecute his appeal under deposit of the money, and in case of unwillingness thereto and to formal satisfaction, to oblige him thereto by arrest, as this remains a firm law that the consequences of the arrest, if any should arise, run at the risk of the claimants, and their Honors are therefore not subject to the slightest accountability on that account. — And 531 the 1st of October 1772. And that it might furthermore also be made known thereby in fitting terms that one cannot fathom that by executing this requisite the protection of the Royal Danish flag should suffer the least thing, as thereby the equitable request of a ministry, whose sovereigns, namely their High Mightinesses, are friends and allies of their king, His Majesty of Denmark, is satisfied for the upholding of right and justice, and to a single private person, however, nothing more is said than that he will have to satisfy that which he himself acknowledges to be equitable by this relinquishment of his appeal, but that on the contrary, by refusing the same, occasion may be given for things that tarnish the equity which one is assured exists with their Honors, as has already been argued in detail in the outgoing letter of the 11th current. — Requesting furthermore, in case the Danish ministry nevertheless might refuse to undertake anything further regarding Hunteman, that immediately after the receipt of the news thereof, notices might be posted whereby each and everyone in this place, whosoever it may be, without distinction, who has anything in their possession, whether on account, debt, trade, or under whatever heading it may be, is ordered and enjoined to declare and deliver the same to the Judiciary here within the period of one month on pain of arbitrary correction regarding those who might be found to have concealed the same, and that for the reason that one with no

the 1st of October 1772. had reason to suppose that he still trades and has outstanding affairs in this place with one and another, since in the house where he lived and which is currently claimed to belong to Mr Holfort, a youth named Verwijk had been accommodated until the 5th of this month, and had kept servants belonging to him with himself, as well as lived there at his expense, as will further appear upon inquiry, but all of which he, as soon as he perceives that action is being taken against him with vigor, would liquidate and withdraw with the utmost haste, and thus the hope that still remained of recovering something from him in that manner, if not attended to with the utmost haste, would also disappear, which makes this request, although otherwise somewhat precipitate, very necessary, with a further request that letters rogatory might also be granted to Colombo, Tutucorijn, Jaffanapatnam and elsewhere on the island of Ceylon, where it is known that he has traded, in order to post similar placards there, and if he should at times appear there in person, to arrest him, and to give notice thereof to this place. The Council, confirming the propositions made in this matter by the fiscal and the secretary, grants the proposal requested by the same from the Right Honorable Reynier van Vlissingen, Governor and Director of this Coast of Coromandel and its dependencies, together with the Council of Policy, that the letter from the Danish ministry at Tranquebar may be answered in such manner as has been proposed and demonstrated by the same. But approves that the decision on the further requests; namely that 533. the 1st of October 1772. that placards may be posted in this place, whereby all and everyone, whosoever it may be, who has in his possession anything belonging to Hunteman, whether by way of account, debt, trade, or under whatever heading it might be, are ordered and enjoined to declare and surrender the same to the judiciary here within the period of one month, on pain of arbitrary correction against those who shall be found to have concealed the same; and furthermore to grant letters rogatory to the Courts of Justice at Colombo, Tutucorijn, Jaffanapatnam and elsewhere where it shall be necessary, to make a similar posting of placards there as well, and to arrest Hunteman if he should happen to appear there in person; be postponed for the time being, until the reply of the aforementioned Danish ministry to the aforementioned departing letter of the government here shall have been received, in order that, upon receipt of a not satisfactory reply, it may then immediately be decided thereupon as shall be found to be proper in good justice; was written below; Extracted from the Criminal Roll of this Castle; agrees; Nagapatnam the 30th of September 1772; was signed; I. By roll call The Merchant and Fiscal of this principal place, Marthinus Koning, having made a request to the Governor to be permitted to petition their High Excellencies, the Honorable High Indian Government, by request, for reimbursement of the travel expenses incurred by him overland from the station Daggernaijkpoeram to this place, on the grounds that this was not done arbitrarily by him, but that, owing to the non-appearance of the ship Zeekerlust at that station, notwithstanding he had waited there for that vessel for fully 17 days, he had indeed been compelled to do so in order to reach his assigned post, to which his indisposition, which had obliged him to go overland from Bimilipatnam to that factory, had also incited him all the more, in addition to several other reasons set forth at length by him in that petition, to which the account of those expenses is attached, amounting to pagodas 262. 