For the repair to the Ahmedabad lodge is brought up ro 136 1/8 yet agreed to according to D at 130 Approval of 2 specifications, the one on account of the repair of the Gentlemen's Stairs. Likewise having been submitted a specification from the Lodge Keeper at Ahmedabad of the relaying of the tiles and repairs done to the said building amounting to Ropias 136 3/8, it was resolved to grant the said Lodge Keeper for the aforementioned expenditure a sum of Ropias 103, as being that for which he was granted authorization by resolution of the 13th of June, and to incorporate the said specification into this. And since this is an extraordinary occurrence that certainly cannot be included under the usual yearly wear and tear, which the Warehouse Master in Surat is obliged to repair according to the regulation regarding provisions for servants for an annually fixed tantum, he hopes that your Honorable Worships will for these reasons please credit him with the aforementioned small amount; and to that end, he has the honor of submitting herewith an itemized account of the expenses incurred, humbly requesting that the same may be reimbursed to him from the treasury. To remit Rs. 147 to Ahmedabad per draft A soldier appointed as provost The military Lieutenant Witt who arrived here that an error was made in his pay account, he having been credited fourteen months too little therein, of which he, the undersigned, while still in Batavia, gave notice at the pay office, where the same was only redressed by an unsigned note on the account that came over with the books, as shown by its copy annexed hereto. Therefore, he, the petitioner, most humbly takes the liberty to request Your Right Honorable to give the pay bookkeeper the necessary authorization to rectify the said petitioner's account. For which favor he shall ever remain grateful. Beneath was written: Which doing, etc. Finally, it having been approved to remit to the lodge keeper at Ahmedabad per bill of exchange, according to annual custom, a sum of 147 rupees to cover the expenses and monthly wages and so forth of the Company servants present there in the lodge during the commenced financial year 1772/1773. And whereas the skipper ten Sonderen aforesaid declared that due to a lack of heavy timber no new rudder could be made there, but that he would still try to repair the old one in order to proceed with the voyage to the Cape after the turn of the monsoon in the coming month of October, he, the undersigned, had decided that it was better to proceed as soon as possible back to one of the Company's offices, rather than repeatedly undergo the misfortune of remaining there for months or longer.

Thus, Gentlemen, we immediately gave notice of this public violence committed, through two commissioners, members of our Assembly, to Mr. Price, in order to prevent such acts of violence from continuing while we were occupied in preparing this letter to Your Honour, while we simultaneously had His Honour asked whether and in what capacity he had lent his hand to this proceeding. In consequence of which we have deemed ourselves obliged, for the maintenance of the ancient privileges, liberties, and customs of our Company in this place, to dispatch this to Your Honour, and therein to complain in the most earnest manner about the public violence committed on the Company's wharf by the Banyan merchant Deanaet, who is under your protection, disturbing the public peace and the whole of trade, and thereby to request of Your Honour a public satisfaction consisting in the imposition of such penalties and indemnifications as shall be found adequate to atone for the insult and violence done to the Dutch Company. We are so far convinced of Your Honour's discernment that we consider it entirely unnecessary to make a long exposition here of the detrimental consequences that are to be expected when a common Banyan dares to openly obstruct the whole trade, with all that pertains thereto, of a privileged Company which is established in this place with pre-eminent prerogatives and privileges, so solemnly guaranteed by Your Honour yourselves, and to that end, and in order to give his violence some authority, does not shrink from using the names of the Nabob and of Your Honour's Chief himself, yes, even openly making a mockery of the name of the Great Mogul; whereas he could not demonstrate having any authorization or mandate from any of these, as Mr. Price declared to our aforementioned commissioners that he knew nothing of it, nor had given any orders to that effect. Only 284 The 25th September Anno 1772 Only we will state that the violence alleged herebefore was indeed committed as described, as we are in a position to demonstrate, and that it would become impossible for the Noble Dutch Company to carry on its trade, to