Date 1772 Date 1 September for that which his highness remained indebted to the Honorable Company on the last of August Anno 1769 as for received cash and ammunition goods levied with the tolls. Rupees 3867 1/48 or 4641 guilders 1 stuiver 8 penningen. For 2 years arrears of paddy and one year money right according to resolution of the 18 February 1769 charged to the account of his highness's revenues from tolls and rights in Anno 1766/69 - - 1775 1/18 Rupees 2130 guilders 8 stuivers 8 penningen, Rupees 5642 1/18, 6771 guilders 10 stuivers — penningen. 3 February for 4000 pounds of flat iron for slaves at 14 rupees per 100 pounds buyout - 560 Rupees, 672 guilders. Last of August on account of the 12 months half wages of the Canarese Narna at the beach watchman at 2 23/48 Rupees per month - - 28 3/48 Rupees, 34 guilders 11 stuivers. The contribution in Anno 1771 to the Diaconate poor as a gift - - 16 Rupees, 19 guilders 4 stuivers. For the arrears of paddy rights of the mortgaged lands at Vypin, namely Cruz Milagre of Anno 1768/69 to the amount of 253½ Company parras, since only 1481½ instead of 1735 parras were delivered, which according to resolution of the 18 February 1769 are now charged to his highness's account at 1/5 rupees or 9 stuivers 9 5/6 penningen the parra with - 108 1/14 Rupees, 1297 guilders 12 stuivers 8 penningen. The arrears or one year right of Anno 1769/70 of the said mortgaged lands, which according to the cited resolution were also charged to his highness's account in the manner aforesaid, consisting of 1735 Company parras paddy at as above per parra, Rupees 694 or 832 guilders 16 stuivers. 7747 pieces of Cochin fanams calculated at 20 pieces per rupee, 387 7/20 Rupees, 464 guilders 16 stuivers 8 penningen. Note: As a memorandum it is made known here that according to secret resolution of the 3 September 1762, 300,000 Cochin fanams were advanced to his highness on mortgage of lands and gardens at Cruz Milagre, and thus that prince is still separately indebted for - - 15000 Rupees. Further on account of war expenses which have amounted according to what was noted at the settlements at the meeting of the 19th of this month, and of which the itemized account is to be inserted in the following resolution. 14054 Rupees. Reading having been taken of a written declaration granted at the requisition of the Skipper Carel Philip Cassel commanding the Company's ship 't Veldhoen by the Porca Resident Abraham Toussain, the bookkeeper Hermanus Lemmet, the junior assistant Jan Sachem Radewand, and the second mate of the said vessel Jacob Schoebert, on the occasion that the said ship took in pepper at Porca, and from which it appears that a vessel having to go aboard with pepper was overturned by the heavy surf and thereby 49 bags, containing according to good calculation and proportion of the whole shipment 1769 pounds of pepper, were lost; it was thereupon taken into consideration how it is known that in this time in

Insertion of the declaration time of the year the swells and surf on that side strike somewhat more than at the beginning of the monsoon, that in the year 1770 a similar incident occurred with the ship Ruijteveld, whereby 1330 lb were lost and also written off, it has been agreed, subject to the honored approval of Their High Nobles, to write off the aforesaid quantity of 1769 lb of pepper at the General Ledger as a sea loss, and to insert the declaration into this resolution. We the undersigned, Abraham Toussain, Bookkeeper and Resident, Harmanus Lemmet, Ian Iacob Radewand as Commissioners at the shipment, and Iacob Schoebert, Second Mate, declare hereby, at the requisition of the skipper of the vessel 'T veldhoen lying at the roadstead, that on the third of this month, the swell on the beach running very high, in the morning first Monday the 30th of March 1772:— first the vessel with which the authorities had come ashore overturned in front of the beach, which however through the assistance of the natives still ended without accident or loss of life, furthermore that not far from the shore a large vessel with twenty-four bags of pepper overturned due to the swells or surf, and with great difficulty no more than five bags thereof were salvaged, and the vessel having foundered, thus nineteen bags were lost, which after proper calculation in proportion to the weight of the bags taken on average contained net seventeen hundred and sixty-nine pounds, all the above we jointly testify that to us, while we were busy with the weighing of that charcoal, both by the natives of the vessels themselves and the sailors on the beach was reported 484 319: Monday the 30th of March 1772:— resumption of the price list of necessities for the year 1771/2. was reported, whereupon