322 The 30th of October 1772 belonging, and further to decide thereupon as follows hereafter, and thus that the Extract of the General Resolution of 18 July 1731, containing an order to have thoroughly investigated and reported, from the financial year 1761/2 until 1771 and subsequently annually, whether all the estates of the Company's deceased servants administered and sold by the respective curators ad lites have been properly inventoried, in order to dispose, upon finding any omissions, in accordance with the orders drafted on that matter, shall serve for observance, and to appoint to that commission the Fiscal van der Sleijden, and the Junior Merchant titular Zimmerman, handing over an extract of this document. This gross, overlooked clerical error here, having already been noted with a detailed remark on page 133 when recording the outgoing invoice, and the journal having been adjusted with ƒ 2000 above the sum of the invoice on pages 128 to 133, and Their High Noble Excellencies having favorably noted in the margin of the findings received on the trade books of this Directorate for the year 1768/1769 that the account of the Visitor General has been debited there again for that small amount, that matter has thus already been concluded. Pursuant to the Order with which your Honors, by your secret resolution of the 19 November 1770, were pleased to charge me, namely, that the tolls on imported goods, instead of being handled by the Brokers as was previously customary for about twenty years, should henceforth be issued by the Warehouse Master to those entitled thereto according to our Firmans, etc., I have since that time until now endeavored with all due zeal and attentiveness to acquit myself of this service in the best possible manner, notwithstanding the fact that I have encountered the most grievous vexations therein, both from the brokers and others; indeed even to such an extent that in the Toll Account of the past financial year I have suffered a considerable loss of over 1700 Rupees, caused by the goods having to be converted into money, if I wished to become able gradually to recover something of the Nabab's debt up to Rupees 11900, of which, as shown by what was recorded at the session of the 15 October last, Rupees 5000 have already been counted into the Treasury by me, being valued too high; just as I have had the honor to demonstrate this in the clearest terms to the Honorable Lord Commander, without it having been possible for his Honor, notwithstanding his Honor's assistance rendered in that regard, to procure me reimbursement, because the avaricious Regents can seldom in such matters be persuaded to sentiments of equity. By having the factors complain in writing which they advance, as these ought never to violate the law of neutrality; and that even if one were willing to overlook this escapade, the searching of the Company's lodge and the occupying of the same by armed men is nevertheless of such a nature that it cannot take place without the orders of the commanding officers, nor can it be palliated by any pretext, since that of occupying it in order to protect it from violence—which could be inflicted upon it by no one else than by themselves—is too far-fetched not to detect the snake in the grass here. Thus it was approved and understood to instruct the Broach servants by missive as soon as possible to lodge the strongest complaint in writing with the commanders of the aforesaid English army regarding their aforementioned conduct, whereby the laws of neutrality have been violated and they have broken their word; and at the same time to demand that the said militia, if they should still be present in the lodge, be immediately removed from there, and that the Company remain protected from all nuisance and violence, as well as maintained in its ancient privileges and prerogatives, with a further demand for proper satisfaction for the violence done to the Company's territory, as well as to its servants and subordinates. The said servants shall furthermore be instructed, in case the English commanders, without paying any regard to this representation, should see fit to let their troops remain by force in the lodge and keep it occupied, to formally protest against it in due form and subsequently report to this assembly as soon as possible.