3.¼., 535. the 15th of October 1772. it was approved and resolved, after the members had taken reading of those papers, to condescend therein, and consequently to present that petition respectfully to their High Excellencies in the humble letter of this government to be dispatched with the ship Vreedelust, and to transmit the request together with the specification of those expenses for that purpose. 15 October 1772: receipt of a European packet with duplicates orders issued for 3 packs of Palicol chintzes of Jag: and why were read, approved, and signed the separate and general missives prepared for Their High Excellencies, the Honorable High Indian Government at Batavia, to be dispatched by the ship Vreedelust, which vessel it was resolved to dispatch this very day. It was also understood to make note here of the receipt from Ceylon, along with the ministers' covering letter of 18 September last, of a packet of European papers brought to that island by the ship Gijnwensch and thence via Jaffanapatnam to this place, containing the venerated duplicate missives of the Honorable Highly Esteemed Lords Directors at the Assembly of the Seventeen, at the presiding chamber of Amsterdam, under dates of 18 October, 14 November, and 16 December of the past year directed to this Government, along with the accompanying appendices according to the Register, the originals of which, according to what was noted in the Resolution of 7 September past, have already been received here. 7 November 1772. to resolve what is necessary regarding the same, and initially with respect to the factory at Bimilipatnam, upon the letters of the chiefs dated 15 and 27 July, also 16 and 28 August, as well as 20 September last, it was agreed to approve the chiefs' conduct concerning the sloops that were there, and the provisions made to the same according to the memoranda sent over, with the declaration to be made that one did not doubt that the same must have been extremely necessary, principally of the anchor rope to the sloop Anthonia Dorothea, as otherwise one ought as little to proceed to that as to any repairs on such vessels, and further to order them in the future not to charge the boatman wages and the drinking water to and on behalf of the sloops in the new financial year over here anymore, but to write them off there at the factory itself to the account of the sloops, as well as to have counted into the treasury by the person responsible the sundry packaging goods charged by invoice over here for one bankaal and 200 lb of nails amounting to f 3. 17. 8, since the council does not wish to tolerate such contrived charges; it being meanwhile approved to authorize them to write off the expense account of the past month of July, except for the costs charged therein for discharging, carrying up, and storing the alum, amounting to pag: 4: 14: 7/8, which it was understood should be made good in the treasury by the chiefs, as they, by their arbitrary and unauthorized dispatch of the same, were as much the cause of that as of the underweight of 199 1/16 lb found upon redelivery according to the findings sent over, which was therefore also decided to have them pay into the treasury at purchase price, together with all further costs that might have arisen with that shipment, as the Honorable Company was not obliged to bear the burden of such self-willed actions. By the resolution of 5 May past, the disposition on the request previously submitted by the chiefs by letter of 13 March by the surety and adopted son of the deceased merchant at that factory, Daatcherij Erraij, named Daatcherij Coermana, to be appointed as merchant instead of the said Daatcherij Erraij, was postponed, and the same having since arrived here in person and having renewed that request here himself, it was now decided to admit him in that capacity under such restrictions as were proposed by the chiefs in the aforementioned letter and were further offered here by himself, namely that his two younger brothers, Daatcherij Sanasie and Daatcherij China Erraij, interpose themselves as sureties for him and bind themselves in writing alongside him, not only for the debts of the deceased, but also for the money that has already been advanced to him as surety on this year's collection, and to be considered henceforth as a permanent merchant, and thus to further order the chiefs, on that security, to let him attend to the trade in place of the deceased and to assign to him his share in the new demands. Furthermore, upon the nomination of the chief, the person of Frans Caspertz of Bimilipatnam was accepted into the Company's service as an ordinary seaman at f 7 per month, having also made an application for this himself via a submitted petition. Regarding Jaggernaijkpoeram, it was decided, in reply to the servants' letters dated 10 August, 15, 16, and 19 September, as well as 3 and 5 October past, also to approve their conduct concerning the discharging and loading of several sloops that had been there, but on the other hand to express the utmost displeasure of this Government over the late dispatch of the return ship Alkemade on the 3rd of the last-mentioned month, and that with only a small cargo of f 779199. 9, of which late departure, despite it not having pleased the chiefs to give any reason in their letter of advice of 7 November 1772,