immediately, in order to prevent further misfortunes, we halted the further shipment, and made every effort, if it were possible, to salvage the said 19 bags, or at least some of them, which however, owing to the gradually rising surf, was in vain, this we unanimously declare to be the pure truth, as far as is known to us, being willing to confirm it at all times under oath: Porca the 4th of March, in the year 1772: was signed: A:m Toussain, W:s Limmet, I:n I:n Radewant and I:s Schoebert. Jnstertie van de verklaaring tijd van 't Iaar de rollings en brandings aan die kant wat meer als in 't begin en A„o 1770 is een diergelyk gevelgberd van de mousson, slaan, dat anno 1770: een diergelijk geval met het schip Ruijteveld g'exteerd is, waar bij toen 1330. lb weggeraakt en ook afgeschreeven zijn, zoo is ter g'eerde approbatie van Haar Hoog Edelheedens verstaan, voorsz: besluijt voren: quantitiet alseen zee ver quantiteijt van 1769: lb peper, als een zee-verlies bij het Generaal te laten afschrijven, en de verklaring bij dit besluijt in te schrijven. Wij ondergeteekende Abraham Toussain, Boekhouder en Resident, Harmanus Lemmet, Ian Iacob Radewand als Gecommitteerdens bij den afscheep, en Iacob Schoebert, onderstuurman, verklaaren bij desen, ter Requisitie van den schipper des ter rheede leggende bodem T veldhoen, dat op den derden dezes de rolling op de strand zeer hoog lopende, 'Smorgens eerstelijk Maandag den 30: Maart 1772:— eerstelijk het vaartuijg waar meede de gezaghebbers aan land gekomen, voor de strand omgeslagen, dat egter door de assistentie der Inlanders noch sonder ongeluk of verlies van menschen afgelopen, wijders dat niet verre van den oever een groot vaartuijg met vier en twintig zakken Peeper, door de rollings of brandings omgeslagen, en met veel moeijte niet meer dan vijff zakken daar van geborgen, en 't vaartuijg on „tramponeerd dus negenthien zakken verhooren zijn, welke na goede calculatie in eevenredigheijd van 't gewigt der zakken door elkander genomen netto ingehouden hebben seventhien hondert neegen en sestig ponden, all het bo „venstaande betuijgen wij gezamentlijk dat ons /:terwijl wij met 't afweegen van die koal beesig waaren:/ so door de Jnlanders der vaartuijgen zelf, als de aan strand zijnde Mattroosen geraporteerd 484 319: Maandag den 30: Maart 1772:— resumptie van de pryscourant van be„ noodigtheeden voor Anno 177½. geraporteerd te zijn, waar op terstond om verdere onheilen voor te komen, met den verderen afscheep die nog opgehouden hebben, en alle vlijt aangewend, om was 't mogelijk, de gemelde 19. zakken, of ten minsten eenige daar van te bergen, dat egter wegens de langsamer hand hoger lopende brandings vrugteloos geweest, dit verklaaren wij eenpaarig de zuijvere waarheijd te zijn, voor soo verre als het ons bekend, bereijdwillig het ten allen tijden met Eede te bevestigen: Porca den 4: Maart A„o 1772: /was getekend/ A=m Toussain, W:s Limmet, I:n I:n Radewant en I:s Schoebert. Resolution to buy aforesaid quantities for the service of the Company. The Commander shows the poor condition of the gunpowder cellar under the bastion Utrecht. Monday the 30th of March 1772 One has indeed enough space for storing the powder in both the powder houses, but it has not been used, because when the powder lies in the same for any significant time, it becomes damp and even wet, so that when powder is stored in it for a single occasion, it must continuously be left open, as was recently evident when one had to repair the powder house under the point Holland, and thus had to store that powder entirely in that cellar for that time, because all our powder could and might not be placed alone in the other powder house under Utrecht. How, although one has enough space in both our powder houses, and how the powder lies there very airy and dry, how dangerous it nevertheless is in case of unexpected accidents, both during a siege and during severe thunderstorms, which latter one experiences here uncommonly severe at the turn of the monsoon, just as the weather only recently struck the town inn not far from the powder house under Utrecht, to have all our powder solely in powder houses that are bricked up high out of the ground, and whose roofs, covered with tiles or bricks, overlook far above the city ramparts. How he, the Commander, had therefore deemed it necessary to conduct a trial to see whether the aforesaid powder cellar could not be made suitable by a slight expedient, or properly by making air holes, in order to store powder therein continuously. How the carpenter Job Vijverberg has accepted on that basis, for 130 Ropias, to properly make two air holes in the inner wall, which is eight feet thick, each air hole provided from outside and inside with two