which it is entitled according to its firmans, or to trust its goods in a place where it remained exposed to such attacks. And we consequently await with all certainty that Your Honour will not hesitate for a moment to discipline the aforementioned merchant Deanaat, who is under your protection, in Your Honour's Council for this improper and violent conduct of his, and to compel him to provide such a public satisfaction as is capable of atoning for the violence and injustice done to the Noble Dutch Company. But whereas Your Honour's Chief, Mr. Price, on the 30th August, through two commissioners in your Assembly, made known to the first undersigned that the aforementioned Deanaat had applied to His Honour with complaints regarding the non-fulfillment of a certain contract entered into between him and the two first undersigned concerning the sale of 2000 candies of sugar, spices, and other Company trade goods, and that with the stipulation that as long as that sugar was not collected, no goods would be weighed out to the other merchants; that he, Deanaat, had deposited the amount thereof entirely with our money changer, the said Mr. Price furthermore insisting that in case the aforementioned contract indeed existed, the goods should be weighed out to the repeatedly mentioned Deanaat accordingly; and the first undersigned thereupon undertook to embrace this opportunity to elucidate to Your Honour to what extent the insinuations made by this Banyan were based in truth or not, we can therefore inform Your Honour, Gentlemen, for the sake of completeness, that the aforementioned representation in its entirety and in all its parts is a pure and fabricated lie, which renders the informer punishable to the utmost. For on the 21st April of this year, in the contract by which he purchased various merchandise from the two first undersigned in the name of the Dutch Company, he solemnly bound himself to pay the purchase money of these trade goods into the Company's Main Treasury, namely 50,000 rupees on the 21st May following, and the entire remainder at the end of June thereafter, for the performance of which contract he bound his person and property and subjected himself to the Dutch jurisdiction; and he has in no respect yet fulfilled this contract, still owing a considerable sum. And had he fulfilled it, the remaining goods would not have been refused him for a single moment. Subsequently, the Honorable Head Administrator having submitted a finding drawn up by His Honor on such lots of merchandise as from those brought here in Anno 1769/70, 1770/71, and 1771/72, were weighed out to the merchant in the expired book-year and are now entirely cleared, together with and alongside an annexed Memorandum from the warehouse master showing the remainders still left under the ultimate of August last, it was deemed fit to insert the said writing and enclosures here; Furthermore, to let the warehouse master reimburse at prime cost, and pay into the treasury, the amount of 216½ lb of Japanese or Satsuma Camphor, which fell short on that brought in in Anno 1771, after deduction of the authorized write-off; and against that, to have credited to him likewise at prime cost in the treasury the amount of 451 lb of powdered sugar, as more has been accounted for on the import of the aforesaid year; and finally, to write off the 19 lb 8 oz of dust and crowns of 288 The 15th of October Anno 1772. to send to Batavia. of cloves, as well as mite-eaten nutmegs, and transfer them to spoiled spices, and to send the remainder thereof still found here to the capital by the first opportunity. Concerning allowing the Buginese soldiers who arrived with the ships to return with the same, it was decided to comply with this, as well as with the order to send over the specifications of the repairs, as also of the gifts and travel expenses of the returned smalschip the Mosselschulp, as the latter was submitted at the session of the 13th June last and recorded in the resolution of that day; and respectfully to submit to the said Right Honourable Gentlemen, upon their further given order to send this vessel with one of the ships to the capital if it is unnecessary here, that the same cannot be spared here, being very necessary both for the protection of the other vessels during unloading and loading, as well as for the collection of the return goods for the Homeland and the Indies from Brootchia, Bouwnager, Iamboeser, etc., against the Coolie pirates who continually render these surroundings unsafe; and this all the more so since, of the two decked horijs which, together with two smalschepen, were planned for this Directorship by Their Right Honourable Lordships' secret resolution of the 2nd May 1764, one now has in hand no more than the single Lastdraeger 303 The 30th October Anno 1772.