351 545. the 7th November 1772. to observe greater vigilance the late dispatch of that vessel. to supply reasons, although in anno passato when they also did not do so, they were most severely reproached about it; the Government could attribute this to nothing else than their inexcusable sloth in the master's service, regarding the readying of the papers for that vessel, wherefore it was decided to recommend to them in the most serious manner, to conduct the Company's service with the work of their department with somewhat greater vigilance and less indifference, if they did not wish to see themselves compelled thereto by and under which threat unpleasant measures, which it was nevertheless resolved for this time not to apply further than to leave the late dispatch of that ship on the 3rd October aforesaid, instead of the date ultimately determined by Their High Excellencies of the 25th September prior, with the resulting consequences thereof, directly for their account and responsibility. the 7th of November 1772. to satisfy, and then falsely boast of the zeal and vigilance applied to that end, as the chiefs did in their letter of the 12th of September; and therefore it was resolved to hold before them in serious terms that the self-praise which they attempted to give themselves in that letter, this year, through their irresponsible and punishable actions in collecting bad cloths, had by no means been earned, but on the contrary they had deserved a sensible correction, principally with relation to the chintzes collected for Europe, mentioned at length in the resolution of the 15th of October last, and at the same time to recommend in the most emphatic manner to continue and advance the collection of sound cloths with all zeal and diligence; furthermore, to conclude the contracts for the new requisition for the year 1773 as soon as possible and to send them over, concerning which it was believed that, now that the smallpox epidemic there had ceased and the unreasonable behavior of the English chief at Maduapallem had also stopped, and moreover the laborers who had fled because of those two impediments had returned again, not the least obstacles remained, but it depended solely on the zeal and vigilance of the chiefs and merchants. Furthermore, one would continue to look forward with anticipation to the account settled with the merchants of the past trading year, in order to be able to discern from it to what extent the servants have fulfilled their so frequently made and repeated promises and assurances that the debts would be settled by the final day of August, since the Government, from the contents of their letter of the 12th of September last concerning this, could not imagine or expect much good, because therein, as if it were an omen of what was to follow, it was said that the reduced arrears this year would have presented a more favorable appearance if the aforesaid two events had not occurred, it being meanwhile resolved to refer the investigation regarding the share of the successive chiefs and seconds in the allocated gratification, which the servants say is impossible for them to trace, to the servants at the trade office here, and to impart the result thereof to them after the demonstration in that regard shall have been received. Concerning the forwarded account of the expenses incurred on the dwellings of the chief and the second to the excessive amount of f7959:8.—, or f2843:11:8 more than was stated and calculated for it; it was approved and resolved to express the utmost displeasure of this Government, since it appeared incomprehensible how the servants had dared to be so arrogant and audacious, not only to spend such a considerable sum beyond the estimate without the least authorization, but on top of that, in their frequently mentioned letter of the 12th of September, even to requisition more timber, and in such a manner the 7th of November 1772. as if the calculated amount had not nearly been spent yet, from which it appeared clearly evident that they did not look after the interest of the Honorable Company at all, or care about it, but rather aimed, contrary to oath and duty, to cause damage to the Honorable Company both through the collection of defective linens and through the reckless increase of expenses (of which this case was regarded as a conclusive proof); wherefore it was approved and resolved not to pass that account for write-off, but to order the servants to enter the same in the books under extraordinary repairs for the year 1771/2, and to carry it over again into the new books in such manner, and let it continue to run, until such time as this Government should have disposed of it finally, which it was resolved to defer for the present until the aforementioned work should have been completed, with which the servants would be ordered to make all haste herewith.