windows, and in such a manner that the same have proper circulation of air, elbow-shaped to one another, and in the middle of the wall further separated by separate frames with bars, so that the same can be opened daily from outside and closed again in the evening; provided the Company provides the necessary copper and iron fittings for the windows. How the said cellar having been completed these days, examined by expressly appointed Commissioners, and by this slight expedient, according to the following Report, is now made good and usable; whereas it otherwise has been of no use until now, it was understood to keep this note thereof and to pay that sum of 130 Ropias for it to the said Job Vijverberg. Monday the 30th of March 1772. built by the present Resident himself, and found upon appraisal that it is worth 450 Rijxdaalders, whereby the undersigned furthermore judge that it is built very conveniently and spacious enough for such a place and such a residence. Indeed, that decent people passing by can even have lodgings in that house without this being troublesome to the Resident, provided the company is not too large, as it consists of a large front lean-to, a fairly general living area in the manner of a front hall, and four separate small rooms built of brick and mortar. In the hope that we will have satisfied Your Honourable Respectable highly esteemed order to satisfaction, we call ourselves with all respect and high regard, underneath stood, Honourable Respectable Ruling Lord Your Honour's Respectable humble and obedient servants, was signed J. From the first of which it appears that it would be large enough if, instead of being 60 long, 24 wide and 14 high according to the project, it were made 60 or 61 feet long, 18 feet wide and 12 ditto high, thus 6 feet narrower and 2 feet lower, and that the dwelling house of the Resident is worth 450 Rds and is habitable enough for decent people who pass by there, as having a large lean-to and a fairly general living area and four additional separate small rooms. How he has looked into having such a warehouse of 61 feet long, 18 feet wide and 12 high inside dimensions built by tender and to the lowest bidder, on condition that the builder benefits from the pieces lying there, namely 41166 keepok bricks, 4325 pieces of roof tiles, 7900 pieces of tiles, and 37 pieces of timbers, which previously cost the Company 736 ropias 30, and that the Company, according to calculation, provides the nails to the quantity of about 700 lb costing at purchase 80 guilders 7 - or 66 2/2 ropias, and the necessary iron fittings for five windows and one door, however with this further condition that the aforesaid timbers indeed remain for the use of the builder but may not be used for the warehouse, as being not teak and thus not truly durable, but angelike and NB mostly perished by time and the air. And finally, how the overseer of the artillery Johannes van Asbeek and the house carpenter Job Vijverberg have undertaken to build that entire warehouse on the aforesaid conditions, provided with a roof covering of roof tiles or tiles, for 1200 ropias. Whereupon the Commandeur asked the members whether they could agree with him to take over the dwelling of the Resident, instead of the appraised price of 450 Rds, for 450 Ropias, for which the said Medeler had resolved to just give it up, since he could have no use of it now anyway, and further to have the warehouse built on the aforesaid conditions for the offered price of 1200 - Ropias, provided that the Resident Breekpot is given the preference to have it constructed himself for that offered sum and on the aforesaid conditions. And it is consequently resolved to have the aforesaid warehouse at Paponetty built on the said conditions for 1200 ropias, but not to make the payment before it shall have been examined by commissioners and shown by written report that it has been made properly solid and strong, and further to take over the brick dwelling of the bookkeeper Medeler for 450 ropias. He provides reasons why such a request might be granted to him, and why he may be permitted to depart with suspension of salary on the ship 'T Huijs Te Boede, currently lying in the roadstead here, via Ceylon to the headquarters, as he is unable to settle here and cannot bear the Cochin climate, but continually ails and is rarely healthy. And since it is known to the council that His Honour was already to have departed last year with the late Noble Lord Senff, and is continually sick and indisposed here, it has been approved and agreed, in hopes of Their Right Noblenesses' much-honoured approval, to grant his request and to accord him transport to the headquarters with suspension of salary on the aforementioned vessel.