With regard to the transmitted response to the home and Indian requisitions of the past trading year, which upon resumption were found to be drawn up according to the order, it was deemed proper to express the satisfaction of this government to the chiefs, because the same, notwithstanding the difficulties raised by the merchants regarding the fulfillment of the coarse weaves unless they were permitted to deliver 3rd sort thereof for Europe, had been fulfilled with the exception of 17 packs, from which it shone through most evidently that all the objections which the merchants made now and then regarding the impossibility of procuring those assortments contained nothing of substance, but was purely and solely to be attributed to their impudent caprices, and that consequently, if they put self-interest aside a little and applied themselves with zeal, as befitted ambitious merchants, they could easily fulfill their engagement as they are bound and obliged to do; and therefore it was resolved to write to the chiefs to urge this constantly with earnestness, as well as to make a beginning with the same immediately regarding the new requisitions, and to urge them to a better observance of their duty. Hendrik and Johan de Neijs in Amsterdam—to their High Nobilities in the letter of this Government to be dispatched via Ceylon. The unexpected demand that arose for Japan bar copper, to such an extent even that the servants had almost nothing more on hand upon the dispatch of their letter of 20 October past, appeared very agreeable to the assembly, and 7 November 1772. and therefore it was decided, in the hope that the same would continue, to authorize them to requisition a quantity of that mineral from Palliacatta, if it could be spared from there without causing damage to the consumption, with the recommendation to promote the sale of spices and other trade goods also by all possible means, just as it appeared to the Government with particular satisfaction from the yield of the month of September that in that month a profit of f13045. 15. was made, as well as from the summary of the sold merchandise that the general profits gained thereon in the past book year amounted to a sum of f99804:18:—, which one hoped would still increase from time to time through the vigilance of the chiefs; but as the price which the servants communicated that the tutenag fetched at Madraspatnam, namely 18 1/2 star pagodas the bahar of 480 lb, was much too low to dispose of what was in stock thereof 505 7 November 1772. at their office for that price, it was resolved to instruct them to hold on to the same a little longer, and if possible, even if it were only in small lots, to try to dispose of it for the price fixed for it by the Honorable Company, and also to provide them with cash upon their requisition, either overland or by bill of exchange from Madraspatnam, under declaration however that the assembly could not refrain from expressing their surprise that, while they requested to have money sent to them by bill of exchange via Madraspatnam, they did not at the same time mention the agio between the Nagapatnam and star pagodas which must now be paid when drawing bills of exchange, as one would then have been able to regulate oneself accordingly. While the meeting, regarding the complaint of the ministers of the aforementioned government, contained in their letter of 4 August last, that the Prince of Tanjore, contrary to the order of Their High Excellencies contained in a letter to that ministry dated 30 April of last year, let his recognition elephants run over from one year to the next, and the damage that according to their assertions resulted therefrom to the disadvantage of the elephant trade at Jaffanapatnam (about which the Jaffanapatnam ministers also already made ample deliberation and observation in their letters of 1 and 23 June last), remarked that although Their Excellencies' sentiment in this regard was by no means the 7th of November 1772. 597. the 7th of November 1772. unfounded, since the said prince then had the finest animals picked out at a time when they were on hand, and one could therefore not but agree entirely with Their Excellencies in urging the punctual compliance with the well-mentioned order of Their High Excellencies in this regard, it was nevertheless no less firm and certain that the prince in that case would never allow such strict rules to be prescribed to him, as being contrary to his haughty nature, and that His Highness's arrears were also not always to be attributed solely to his arbitrary conduct, but sometimes also resulted from the fact that his emissaries could not obtain the due number of those animals of such a constitution that they pleased the prince or were presentable, and consequently returned with fewer than they were supposed to have, as had happened repeatedly, and most recently in the year 1770, when His Highness, being entitled to 10 pieces, continuation the emissaries had returned with no more than 7 of the same, just as this year they had again not been able to obtain the due number; for although the meeting did not wish to deny that this had to be attributed partly to the fastidiousness of the selectors, on the other hand it also came into consideration that not all animals were suitable for the prince, but that he needed to have beasts of some distinction, since otherwise one would not only run the risk that he would not accept them, or, having already been brought to court, would send them back, and one would then have to feed them here to the detriment of the Honorable Company, which would have to maintain them until an opportunity presented itself to dispose of them in one way or another, but also that he might take some offense on that account, feeling that he had been shown little respect thereby, and that he might make the Honorable Company pay for it in one way or another. the 7th of November 1772.

599. 7 November 1772. judging that it is best in this matter not to use any compliance, he would make them pay double, for which an opportunity was never lacking to him; so that the Council, after mature deliberation on everything that had any bearing on this matter, judged that in this respect it was much better to employ some compliance than to insist so strongly on that point, since these novelties (for which one was assured that such would be perceived as such by the Court, as it had never yet been insisted upon) would cause many disputes and discrepancies, which in the present situation of affairs of the Principality of Tansjour could only tend to the detriment of the Honorable Company's interests at this capital. Which—namely, applying some accommodation in this regard—was presupposed could easily occur without significant prejudice to the Honorable Company, partly because that point had never yet been urged so strongly, nor having intentionally put it into practice, the esteem of the Honorable Company was therefore in no respect infringed thereby; and partly because the elephants would nonetheless have to be delivered to His Highness sooner or later, and he, for the reasons alleged here before, could not be dismissed with inferior beasts. Although, however, in order to comply as much as possible with the orders of their Honorable Excellencies and the requisition of the Ceylon ministers, it was approved and resolved, on an appropriate occasion presenting itself, to endeavor to persuade His Highness in an amicable manner to the annual collection of the elephants standing in his favor, notwithstanding that one had to assume with good reason that such would not be easily obtained, since the deeply rooted custom (for which the letting stand of the elephants must be regarded) was considered among the native potentates as a fixed law, upon which they constantly insist, as both of this and of His Highness's intention to make no change in this regard, an example had presented itself only recently, since the emissaries returned from Jaffanapatnam had been expressly ordered by him to pick out and bring over no more than just 7 elephants, notwithstanding that he had fully 9 head to his credit. Yet to use force in this regard and to refuse His Highness—as the Ceylon ministers appear to desire in case of unwillingness thereto—the always customary letters of recommendation for his emissaries, being considered entirely inadvisable and contrary to the Honorable Company's interest, to the consequences of which the assembly did not wish to expose itself nor take them for its account, it was thus decided, without their Honorable Excellencies' special qualification, not to proceed thereto, but to make known all the foregoing to the Ceylon government in answer to their Honors' grievances, and to write that regarding the improprieties committed by the Prince's emissaries in demanding that three hunting beasts, two of which did not belong to the Honorable Company, should be delivered to them, they had already caused a complaint to be made to the Court, but also to remark alongside this that a mistake made in the placement thereof, next to the animals projected for trade, could sometimes also be feared as the cause thereof, since if the animals had been stabled separately, the emissaries would have had no occasion to claim them. The said Ceylon Government having requested from here, under an accompanying requisition with their letter of 12 September, 4000 lb of cloves, with the promise to fulfill the same as soon as possible, it was resolved to express the inability of this Government to assist their Honors therewith without their own lack and disruption of trade on this Coast, since upon examination of the remaining stock it was found that no more than 3000 lb of that spice were on hand here, of which it was impossible that any could be spared; and in contrast to request by repetition to fulfill the requisition of 9600 lb of coffee beans made from here at the first opportunity. to repeat request. And although the assembly would have wished that the two chests of gold brought from Europe to Tuticorin for this coast by the ship Woestduijn had not been detained there, but sent here, 7 November 1772. as the same was extremely needed in the present circumstances of the time, one had to put up with it, the same being a fait accompli, and therefore it was resolved to put this to those ministers in the friendliest manner, and likewise to request that these amounts be repaid as soon as possible from whatever would be obtained from Batavia, since the present concurrent circumstances could otherwise easily cause a shortage of money on this Coast. Regarding the elucidation requested by their Honors concerning the sum of f3698. 8. -. remaining under the executors of the estate of the Right Honorable, Valiant Mr. Extraordinary Councilor of the Dutch Indies, and former Governor and Director of that island, Lubbert Jan van Eck, at the request of this Government by letter of 20 September 1767, for his Honor's share in the arrears of the Porto Novo merchants, it was resolved to serve to the effect that the same not yet being liquidated, those funds could therefore not yet be released, but must remain under attachment until such time as those debts should be settled, regarding which there was nevertheless hope concerning some merchants that this would take place within a short time. Subsequently served the report of the Assayer Jacob van Tessel, according to which 6 bars of Gorontalo gold, received here in the past year from the lot per the ship the Bartha Petronella, Nos. 76, 77, 79, 80, 83, and 81, were found together to be 1 carat 4 1/2 grains higher in alloy than they were invoiced; but against which, on a bar of Pulo Chinco No. 20, also brought here with the aforesaid vessel, 9 1/2 grains too little in alloy was found; and since the same contained only a trifle, it was resolved to liquidate it just as such here.
